Saon na lang, I have not been to this blog for the longest time, just like Billy Joel and just last week I saw Pabs Calo as I was going home to Tibasak which everyone knows is in Cagayan de Oro and I seemed to espy Lew Yap and probably Jimmy Marfori but I could not be sure. It might have been on a Friday or a Saturday because everyone was out in Divisoria buying and selling stuff on the Night Market, aka Night Cafe.

I have been working on a Prout site and it seems to stabilize a little bit but that could change very quickly if the owner changes her mind. Too much perfection can be tedious and dreary when you are just trying to make a living on the net and the other people are just trying to get perfection in a world which is skewed and unbalanced.

Jai has a new post and I think it is pretty good. Some stuff as well: rock / pop / folk video sitess that might interest the uniterested passer by. I posted a video My Immortal on another site and it might be good to check it out.

I have been in Cagayan de Oro City for over five months now and I hardly see any of the guys of '66 with the exception of Jesse Barlisan who is always tending his billards business and store. I saw Lew Yap once, driving an Isuzu pickup and he is the same old Lew Yap except looking younger.

These past few months have seen me go to Maasin farm everyday to tend to things. There are a number of cows there and a couple of bulls to keep the cows happy. There are also a number of calves which seem to keep together that I am reminded of kindergarten.

I do not mean to pat my own back. I do think this is a good site, at least Google thinks so, giving it a pr1. That may not sound like much but there is a gap of immense proportions between pr1 and pr0 and of all the websites I have made, this is one of those few that got a pr. So what? Well, it makes me feel good to see it rank a little bit above the others that I have made and I think that is good enough.

I should get more pictures in these pages, if I could get one. Maybe I should make another site which could do more than just have me doing everything to make the impression of activity. What am I saying here? I am just glad for the page rank and I do not know how it got there, only Google knows.

Is there something planned for December?

I should have been in Cagayan de Oro by now but things have not progressed as quickly as I had expected and I am still plodding away at my computer as always. There are always hitches and glitches but such is the story of my life. However, I never get stuck for very long because I never accept being bogged down by this little thing called life, for very long at least. Cagayan de Oro City is fine and will surely wait for me to be there. I think that it will be soon. I had a really big roadblock which I just recently unblocked. Still, when I do get there, what will be in store for me in Cagayan de Oro City? Maybe nothing, as usual.

There was talk of the High School Chapter Homecoming in December, I wonder what the exact date is. Somebody knows for sure but who's telling? I have a few things lined up and they are as always, new things. I now realize that if something needs to be done right, you have to do it yourself and this is just what I have done, done it myself. I guess a lesson learned late in life is still lesson learned. I just cannot get over the fact that this is the fact of life as far as my life is concerned.

Is XUHS 1966 All Tired Out?

A certain observation has been made not just a few times when I was in Cagayan de Oro that people do not go to meetings anymore. The sentiment seems to be that nothing ever happens except drinking and talking. Of course, everyone enjoys the company but nothing significant seems to be happening. A few attempts were made to get a project going but nothing has come of any of it. Is the class all tuckered out? Are we facing the sunset? I would be afraid to answer that. I wonder what will come out of the December Homecoming scheduled by the High School Chapter of the XU-AAA? I would like to be there when it happens. Will XUHS 1966 be meeting? Or, are we just be going our own way? Quo Vadis XUHS 1966?

I have been fortunate enough to have been to Cagayan de Oro City a few times these past two months and I got to attend the XU-AAA Alumni Homecoming. Do I understand it correctly that the High School Chapter is holding another Homecoming in December? What is going on? What is happening?

The XUHS Class of 1966 did attend the August Homecoming as represented by Romy Gabriel, Jessie Barlisan, Roy Baltazar, Farley Sheng, Pabs Calo, Jimmy Marfori, Ching de la Serna and Adelo Bajao. As usual, Adelo has his shitload of anal jokes which frankly I hope he grows out of for reasons of taste.The night before, Mario Reyes came to Jessie's house where we had lots of laughs.

I am now in Cagayan de Oro City, trying to drum up support for a brand-new website now online from my servers at my domicile. I have envisioned this happening two years ago when I tried my hand at the art and science of web-mastering, if ever there was one and at long last I was able to make that vision come true. When I thought of this website, I thought one name was perfect although Romy Gabriel registered his objection that the name should be something catchy like Yahoo! or Google. Well, to each his own and I had a special affection for the name chingsworld.com. As luck would have it, I lost that name to some unknown entities who beat me to the punch and registered that name which I do ardently desired.

