On this episode of the Yanks Abroad Podcast, host Christopher McCollum is joined by regular panelists Brian Sciaretta, John Kretlow and Jamie Hill in the first YA episode of 2013.

The first segment of the show is dedicated to England, with discussions on Stuart Holden's return to reserve team action with Bolton, Clint Dempsey's two-goal performance against Coventry and his statement that Tottenham can beat Manchester City in the standings. Next is a talk on Graham Zusi and Juan Agudelo trialing with West Ham, and how each would theoretically fit with the Hammers if a permanent move was made. The talk about England came to a sad conclusion with an update on Will Packwood's horrific leg injury.

The next segment of the show moves to Northern Europe, where transfer news is discussed regarding Conor O'Brien and Mix Diskerud, a potentially bad financial situation with Clarence Goodson that could lead to a transfer, and a brief set of opinions about Michael Parkhurst's move to Augsburg.

The talk then turns South of the Border where Herculez Gomez scored for Santos Laguna in the Clausura opener, four Americans featured in the Puebla vs. Tijuana game, and U.S. U-20 player Daniel Cuevas' potential rise to Santos' first team in the near future.

The show is concluded with a brief discussion on the National Team camp, with some surprising call-ups and some surprising snubs, followed by answering some questions from listeners.

The show is concluded with a discussion of Mikkel Diskerud's potential move to the Portland Timbers, and what that move would mean for him, the team, and the league.</itunes:summary>

On this episode of the Yanks Abroad Podcast, host Brian Sciaretta fills in for Christopher McCollum who took the night off after sparks started shooting out of his computer. Brian was joined by John Kretlow and Jamie Hill to discuss the usual array of topics ranging from club news to National Team news.

To start the show off, the panel was joined by special guest Cobi Span, of Djurgardens IF in Sweden. Span just completed his first professional season, where he played on the left wing for the mid-pack team. Span talks about his time in Sweden, and the move from the University of Virginia to a professional career for the first segment of the show.

During the second segment, the guys have a panel discussion on the upcoming opening of the winter transfer window, discussing Michael Parkhurst and Conor O'Brien's seemingly imminent moves, as their contracts with their current teams ended with their last games. In addition to these two players, there is also discussion around a host of other players including Bryan Gerzicich from Israel's reigning Champions, Ironi Kiryat Shmona.

The talk then moves to Adam Henley, as Brian discusses the hot news topic of the day. Henley received an invitation to the U.S. U-20 camp, and was reportedly considering the offer until Blackburn put a stop to the potential plans, needing him present to fulfill his duties as a starting defender. Considering Henley's potential and his dual national status, there will be a lot of eyes on the young Welsh American as he inches closer to deciding his international future.

The show is concluded with a discusion on the U-20 team and a look at some of the potential roster selections, as well as a brief gripe about Hertha Berlin's reluctance to let John Anthony Brooks join a camp.

In the return episode of the Yanks Abroad Podcast, host Christopher McCollum is joined by teammates Brian Sciaretta, Jamie Hill and Mathew Wagner to catch up on American soccer news from around the world.

The first segment of the show is dedicated to the epic comeback story of Bobby Wood who made his first career start for 1860 Munich after appearing to be done with soccer forever after a series of injuries took him out of duty and out of shape for a long period of time.

The second segment of the show was spent discussing another U-20 player in Germany who is eligible for the United States, Shawn Parker. The German-American forward was recently called into the German U-20 squad where he scored a goal, and he did the same thing for Mainz today. To go with his goal, he also picked up an assist. Jurgen Klinsmann has been in personal contact with Parker, but getting the young phenom to switch has been an elusive goal.

Following the talk of German-based talent, the conversation moved to England where Brad Guzan, Seb Hines and Clint Dempsey were the focus of conversation after good games from all three this week helped their teams out. After discussing Dempsey's game against West Ham, a random conversation came up comparing the Texan's competitiveness to Michael Bradley's competitiveness, where the conclusion seemed to be that Bradley was more competitive but Dempsey makes better faces.

To conclude the show, the panel moved across the Atlantic to Mexico to break down Tijuana's miracle comeback against Leon to advance to the finals of the Apertura against Toluca. The Tijuana conversation included the importance of the club to Southern California and its long term viability. Included in the Mexican segment is a brief discussion on Jose Torres' transfer from Pachuca to Tigres.

