From Kazusa Takashima, the creator of the popular Man's Best Friend, comes a devilish comedy of errors set in the most evil of places: high school!

Cause of My Teacher
In a cute, bittersweet school yard romance by boys love creators Temari Matsumoto, a student who is fond of eyeglasses finds that his teacher has something very special to teach him.

Exotic and Delicious Fate
When Miyashiro, the head of a well-established Japanese restaurant, is seduced by Haruhi, a chef-in-training visiting from a sister restaurant, the next day and every day after invites continuous sexual advances! The most frustrating thing is I can't discuss said sky falling while the issue of 'falling sky' is still pending. It will be resolved. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

I'm grateful a few people recalled we do not live under Napoleonic Code in the United States. For those who have already judged me, I'm not angry at you. I know it's easy to get into a sensationalist mentality when sensational accusations are being made. So many catastrophes have happened in the industry. It's easy to assume the worst right now. Please keep a cool head, and have faith. This situation is not going to end Yaoi Press. Don't believe the hype.

However, Yaoi Press survives on our convention income. A great portion of that income comes from those shows where I make personal guest appearances. You would think that if a show is willing to put the author of the Trach the Tentacle monster stories on their guest-list they aren't too concerned with her reputation. I can't help but think about a popular convention guest who had a false accusation lobbed at him last year. He was banned from the industry.

People panic when sensational stories start spreading. When convention chairs panic they could pull Yaoi Press from their shows.

I am in a position where I can't say much, and lack of information causes fear. I know there are some people who will never lose faith in me. But there are others who don't know me that well, and are concerned right now. You have my email. Please talk to me before making a decision that could cause a chain reaction that would be devastating to Yaoi Press.

If you've watched any television at all you know the drill for situations like this. I'm not allowed to discuss this matter while it's still pending. I'm desperate to talk, but I can't. Please try not to pass judgment until you know what's really going on. All is not what it seems.

I will be at OtakuMex this weekend. Yes, I really will! You can also meet me at the Hollywood Book Fair on October 4th. I'm seriously looking forward to Yaoi Con October 30th.

There are no cancellations. I will be at these shows. I should have panels at them all. People may ask me about this situation. I probably won't be able to answer them. I'm hoping for a fast resolution, but the sky started falling over 3 years ago, in 2006! If it's taken this long to drop I'm not hopeful about this being over with fast.

One good thing about Yaoi fans is that they are not ignorant people. They aren't the type to spit on me and say, "I heard X about you so I've decided Y." It didn't take long for supporters to start coming out. I appreciate everyone who continues to support me through this trying time.

In the meantime I have a business to continue managing during a very weak economy. I can't crawl into a turtle shell and hide. Works of over 100 talented creators rest on my shoulders. I must continue to promote them, and this company.

I hope that even if you doubt me you will not begrudge these creators the success of their Yaoi Press publications.

I say infamous because every online yaoi shop will know who I'm talking about. She's the girl who buys $400+ worth of books twice a month or so. She buys multiple copies of the same title showing that she's selling the books in her native Australia.

A convention vendor did a show in Australia to sell dojinshi. He did terrible. This made me think there may not be a market for yaoi in Australia. Well, of course that's not true. Japanese language dojinshi have to be more easily accessed by Australians than English language manga. The demand there is for the translated stuff. That demand is not being met.

Our distribution to Australia has always been poor. The transportation costs of the books just add too much to the cover price to make retailers feel it's worth stocking.

They're wrong.

I see from this Australian girl's cottage industry that even when she's buying yaoi at American retail prices, adding the cost of shipping, and adding a tidy mark-up above that, she's able to sell the books by the box full. I've seen some of her sales listings. She has no problem getting the equivalent of $30 USD for a copy of Crimson Spell.

Still, it's not an ideal situation. We know how tight budgets can get. In the USA fans don't have enough money to buy all the yaoi they want. Imagine how that is for Australian fans? They don't have their own yaoi manga publishers there. It's all imports from the USA.

Enter the Kindle. My Australian friend saw Digital Manga's Kindle web site. She emailed Maria at our store everythingyaoi.com and asked what the heck a Kindle was. Her next email told us she'd bought one.

