"Chicago police said Saturday the protesters charged with plotting terrorist acts had planned to attack police stations and squad cars with firebombs, in addition to President Barack Obama's campaign headquarters and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's house -- all to divert attention from other planned actions meant to disrupt the NATO summit.

Undercover officers infiltrated the group of NATO summit protesters, watching them as they allegedly made Molotov cocktails, which are bottles filled with flammable liquid. Sources say the suspects had planned to attack at least four police stations with the firebombs.

"It's a very, very dangerous weapon that these guys were trying to make," said 'ABC7 security expert Jody Weis, former Chicago police superintendent. "Depending how they make it, it can actually be like a jelly gasoline mixed with that so that can actually be like napalm."

"When someone is in possession of Molotov cocktails, that makes it pretty imminent," said current CPD superintendent Garry McCarthy.

According to court records, two undercover operatives infiltrated the Bridgeport group and police found, "...weapons, four completed Molotov cocktails...plans for...pipe bombs, Chicago area map, computer equipment, recording devices, video cameras, cell phones and an assault vest."

"They are not anarchists, they don't belong to a black bloc organization. They are involved with non violent protests," Michael Deutsch, National Lawyers Guild.

On Wednesday, members of the Chicago Police Department's Organized Crime Division raided the Bridgeport apartment where the protesters were staying, seizing the firebombs and arresting nine people, sources said.

Subsequent interviews yielded information on the three suspects as well as physical evidence authorities say was in process of being made when the men were arrested.

Police seized a mortar gun, swords, a cross-bow, throwing star, ninja knives and knives with brass-knuckle handles.

Contrary to what was said the last few days by attorneys representing the suspects, police and prosecutors say they did have a search warrant and arrest warrants at the time they raided the Bridgeport home Wednesday night.

Early Saturday, the three protesters were charged with three felony counts: possession of an explosive or incendiary device, conspiracy to commit terrorism and providing material support to terrorism, according to Harrison District Police Lt. Kenneth Stoppa. They face the first state terrorism charges ever lodged in Illinois.

The three charged men were identified by police and their attorneys as Brian Church, 20, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; Jared Chase, 24, of Keene, N.H.; and Brent Vincent Betterly, 24, of Oakland Park, Fla.

Authorities say the three came to Chicago last month from Florida to take part in May Day protests, including a demonstration by Black Bloc anarchists in front of Chicago's Bank of America.

"Several weeks ago we began working with the Chicago Police Department to investigate information about individuals traveling to or already present in Chicago who were conspiring to commit terrorist acts of violence or destruction against targets during protest against the NATO summit," said Cook Co. State's Attorney Anita Alvarez.

"We believe it is a setup, an entrapment to the highest degree, and it is sensationalism by the police and the state to discredit the protesters," said Michael Deutsch, National Lawyers Guild.

Chase's Facebook page displays a mugshot of himself from a prior arrest and a personal logo complete with assault rifles. Chase has become a known figure in the occupy movement. In Miami, he even did an interview about outside agitators.

"There was criminal elements that like to come in and infiltrate our camps, which is something that happens at every Occupy camp around the country," he said in February.

Chase is a well-known figure in the Occupy Miami movement. Miami TV recently showed him living in a slum where Occupy members had moved after being dislodged by police and where he was arrested this year on two occasions for loitering and prowling and for petty theft.

Betterly, originally from Massachusetts, was also arrested in Florida in 2006 for battery and trespass.

Alvarez singled out the youngest suspect, Church.

"As they planned how to use Molotov cocktails, Church at one point asked others if they had ever seen a cop on fire, and I quote, "As he discussed throwing a Molotov cocktail into the 9th District police station," she said.

"This plot very clearly does not represent protest behavior. This is criminal behavior. And this represents fulfillment of our obligation," said Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy.

Saturday afternoon, a judge set bail at $1.5 million for each of the three men accused. A small group of protesters was also in court at the time three suspects were making their initial bond appearances.

The defense attorneys in court Saturday said all of this was the product of undercover police officers and the Chicago Police Department "attracting and provoking the acts" the men are charged with. They say the police brought the elements of the alleged bombs, and the men were provoked into making them at the hands of police.

Federal charges against the three men are also possible, sources said."