The show is concluded with a short talk about the upcoming MLS Cup, what the Galaxy means to MLS and American soccer, and what the future may look like with the team as some of the stars wink out.

The show is concluded with the customary Rapid Fire segment, answering questions from readers and listeners about Gatt, Johansson, wing depth and lineup replacements for the injured Landon Donovan and where Joe Gyau currently stands.

The opening half hour of the show is dedicated to National Team roster news, with opinions being tossed back and forth regarding Jozy Altidore and Alan Gordon, with segues into Fabian Johnson, Landon Donovan, Eddie Johnson and plenty of others. The most attention is granted to Altidore's absence from the roster, and the end conclusion is more or less agreed upon, though there were some key differences in opinion.

The show starts off with a rundown of scores from Europe and Mexico, with specific attention being paid to Jozy Altidore's hat trick performance over the weekend for AZ Alkmaar, as well as a look at Sacha Kljestan's UEFA Champions League game against AC Milan.

The topic of conversation veers to Denmark where Brian and Jamie discuss Iceland U-21 star and Danish SuperLiga leading scorer Aron Johannson, who recently told Brian that it would be hard to turn down an offer to play for the U.S. National Team if Jurgen Klinsmann came calling. The Alabama-born striker may be finding himself caught in a race between Iceland and the United States to cap tie him over the next year.

Afterwards, the immediate future of the U.S. National Team roster is discussed, with a look at Jose Torres and Maurice Edu, and whether or not their recent struggles are playing them out of contention for spots on the team.

The episode is wrapped up with a Rapid Fire question and answer segment where the panel took a range of questions from Central Defense depth to future U-20 stars.

On this episode of the Yanks Abroad Podcast, host Christopher McCollum is joined by the usual cast of characters in Brian Sciaretta, John Kretlow, and Mathew Wagner. The show is opened up with a discussion of mustaches, but quickly evolves into a soccer related topic as Brian leads a break down of the impending USA v. Mexico game at Estadio Azteca.

After the preview, a discussion of left and right flank options of attack goes on, as well as a brief debate on which player is currently missed more: Omar Gonzalez, or Stuart Holden.

Recaps from the week in Germany, Holland, Denmark, Mexico and Norway are then given, with special attention to Jozy Altidore's goals against Ajax.

To conclude the show, there is a discussion on upcoming interviews and articles, some injury news, and Brian McBride's debut for Wembley FC in the opening stages of the FA Cup.

<itunes:summary>On this episode of the Yanks Abroad Podcast, host Christopher McCollum is joined by regular panelists Brian Sciaretta, John Kretlow, Jamie Hill and Mathew Wagner.

For the first segment of the show, the gang is joined by Alex Smith of Wellington Phoenix, the lone American player in Australia's A-League. Alex answers questions about the growing soccer culture in Australia and New Zealand, his interest in the expanding Asian soccer market, and what it's like playing down under.

The next segment of the show features the first European action in awhile as Mathew breaks down happenings in Norway after their summer break, with the nearly unbelievable announcement that Stabaek has won two games in a row, after losing their previous nine. Afterwards, Brian gives a breakdown of Europa League and Champions League draws featuring Americans, with the games beginning next month.

The next segment sees the debut of the Yanks Abroad-themed MLS segment which will become a regular part of the show through the end of the MLS season, and the barrage of MLS information and opinion is led by John and Jamie, the resident MLS experts on the panel. A series of scores, news and player ratings follow along with the unvieling of the Stock Watch, a monthly segment that will track the progress of a group of American players expected to move overseas in the near future.

The show is included with a discussion on Brian McBride's move to Wembley FC for their upcoming FA Cup campaign, and then the talk turns briefly to Terrence Boyd and Rapid Vienna, Oswaldo Alonzo's internaitonal situation, and things are finally capped off with a dissection of an opinion on MLS and player development from legendary broadcaster Ty Keough, who Christopher recently interviewed for Yanks Abroad.</itunes:summary>

Former GolTV commentator and current beIN Sports personality Phil Schoen joined the panel as a special guest to discuss a variety of topics.