Digital distribution is the answer for countries like Australia. Shipping and customs costs make import of niche manga just too expensive. The Kindle would be a Godsend. Take away the customs costs. Take away the shipping costs. Even get it at a discount over USA retail prices. There would finally be an alternative to online piracy for them.

I hope Australians reading this didn't stop at the paragraph above and run out to buy a Kindle. If you did you'll find that you have to hunt for a reseller who ships to Australia. Then, once you get a power adaptor to charge the thing in an Australian outlet, you'll find that you can't download the Kindle ebooks. There's a region block. Even if one of your USA buddies lets you use their address to register it you won't be able to download the Kindle ebooks in Australia.

1. Dear Amazon - Make the Kindle work 100% in Australia! That would be such a boon to Yaoi Press and other niche publishers who have insurmountable hurdles exporting books there. It's better for the environment and cheaper for all concerned.

2. Dear Australians, for now, don't buy a Kindle unless you use it strictly as a PDF ebook viewer. You won't be able to download the Kindle ebooks unless you do what our friend did.

What did our friend do? She mailed Maria her Kindle with a shopping list. Right now it consists of every book DMP has offered via the Kindle. She's also going to get several Yaoi Press Kindle books for free. Although we're not live on the Kindle yet we have submitted the first couple of titles as of last week.

All Yaoi Press books will be available on the Kindle before the end of the year.

Maria has turned over this Kindle to me to put the Yaoi Press titles on it. We told our friend that we would do this.

I know I should have my own Kindle since this is a new platform for our books. (I also know I should have my own iPhone since our books are going up on iTunes). But I don't want one. As a consumer I have almost no need for one. I'd rather spend $300 to pay an artist to draw something for Yaoi Press. 'Borrowing' a Kindle like this is a great opportunity. I want to see what our books look like on the Kindle screen (as well as our friend publisher's books).

I'm not certain of the legality of doing this favor for my friend. From my perspective I see Kindle being most useful outside the USA. I resent that there's blocks in place. Yaoi Press books have universal English rights (we make most of our titles from scratch). Other companies don't have world-wide rights, and need to assure their license partners that they aren't overstepping their boundaries. That said, no one seems to be licensing yaoi in Australia. It's silly when there are already English language versions of the books out there.

There should be a way for Australians to be able to access those books without the enormous costs they face right now.

I had several shows in fast succession starting with Anime Expo, then Otakon, then Anime Tucon.

Otakon was a great show, as usual. I regret not doing our Industry panel there. I know it's my fault for not making it happen. It's tough to keep track of every detail when there are so many shows in such a short time. I know a lot of people came by the booth saying the missed it this year. It was one of the few Yaoi Panels people under 18 could attend.

Anime Tucon stands out as one of the most fun conventions I've done in a long time. This was our first time in Tucson. I found the crowd was starved for Yaoi. I sold as many books to a show of 300 or so attendees as I usually sell at shows of 3,000.

The live yaoi shows caused a hysteria. People asked the participants to replay the scenes over and over, even to the point of being a nuisance. They really acted like they'd never seen two guys kiss before. Everyone was showing me the pictures and video they took of the scene with such amazement. They were asking me questions after, like if I ever set up shows like this before. They were trying to make the moment last as though it were a once in a lifetime thing. I remember that the reaction to the Live Yaoi Shows in Phoenix were more extreme than in other places, but Tucson really went nuts for them.

And for me also. I was attacked with unwelcome glomps several times when walking to my hotel room or the bathroom. New friend Warky (singer/songwriter/MC and fellow guest) jokingly commented that he needed to be my body guard when we were walking together. I took him up on this. As many people know I'm not comfortable hugging strangers. I do 'aura-hugs' so the kids at shows don't feel like I'm rejecting them. I've had shows were one or two people attack me with a hug without asking first. I never had to fight off as much love as at this show.

I know it's well-meaning. I don't mean for my boundaries to offend friendly kids. At the first show Yaoi Press did (PMX in California, 2005) I hugged a sweaty, grimey fan who passed their BO onto me for the rest of the day. I was throwing up in my mouth the rest of the day. I think it traumatized me about hugging strangers from then on. It made hugging people I don't know feel icky. When I hug a friend I get a warm feeling and I want to hold on. If I'm not there with a person yet I don't want to get that intimate. I hope people will understand.

