It's been a while since posting anything. I was having a great pool season until i hit the wall and amassed six straight losses. On the writing front, nothing much is going on for me. I'm just biding my time, drinking my wine. Here in Seoul, Andy and I are opening a bar. All my effort for the time being will be on this, but sure there will be some pen strokes culled out of this.

If anybody has any ideas for a name, tell me.

A lot of my friends from home ask me what life is like in Asia. I've always thought that advertisements are a great refelction of what a country wants to be. Here are some Soju (Korea's national alcohol, something like a 50% strength, very plain tasting, rice-made vodka) advertisements featuring some very sexy women. This is an interesting glimpse into Korean culture.

I have my story "For Monks Only" in this issue of Poet Tree, which you can order here. This is my best story to date, in my opinion, and gave the name to this blog. I really suggest you buy yourself a copy of this book--this short story is long, so you're really getting your money's worth. This story is my version of Soul Mountain by Gao Xingjian. He won the 2000, Nobel Prize in Literature.

The Sacred Calendar

Some of you may know that recently at HUFS I was asked by my level 5 students to a do a calendar reading for them. They had heard that I was once studying to be a Mayan Deeper (Aj Q'ij, in K'iche') and were curious about their own signs and personalities. I looked on the web for a simple answer to their questions (doing a reading myself is quite laborious and time-consuming because I'm not a mathematical savant and I'm out of practice. I found the Internet to be strangely devoid of solid information on the subject and would like to divulge what I know to you. I just wanted to update this page a bit for you all. I haven't been working on my writing that much since I'm working like a dog. The good news is i only have about 7 more weeks of teaching this semester and then I'll have a month off in which I can pound the pad a bit. So please be patient with me. Still, you can check my publishing history which has a lot of work on it. If there are any broken links, please leave a comment and I'll fix them.
