Yale demonstrates customisation capabilities

When choosing new materials handling equipment it is vital to purchase a product that meets the application requirements. There are times however when a standard product can not meet the specific requirements and a specially engineered product has to be designed.

Yale consistently demonstrates to its customers its commitment to providing the product they need, often by designing a customised truck. In the case of a major company supplying chipboard to furniture manufacturer production lines, this was the case.

Together with authorised dealer, Stapler Center Pieckert in Empfingen, Germany, Yale has designed a truck based on the Yale MR reach truck. Instead of a standard mast the truck features a new 3,000kg lifting device.

The modification allows the smooth chipboard to be placed on driven roller conveyors, which then passes them to stationary belts in the production facility. The truck, which is now 4,000mm long and 1,700mm wide, has hydraulic clamps that hold the chipboard securely as it is being transported.

Equipped with an 840Ah battery for multiple-shift use the truck can be operated by one operator who also controls and monitors all the truck functions on four different displays.

In addition to having to modify the steelwork, all the functions of the truck, sensors and limit switches in the CANbus control system had to be redesigned. The truck has now been in service for over six months and is expected to operate for around 2,800 hours per year.

Yale expands Dealer network in Russia

Yale has strengthened its commitment to the Russian market after concluding negotiations with three new independent Dealers.

NPK Avtomatizatsiya in St Petersburg, LADA DC in Togliatti and Business Machinery Group in Yekaterinburg have become the latest exclusive Authorised Dealers to distribute and service its range of Yale forklift trucks and warehouse equipment.

Senior Management from each dealership attended a successful New Dealer Meeting in St Petersburg in July to discuss the long-term strategy for Yale in Russia and how to build the brand in the country by working together.

Long-term and meaningful relationships

Christophe Maillet, Regional Manager for Yale Europe commented: “Russia is an extremely important market for Yale and we intend to work closely with our existing and new Dealers to continue to build long-term and meaningful relationships with customers by providing them with the highest levels of customer service, in the delivery of new forklift trucks manufactured in Europe and aftersales support.

Yale strengthens its distribution channel in the Netherlands

In a move to strengthen the Yale distribution channel in the Netherlands, Wynmalen B.V., the Authorised Dealer in the Netherlands for Yale Europe Materials Handling, has been purchased by Peter Venn, who, through his ownership of Yale SLT Fördertechnik GmbH, is a Yale exclusive Dealer in the east of Germany. The new company will revert to its former name of ‘Yale Nederland B.V.’ with immediate effect.

Despite the challenging economic and market conditions the move demonstrates the commitment by Yale and Peter Venn to customers in the Netherlands and the development of the Yale brand in the Dutch market.

Mr. Venn has extensive industry knowledge and experience in running successful forklift truck dealerships that he will bring to the company. He sees the acquisition of Wynmalen B.V. as an excellent opportunity to build on the reputation of a Yale dealership that has been long-established in Vlaardingen and to increase market share and brand recognition in the Netherlands.

Continuing to run his dealership, Yale SLT Fördertechnik GmbH in Heidenau, the close relationship with Yale will be developed further to support the development of the new dealership and establish long term relationships with customers in the Netherlands.

Commenting on the acquisition he stated that: “Yale Nederland B.V. will focus on expanding the business and providing Yale forklift truck users with the highest possible levels of customer service. I am extremely happy to take over the long-standing business of Yale in the Netherlands. Yale is a well established brand with many significant and long-standing customers in the Netherlands. Yale has supplied versatile LPG-powered Veracitor GLP20VX forklift trucks to the Greencore Mineral Water at Lennoxtown in Scotland, the leading producer of customer-branded still and sparkling mineral water in the United Kingdom.

Yale has enjoyed a long and successful relationship with the Lennoxtown bottling plant and has supplied several Yale forklift trucks since the facility opened in 1987. The latest contract is for five 2.0 tonnes LPG-powered Yale Veracitor GLP20VX counterbalance forklift trucks for use in the raw materials store and to offload and transfer full pallets to trailers and into the warehouse.

Dedicated Drive-in Racking

The LPG-powered Yale Veracitor GLP20VX forklift trucks with their compact design (1157mm overall width) and Techtronix transmission were the ideal choice for use in the dedicated drive-in racking store at Lennoxtown, where palletised bottles are stored in marshalling lanes prior to shipment, and have helped to transform Greencore’s intensive loading applications.