I had to settle for the next best thing which is chings-world.com. Well, good for me and unhapily for Romy, I will not budge and pick another name. He may not approve of it but but I would gladly make him a RomyGuapo.com website if he so desires just to appease his ruffled sensibilities. That might not make sense for some people (i.e ..guapo.com) but I am sure the XUHS Class of 1966 would applaud wholeheartedly for I have not heard of a member of the class who was not guapo.

VRE And All That Jazz

A while back I talked about VRE - Virtual Real Estate. This is an interesting concept, one which I find stimulating and refreshing considering that I spend most of my time on the Internet. One cannot help but discover the many ways that the Internet has been used by different people because they broadcast whatever it is that they are doing and oftentimes they charge you money for learning what it is that they do (this is usually accompanied by promises of fantastic profits). Looking over and sifting through the many paradigms and configurations that these ideas come in, I do find some kind of plausibility to the idea of Virtual Real Estate.

Many people believe that Yahoo is the only game in town and Google is a mystery. Yahoo is obvious. You can have anything you want from Yahoo i.e. email, news, shopping, etc. Google on the other hand, probably tries very hard not to duplicate Yahoo so what you get is a simple search bar where you can input your query string. Many have asked me, "How does Google make money?" Well, it appears that Google is making lots of money and is also throwing some of it around. Last year Google paid out a staggering $8 billion to its publishers of Google ads. Surely Google is awash in cash considering it paid a huge amount to purchase Youtube, the popular video-hosting site.

Here is my own version of VRE. There are tremendous resources available on the net and I am just using these in a massive way. This VRE is all about cars, trucks, motorcycles, scooters and what-have-you. I have barely scratched the surface. Enjoy!!!!

Plans for December

Arriving in Cagayan de Oro City from Dumaguete on a Friday afternoon, I quickly found found myself in a bit of a pickle upon reaching my usual El Cheapo hotel which was boarded up and awaiting renovation. Gathering my wits about me I quickly lugged my bag to Cinco Optical where Rey Cinco graciously allowed me to stow my burden in the back room. Walking about the general vicinity of downtown CDO I finally found suitable (translate cheap) lodgings at Yacapin St. That taken out of the way, I immediately called Romy who was cooling his heels at the VIP Hotel lobby. We then proceeded to an Internet Cafe where I showed him my Virtual Real Estate Empire which I had hoped would be a good way to generate passive income for the XUHS 1966 Class's Projects (should the class decide to adopt it).

We then proceeded to Farley's beachfront house at Cugman where we found him hard at work grilling tenderloin tips. Luis soon came as did Pastor who brought a bottle of whiskey. A little later, Pabs, Jimmy and Lew came and rounded up the group. The discussion was all about the latest (gossip) news about the other members of the class as well as projects that needed to be discussed. Big on the agenda was Mario's proposal to hold a golf tournament. Mario not being there, was ably represented by Lew who succinctly relayed Mario's plan of generating funds for a professiorial chair instead of the usual scholarships; the idea being that a good professor would do more good helping many students while a scholarship would only benefit one or two depending on the amount of money raised. That seemed to be a valid point and nobody really raised an objection to the general plan. Later, Lew's proposal to let Mario have a free hand in managing the project was met with muffled assents.

An allusion to a Souvenir Program to be published to comemmorate the Class's 40th anniversary was met with approval with Romy being nominated by Lew as the lead man in the project.

A cell phone camera was produced and some pictures were taken. Unfortunately, the pictures are still in Romy's camera and hopefully, it will get emailled to me for publication.

I would just like to talk a little bit about what has been happening quietly in the background while Humanity goes about its business of day-to-day living. Unbeknownst to all, I have gathered tools, materials and resources to create passive income through the Internet. I asked Romy Gabriel to bring to the attention of Class members an offer to take part in the Virtual Real Estate which I am slowly building. Land is limited in the offline world but online, the territory is vast, and endless possibilities prance about, waiting to be taken. Announcing the XU-AAA Website

XUHS 1966 has the honor of being the first to announce the presence of the XU AAA (Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan Alumni Association) precursor website. This dubious distinction owes to the fact that this website and that of XU AAA has the same webmaster. Well, as they say "walay pabor pabor". The Original aim of the XU-AAA website was to be simple and allow for social networking which is the latest thing in the Internet today. However, due to the need for a members directory, this simple concept became a wonderful idea of a database-driven website. While this idea is not at all new or inordinately exotic, it does entail a little bit of complication and computing wizardry.