The police picked some prominent protesters who happened to have 'ninja knives', supplied them with materials for Molotov cocktails and actually encouraged the protesters to put them together - kinda dumb when you consider that the materials are glass jars and gasoline, something the protesters could have supplied for themselves if they actually wanted to - and then arrested them.

The point, of course, is to discourage peaceful protest against the 1% and their politician assistants. The disgusting media plays an important propaganda role in repeating the police/1% spin.

I've said this about young Muslim males, and I'll say it about Occupy protesters: dudes, you have to stop falling for these police tricks!

Following the end of ElBaradei’s third term, the appointment of Yukiya Amano as IAEA chief dealt a severe blow to relations between the agency and the Iranian government. Indeed, a cable from the US embassy in Vienna back to State Department headquarters in Washington, revealed as a result of the WikiLeaks disclosures, vividly substantiated Iranian concerns. The cable states explicitly that Amano is “fully in our [the US] court for all strategic issues including the handling of the Iranian nuclear file.” On the basis of his activities since assuming the post of director-general, Iran had already concluded that Amano was following Washington’s mandates rather than those assigned to him by the IAEA. The leaked cable only reinforced this impression.
More generally, Iran has come to believe that the West is using the nuclear issue as an instrument for other strategic goals unrelated to proliferation, such as regime change, and that this is the true purpose of the multilateral and unilateral sanctions imposed on Iran. This perception leads Iranians to conclude that the West is not sincere in its negotiating posture, since its interests lie in prolonging the nuclear crisis, which offers an additional (pretextual) instrument of leverage against Iran. Not surprisingly, then, I think that the initial confidence-building measure adopted by Iran should be met by a parallel measure on the side of the P5+1 related to sanctions. In particular, suspending implementation of the EU embargo on Iranian oil exports set to go into effect in July would be an important first step on the side of the Western powers and an expression of good will in advance of the Baghdad talks."

Hersh may have been referring to the Sovereign Order of Malta, a Roman Catholic organization commited to "defence of the Faith and assistance to the poor and the suffering," according to its website.
"Many of them are members of Opus Dei," Hersh continued. "They do see what they're doing -- and this is not an atypical attitude among some military -- it's a crusade, literally. They see themselves as the protectors of the Christians. They're protecting them from the Muslims [as in] the 13th century. And this is their function."

There are two mysteries about Obama's commitment to a permanent American war on the innocent people of Afghanistan:

Why? What possible American strategic interest could this never-ending war possibly serve? Why continue to fight a war - one you can't afford except by running the printing presses to fund the war, which in turn erodes your position as having the world reserve currency, a position which allows you to run those presses white hot without causing ruinous inflation - you are obviously, and embarrassingly, losing badly, where things are only going to get worse?
Why does nobody in the American media point out the obvious absurdity?

Of course, the answer is . . . Jews. The war on Afghanistan is part of the Zionist program to destabilize and weaken Pakistan. The Jewish money can't force an attack on Iran - an attack that would cause gas prices to go up so high Mitt would win in a landslide - so Afghanistan is the consolation War For The Jews. This war is ruinous for the United States (not to mention Afghanistan and Pakistan), but not immediately and obviously so, and won't end Obama's chances of reelection. The mysteries are easily explained, but can't be spoken out loud.

I've come to the conclusion that if your geopolitical analysis isn't profoundly 'anti-Semitic', it is wrong.

"Much of the argument, I remember, revolved around the demographic concept of “greater than expected death.” The available census figures in the Soviet Union in the 1930s were not particularly sturdy, in presumed contrast to the reorts these days of the US Bureau of the Census, So I remain completely astounded by the fact that half a million more Americans than usual on current demographic trends can die and there’s no public commotion or curiosity.

I’m referring to the story by Ron Unz we ran last week, comparing drug scandals, Melamine in China and Vioxx the United States.

To remind readers:

In September 2004, Merck, one of America’s largest pharmaceutical companies, issued a sudden recall of Vioxx, its anti-pain medication widely used to treat arthritis-related ailments.

There was a fair amount of news coverage after the recall, but pretty slim considering the alleged 55,000 death toll. A big class-action lawsuit dragged its way through the courts for years, eventually being settled for $4.85 billion in 2007.

Senior FDA officials apologised for their lack of effective oversight and promised to do better in the future. The Vioxx scandal began to sink into the vast marsh of semi-forgotten international pharmaceutical scandals.