Excellent Yale Service

The Warehouse Manager at Greencore in Lennoxtown, Jamie McNair said: “We are handling over 300 pallets per shift, so forklift reliability and productivity was very important in our decision to continue working with Yale. The new Veracitor VX forklift trucks have proved very successful and are ideal for working in both our raw materials store and the new drive-in racking warehouse."

Mr McNair concluded: “Consumption of bottled water in the UK is estimated at only a quarter of the bottled water consumed in Continental Europe, making this a business with significant growth potential, which we are well placed to meet with the assistance of suppliers like Yale.”

Brakes customised picking

Yale has supplied two bespoke MO10S wire guided VNA high level order pickers to Brakes at Leeds, for picking and handling professional catering equipment.

Working with the warehouse team at Brakes catering equipment, engineers from Yale reviewed the current order picking methods and rates to determine how to increase efficiency and productivity. The solution was a specially engineered version of the Yale MO10S order picker.

Non-standard features included:

A purpose designed picking gondola, capable of accepting a 1200 x 1000mm pallet from either side for increased handling flexibility.
An entry ramp fitted to the rising platform that can be lowered to allow a palletized load to be deposited or removed safely by hand pallet truck. The ramp is locked in the vertical position prior to lifting the gondola.

Brakes catering Equipment is the UK’s leading foodservice supplier to thousands of caterers, with a catalogue containing over 4000 items of professional catering equipment. Catalogue items vary in size from small utensils stored in partitioned locations, to hand picked cartons and palletised loads.

Picking flexibility

Equipment is received in the warehouse direct from manufacturers and stored in the VNA racking system according to a pre determined location plan, based on size and frequency of use. Fast moving items are located and picked from the lower shelf levels. Customer orders are picked using the Yale MO10S order pickers and then packed ready for next day delivery to anywhere in the UK.

Brakes catering equipment General Manager Martin Hall said: "Engineers from Yale evaluated the overall picking operation and refined the gondola design to suit our specific requirements".

"Once our operators had completed their familiarisation training on the new Yale MO10S order pickers, they were able to immediately benefit from the modern controls and increased productivity we were seeking", continued Mr Hall.

AC Technology

Designed specifically for use in distribution warehouses, the Yale MO10S VNA medium and high level order picker series benefit from the latest AC sealed motors on drive, lift and steering, with solid state CANbus communication. Available with1000Kg lift capacity and a10m pick height, limited to 5.3m with manual override at Brakes to avoid ceiling trusses.

The use of 3 phase AC technology on the MO Series with the MOSFET control system and four performance settings, allows for real-time monitoring of the trucks performance under all operating conditions. The addition of the optional supplementary lift for order picking direct to pallet or cage, when combined with the additional lift/lower and forward/reverse controls on both sides of the truck for off-platform use, makes the MO Series extremely versatile order picker at all operating heights up to 10m. Fast acceleration and diagonal lifting delivers optimal travel patterns to achieve consistently high pick rates.

Ergonomic Design

Operator ergonomics is crucial to order picking efficiency and productivity. On the Yale MO10S as supplied to Brakes, everything the operator sees and touches is harmonised to create a near perfect operating environment.

Every truck function can be controlled without the operator having to reposition the hands. Proportional butterfly controls and joystick levers allow for absolute control of the truck and picking platform or forks for efficient multiple picking routines under different operating conditions.

Single-minded Quality

It takes at least 12 years to mature the best selling Glenfiddich single malt whisky before it is ready to be bottled and shipped all over the world. It will therefore come as no surprise that at William Grant & Sons Distillers Customer Service Centre and bottling hall near Glasgow, they ensure that cases of Glenfiddich and their other top quality Scotch whisky brands are handled with care using Yale Veracitor VX Series forklift trucks.

The 30 strong fleet of Yale Veracitor VX IC-engined forklift trucks at the Bellshill site handle over 15000 pallets a month, ensuring delivery of over 11 million cases of William Grant’s best selling brands, including the Balvenie, Hendrick’s Gin, Reyka Vodka, Grant’s Whisky and Glenfiddich to over 180 countries worldwide.

Founded in 1886, William Grant & Sons is still family owned and one of Scotland’s leading independent distillers. With distilleries at Dufftown and Girvan, the company still produces its leading brands of Scotch whisky by traditional methods. Its continued success is due to the consistent quality of its products.

