क्या कभी बताया उसने की भर पेट निवाला खाया उसने

रोजमर्रा की जिंदगी से

क्या कभी सच बोलेंगे

Before studying the parallels between modern physics and Eastern mysticism, we have to deal with the question of how we can make any comparison at all between an exact science, expressed in the highly sophisticated language of modern mathematics, and spiritual disciplines which are mainly based on meditation and insist on the fact that their insights cannot be communicated verbally.

What we want to compare are the statements made by scientists and Eastern mystics about their knowledge of the world. To establish the proper framework for this comparison, we must firstly ask ourselves what kind of 'knowledge' we are talking about; does the Buddhist monk from Angkor Wat or Kyoto mean the same thing by 'knowledge' as the physicist from Oxford or Berkeley? Secondly, what kind of statements are we going to compare? What are we going to select from the experimental data, equations and theories on the one side, and from the religious scriptures, ancient myths, or philosophical treatises on the other? This chapter is intended to clarify these two points: the nature of the knowledge involved and the language in which this knowledge is expressed.

Throughout history, it has been recognized that the human mind is capable of two kinds of knowledge, or two modes of consciousness, which have often been termed the rational and the intuitive, and have traditionally been associated with science and religion, respectively. In the West, the intuitive, religious type of knowledge is often devalued in favour of rational, scientific knowledge, whereas the traditional Eastern attitude is in general just the opposite. The following statements about knowledge by two great minds of the West and the East typify the two positions. Socrates in Greece made the famous statement 'I know that I know nothing', and Lao Tzu in China said, 'Not knowing that one knows is best.' In the East, the values attributed to the two kinds of knowledge are often already apparent from the names given to them. The Upanishads, for example, speak about a higher and a lower knowledge and associate the lower knowledge with various sciences, the higher with religious awareness. Buddhists talk about 'relative' and 'absolute' knowledge, or about 'conditional truth' and 'transcendental truth'. Chinese philosophy, on the other hand, has always emphasized the complementary nature of the intuitive and the rational and has represented them by the archetypal pair yin and yang which form the basis of Chinese thought. Accordingly, two complementary philosophical traditions—Taoism and Confucianism—have developed in ancient China to deal with the two kinds of knowledge.

Rational knowledge is derived from the experience we have with objects and events in our everyday environment. It belongs to the realm of the intellect whose function it is to discriminate, divide, compare, measure and categorize. In this way, a world of intellectual distinctions is created; of opposites which can only exist in relation to each other, which is why Buddhists call this type of knowledge 'relative'.

Abstraction is a crucial feature of this knowledge, because in order to compare and to classify the immense variety of shapes, structures and phenomena around us we cannot take all their features into account, but have to select a few significant ones. Thus we construct an intellectual map of reality in which things are reduced to their general outlines. Rational knowledge is thus a system of abstract concepts and symbols, characterized by the linear, sequential structure which is typical of our thinking and speaking. In most languages this linear structure is made explicit by the use of alphabets which serve to communicate experience and thought in long lines of letters.

The natural world, on the other hand, is one of infinite varieties and complexities, a multidimensional world which contains no straight lines or completely regular shapes, where things do not happen in sequences, but all together; a world where—as modern physics tells us—even empty space is curved. It is clear that our abstract system of conceptual thinking can never describe or understand this reality completely. In thinking about the world we are faced with the same kind of problem as the cartographer who tries to cover the curved face of the Earth with a sequence of plane maps. We can only expect an approximate representation of reality from such a procedure, and all rational knowledge is therefore necessarily limited.

The realm of rational knowledge is, of course, the realm of science which measures and quantifies, classifies and analyses. The limitations of any knowledge obtained by these methods have become increasingly apparent in modern science, and in particular in modern physics which has taught us, in the words of Werner Heisenberg, 'that every word or concept, clear as it may seem to be, has only a limited range of applicability.'