I used to claim I was a germaphobe to avoid hugs, but I knew I couldn't get away with that at this show where I'm so close to the staff. I did a 'live yuri show' with con-chair AT on stage at closing ceremonies. I love her dearly!

Anime Tucon was the first show where I didn't hole up in my hotel room when I wasn't at a scheduled event. I played Mahjong with 3 new friends in the artist alley lobby area until it was time to do my Yaoi Hentaipalooza panel. This wasn't Mahjong solitaire like most people play on their computers. We played American-style 4 player mahjong. It was easy to learn and lots of fun. It was good research for the custom yaoi mahjong sets we'll be coming out with toward the end of the year.

There were many wonderful moments at this show. I'm so glad I came out. I'm looking forward to Otakumex, which is put on by the same group. Moreso than in prior years, it seemed. Having an endcap island in the dealer's room helped our visibility tremendously. We plan on exhibiting this way from now on.

There's so much to touch on. Here it is in list format:

* Yaoi Prose was announced! Our new illustrated ebook imprint was the big news at our Saturday morning panel. We're starting off with a Saihoshi continuation written and illustrated by the amazing Studio Kosen (teaser: Yinn fans will be pleased). The launch will also feature Winter Demon stories written by Yamila Abraham (me) and illustrated by a yet to be named top Yaoi Press artist. The tentative live date is the end of this year. Follow the Yaoi Press and Yaoi Prose Twitters for the fastest updates.

* Our first meeting with a production company was at the show (Valhalla Motion Pictures). We hope to move more towards film and other media, but the gay content does make our properties a tough sell to Hollywood. Here's hoping something pans out!

* Our exhibit was directly across from Media Blaster's. We flung the yaoi stress relief corns back and forth to each other. :D Yaoi fans occasionally intercepted.

* Dru Pagliassotti, professor, yaoi scholar, writer, and my editor for an upcoming nonfiction book on Boys Love I'm contributing to, was wrangled into working at our madhouse of a booth on Thursday. I can't imagine what she thought of Happy Yaoi Yum Yum. I did warn her!

* Winter Demon Cosplayers manned the booth Thursday and Saturday. I love them so dearly! Great staff = Show success. Sam, Carleena, Alison, Kailah – Fantastic work!

* 75 Copies of Happy Yaoi Yum Yum sold at the show!!! This is our all time record of sales for a single title at a convention. ;_; Everyone seemed to love it. Many happy fans came back to the booth with kudos.

* Much business discussed with Manager-san Mikako Ogata of Aurora Publishing. She was adorable in her schoolgirl cosplay! Our two companies have so much in common. Got to meet Elisa as well, who I pester at Aurora so very often. ~~; I feel great about collaborating with Aurora in the future.

* I sat at the Netcomics booth quite a while meeting with my very good friend, Vice President Soyoung Jung. Netcomics continues to be our digital distribution provider, and we agree the past two years have been a great success. We talked about other things though. I love that Netcomics USA is stronger than ever despite the bad economy. This is thanks to Soyoung. We compared notes on how little we sleep and how many hours we work. She has my workaholic record beat!

* My friends at Digital Manga Publishing gave me a lovely gift. A bottle of wine in a cloth sack. That was so nice of them! ;_; Sasahara-sensei himself carried the box of books I bought from them back to our booth. We walked and talked briefly. Anime Expo was a great chance to strengthen our friendship with this pillar of yaoi publishing. They've helped us so much over the years. ;_;

* I was also glad to meet with Rightstuf for a bit. They're moving cartloads of our books on their site. We will be expanding into our non-book merchandise with them, and may even do an exclusive item. :) I’m very happy that they're releasing more BL anime soon!

* Friday we had Dark Prince cosplayers! King Jereth and "Queen" Moors. It's funny to have a girl playing a guy dressed like a girl. :D They were amazing. These cosplayers were fans of the books I'd befriended last year. They surprised me with the Jereth and Moors costumes. I didn't make them cosplay my books—honest!

• Shoplifter boobytraps were one of our best ideas for the show. Nothing funnier than seeing a thief foiled and running away in terror. Next year we'll try to set up a video camera to catch some YouTube clips. Anime Expo is sadly the very worst show for shoplifting. All the dealers are on high alert. We were supported by plain-clothes security this year.