As explained in the XU AAA post, there were a number of mishaps which has only served to make this webmaster even more eager to make a truly wonderful site. Abangan ang "new and improved" website of the XU- AAA. You can access the precursor site here.

Recalling the Silver Jubilee

January, 1991 was something to remember. Lew Yap gave me a call informing me that things were moving nicely towards our Silver Jubilee in December of that year. I thought, "good, we have a few months to prepare". Well, actually almost a year, which was really good because then we would not have to cram and stuff, a talent I am well acquainted with. He let it slip that we had to get cracking a little bit because the LCHS 1966 Silver Anniversary was in February and that the LC girls were inviting us as special guests which gave us less than three weeks to prepare something. He also told me that I was elected Programs Chairman in absentia so it was my job to get us on that Lourdes College Auditorium stage and do something snappy and not embarrass Xavier University and the Jesuits who we were representing. No problem, I said.

I told Lew that if you're asking me to come up with something to be done on stage then there is only one thing I will suggest: we will sing some songs. I will have middle-aged men on stage singing their lungs out. That was my plan and he readily agreed. I did not tell him that I had other things in mind. Firing up my trusty Wordstar machine, I dashed off a medley of eight songs that I was sure was going to bring the house down, if not for the singing then at least for the memories. Printing up several copies, I headed off to Dr. Arthur Palacio's dental clinic and gave him my plan which was simply to "delegate" the job to him, essentially freeing me to do other stuff which I wanted to do that night. Arthur "Archie" Palacio, good friend that he always is, agreed to cover for me while I went off to Jasaan with a metal detector to look for some of Yamashita's gold.

Apparently, nothing much came out with the meeting/practice that night as did my treasure-hunting activity. It was not really so difficult to imagine; a bunch of rowdy high school boys very often turn out to be rowdy middle-aged boys if brought together in the same room with some beer and a guitar. Lew who btw was the Class President at that time called me again to give me the news and said that, "lahi na gyud bay kung ikaw ang magdala". Well, he's a smooth talker and I could not really say no to him so, I put on hold my dreams unearthing fabulous treasures until after the presentation at the LCHS 1966 2th Anniversary.

The next scheduled practice was on a Tuesday night at Raymond Wilson's residence. Beer and a lot of reminiscing was the order of the evening while we waited for the others to come. This was not a good way to start and once again, there was a lot of good time but not much practice that night. That piece of knowledge under my belt, I "decreed" that beer would be served only after each practice as a way of celebrating a job well done, hopefully. The next practice was at Lew's office at the Republic Planters Bank and we did not really make much progress even without the beers owing to the Class66 trademark of being rowdy and free-spirited. I was forced once again to take draconian measures which translated to limiting the number of participants to eight instead of the free-for-all that was expected. This had the sobering effect that I desired and being on the team suddenly meant something special and desirable so they buckled up and the practice went without a hitch after all, singing was something that we liked to do.

The singing having been dealt with to my satisfaction, I turned my attention next to choreography. Bing Elloso, Vencing's wife was an excellent dancer and enthusiastically took up the role of choreographer. I told Bing to just teach us a few simple steps, no break-dancing and no pirouettes. A few more practice sessions had me convinced that we were able to achieve something more than just re-learn old songs. We genuinely became a team, a unit and even those of us who were not part of the group to present at LC Auditorium rallied behind us. We were becoming XUHS Class of 1966 and not just a bunch of individuals sharing common classrooms 25 years before.

Needless to say, we were stupendous on the night of the presentation.

Fallen Comrades

Romy Gabriel called me last night to inform me of the sudden passing of our friend Jing Manalo who was the founder and president of the Christian Youth Development Association (CYDA). Romy, along with Nelson Ganacial and I were co-advisers of this group of Development Communications students of Xavier University (XU). It was a great shock to me. Romy passed the phone to Aida and we talked for a while; a little while later I was able to talk to Juliecar whom I had not seen since those days with CYDA. Romy's wife Sarah was also a co-founder of CYDA.

