The a Chronic Dev Team just released an update to Absinthe, bringing the jailbreak utility to version 2.0.2.

There isn’t anything new in Absinthe 2.0.2 besides support for the iPhone 4 GSM iOS 5.1.1 firmware update (build 9B208) that Apple recently released…

Absinthe is compatible with most recent iOS devices running iOS 5.1.1, including the new iPad (iPad 3), the iPhone 4S, the iPad 2, the iPhone 4, iPod touch 4th generation, iPhone 3GS, etc. Note that iPad 2,4 support will be added later.

pod2g: we already have a part of the jailbreak for iOS 6

In case you live under a rock, you have probably figured out by now that the long anticipated iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak was released earlier today. This jailbreak is a common effort of several high profile iOS hacker, but we can all agree to admit that pod2g was the leading force behind Absinthe.

In an interview that took place a few hours ago, pod2g revealed an important fact about Apple’s next mobile OS. According to pod2g, the team is already one step ahead of Apple and has the necessary pieces to work on a jailbreak for iOS 6…

We won’t give up on jailbreaking iOS devices because this is too important for us and we already have a part of the jailbreak for iOS 6 and we will be ready right on time for it.

How can they have parts of a jailbreak for iOS 6 when iOS 6 beta hasn’t even been seeded to developers, you may ask? It’s my understanding that what Cyril (pod2g’s real name) means is that the hackers have several more exploits up their sleeves that they assume will still be valid for iOS 6. Of course, only time will tell, but assuming no intel leaks, one can be confident that a jailbreak for iOS 6 should be available shortly after its release.

We will not give you the exact recipe, but we have other exploits that we won’t release at any time. This is our secret. It allows us to inject stuff into new devices and to start dumping the memory. When we have the dumps, we look at different ways of finding the vulnerability.

So why don’t they release jailbreaks faster if they have all those exploits available? pod2g explains:

Each member of the team works differently and this usually leads to finding vulnerabilities quickly. We find them in one month or two and then we start exploiting them. We start this process only when the final version of the system is released. That’s why we always have a delay after the release to do a jailbreak. Because we need to be assured that what we do will work for sure, that they don’t fix it in the beta 3 or beta 4, so we start only when the release is here.

I don’t know about you, but I really like to find out more about what’s happening behind the scene. I’m really looking forward to meeting those guys at JailbreakCon in a few months and find out more about how they work.

How to convert an iOS 5.1.1 tethered jailbreak to an untethered jailbreak

If you currently have an A4 device or below that’s jailbroken on iOS 5.1.1 using a tethered jailbreak, you can use the new Rocky Racoon 5.1.1 Untether package to convert your tethered jailbreak into an untethered jailbreak.

This is great, because you don’t have to perform any sort of restore on your already jailbroken device just to change it into a jailbreak of the untethered variety. Even better is the fact that you can download Rocky Racoon from Cydia, and install it just like you would any other package to accomplish an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1.

Note: Your device must be jailbroken using RedSn0w for iOS 5.1.1 to perform a tethered jailbreak first. To do this, If you’re not already jailbroken using RedSn0w, follow our Absinthe 2.0 tutorial instead.

Step 1: Open Cydia.

Step 2: Search for Rocky Racoon 5.1.1 Untether and install.

Step 3: Reboot your device and verify that you can reboot without having to perform a tethered boot.

You could always restore your device, and perform a jailbreak using Absinthe 2.0, but there’s no need to do this since you can just use Rocky Racoon to convert your jailbreak over to untethered! A5 users (iPad 2, iPhone 4S, iPad 3) will not be able to use this initially, because there was no tethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1 to begin with. A4 users (iPhone 4, iPhone 4S) and iPhone 3GS users should be able to take advantage of Rocky Racoon with no issues.

Be sure not to uninstall Rocky Racoon 5.1.1 Untether, because all devices depend on this package to maintain the jailbreak.

Absinthe 2.0.1 now available to address bugs [Updated]

The Chronic Dev Team just pushed Absinthe 2.0.1 for Mac, Windows, and Linux. This release contains fixes for a small subset of bugs.

According to @pimskeks, version 2.0.1 is for “fixing a hang that could occur in certain situations.”

It’s advisable that you download the latest version of Absinthe from our downloads page if you plan on jailbreaking your iOS 5.1.1 device…

Friday is Funday: iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak is coming tomorrow

Just as pod2g alluded to in a previous post on his blog, it looks like the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak will be demonstrated live at the conference, along with its highly awaited released before the conference concludes.

The official Twitter account for the Hack In The Box Security Conference just sent out a tweet confirming “Jailbreak Live” will take place tomorrow, and they are offering special 1-day passes if you happen to be in the area and wish to watch history take place.

What time can you expect to see the untethered jailbreak released in your neck of the woods? We analyze the likely time for the release inside…

Since Amsterdam is 6 hours ahead of EST, and each day of the conference appears to be between 09:00~ and 18:00~ hours local time, the earliest we would see a release is at 3AM EST on Friday, May 25th. Interestingly enough, the official agenda for the conference lists actual times that members of the DevTeam and Chronic Dev Team are scheduled to present their work. The odd thing about the agenda, is that it lists the exploit as being for 5.0.1 instead of 5.1.1. This is likely a typo, unless the guys plan to talk about the exploits for the previous untethered jailbreak that happened back in January.