For most of us it is very difficult to be constantly aware of the limitations and of the relativity of conceptual knowledge. Because our representation of reality is so much easier to grasp than reality itself, we tend to confuse the two and to take our concepts and symbols for reality. It is one of the main aims of Eastern mysticism to rid us of this confusion. Zen Buddhists say that a finger is needed to point at the moon, but that we should not trouble ourselves with the finger once the moon is recognized; the Taoist sage Chuang Tzu wrote:

Fishing baskets are employed to catch fish; but when the fish are got, the men forget the baskets; snares are employed to catch hares; but when the hares are got, men forget the snares. Words are employed to convey ideas; but when the ideas are grasped, men forget the words.

In the West, the semanticist Alfred Korzybski made exactly the same point with his powerful slogan, 'The map is not the territory.'

What the Eastern mystics are concerned with is a direct experience of reality which transcends not only intellectual thinking but also sensory perception. In the words of the Upanishads,

What is soundless, touchless, formless, imperishable,
Likewise tasteless, constant, odourless,
Without beginning, without end, higher than the great, stable—
By discerning That, one is liberated from the mouth of death.

Knowledge which comes from such an experience is called 'absolute knowledge' by Buddhists because it does not rely on the discriminations, abstractions and classifications of the intellect which, as we have seen, are always relative and approximate. It is, so we are told by Buddhists, the direct experience of undifferentiated, undivided, indeterminate 'such-ness'. Complete apprehension of this suchness is not only the core of Eastern mysticism, but is the central characteristic of all mystical experience.

The Eastern mystics repeatedly insist on the fact that the ultimate reality can never be an object of reasoning or of demonstrable knowledge. It can never be adequately described by words, because it lies beyond the realms of the senses and of the intellect from which our words and concepts are derived. The Upanishads say about it:

There the eye goes not,
Speech goes not, nor the mind.
We know not, we understand not
How one would teach it.

Lao Tzu, who calls this reality the Tao, states the same fact in the opening line of the Tao Te Ching: 'The Tao that can be expressed is not the eternal Tao.' The fact—obvious from any reading of the newspapers—that humanity has not become much wiser over the past two thousand years, in spite of a prodigious increase in rational knowledge, is ample evidence of the impossibility of communicating absolute knowledge by words. As Chuang Tzu said, 'If it could be talked about, everybody would have told their brother.'

Absolute knowledge is thus an entirely non-intellectual experience of reality, an experience arising in a non-ordinary state of consciousness which may be called a 'meditative' or mystical state. That such a state exists has not only been testified by numerous mystics in the East and West but is also indicated by psychological research. In the words of William James:

Our normal waking consciousness, rational consciousness as we call it, is but one special type of consciousness, whilst all about it, parted from it by the filmiest of screens, there lie potential forms of consciousness entirely different.

Although physicists are mainly concerned with rational knowledge and mystics with intuitive knowledge, both types of knowledge occur in both fields. This becomes apparent when we examine how knowledge is obtained and how it is expressed, both in physics and Eastern mysticism.

On 8th august 2012

The Buzz world today is “Mission Curiosity” which realistically presents great hope for life over the dream destination of Mars in search of water and life hence ushering a new dawn for career in space spearheaded by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in order to make our planet a better. Really one soars in skies of hope and imagination with dramatic touch of Curiosity rover on the red planet.

When my imagination was having lofty dreams of future suddenly I got an automated call from BSNL asking me to clear my dues or my phone will stop working from 1^st of May onwards. I got baffled not because of reminder but the deadline of 1^st May as it was already 8^th august when whole world was celebrating this great event with lots of hope and curiosity.

My imagination soared down to more realistic world about humane approach towards the technology,users and impact in India.How we Indians have made a mess out of it.Flashback brings forth the hopes associated with the promises and fears which ultimately rippled from these empty promises.

Roadmap of the every new project unveiled since independence signals great hopes and acts as precursor towards alleviating majority of India’s existing predicaments vis-a-vis creating hope for a better tomorrow. Still 65 years after independence lot of questions keep on haunting from the midnight of 15^th august 1947, when we made a Tryst With

Destiny.Does promise made with destiny stands redeemed? Does the soul of the nation, long suppressed found its vocal chord in this modern advancement? If ‘Yes’ then poverty, ignorance, disease and inequality of opportunity among millions of Indians should have ended. If ‘No’ then this is not the India dreamt by Architects of this great nation.