All in all a fantastic show for us. One of the very best we've ever done! I'm so glad I got all the networking I needed done here since we were too late to get exhibit space at San Diego Comic Con. AX was all about business this year. That suited me perfectly!

The coloring book that Docucopies chose not to print was handled by a local Las Vegas printer. It sold very well at Anime Expo last weekend.

I'm glad that Docucopies decided to clarify their position on what they will or will not print in this blog post. However, I take issue with this reply they placed in their comments:

"Regardless of when the term "disturbing" was first used, it should be clear that the woman who used it felt that way before it was divulged that all characters were male, otherwise she would not have raised issue with the job in the first place."

This is not true. Lynn called the pictures disturbing after I told her they were all male. I posted our email exchange in the order it happened in the May 27th entry about this.

There's some misuse of terms going on. Slander is untrue spoken statements that harms the reputation of a person or business. When these statements are in written form (such as comments to a blog post) it's called libel. Harmful statements are only slander or libel when they are untrue.

We'd used Docucopies for printing. They are a photocopy company, not a comic printer, but provided a very economic solution for us.

We were happy with the doujinshi we'd published with them, so we proceeded with our next small run project, a yaoi coloring book. This morning they sent this email:

"Because of the nudity of this file we are unable to print this for you. The order before this one should not have been printed but did slide by without us looking through the entire book."

It doesn't pay for us to throw tantrums over things like this. However, I feel they've made a mistake. The coloring book is 16+. There are side views of nude characters, but naughty bits are not visible. There are no sex scenes, but some images are suggestive that sex is coming. It didn't even cross my mind that a printer might not agree to print it. I called and told them that the characters are all male. I think they might think the characters are female and we're showing bare breasts.

At any rate, here are what I see as the most 'extreme' images of the coloring book we sent them:

Update: This is the email I sent Docucopies:

Hello Lynn,

"I just wanted to follow up on the phone call. As I said, we formatted the coloring book with margins, even on the cover, so it could be printed by Docucopies and we could save money on it. At this point it would cost more money than the book is worth to reformat it for another printer. The coloring book would of course look better with full bleeds. We formatted it without them specifically so they could be printed with you.

It doesn't matter which pictures are inside the coloring book. We have hundreds to choose from. If you tell me which pictures are going too far I can swap them out for new ones. Please remember that the characters depicted are all male. They look pretty because this is a genre from Japan that's targeting female readers.

If I had been put on notice with the last comic book I sent you guys I would have known better than to keep sending projects like this your way."

Their response:

"Hi Yamila -
There are a number of page that I find disturbing and do not want to put our employees in the same position printing this book for you. Some of the pages are 5, 6, 23, 24, 28, 29. I am sorry but we will not print this book.
Lynn
Docucopies"

I'm extremely annoyed now. They don't want to work with me, even when I explained what a bad position they're putting us in. There is nothing in their TOS that says they won't accept risque material.

But what really makes me angry is this:

This is page 23 one of the images they found "disturbing." If you were me, what would you think?

I'm disgusted with you Docucopies.

We'll also stick it on this page so it can
be part of the comic strip's permanent archive.

Are you ready to claim your yaoi booty? Heh...I'm
referring to the prizes, of course.

That's great! But don't send your image to me. I'm just
a sexually suggestive banana. You're going to want to
e-mail your comic strip to:

contest@everythingyaoi.com

By Participating in the Contest,

You agree to be Bound by the Following Rules:

1. You must be 18 or older, or have reached
the minimum age which is considered adult in your country
to enter. Prizes will be sent
via UPS 'ADULT SIGNATURE REQUIRED' service.
An adult must show government issued photo ID to receive
the package. Sorry, kids! We don't make the laws!
If we send pornography to a minor we'll go to jail.
;_;

2. The deadline for entries is June 22nd,
2009, 12:00am Pacific Standard Time.

3. Save your entry as a JPG. We prefer
that you save it somewhere online and send us a link
to it (it may help your chances of winning *wink*) but
we will also accept e-mail attachments. This is only
because we know that if we ask people not to send e-mail
attachments they will anyway. :p

4. Tell us the name you want to be credited
by if your comic strip wins. If you forget we're going
to use the beginning part of your e-mail address.

