Want to knit that new pattern? Don’t want to buy new yarn? Want new yarn but the LYS doesn’t carry the same one? Ever knit a pattern in a different yarn than called for and have a drastically different end result? Never fear. Different fibers react and perform, well, differently. In this class get hands on the same stitches in different fibers and learn how they drastically change the finished product. Swatches will be passed around and explained. Also learn to swatch the proper way. We all know swatches lie, but there are ways of getting them to be more truthful… it is all in how you treat them. This class will be mostly lecture, touch and feel, but hands of swatching will highly encouraged during class.

Ready to try toe-up socks? They’re not as hard as they seem! We’ll learn the tricks & secrets to toe-up construction and you get you started on a pair of socks.

Required skills: Cast on, cast off, knit, purl, knitting in the round, increasing and decreasing, basic cuff-down sock construction techniques.
Materials: Two 16 inch circular needles or one 36 inch (or longer) circular needle in the size appropriate for your yarn, 420 yds of sock/fingering weight yarn, tapestry needle, scissors & stitch markers. Patterns & handouts will be supplied. Taught in 2 parts.

Crochet Block of the Month – 03-04-10

A year long monthly series of discovery learning different crochet patterns, and how to join them into an afghan. You’ll create a crocheted square featuring a pattern covering various techniques including: fans & shells, laces, waves & ripples, angled & geometric, crossed & spiked, post stitches, bobbles, popcorns and puffs. After you’ve created all the blocks, we’ll cover borders, joinery and blocking. After that, we’ll have a year end “afghan reveal party” to show off all your hard work!

Materials: Hook sizes H, one skein of any solid colored, smooth, worsted weight yarn.
Required skills: Proficiency in advanced beginner crochet skills (chain st, single, double, and treble crochet sts, slip st, making and crocheting into a ring, increasing, decreasing, reading a basic pattern).
Cost: $15 a session.