Intricacies of situation necessitate studying the problem from wider perspective. Has technical development gone awry OR True humane effort which stems from true nationality and integrity stands missing? Judging the present day scenario it seems our value system has gone corrupted and politics of opportunism and favouritism stands amid redeeming our pledge.This ethos presents a great threat to nation in wake of newer and sophisticated weapons of warfare from chemical to biological to cyber available with mankind at click of button. Uncertainty grips the nerves when counterfeit advancements made assuring to resolve existing wows of poverty, hunger, Illiteracy and mal-nutrition still widens the gap between haves and have nots. The day NASA is exuberant over completion of its ambitious mission curiosity, the ambit of problems India still face depicts pictures of a failed democratic set up which has lost its credibility.

This socio,political and economic hotch potch and our bucket crabs approach combined with apathy of Executive Head of State “We don’t have magic wand” and major social and political movements of creating awareness among citizens getting discounted towards so called lousy advancement has left the rift even wider between opulent and poor.Excuses of ‘fallibility of human nature’ and ‘To Err is humane’ by people in power from Grids Failure to criminality to corruption to legitimacy or illegitimacy of government leaves homo sapiens of India with no other choice but to wait and watch for the outcome of this mission set forth by our fore fathers.Keeping Fingers Crossed.

मुसाफिर क्यों पड़ा सोता

Moses heard a shepherd on the road praying:

“Lord, where are you? I want to help you, to fix your shoes and comb your hair. I want to wash your clothes and pick the lice off.

“I want to bring you milk to kiss your little hands and feet when it’s time for you to go to bed.

“I want to sweep your room and keep it neat. God, my sheep and goats are yours. ”

“Who are you talking to?” Moses could stand it no longer.

The shepherd repented and tore his clothes and sighed and wandered out into the desert.

A sudden revelation came then to Moses.

If I had my life to live over, I would try to make more mistakes

I would relax. I know of very few things that I would take seriously.
I would go more places. I would climb more mountains and swim more rivers.
I would eat more ice cream and less bran.
I would have more actual troubles and fewer imaginary troubles.
You see, I have been one of those fellows who live prudently and sanely, hour after hour, day after day.
Oh, I have had my moments. But if I had it to do over again, I would have more of them – a lot more.
I never go anywhere without a thermometer, a gargle, a raincoat and a parachute.
If I had it to do over, I would travel lighter.
If I had my life to live over, I would pay less attention to people telling us we must learn Latin or

History; otherwise we will be disgraced and ruined and flunked and failed.
I would seek out more teachers who inspire relaxation and fun.
If I had my life to live over, I would start barefooted a little earlier in the spring and stay that way a little later in the fall.
I would shoot more paper wads at my teachers.
I would keep later hours.
I’d have more sweethearts.
I would go to more circuses.
I would be carefree as long as I could, or at least until I got some care- instead of having my cares in advance.
I doubt, however, that I’ll do much damage with my creed.
The opposition is too strong.
There are too many serious people trying to get everybody else to be too darned serious.

Isis (Egypt)
Not only was she a principal deity in the rites connected with the dead, but she was also a magical healer, and as a mother figure and arbiter of fertility rites, she was a role model for women. Isis was the daughter of the earth god Geb and the sky goddess Nut and was married to Osiris, King of Egypt, whom she restored as a mummy after his brother Seth threw him in the Nile and then chopped him into pieces.

Artemis (Greece)
Daughter of Zeus and Leto and the twin sister of Apollo, the sun god. Most commonly thought of as the goddess of the hunt, she is often depicted with a quiver full of arrows, and accompanied by a deer or a bear. However, Artemis could also refer to a number of other deities, depending on the time period or the region — and many of them had a more nurturing role.

Frigga (Scandinavia)
Wife of Odin, associated with the hearth, the mead hall and childbirth. But while that seems a boring portfolio, it’s an important one given the violence and instability of Scandinavia in the dark ages. Frigga is also remembered in the context of her spinning wheel, twining the threads of fate that tie all humanity.

