“Participation in this program is as easy as picking up a few extra items during your next trip to the grocery store, and dropping them off at your library during ‘Food for Fines’ week,” says Deb Sullivan, community relations director for York County Libraries. “For each item someone donates, York County Libraries will deduct $1 from his or her late fees. During this strained economy, both food banks and libraries have seen significant increases in usage, so this project offers a win-win solution for folks; a way to take care of their late fees while helping their neighbors in need.”

All food donations should be canned or non-perishable (boxes, bags) and need to be in date. Suggested items include canned fruits and vegetables, tomato sauce, soup, cereal, rice, beans, macaroni and cheese, juice, peanut butter, and canned meat like tuna, chicken, and salmon that don’t require refrigeration prior to opening. The libraries will not accept out-of-date food, dented or rusted cans for this food drive. “This program applies to late fees only, and does not credit to items that have been lost,” adds Sullivan. “If someone has a fee for a lost item, he/she can talk with a librarian about payment.”

Food will be collected at the following York County Libraries and donated to food pantries in their service areas. It will be held from 1:30–3:00 p.m. at the West Manchester Mall. The free event features nationally-known children’s author and illustrator Will Hillenbrand who will tell stories and sketch characters from his books. Additional entertainment includes face painting by “Changing Faces for Fun”, and storytelling by Beth Rebert.

The celebration is the culminating event of this year’s “Grade One At the Library” program which encourages first grade students to get and use a library card. The library card campaign, which kicked off in September, is made possible through sponsorship by PeoplesBank. Grade one participants receive incentives during three library visits, with the final prize being Hillenbrand’s book “Down by the Station”. Children are encouraged to bring their copy along to the celebration event for the author to autograph. In addition, several of Hillenbrand’s books will be available for purchase and signing that day.

Dover Community Library Celebrates First Anniversary in New Space

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-d45Y5X7C4NA/Tqlqc4D1zkI/AAAAAAAAAQA/N6XRZdV5rww/s320/main%2Bdesk%2B2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5668178650339855938" />
Dover Community Library, located at 3700-3 Davidsburg Road, Dover, will observe the one year anniversary of the renovation and expansion of the library on Saturday, October 29, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Visitors are invited to see the whimsical, new mural in the program room. They built a small group of stone dwellings, now known as the Coulsontown Cottages, similar to the homes that they had in Wales. A few are still standing today, some privately owned and two that are being restored by The Friends of the Welsh Cottages, a branch of the Old Line Museum in Delta, PA. But where did the slate workers and their families live before they built the individual cottages?

As part of Summer Reading Club, Collinsville Community Library invites interested individuals and families to two events to learn about Stonetown, PA, an excavated area believed to be one of the first residences of the early Welsh settlers. Meet Steve Ciborowski on Tuesday, June 28 at 6:30 pm at Collinsville Library, 2632 Delta Road, Brogue, PA. Steve will talk about his recent excavations at the site of a large apartment building that dates from 1805. Originally built as a residence for the Scot-Irish and English workers, the building housed many Welsh workers and their families when they came later. It is also documented that the Welsh held religious services there before they built permanent churches in the area. Steve will display numerous artifacts that he found at the site. Families may sign up to visit the site and help with the dig on Thursday, June 30 at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday evening’s presentation is a prerequisite to participate in the trip to the site.

Steven Ciborowski is an avocational archeologist and historian who grew up in the Bel Air area of Harford County and with his wife Kerry and two daughters Jennie and Susan have lived in the Delta area of York County since 1984. At an early age he became enamored with nature and exploring the countryside and has been collecting antique bottles and artifacts since the age of twelve. He is a member of the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad Historical Society, the Old Line Museum, and has been an Assistant Scoutmaster of Mason Dixon Troop 400 since 1987. The family maintains approximately a half mile of original Ma & Pa Railroad tracks that run through their property.

Please call the library at 717-927-9014 to register. If the library is closed, leave a message with your name and number of attendees. The Stonetown Story and Dig programs are a part of the 2011 Summer Reading Club theme, One World, Many Stories. Collinsville Community Library is located on Rt. 74, 9 miles south of Red Lion and 11 miles north of Delta, PA.

Master Puppeteer to Tour Libraries

Master puppeteer Steve Abrams is bringing "Puppet Theatre Inside Out" to local libraries this summer as part of the York County Libraries and Get Outdoors (GO) York “One World Many Stories- GO and Explore Your World” summer reading club and physical activity program.

Abrams performances are free and will be held at several libraries. Out of that has grown another passion…to create meaningful parent/child experiences in order to enrich and strengthen family relationships. Thus, she started “Treasured Times” story time/cooking demonstrations with her family in early 2007.

“We all have heard that reading with your kids is one of the most significant things you can do with your children to improve their academics,” says Hegberg. “I believe that cooking with your kids is just as important. It teaches reading, math skills, following directions, improves motor skills, helps finicky eaters broaden their horizons and teaches an important life skill.”

The events at the libraries are free to the public as part of the combined summer program. He is making the trek with the creators of the book, Author Anthony Fredericks and Illustrator Andrea Everhart. Their tale features Boomer and his beloved championship baseball team, the York Revolution.

