Earthquake in Nepal! Triple quake M4.3, M4.4 and M4.5 at Mugu on May 14

Kathmandu, May 14 National Seismological Center (NSC) web portal reported a minor earthquake measuring M4.3 on Richter scale in Western Nepal in the morning of May 14^th at 8:58am local time (03:13 UTC). According to the NSC the quake was epicentered at Mugu in Far Western Development Region of Nepal.

Update:
Another quake M4.4 (believed to be after shock) hit 5 minutes later. The center was 13.5km north of the center of the first hit. Again, another quake measuring M4.5 recorded at 15:44 local time (09:59 UTC) in the Western Mugu, center of which was 10km north the first center and 4km SSW from center of the second hit.

This is the 7^th quake above M4 in the region in this year.

May weather trend in Kathmandu in recent years

May is the hottest month in Kathmandu. This is also the month in which Kathmandu is blessed with pre-monsoon rain.

This year, the month started with slightly hotter than average May day, however, the temperature is gradually falling and nearing the average max of 30°C. The average maximum temperature in recent year also is in par with last 30 years' average, however, the average minimum temperature is 1.3°C higher than last 30 years' average min of 15°C. Whereas, this May, the average min temp of first five days is almost 3°C below the average.

The month of May in year 2012 was the hottest compared to the rest in recent years. In 2012, most of the days were at 30°C or above. In year 2012, May 24 and 25, registered the highest maximum temperature of 34°C, the highest for the month of May in recent years. On the same time, the year 2012 also had the lowest minimum temperature of 10°C for the month of May. On the other hand, year 2008 and 2011 Mays had the lowest maximum temperature of 28.9°C, and year 2011 had only 6 days with max temp at 30°C or above.

Average monthly rainfall in Kathmandu in May is 123.6mm. The maximum 24 hours rainfall recorded in May was 73.2mm in May 29, 1990. However, the average rainfall in past 6 year is below the 30 years' average at 110mm. The year 2012 May received less than 50% of the monthly rainfall, with just 52.8mm, whereas the preceding two years, 2010 and 2011 received more than average rainfall of 144mm and 157mm respectively. This year, except for some traces of rain on the evening of May 5^th, it is a dry month so far.

Kathmandu, April 28 National Seismological Center (NSC) web portal reported a moderate earthquake measuring M4.9 on Richter scale in Western Nepal at midnight (at 00:12am) of April 28^th (18:28 UTC on Apr 27). According to the NSC the quake was epicentered at Northern Bajhang in Far Western Development Region of Nepal.

This is the 6^th quake above M4 in the region in this year.

April weather trend in Kathmandu in recent years

April is the month of hot-n-dry daytime and windy evenings with sudden thunderstorms. The day-night time temperature difference in this month is vast as much as 20°C.

This year, the month started with average weather, however, by the end of the first week of the month, the average maximum temperature was higher by more than 2°C than the past 30 years average, whereas the average minimum temperature just matched with the monthly average minimum.

The month of April in year 2009 and 2010 were the hottest compared to the rest in recent years. In those years, more days were hotter than monthly average max of 28°C than more than 20 days registered above 30°C. April 24, 2009 was the record high for the month with the daytime maximum temperature of 35.2°C. Whereas April 7, 2008 saw the lowest minimum temperature of 7.6°C. Similarly, this year, April 21^st recorded the lowest maximum temperature of 16.2°C. In recent years, the average minimum temperature stayed 2° to 3°C above the average minimum for the month. However, this year (2013), so far the average minimum matches the monthly minimum of 11°C (this is bound to rise in coming days though).

Average monthly rainfall in Kathmandu in April is 61mm. The maximum 24 hours rainfall recorded in April was 74.2mm in Apr 1, 1991. April 2009 was the driest April with total of mere 11.3mm of rainfall. 2008 and 2010 also received just about half the average monthly rainfall. In rest of the years in the monthly rainfall in the month of April remained very much average in recent years. This year the total rainfall till the date is just 2mm.

2013, The hottest Holi in Kathmandu

The festival of color & water - "Phagu or Holi" in 2013 turns out to be the hottest holi in Kathmandu in recent years.

The maximum temperature on the day of holi in 2013 was recorded at 30.2°C, that is more than 2°C higher than the previous highest in year 2009. Except for 2.1mm of rain recorded on holi in 2011, holi-day in recent years stayed mostly dry, and this year was no exception.