Durga (India)
Durga (“the inaccessible”) is considered the mother of the universe. It’s only right that such a powerful deity have at least eight arms, ride a lion, and be able to defeat demons that other gods cannot. It’s also fitting that the beautiful protective-warrior goddess have a festival in her honor each year.

Nu Gua (China)
Nu Gua established the norms for marriage and developed the rules of conduct between the sexes. But she did much more than that. Pillars of heaven need refurbishing? fixed them. Corners of the earth broken? Nu Gua brought her tool kit of a tortoise and melted-down stones.

Gaia (Greece)
Hesiod writes in his Theogony that she showed up after, but is not the child of, Chaos. “Broad-bosomed Earth (Gaia), sure-standing place for all / The Gods who live on snowy Olympus’ peak” creates the sky, the mountains, and the sea. That sky (Uranus), “an equal to herself,” is not just her offspring; he also becomes her husband.

Danu (Ireland)
Mother of the earth, the gods, fertility, wisdom, wind and of all the Celtic people. When the Tuatha De Danaan, or people of the goddess Danu, reached Ireland’s shores to wage war against the Fir Bolg — a race of evil giants — Danu provided them sustenance, life and law.

insun (Sumeria)
insun means Lady Wild Cow, “the flawless cow,” “the wild cow of the enclosure” and “the mother of good offspring that loves the offspring.” It’s said that she was the divine power behind the qualities that herdsmen hoped for in their own cows. She was also represented in human form and could actually give birth to humans.

Some of the greatest men have believed that certain events in their lives were preordained and that certain individuals had the rare gift or precognition.

An example is that of Dr S Radhakrishnan, a professor of philosophy, who later became President of India. If you read the life of Dr Radhakrishnan by his son Gopal, you will come across the following passage on page 143:

'Sometime during these years when Radhakrishnan was spending the summers in Europe, he met Cheiro, the best-known palmist of his day. Cheiro studied Radhakrishnan's palms and forecast that he would reach the top, be the head of a State, but would before his death, lose his mind. Both these prophecies seemed at the time so wildly off the mark that they became a family joke.'

The above passage bears eloquent testimony to two facts -- preordination and the gift of precognition by rare individuals.

One of the most famous incidents is that of Winston Churchill who had a lucky escape from a bomb attack in a car. On that day he happened to choose to sit on the far side from his usual place. Lady Churchill asked him

why, 'I do not know', he replied. The he said, 'Of course I know. Something said to me 'Stop' before I reached the car door which was held open for me. It then seemed to me that I was told I should open the door on the other side and get in and sit there.' Needless to add, Churchill escaped unhurt.

On the subject of destiny, let me state what I believe:

First, I believe that the basic pattern of an individual's or a nation's life is pre-determined.

Secondly, very few individuals have the gift of clairvoyance to foresee what is predetermined.

Thirdly, guidance is sometimes vouch-safed to receptive human beings by means for which there is no scientific explanation.

Fourthly, I do believe in the existence of free will but that again is within pre-ordained parameters. To my mind, the simplest analogy to the case we are talking about is that of a dog on a long leash -- the dog has the freedom to move about as far as the leash permits, but not beyond.

I come now to the experiences in my life on which I have based the four beliefs.

I am alive today only because of a virus that infected me more than 40 years ago. I was engaged to argue a Special Leave Petition which was to be heard in the Supreme Court on May 9, 1953. Chandrakant Mehta, a partner of Gagrat & Company, was the instructing attorney. We booked our return tickets from Delhi to Bombay by the night flight on the same day. On May 6, I developed a very bad cold with fever and had to return the brief.

The next day I agreed to change my mind and do the case since it meant a lot to a poor and deserving litigant. But on May 8 my temperature rose higher and I had no option but to return the brief once again. C K Daphtary, the solicitor-general, who lived in Delhi was gracious enough to agree to step into my place. Since I did not go to Delhi, Chandrakant Mehta, who disliked flying by night, went to the airline office and changed his own return ticket to the morning flight on May 10. The plane, which left Delhi on the late evening of May 9 with a full passenger load, crashed. There were no survivors.