Created as an ABC book, it can be read at two different reading levels. There is language that appeals to the very young, plus additional text that provides interesting facts about the team for older kids and parents. Fine details in the colorful pictures give clues about the libraries and the York Revolution too.

The book is an outgrowth of the 2011 season partnership between the
York Revolution and York County Libraries. The venture is aimed at
helping the libraries to raise both money and awareness for the many free
services they provide to the community.

Books will be sold for $10 each, with proceeds benefitting York County
Libraries. Fredericks, Everhart and Boomer will be appearing at the following
locations to share excerpts from the story and to sign books.

Saturday, June 11
Summer Reading Club & Go York Kick-Off Festivities
featuring
B is for Boomer Book Launch
Book Sales & Signing:
11 AM – 2 PM Sovereign Bank Stadium

Excerpts Read at:
11:30 AM Sovereign Bank Stadium
12:30 PM Sovereign Bank Stadium

Tuesday, June 14
11:30 am Dillsburg Area Public Library
2:00 pm Red Land Community Library

Thursday, June 16
10:30 am Paul Smith Library of Southern York County
1:30 pm Village Library

Tuesday, June 21
10:00 am Martin Library
1:00 pm Kreutz Creek Valley Library Center

Wednesday, June 22
10:30 am Mason-Dixon Public Library

Thursday, June 23
10:30 am Dover Area Community Library
1:30 pm Glatfelter Memorial Library

Tuesday, June 28
11:00 am Kaltreider-Benfer Library
2:00 pm Collinsville Community Library

Thursday, June 30
11:00 am Arthur Hufnagel Public Library
1:30 pm Guthrie Memorial Library – Hanover’s Public Library

Free Kick-Off Festivities Slated Saturday

Families in search of free entertainment will want to head to Sovereign Bank Stadium in York this Saturday, June 11 for the official kick-off festivities for the York County Libraries and Get Outdoors (GO) York combined summer program. Go York wants kids and their families to get outside and move, and the libraries want them to be reading and learning in fun ways so they keep their literacy skills sharp. Together we are encouraging healthy bodies and minds!”

This year’s combined themes - “One World, Many Stories” and “GO and Explore Your World” - encourage kids from birth to age 18 to learn about countries and people around the globe. Registration for the free program begins June 1 at all 13 York County libraries and online at www.yorklibraries.org. Participants will each receive an official “passport to adventure” for recording the minutes they read and tracking the checkpoints they discover. Kids can sign-up for the program anytime this summer, and may track their accomplishments through Labor Day, September 5.

The program is proudly sponsored by The York Water Company, with additional support by Capital BlueCross and the York Newspaper Company.
Prizes are also generously provided county-wide by the York Fair, Chick-fil-A, Maize Quest, Harrisburg Senators, Isaac’s, the York Revolution, Regal Cinemas, Rita’s, and Brown’s Orchards and Farm Markets. In addition, many local businesses provide prize incentives to kids participating at a library near them. And as the finale to the overall program, GO York will award its grand prizes including an Xbox Kinect Gaming System and camping equipment at Noon on Saturday, October 8 during the libraries’ Reading Rainbow celebration at the West Manchester Mall.

More information about the York County Libraries summer reading club and GO York physical activity program can be found at www.yorklibraries.org and www.goyork.org.

Harley – Davidson Foundation Sponsors 2011 Youth Empowerment Summit at Martin Library

Caption:
(May 5, 2011 – York, PA) Members of Martin Library’s Teen Advisory Board join representatives of Harley-Davidson at the 5th Annual Youth Empowerment Summit. Open 24/7, the eBranch will offer free downloadable eAudios and eBooks at www.yorklibraries.org.

To use the new service, residents need a York County Libraries card (which is also free) from any of the 13 locations. With the library card, customers can access the virtual bookshelves remotely from home, work, and even a vacation spot via an Internet connection on their computer or with a compatible wireless device. There is a link on the website for interested individuals to determine whether or not their devices will be able to borrow library books.

Cardholders will be able to browse virtual library shelves online and can select up to five eMaterials to check out. There will be around 1,000 items available when the eBranch launches. They will include popular and bestselling titles, and everything from business to mysteries to romance. When a title someone wants is in use, an eRequest can be placed. An email notifies the person when the requested eAudio or eBook is ready for download.

Loan period for the items is two weeks with an option to reduce the timeframe to seven days if that is preferred. At the end of the loan period, the materials automatically expire and are no longer readable. Borrowers simply delete them from their computers or devices. Because of this automatic return process, there are never any late fees for eMaterials.

For individuals wanting some help on how to set up their computers and devices to use library eItems, several classes and informal sessions have been scheduled. Additional sessions will be added with details posted at www.yorklibraries.org.
To date the following times are scheduled.
Classes
Wednesday, March 30 1-3 pm
Paul Smith Library
80 Constitution Ave.
Shrewsbury, PA 17361
235-5806

Friday, April 1 9 -11 am
Arthur Hufnagel Public Library of Glen Rock
32 Main Street
Glen Rock, PA 17327
235-1127

Tuesday, April 5 1-3 pm
Martin Library
159 E.