First on the agenda for the show was a discussion on the new Yanks Abroad website set to be released within the next couple of days, and then the conversation turned to goal line technology. A spirited debate between Brian and Phil is had, with no clear victor at the end. Up next was a discussion of Timothy Chandler and where Phil thinks he stands with Germany and the United States.

To finish off the conversation with Phil, talk turns to players he expects to see travel to Azteca to play Mexico, and who he sees coming out of MLS to join up with the National Team in the near future.

The show concludes with an update on the Glasgow Rangers situation, with the current word being that the old club is dead, and the new club may not even be accepted into the Scottish Football Association's ranks, let alone get back into the Premier League.

<itunes:summary>After taking Memorial Day weekend off, the show continued on for a special Tuesday night episode previewing the U.S.-Brazil game. Christopher McCollum us joined by regular panelists Brian Sciaretta, John Kretlow, Jamie Hill and Mathew Wagner, as well as special guest from the New York Times Goal Blog John Godfrey.

The show begins with an immediate recap of the game against Scotland, featuring some analysis but mostly opinion on the favorite players and moments of the game, and the various emotions that the result brought forth. Everyone named their Three Stars for the game, with overwhelming favorites being Landon Donovan and Michael Bradley for the top two spots.

The discussion then went briefly into news from Portugal, discussing Caleb Patterson-Sewell’s move from second division Atletico CP to Vitoria Setubal in the Portuguese Primeira Liga. From there, the conversation went north to Norway, talking about Josh Gatt and what he needs to do to get into the National Team, and then trying to make sure that Stabaek’s 4-1 victory over the weekend was not a typo.

The focus then turned to previewing the Brazil game, with a lot of discussion focused on Michael Bradley, whom John Godfrey likened to an M-80 firecracker due to his tendency to go from standing still to exploding. The nickname MB-80 was thus coined, and one-by-one opinions are given on what story lines on the American side and on the Brazilian side are most being looked forward to.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>In the first Special Edition episode of the Yanks Abroad Podcast, Christopher McCollum gathers together YA writers Brian Sciaretta and John Kretlow and YA stat manager Jamie Hill for a short-notice show to analyze Jurgen Klinsmann’s roster announcement. The roster, which was announced earlier in the day, was an immediate hot topic issue as several key players were left off, and Timmy Chandler announced that he wanted to take a break from international soccer.

The guys talk about this issue at length, discussing the possibility of Chandler posturing for a switch to Germany, to merely being uninterested in international play. The talk then moves to European and Mexico-based players who were seemingly inexplicably left off, until taking into consideration that several still have one more game left in their season and, and only two of the players called up played last week. Brian discusses the possibility that Klinsmann wanted to give the other players a few extra days off to recover from the gruelling season.

An analysis of the U.S. National Team defense and midfield pool takes place while debating the merits of Alfredo Morales and Jose Torres, which then turns into a theoretical question and answer session about Michael Parkhurst and Michael Orozco. How exactly it got to that point is a mystery, but it made sense once Brian revealed where he was going with it.

The show is concluded with a question and answer session with listeners, discussing Eric Lichaj, Gregg Berhalter, Morales, Chandler and other topics.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>In this episode of the Yanks Abroad Podcast, host Christopher McCollum is joined by usual panelists Brian Sciaretta, John Kretlow, and Mathew Wagner. The writers begin the show with the usual rundown of games from around the world over the past week, paying attention to the relegation battle that Bolton is facing, and Sacha Kljestan winning Belgium's Jupiler League with Anderlecht.

After the recaps and Player of the Week selections, this week's guest, Franco Panizo, is brought on. Franco covers the U.S. Men's National Team for Soccer By Ives, and the New York Red Bulls for MLSSoccer.com

With Franco on the air, the group discuss the possibilities of Jurgen Klinsmann's upcoming roster announcement, with predictions and questions raised, especially among the younger and more inexperienced players in the pool who may be left out in the cold after Klinsmann's remarks about wanting to field a team of regulars and veterans this summer.

Wrapping up the National Team, the discussion turns to the New York Red Bulls, with Franco providing information on Juan Agudelo's return from injury, Kenny Cooper benefiting from Thierry Henry, and whether or not Rafa Marquez is a distraction to the club. Franco suggests that another player may be a bigger distraction than Marquez, but for different reasons.