At certain turning points in my life, when I would have made wrong decisions with my limited intelligence, I have felt as if my will was perceptibly bent by some Higher Power which saved me from myself.

In 1968, Govinda Menon was the law minister in the Congress government. He pressed me to accept the office of the attorney-general of India. After a great deal of hesitation I agreed. When I was in Delhi I conveyed my acceptance to him, and he told me that the announcement would be made the next day. That night I went to bed and looked forward to my usual quota of deep slumber. But suddenly and inexplicably, I became wide awake at three o'clock with the clear conviction that I should reverse my decision before it was too late.

Early in the morning I profusely apologised to the law minister for changing my mind. In the years immediately following, it was my privilege to argue on behalf of the citizen, under the same Congress government and against the government, the major cases which have shaped and moulded the constitutional law of India -- Bank Nationalisation (1969), Privy Purse (1970), Fundamental Rights (1972-73) and the Minerva Mills case (1980), among others. Thus, the most momentous decision of my life was made by a Force other than myself.

One morning in 1976 I invited Thacker, who had a gift for seeing into the future, for a quiet chat at my residence. He said to me, 'I see you occupying a beautiful, spacious mansion in Rome.' He continued, 'You will stay there for about two years though you will have a number of opportunities to come back to India.' I put the incident out of my mind.

In 1977, when the Janata government came to power, I received a communication from Atal Bihari Vajpayee offering me the assignment of ambassador of India in Washington. When I went to Washington, the words of Thacker came back to my mind. Thacker had made one mistake -- he had referred to Rome when actually it was in Washington that I occupied the beautiful, spacious mansion. I did stay there for almost two years during which period I had the opportunity of coming back to India a few times.

The most incredible experience of clairvoyance or precognition in my life was connected with Indira Gandhi's case which culminated in the declaration of the Emergency.

The Allahabad high court had, in June 1975, decided that the election of Indira Gandhi to Parliament should be set aside. That meant that she would cease to be a member of the Lok Sabha with a potential risk to her prime ministership. Indira Gandhi filed an appeal in the Supreme Court and her application for interim relief was argued by me on June 23, 1975.

Justice Krishna Iyer heard the application and passed the order of interim relief on the next day. The interim order was that, pending the hearing and final disposal of the appeal Indira Gandhi could continue to sit in the Lok Sabha and participate in the proceedings of that House like any other member, and could also continue to be the prime minister of India.

The only restriction on her was that she was not given the right to vote. The judge mentioned that this did not involve any hardship because Parliament was not in session at that time and that I could renew the application for the right to vote when Parliament reassembled.

On the plane which I boarded to return to Bombay, next to me was seated an elderly, simple man dressed in khadi, carrying a khadi cloth bag. He asked me what had happened that day in the prime minister's case and I told him briefly what the judge had decided. He mentioned the name of a clairvoyant in Bangalore who had made some predictions which he thought were rather curious. "When I left the ashram in May 1975 the clairvoyant told me that the prime minister would lose the case which she was fighting in the Allahabad high court and yet, after losing the case, she would become the most powerful woman in the world.'

I came home, wondering what the future would bring. In less than 36 hours the Emergency was declared, the invaluable fundamental rights of the people were suspended, and the prime minister virtually acquired all the powers of the leader of a totalitarian State. That was the black morning of June 26, 1975.

I need hardly mention that all the predictions were accurately fulfilled -- the assumption of supremacy which made Indira Gandhi the most powerful woman in the world, the cessation of that supremacy in March 1977.

It would be preposterous to try to give any explanation for the episodes I have related truthfully except on the hypothesis of preordination and precognition.

When you read Dr Raynor Johnson's The Imprisoned Splendour and Fritjof Capra's The Tao of Physics you understand why Sri Aurobindo and Rabindranath Tagore were convinced that India is destined to be the teacher of all lands. Saints never contradict one another and mystics have never been known to disagree.

Eastern culture and Western culture share the same heritage of spiritual experience. More and more men have begun to realise that we are the Peeping Toms at the keyhole of eternity. I should like to echo the wish with which Arthur Koestler ends the Roots of Coincidence that we would take the stuffing out of the keyhole, which blocks even our limited view.