Kathmandu, March 17 National Seismological Center (NSC) web portal reported a minor earthquake measuring M4.2 on Richter scale in Central Nepal at 17:44pm local time on Mar 17^th (11:59 UTC). According to the NSC the quake was epicentered at Dhanusa district in Central Development Region of Nepal.

The coordinates provided by the NSC indicates the epicenter is very close to Janakpur, the city of holy Ram Janaki temple.

Earthquake in Nepal! M5.4 at Rukum on Mar 6

Kathmandu, March 6 National Seismological Center web portal reported a moderate earthquake measuring M5.4 on Richter scale in Western Nepal at 10:34pm local time on Mar 6^th (16:49 UTC). According to the NSC the quake was epicentered at Rukum district in Mid-Western Development Region of Nepal.

According to the USGS, the seismic activity occured at the depth of 10km below surface.

Update:
Nepalnews.com, a leading Nepali new web portal reported, "at least two dozen people sustained 'minor injuries' as people rushed out of their houses in the District Headqaurters Musikot" citing the local officials.

It further says that one of the building Salle Airport in Musikot was partly damaged during the quake.

The tremor was felt by residents living as far as Pokhara and Butwal.

March weather trend in Kathmandu in recent years

Similar to the weather pattern of the previous month, mercury level in the month fluctuates within the range of as much as 20°C in a day. Thus, March is also the season of falling into prey of catching cold. And also thanks to the dryness, dust and pollen particles in air, much of Kathmanduites complain of throat problem in this season. KEEP A MASK HANDY all the time this month at least!!

This year, the month started with hot 30°C on the very first day and the minimum temperature down at 6.5°C, which is so far the hottest and the coldest day of the month.

The month of March in year 2010 was the warmest compared to the rest. In 2010, throughout the month, the daytime maximum temperature stayed above 25°C. Average monthly max in this year was almost 5°C above the monthly average of 24°C for past 30 years. Mar 24, in the same year was the warmest day with 33°C. Average minimum temperature in March 2010 was also almost 4° above the average monthly min at 10.9°C and number of days below 10°C was lowest in this year compared to the rest in recent years. In recent years both the max and min temperature stayed above the monthly averages for the month in past 30 years.

Average monthly rainfall in Kathmandu in March amounts to 34.2mm. The maximum 24 hours rainfall recorded in March was 39mm in Mar 12, 1978. Rainfall in the month of March remained very much average in recent years. However in last two years, the amount of rainfall collected in Kathmandu in March was about half the normal for the month. It is yet to see if March 2013 receives some decent amount of rainfall, that also directly affects the power supply in Nepal which mostly depends in run-off hydro power generation.

February weather trend in Kathmandu in recent years

Once it enters the month of February, winter is almost over for Kathmandu folks. Mercury level in February fluctuates within the range of as much as 20°C.

This year too, the month started with average temperature for the month, then it dipped again along with rainfall, which is very typical for the month. The month started with 25.5° then dipped down to 14° on the 5^th following the rainfall. The absolute max temp recorded, so far, this month is ~~27°C on the 13^th~~ 27.5°C on the 14^th, and the lowest 3.5°C on the 13^th.

The month of February in year 2009 was the warmest compared to the rest. In 2009, most of the days in February, daytime maximum stayed above 25°C. Average monthly max in this year was almost 5°C above the monthly average for past 30 years. Feb 20, in the same year was the warmest day with 28.6°C. Whereas, except for the year 2008, the average minimum temperature for the month in recent years stayed 2 to 3°C above the monthly average for past 30 years. Also the year 2008 was the only year in recent years that saw days below the freezing point: on Feb 1, 2, 4 & 5 in 2008 the lows were -0.5°, -0.5°, -0.2°, & -0.3°C respectively. On the other hand year 2007 did not log any days above 25°C, whereas 2008 logged one day above 25°C. In 2009 daytime maximum temperature in most of the days in Feb were above 25°C.

Average monthly rainfall in Kathmandu in February amounts to 17.5mm. February of 2008 and 2009 remained totally dry. The Valentine's Day in 2007 turned out to be the rainiest day in recent years with 45mm of rain in 24hours, probably the highest 24hours rainfall collected on a day in the month of February. The total February rainfall in this year was almost 72mm, way above the monthly average for the month. This year, as of Feb 17^th, Kathmandu received 36.4mm of rain.