5. An autoreply e-mail is the only confirmation
you'll get that we've received your entry.

6. All entries become property of Yaoi
Press LLC to do with as we please. This is valid for
all eternity throughout the entire universe. This includes,
but is not limited to, displaying the runner-up entries
online.

7. Void where prohibited by law. Make
sure you can't get in trouble receiving porn in the
mail before you enter. If customs or your dad seizes
your prize we aren't going to send you a replacement.

8. The winner will be announced on June
24th, 2009 on the Yaoi Press blog.
They will also be notified via e-mail They will have
30 days to claim their prizes, or they forfeit it.

9. The judges decisions are final, even
if they're unfair and discriminatory. The winner will
be contacted via the same e-mail address they used to
enter the contest. If that e-mail doesn't work anymore
they lose, and we'll rub it in by publicly announcing
that they lost due to a stupid technicality.

10. The droplet coming from the banana
is nectar. If you thought any different you're a damned
pervert.

We're four days behind schedule right now, and anticipate this delay continuing until at least May 19th. We're very lucky to have a printer who makes us a priority when they get our files in. There's nothing they can do until those files get sent, however. We're hoping to ship in early June.

I wasn't as concerned about this as usual because I thought we'd lost our two most time-sensitive orders. These are comic shops and Borders. Borders isn't ordering much from any publisher these days, but we never even marketed HYYY to them due to the extreme content. It's no surprise that they aren't carrying this one.

Comic shops are a different animal. We had a respectable number of orders, but new higher minimums were imposed by our distributor. A month after the orders were first showing up on our vendor inventory report they disappeared. I assumed this was due to their new policy.

Without comic shops or Borders we've lost most of the 'Where the Hell is my book?' factor that leads to canceled orders. People preorder books at comic shops and to a lesser degree, Borders. With Borders you have many stores prominently displaying a list of what graphic novels are 'coming soon' with the release dates. I've seen this as a whiteboard sign behind the info desk at one Borders. It was a black changeable letter sign on the wall at another location. Customers see that _______ title is arriving on _____ date and show up on that date to pick up a copy. When the book doesn't arrive on time they're annoyed. They blame Borders. They order it on Amazon instead. Borders cancels orders by the hundreds. A few of the more autonomous branches never order from the late publisher again. (A Borders vending at a Florida anime con told me this).

Borders is out of the picture for HYYY. Comic shops suddenly aren't. A few days ago I saw that our comic shop (aka direct market) orders had magically reappeared. ~~; Argh. I mean...hooray.

We are overwhelmed by adoring fans and supporters. We always have great sales at our booths. The industry panel I put on annually gets crammed with hundreds of fans, and highlights end up on Youtube. The staff person in charge admitted she didn't care for yaoi, but still loved the riotous panel.

With all the good this show does for our business I hate to complain about anything. However, one thing that happens year after year is that I hear from fans who never got to meet me (Yamila) because they didn't know I was there. They didn't know I was at the Yaoi Press booth. They missed the opportunity to get their books autographed. They missed a chance to do a portfolio review with me.

I've asked to be put on the guest list in 2008 and again this year. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Otakon is going to do this. There's no hard feelings on my end. I understand shows have different reasons for the decisions they make. I'm extremely grateful when shows like Anime Central, Anime Expo, Anime North, and so forth, choose to have me as a guest. It would be nice to see this at Otakon since it is the 'Yaoi Con of the East.' I will still continue to support and adore this show despite this decision by them.

I will not be attending Otakon in person this year. There will not be a Yaoi Press industry panel. It's a very busy convention season for me. Once a show puts me on the guest list I know I've got to be there. With Otakon I'm going to take the opportunity for what will probably be a much needed break. Staffers Amanda and Jaime will be there to run the Yaoi Press booth in the dealers room. I'm sure it will still be a great show for Yaoi Press in 2009!

Rhea is the artist of Winter Demon 4 (among other titles) as well as a professional model and spokeswoman. She has that lovely Winter Demon Doujin to autograph for you. I will be there also (Yamila Abraham) to put on a great yaoi program for the fans, and sign Dark Prince and Winter Demon graphic novels. It was an intimate and friendly crowd. I got a lot of quality time with my buddy/fellow guest Jan Frasier. It's amazing to me that they were able to pull off such a good show even when they lost their venue just days before the weekend. Kudos to them!