The year after Vioxx was pulled from the market, the New York Times and other media outlets ran minor news items, usually down column, noting that American death rates had undergone a striking and completely unexpected decline.

Typical was the headline on a short article that ran in the 19 April 2005 edition of USA Today: ‘USA Records Largest Drop in Annual Deaths in at Least 60 Years.’ During that one year, American deaths fell by 50,000 despite the growth in both the size and the age of the nation’s population. Government health experts were quoted as being greatly “surprised” and “scratching [their] heads” over this strange anomaly, which was led by a sharp drop in fatal heart attacks.

For his Melamine/Vioxx comparison, Unz went back to those 2005 stories. Quick scrutiny of the most recent 15 years worth of national mortality data provided on the US Government’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website offered Unz some useful clues.

“We find the largest rise in American mortality rates occurred in 1999, the year Vioxx was introduced, while the largest drop occurred in 2004, the year it was withdrawn,” says Unz. “Vioxx was almost entirely marketed to the elderly, and these substantial changes in the national death-rate were completely concentrated within the 65-plus population.

“The FDA studies had proven that use of Vioxx led to deaths from cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes, and these were exactly the factors driving the changes in national mortality rates.”

“Patterns of cause and effect cannot easily be proven,” Unz continues. “But if we hypothesise a direct connection between the recall of a class of very popular drugs proven to cause fatal heart attacks and other deadly illnesses with an immediate drop in the national rate of fatal heart attacks and other deadly illnesses, then the statistical implications are quite serious.”

Unz makes the point that the users of Vioxx were almost all elderly, and it was not possible to determine whether a particular victim’s heart attack had been caused by Vioxx or other factors. But he concludes: “Perhaps 500,000 or more premature American deaths may have resulted from Vioxx [my italics], a figure substantially larger than the 3,468 deaths of named individuals acknowledged by Merck during the settlement of its lawsuit. And almost no one among our political or media elites seems to know or care about this possibility.”

I remarked to Unz that it seemed truly incredible that a greater than expected death rate of this dimension should scarcely have caused a ripple.

“I’m just as astonished,” he said. “One might conjecture that the mainstream media and the government officials were all bribed or intimidated by Merck’s lawyers, lobbyists, and advertising budget into averting their eyes or holding their tongues. But from 2004 onwards, huge numbers of America’s toughest trial lawyers were suing Merck for billions based on Vioxx casualties – didn’t they notice the dramatic drop in the national death rate? “

“The inescapable conclusion is that in today’s world and in the opinion of our own media, American lives are quite cheap, unlike those in China.”

“Besides,” says Unz laughing, “it shows the stupidity of our political leaders that they didn’t seize upon this great opportunity. They should have just renamed Vioxx the ‘Save Social Security Drug,’ and distributed it free in very large doses to everyone, starting on their 65th birthday. Maybe they should have even made it mandatory, three times per day. At sufficiently large levels of national consumption, Vioxx could have almost singlehandedly eliminated all our serious budget deficit problems. ‘Vioxx—The Miracle Anti-Deficit Drug.’”"

I am reminded of the large number of Americans - mostly minorities, but all poor - who live in the pollution belts in places like Texas and Louisiana. The most toxic industries are concentrated together, along with the underclasses who have to bear the health risks, and nobody notices.

We're starting to see the phenomenon that formerly third-world countries are taking care of big public health risks better than formerly first-world countries. Even if the Chinese make mistakes, there are people in the government who care. The same can't be said of the governments of the United States and other formerly first-world countries, who would completely side with the corporate killers and corporate profits.

"Why did Alberta election pollsters get it wrong?":

"For days leading up to the Alberta election, every public opinion poll suggested the upstart Wildrose Party was poised to end the Progressive Conservatives' 41-year rule in the province.

Journalist and blogger David Climenhaga, on the other hand, argued that "pollsters, as a group, really blew it."

He told Power Play that Albertans were inundated with pollsters' robocalls during the campaign, and many voters were averse to answering the phone.

"The only people who bothered to answer those questionnaires were committed people and I believe that skewed the result in favour of ideological parties," Climenhaga said.

A University of Lethbridge professor said he believes "a combination of all of the above" resulted in Monday's stunning election results.

Geoffrey Hale, who teaches political science, told Power Play that at least one last-minute election poll picked up the shift in favour of the PCs.

Whatever led the Tories to an unexpected victory, de Clercy said it's important to remember that polls' sample sizes and methodology can have serious limitations.