The show wraps up with an exploration of MLS players that the group thinks would do best by exploring their options overseas, either this summer or during the winter transfer window.

In this episode of the Yanks Abroad Podcast, Christopher McCollum is joined by fellow writers Brian Sciaretta, Jamie Hill and Mathew Wagner after taking off last week due to a combination of illnesses and vacations.

The hour long discussion is started off with global recaps from Mexico to Norway, featuring everywhere in between. The promotion and relegation battles are heating up in Europe while the playoffs are approaching in Mexico and underway in Belgium. The group discusses Bolton’s fight to stay in the Premier League, and Chris Pontius, Graham Zusi and C.J. Sapong’s chances of getting a National Team call up next month, which plays into Brian’s speculation on Jurgen Klinsmann’s roster selections for the upcoming friendlies. In the midst of this, the group pays homage to Brad Friedel, who made his 300th consecutive Premier League start for Tottenham.

Afterwards, the conversation moves to injury updates of Danny Williams, Jonathan Spector, Robbie Rogers, Robbie Findley, Josh Gatt, and Zak Whitbread while discussing return times and the importance of their injury to their clubs and country. Contract updates are discussed next, with Timothy Chandler’s extension at Nurnberg being the main subject, while also touching on Andrew Wooten who was named by one publication to the Bundesliga Team of the Week, and Zak Whitbread, who is believed by Jamie and Brian to be moving to a new team next season, possibly in the Championship.

The show is concluded with discussion on John Anthony Brooks’ future with Hertha Berlin, as he has been moving from the reserve team to the U-19 team. What this means in the big picture is speculated on by Jamie and brought the show to a close.

A new intro-buffer for the show is fawned over by the guys, before jumping immediately into Los Angeles-born Bryan Gerzicich and Kiryat Shmona clinching the Israeli League title and securing placement in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

This discussion is followed by global recaps of Mexico, England, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Scotland, Portugal and Italy, before naming their selections for Players and Games of the Week.

The guys then answer a variety of questions from readers and listeners, ranging from Clint Dempsey’s role at Arsenal if he is bought during the summer transfer window, to the legal problems that would come with a switch from American-born Japanese Youth National Team player Gotoku Sakai.

Brian provides a teaser into an upcoming article at Yanks Abroad about Danish midfielder Thomas Delaney who has American roots. A regular player for FC Copenhagen, Delaney has been voted the top Danish teenager, and already had UEFA Champions League group play experience by the age of 19. Now 20 years old, he may have a choice to make in the future...

The show is concluded with a lengthy examination of the United States National Team defender pool, who’s out, who’s in, and whether or not any of the plethora of defenders have a lock on the starting lineup this summer.</itunes:summary>

There is discussion of Jurgen Klinsmann and whether or not he’ll be a coach who has “his guys” that he sticks with through thick and thin, or if he will be more dynamic with his player choices coming this summer in the opening stages of World Cup Qualifying. This conversation is brought on by the group examining a couple of MLS results over the weekend, particularly the New England Revolution beating the Los Angeles Galaxy and Real Salt Lake’s last minute winner over the Portland Timbers. During the conversation, Jamie gives an update on Darlington Nagbe’s pursuit of American citizenship.

The show concludes with each of the guys naming their Players and Games of the Week.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>In this episode, the team finds themselves a bit short handed as several regulars are absent. Christopher McCollum teams up with YA editors and writers Brian Sciaretta and David Smith to give global recaps and hand out their inaugural Player and Game of the Week awards. In the midst of that segment, David gives a press box report on Saturday’s Bayern Munich-Hannover 96 game.

Afterwards, there is an in depth discussion of the U.S. U-23 team’s Olympic Qualification efforts, with Brian giving his press box assessment from Nashville. Brian gives his blunt opinion on the likelihood of qualification at this stage, and then the guys answer a listener’s question about whether or not Steve Cherundolo is the most under-rated player on the National Team.

The show is concluded with sound bites from Christopher’s recent interview with Herculez Gomez which will be the subject of an upcoming feature story at Yanks Abroad, and the final minutes are spent answering questions from listeners.</itunes:summary>