Considerable Yale Experience

Matured whiskies and other premium spirits are delivered to the Bellshill bottling plant and stored in the Vat Hall, from where they are bottled at a rate of 500 bottles per minute. The automated process starts in the Vat Hall, with bottles, caps and labels delivered from the dry goods warehouse to the bottling hall, where the bottles are rinsed, filled, capped and labelled, before emerging in the wet goods warehouse, where the cases are packed as cases of 6 bottles, palletised, stretch-wrapped and prepared for despatch.

With responsibility for the 33 teams operating in the wet goods warehouse, Gerry McEntee explained: "We have used Yale forklift trucks for 12 years, so have considerable experience of using the products and have always enjoyed a good working relationship with the Yale team in Scotland". "Yale forklift trucks have proved to be very reliable and the latest Veracitor VX models are also very productive, which is important as we have no room for error when unloading high value pallet loads from the production lines at a rate of more than one pallet every minute" said Mr McEntee.

High Productivity

In the wet goods warehouse, the rapid acceleration, deceleration and constant direction changes required to off-load and stack the completed pallets ready for shipment, makes high demands on the transmission on the Yale GLP20VX forklift trucks. The Techtronix transmission developed for the new Veracitor VX Series of lift trucks has transformed the way these engine powered counterbalance trucks are able to operate in intensive loading applications found at William Grant and Sons.

Auto Deceleration System (ADS) braking available with the Techtronix transmission, automatically slows the truck when the driver releases the throttle, for example, when the truck approaches the off-load conveyor to collect the loaded pallet. When combined with Auto Speed Hydraulics, Automatic Inching Control and Throttle Response Management, the result is intelligent forklift truck control, designed to maximise productivity by maintaining operating speed and response in a high productivity environment.

At the heart of the Veracitor VX Series is the Intellix Vehicle Management System (VSM)which acts as a master truck controller. CANbus technology helps to minimise wiring whilst providing instant communications to manage all the truck control systems. The Veracitor VX Series is described as having "intelligence ‘designed-in’ for better control and improved productivity".

Excellent Ergonomics

Yale understands that good ergonomic design also improves productivity. The intensive operations at William Grant place a high workload on the operators, who were keen to evaluate the operator module, seat and controls on the latest Veracitor VX Series.

Bill Harper, a line supervisor in the wet goods warehouse said: "The operators were used to the previous series of Yale trucks and after a short familiarisation session on the Yale GLP20VX forklift trucks, they appreciated the improved operator access, space and comfort levels on the new truck - the overall view being that the Yale Veracitor VX is very good."

To illustrate this, the step height on the Veracitor VX forklift truck truck is just 35 cm high, with 20% more floor space and increased shoulder clearance for the operator. Operator seat options include full suspension and swivel seats, specified by application type.

A further aid to operator comfort is the 3-point isolated drive-train, designed to reduce the noise and rolling vibration associated with truck operations. When coupled with Yale’s Continuous Stability Enhancement system (CSE), this advanced suspension system limits steer axle articulation, with smoother travel over rough surfaces.

Ease of Operation

Operator ergonomics are also improved within the driving compartment. The small steering wheel on the Veracitor VX can be easily changed from lock-to-lock with just 4 turns. The steering column is also infinitely adjustable for tilt to help achieve the best steering wheel height and reach to suit every driver.

Hydrostatic power steering is fitted as standard.

New E-hydraulic controls offered on the Veracitor VX Series include conventional cowl mounted hydraulic levers, or the option of Accutouch electro-hydraulic mini-levers, or the latest Palmtech joystick. All options share the same attention to ergonomic design, with a fully adjustable armrest incorporated into the Accutouch and Palmtech options.

ADS reduces braking effort by 50%

Frequent braking is a major source of muscle strain. Even moderate applications can see forklift truck brakes being applied more than 100 times per hour. Careful attention to brake pedal positioning, an extra wide pedal and braking effort reduced by 50%, all contribute to ease of operation. At the heart of this ergonomic breakthrough is the Auto Deceleration System (ADS) available with the Techtronix transmission.

ADS is the engine truck equivalent of regenerative braking on electric trucks. It automatically slows the truck when the driver releases the throttle pedal, by engaging the opposite direction selected clutch pack to reduce the travel speed of the truck which can be programmed to suit application and operator requirements.