Kathmandu, February 7 National Seismological Center web portal reported an earthquake measuring M4 on Richter scale in Western Nepal at 06:53am local time on Feb 7^th (01:08 UTC Feb 7). According to the NSC the quake was epicentered at Bajhang district in Far Western Development Region of Nepal.

Earlier earthquakes measuring to M4.7 (Jan 2), and M4.5 (Jan 18) hit the district this year. Hope for lesser casualties and damages.

January weather trend in Kathmandu in recent years

Though we have seen some record cold mornings in around second week of this month, the month of January 2013 can be considered to be in average compared to that in recent years.

The first week of the month started with average weather. In recent years, Kathmandu experienced merely a single day with sub-zero temperature. However, the second week of the month this year saw five consecutive days with mercury dive below zero degrees Celsius. On the morning of January 9^th mercury reading was fully 2 units below 0°C, a record low in decades. On the other hand, the average daytime maximum temperature and extreme max (till date) is in average compared to that in recent years.

The month of January in year 2009 and 2010 were warmest compared to the rest. In those years, most of the days in January, daytime maximum stayed above 20°C. Average monthly max in these years were 4°C above and average monthly minimum were 2°C above the monthly averages for past 30 years. Jan 28, 2009 was the warmest day with 25.8°C, whereas, Jan 23, 2008 was the coldest day with daytime max of mere 10.5°C.

Average monthly rainfall in Kathmandu in January amounts to 14mm. January of 2007 and 2009 remained totally dry. Except for 2012 and 2013, total monthly rainfall in the month remained way below the 30 years average reading. This year, till the date, Kathmandu already received 10.5mm of rain.

Kathmandu, January 9 National Seismological Center web portal reported an earthquake measuring M5.5 on Richter scale in Far Western Nepal at 13:29pm local time (7:44 UTC) on Jan 9^th. According to the NSC the quake was epicentered at Northern part of Bajura.

Earthquake in Nepal ! M4.7 hits Bajhang - Doti border on January 2 evening

Kathmandu, January 3 National Seismological Center web portal reported an earthquake measuring M4.7 on Richter scale in Far Western Nepal at 11:27pm local time (17:42 UTC) on Jan 2^nd. According to the NSC the quake was epicentered at Bajhang - Doti border.

December weather trend in Kathmandu in recent years

Unlike previous two months, December 2012 remained moderate. The daily mean and minimum temperature was in average for the month compared to those in recent years.

The first 10 days of the month saw unusually warmer days, that was very much similar to December in 2008. Dec 8^th recorded the highest minimum temperature of 9.4°C. Day time maximum temperature was above the comfort temperature zone of 18°C for twenty-five days, where as twenty-two days saw minimum temperature at 5 or below 5°C. Similarly, Dec 4 was the warmest day with daytime max with 21.6°C, and the 31^st was the coldest with the minimum of 1.3°C. On the other hand, Dec 21^th was the coolest day - the mercury could not rise beyond 16.6°C on this day.

Past thirty years data shows the average monthly rainfall in the month of December is 15.1mm. However, expect for the 3.6mm of rainfall in December in 2009, in recent years, the month of December remained totally dry. This year also, Kathmandu did not receive any rain at all in December.

NEA prolongs power outage secretively

KATHMANDU: The Load Dispatch Center of the Nepal Electricity Authority has extended daily power outage by two more hours without informing the public. NEA sources said top officials at the power monopoly had asked the center to add one more hour to the current 69-hour weekly outage, two weeks ago.

Sources said the government chose not to inform the public about the additional load-shedding hours on top of a December 8 load-shedding schedule fearing a backlash.

November weather trend in Kathmandu in recent years

Following the month of October in 2012, November 2012 also proved to be among the coldest November compared to past five years'. The daily mean and minimum temperature was comparable to those of November 2009.

The month saw only two days with daytime max exceeding 25°C, where as the minimum temperature stayed below 10°C expect for a day. The first day of November 2012 was the warmest with daytime maximum temperature of 25.7°C, while the 14th logged the lowest minimum of 4.6°C.

Past thirty years data shows the average monthly rainfall in the month of November is 7.9mm. However, expect for the 9.4mm rainfall in November 2011, the monthly rainfall in recent years is way below the average. November 2012 received only 1mm of rain.