For example, if pollsters are only calling landlines, they won't be catching younger voters who are more likely to only use cellphones, she said. Depending on the time of the day and the geographic area, pollsters may be capturing a segment of voters that doesn't represent a wider public opinion or reflect the nuances of voting habits.

"Pollsters are trying to keep up with the trends," de Clercy said, but they don't always succeed."

This was no mistake. It was a conspiracy to radically change Canada. Pollsters know their methods lead their polls to skew right (the fact that they polled using landlines is the key). It's not a bug, it's a feature. They sold this feature to the ultra right. The idea was to convince Albertans that a libertarian victory was inevitable. Conservative voters would be disheartened and stay away from the polls. Undecideds would vote for the party they they perceived would be the sure winner. Nobody wants to waste a vote, and nobody wants to be associated with the loser. The pollsters were able to sell their services simply because the results were pre-cooked, and they could assure their customers that faulty methodology across the industry would mean all results - even those sold to impartial purchasers - would be pre-cooked.

This fraud on the people of Alberta is bad enough, but we head into conspiracy with the role of the mainstream media. The story never waivered - the libertarians were sure to win. Even better, what did this mean for Canada? Libertarian wins across the country. No sense putting up a fight. It is inevitable. The voters in Alberta actually foiled an ultra-right-wing coup d'état.

Watch for more of this, at least until it is common knowledge how crooked the polling firms are. I know they have other methods of polling. That's great. Use them. However, given the way unequal access to technology has created - or at least relabeled - these new class divisions, I doubt they can ever really determine voter intentions. We should stop listening to polls, and stop buying media products that serve polls up to us.

"Ontario Budget: McGuinty agrees to Horwath’s tax-the-rich scheme":

"Premier Dalton McGuinty has agreed to NDP Leader Andrea Horwath’s “tax-the-rich” scheme in order to ensure the minority Liberals’ budget passes Tuesday, averting a snap election call.

McGuinty emerged Monday afternoon from a 30-minute closed-door meeting with Horwath — his second in as many days — to announce he had made significant compromises to win her backing.

“They wanted a tax on the rich, I wanted to pay down our deficit faster,” the premier told a packed news conference.

“We all gave a little bit,” he said, referring to the new “NDP surtax” on people earning more than $500,000 a year.

Horwath told reporters after McGuinty’s news conference that “our caucus does not intend to defeat the government. We will not be plunging this province into an election.”

She won a huge victory by convincing the Liberals to impose the 2 per cent surtax on 23,000 high-income earners that would raise $470 million in 2013-14 with all proceeds going toward paying down the $15.2 billion deficit.

The tax — which would cost someone making $600,000 an extra $3,120 annually — will be in place until Ontario balances the budget, now scheduled for 2017-18.

Horwath’s proposal is popular with Ontarians — a Forum poll last week suggested 78 per cent support with only 17 per cent opposition — and many Grit MPPs urged McGuinty to adopt the levy.

But last week the premier expressed reservations in part because he still bears scars from raising taxes after the 2003 and 2007 elections despite promising not to do so.

At the Liberals’ caucus meeting last Tuesday, MPPs and cabinet ministers spoke overwhelmingly in favour of making the concession to Horwath — to McGuinty’s chagrin.

On Monday, Grit MPPs confided that they hoped the premier would cede to their wishes."

Full congratulations to Andrea Horwath and the Ontario NDP - acting, in obvious contrast to the federal NDP, like a real socialist party - for fighting the good fight and winning. McGuinty did his party no favors by treating the request for this e-x-t-r-e-m-e-l-y popular tax as if he was having his fingernails slowly pulled out.

More sanity in Canada: "Alberta election: PCs steamroll past Wildrose Party". The ultra-ultra-ultra right tired to run a pure libertarian party in Alberta, led by a Sarah Palin clone (the whole exercise smacks of American political consultants and I'm sure the bus boobs issue wasn't a mistake). Despite the assurances of the lying mainstream media that this would be a slam dunk win, the libertarians didn't do well at all (the 'bozone layer'). As stupid as the Conservatives have been over the decades - squandering the massive natural wealth of Alberta so they could hand almost all of it over to the ultra rich, while permanently wrecking the ecology of the province - the people of Alberta aren't so dumb that they would vote for an even nuttier bunch of crooks.