William Grant’s Gerry McEntee said: "Our operators quickly adapted their driving style to the ADS braking system and welcomed the reduced braking effort required in completing unloading and stacking operations in our warehouse."

Truck availability

Forklift truck availability or ‘uptime’ is a crucial part of the overall lift truck fleet management programme at William Grant’s. "The loading teams work on a shift pattern where the lift trucks are an integral part of the handling and loading process. We have enough lift trucks to match our requirements but we are not ‘over-trucked’ and Yale is responsible for ensuring that we always have a serviceable fleet" said Gerry McEntee.

The man responsible for keeping the lift truck fleet serviceable is Yale UK’s George Mackay. Working from a well equipped workshop on the Bellshill site, George monitors the performance of the entire Yale materials handling fleet which includes 22 GLP20VX, 4 GLP30VX and 4 MP18 powered pallet trucks used in the dry goods store to deliver packaging materials to the bottling lines.

With so many LPG forklift trucks on site, managing and changing gas cylinders is an important part of maintaining high serviceability levels. To make this operation easier, Yale has introduced the EZ-Tank Drop-Down Bracket on the Yale GLP20-30VX Series, where the operator simply rotates the gas cylinder into a lower vertical position to remove and replace the cylinder without causing back strain.

Make mine a Yale

With the best selling Glenfiddich single malt whiskies taking between 12 and 30 years to mature, William Grant Distillers has to take a long-term view of its business. The enduring appeal and quality of its brands is reflected in its approach to handling and distribution, with palletised cases of spirits being shipped by trailer or container in a continuous process from the Bellshill site.

Creagh Concrete has taken delivery of the latest 7.0 Tonne capacity Yale Veracitor VX forklift trucks for handling pre-stressed and precast concrete products at its Newbridge plant near Edinburgh.

When handling 8 metre long concrete floor slabs weighing up to 4 tonnes each, the drivers operating the Yale Veracitor GDP70-VX counterbalance forklift trucks at Creagh Concrete know there is no room for error when loading the waiting trailers that will keep construction sites busy all over the UK.

Tough Application

Handling concrete products is one of the toughest applications for any forklift truck, as the abrasive dust can get everywhere. The designers of the Yale Veracitor VX 6 and 7 Tonne capacity forklift trucks know this only too well, which is why the latest Yale GDP/GLP60-70VX with a choice of diesel or LPG engines, is designed for the most intensive operations and demanding applications.

Recognised as one of the most productive forklift trucks in its class, the new Veracitor GDP/GLP60-70VX has power output increased to 74kW at 2200 rpm, increased gradeability and drawbar pull, with peak torque increased by 37%. The result of the faster acceleration, faster lift speeds and higher top speeds is greater productivity measured against the VDI cycle.

Operator Comfort is Key

Operator protection and comfort was an important consideration for Creagh Concrete when selecting the Yale Veracitor VX forklift trucks. The large left hand side grab handle on the overhead guard and the right hand grip on the seat mounting of the truck combined with the optimised step heights of 32 cm, 65cm and 84 cm, provide easy operator entry and exit. The operator floor height at 110cm gives operators good visibility over high loads and the rear counterweight.

Fingertip mini-lever hydraulic controls help to further minimise muscle and joint strain and reduce operator fatigue over long shifts, while the ultra-responsive small steering wheel – which requires only four turns from lock to lock – results in less shoulder stress for the operator. Manual levers are standard on the Veracitor VX Base model for operators who prefer this option.

Ideal for unstable or fragile loads

At the heart of the Yale GDP60-70VX is the Cummins QSB3.3 low emissions diesel engine with a choice of two transmissions. The Standard Electronic Powershift transmission provides operators with 2 forward and 2 reverse speeds. The ‘Soft Shift Power Reversal’ option is ideal for unstable or fragile load applications, whilst it also helps reduce tyre and brake wear. The optional Techtronix 332 provides 3 forward and 2 reverse speeds. Standard features of this enhanced transmission include Auto Deceleration System (ADS), Controlled Power Reversal (CPR) and Controlled Rollback.

The proven Intellix VSM electronic management system, delivers increased throughput and productivity and contributes to reducing maintenance costs. The system enables on-board and PC-based adjustment of the trucks performance characteristics to the application needs and carries out diagnostics of the trucks critical operating functions quickly and efficiently whilst maintaining maximum uptime.