The last time I was in CDO was in October of last year when I was able to take a few pictures of our classmates. I regret to say that I was not aware of the passing of Enteng Rodriguez sometime this year. Though he was bedridden with one of hi legs amputated when last I saw him, Enteng was in fine spirits and joked a lot when we visited him a couple of times. He shed a tear when Roy Baltazar told him our prayers were with him. I am glad to have had the chance to snap a few photos of him.

Romy Gabriel informs me that he has a new apo. Congratulations Romy and Sarah! Let's go and keep on populating the earth. I have one granddaughter of my own and you can check out her webdite here.

40th Anniversary

It has crept and it has crawled, it has slowly, inexorably, unremittingly made its way and now, it is upon us. The Fortieth Anniversary or, as Kuya Germs and his wards and followers call it: "40th year anniversary". Well, I'm not entertained at all. Forty years is a long time when one stops a bit and thinks about it but, living each day one day at a time, one fails to really notice the milestones as they fade into yesterday. Tomorrow never stops coming and this is just fine with me. I am sure everyone agrees and says, "I'll drink to that!".

I just received a text message from Romy Gabriel saying he just got the text message I sent him ages ago. Well, two weeks ago to be closer to the exact date. Try to Google: XUHS 1966. We are now listed in the search engines courtesy of yours truly.

The meeting that never was

Meetings are always fun when they happen, but as current President Romy Gabriel can attest, it requires a great deal of consultation to agree on a suitable schedule when many can attend. The magic of cell phones and text messaging makes a difficult task somewhat simpler to facilitate as I observed Romy put after his main message a tailender: "pass it on"

Roy had graciously agreed to host a meeting that saturday but one by one people who thought they had time to attend begged off due to one reason or another, not the least of which might be the worsening traffic conditions in CDO. So there we were with old time music playing on Roy's stereo, red wine and sinugbang panga. lechon manok. kinilaw atbp., discussing every topic under the sun including my favorite which is Social Inequality.

What have I been doing? Well, as they say I'm "confined to quarters" which might sound to be a lousy situation to be in but I manage and well, I have got a DSL Internet connection so I can stay online as long as I want. it is superfast and I don't bother with dialing up. Travelling is always nice and I would have wanted to come to CDO at least every two months but circumsstances have conspired to confine my meanderings to the World Wide Web which is not such a bad thing at all. I have started a thread on flowers where I intend to show pictures of different blooms I encounter especially the wild flowers which no one really cares about.

I have also started a kind of Music Diary which consists of song lyrics that I like. I cannot post the actual songs but maybe the lyrics will have to do for now and try to keep nostalgia alive. To tell the truth, I have run out of pictures and I would sure appreciate a litle help here. Send me pictures! :)

Re-invention

I have not been back to CDO in quite a while. The last time I was there was in October of last year. I had great hopes for some ideas I was trying out. But things did not really work out as well as I had planned you know, Parkinson's Law: if something bad can happen, then it will or maybe I should think in terms of: Man proposes and God disposes. Either way, I was stuck with only myself and lots of plans and no way to implement them. I had bought some equipment on installment never dreaming that after a couple of installments I would be hard pressed to continue payments. Reluctantly I bid goodbye to the computer and peripherals and the 15,000 bucks I shelled out to earn the dubious distinction of having owned it for a while.

As they say Necessity is the Mother of Invention. It appears to me that God doesn't have a place for me in the afterlife yet so I was forced to reinvent myself once more. How many times have I had to do that? I have lost count and nobody really cares anyway. So, I'm not dead yet and so are you. Talk to me, let me know your mind. Let others know what you think. It has been several months since I was in Cagayan de Oro City and I guess you could say I am out of touch with all the classmates of old (I'm not saying "the old classmates" hehehe), who might not find me agreeable at all most of the time but who I think of time and again. I do miss the times spent just hanging out and nursing a beer or two and reminiscing about the times that have gone by.

We were quite active then with our Medical and Dental Missions, the mass feeding of little children with smiling faces and tree-planting activities that we had soon after our Silver Jubilee. I wonder if the trees survived? We never came back to check on their growth. I still keep the hope alive that we can be doing somemore things that will not benefit ourselves directly but which will mean something to other people.