I want to say to my Vegas pals, even if you were wary this year I hope you'll give them a chance next year. Las Vegas had an anime show scam them in 2007, so there was much suspicion for this new show. Now that they've proven themselves legitimate it's time for Vegas to embrace this new annual anime event. They need more locals to get involved. Even if you were one of the naysayers this year please try to shrug it off. They're not holding grudges. The con chair and vice chair are about as sweet and cuddly as you can get. They love anime. You love anime. Please give this show a chance in 2010.

They stored our boxes in a storage unit and it flooded. I asked how much could be salvaged for the show. I was told it the books are 'mush.'

This is extremely devastating to our business which relies heavily on convention revenues. There aren't funds available to replace all our ACEN merchandise. I am starting the long climb towards this goal by putting for sale the last five Kosen Yaoi decks. On Monday I will consider other sales. For now I must focus on the Animeland Vegas convention this weekend.

Please let others know about this auction:

Yaoi Poker Decks

Here is what the Chair says:

"It would seem that they [Alexis Park] found the loophole and exploited a miscommunication on both our parts that allowed them to sell our space to the bigger group that will be spending more money than we were. While I don't like it and want nothing more than to stomp my foot and cry "it's not fair", I UNDERSTAND it. Business is business, and in this economy you get every dime you can get when you can get it. I wish them the best of luck...cuz kharma is funny, and I want my kharma bases covered."

I have tremendous empathy for this group to have to deal with a venue move just days before the show. I was a guest at two other shows the Animeland staff put on: Otakumex and Anime Wasabi. They are a group of well-meaning fans dedicated to putting on fun shows. This was an unavoidable change.

A member of the Animeland staff will be at the Alexis Park hotel to make sure everyone is redirected to the new venue. It's very near to the old venue.

We have signed an agreement with Fika Publishing for distribution through the ITunes ap store.

Yaoi Press aps will sell for $.99 and will be available to IPhones worldwide. Young adult titles will be presented in their entirety. Mature readers titles will be modified as little as possible to adhere to ITune's content policies.

A 120 page manga is turned into a 500+ page ap for the IPhone. Each page is one or two panels so there isn't the need for excessive scrolling.

We expect to have the first five aps launched by August of this year. We've chosen to debut with Zesty Vol. 1, Zesty Vol. 2, Surge, Treasure Vol. 1, and Treasure Vol. 2.

They don't have to follow it by rote, but we do expect to be able to directly edit their work in Photoshop. I've put up the instructions we give our letterers on Ehow:

http://www.ehow.com/how_4888435_comic-book-manga-adobe-photoshop.html

Some of our letterers don't like using the shape tool to make balloons. They prefer the hand-drawn balloon look that you see in most manga. I come from the comic book lettering side of things where stencils were used to make perfectly round balloons before digital lettering took over. You see a lot of perfectly round balloons and perfect triangle balloon tails in our books. These instructions are where that comes from.

Some letterers want to use other software for lettering besides Photoshop. I wish we could be flexible, but there's a lot of people who get their hands on the lettered work before it goes to press. You have a copy editor who needs to fix typos, an author who may want to edit her digital galleys, and possibly even me doing that last once over. The program we most have in common is Photoshop. If we get files that can't be edited in Photoshop it means a lot more back and forth. All of our production staff work remotely. If we need a letterer to go back and do edits it means waiting for her to see the email, then edit and upload the page. Then the next person on the line could have other edits to the page and we start all over again. By having the page be editable right on the spot it lets us just get on with it.

It's an incentive on everythingyaoi.com right now. It's very likely we're going to run out before the April 10th deadline.

The promotion on everythingyaoi.com is where we're giving 9 different cards each month to total one full deck in 6 months. At Anime Wasabi last weekend one of my buddies in the industry came by asking about the decks. His customers were asking him about them. They didn't want to go along with the 6 month incentive thing. I traded him some decks for some merchandise. He said he's going to give them to some of their best customers. Loyalty has its perks. :)

At this point in time I don't want to devalue KOSEN's work by coming out with all sorts of different poker decks. However I do want to put out more cards. The card medium is perfect for small, beautiful works of art.

Trading cards can be used for all sorts of different things. I'd love to hear suggestions from fans about what type of yaoified deck they'd like to see next.