The agenda lists the following times for each presentation:

May 24th

Tweak: Beautiful Unfold lock screen

Unfold jailbreak tweak is now available for download. It was born out of Anton Kudin’s “fold to unlock” concept for the iPhone which immediately captured attention of the jailbreak community.

Three days later, that concept has been brought to reality thanks to German jailbreak developer Jonas Gessner. What this tweak does is pretty simple yet very effective…

As the name suggests, Unfold replaces the default slide to unlock behavior on your device’s home screen with a pretty fold up animation. It’s fully compatible with other popular tweaks such as LockInfo, Camera Grabber, Bulletin and IntelliScreenX, to name a few.

It also handles notifications normally.

It just works: there are no settings to configure and no home screen icon.

The only downside is that Unfold doesn’t work on the iPad yet.

The tweak also plays nice with the iOS’ passcode security feature in that unlocking a passcode-protected device reveals the standard passcode entry screen.

Unfold is free download available on Cydia under the BigBoss repo.

Rumor: Apple testing new iPhones with 3.95-inch, 1136 x 640 displays

Reports that Apple will be finally increasing the screen size of its next-generation iPhone have certainly been piling up over the past few weeks. And today, the credible 9to5Mac is throwing its proverbial hat into the ring.

The site has just published a report that, if true, confirms a number of existing theories regarding Apple’s next handset including display size and resolution, and the oft-rumored smaller charging port. Read on for details…

According to the report, Apple is currently testing multiple new iPhone prototypes. This echoes a previous story from iMore that claimed that the company has yet to decide on a finalized design for its next smartphone.

“Right now we know of a few next-generation iPhone candidates in testing. These prototype phones are floating around Apple HQ in thick, locked shells in order to disguise the exterior design to “undisclosed” employees. We know of two next-generation iPhones in testing with a larger display: the iPhone 5,1 and iPhone 5,2.”

The site isn’t quite sure which model will make it to retail shelves, but it says that both of the devices include new displays that measure 3.95-inches diagonally with resolutions of 1136 x 640. This matches up with the recurring 4-inch iPhone theory, which says that the display will get a bit taller but stay the same width, that has been floating around for the past month.

The report also mentions that both of the prototypes feature all-new, smaller dock connectors — another concept we have heard before.

“Apple will be bringing these dock connectors to all of their iOS devices over time, and it is note exactly a “pill-shape” as rumored. It’s basically a much narrower version of the current squared off (on the corners) dock connector. It is between the size of a Micro-USB and Mini-USB connector.”

Even with 9to5Mac’s accurate track record on the iPhone rumor front, it’s worth noting that these devices are still in the prototype phase and may never see the light of day. Not to mention that Apple has been known to float around ”fake” prototype models to discourage leaks.

That being said, the report does line up rather nicely with several previous dispatches. And from where we’re sitting, it definitely looks like Apple will be releasing a redesigned iPhone this fall with a larger display and a new dock connector.

How to prepare for the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak

The upcoming iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak release is imminent. It’s so close we can almost smell it.

For that reason, it would be wise to go ahead and analyse your current situation, and prepare for the jailbreak.

It has been confirmed that the A5 portion of the jailbreak — the jailbreak for iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and the iPad 3 — will only support iOS 5.1.1.

While nothing has been said about A4 devices, it’s a good chance that iOS 5.1.1 will be required to jailbreak any device with the new Absinthe tool across the board.

So what should you do? Should you update your device now, or wait until the jailbreak has been officially released?

Regardless of what you decide to do, I highly advise you head over to my downloads page, and download the iOS 5.1.1 firmware for all of the devices you plan to jailbreak. Go ahead and save the iOS 5.1.1 firmware to a place that you can easily identify later. I like organizing my firmware into folders for each device.

The next thing I recommend doing is further analyzing your situation. If you have a new iPad (iPad 3), go ahead and update now to iOS 5.1.1. This makes sense, because this is an A5 device, and there isn’t a preexisting jailbreak for the new iPad anyway.

If you have an iPhone 4S, or an iPad 2, it’s a more calculated judgement call. If you’re already jailbroken on either of these devices running iOS 5.0.1, then you may decide to hold off until the new jailbreak is released. Otherwise, you would temporarily lose your jailbreak until Absinthe 2.0 is officially released.

You could also decide that you don’t care about being on iOS 5.1.1, or that you don’t want to be on iOS 5.1.1 for various reasons. Keep in mind that a lot of the time it takes a while for every new tweak to be updated to support the latest firmware. The good news is that iOS 5.1.1 isn’t an astronomical upgrade like going from iOS 4.3.3 to iOS 5.0, so compatibility problems shouldn’t be a gargantuan issue.

If, however, you recently purchased an iPhone 4S or an iPad 2 preinstalled with iOS 5.1, then go ahead and update to iOS 5.1.1.

If you have an A4 device: (iPhone 4, iPod touch 4th generation) then it’s really up to you. Hopefully you’ve been proactive in saving your SHSH blobs, so you can always downgrade to previous firmware. iOS 5.1.1 is already jailbreakable (tethered) on iOS 5.1.1 for A4 devices, so chances are you may already have iOS 5.1.1 on your A4 device.

Regardless of your situation, the jailbreak — barring any unforeseen hiccups — should be released this week. Even if you were to be without a jailbreak for a few days, even the most hardcore jailbreaker can usually manage a few days without his or her favorite tweak.

iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak tool will likely be called Absinthe 2.0

With the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak right around the corner, work has apparently started on packaging the exploits into a tool that your average iOS device owner can utilize.

Tools like GreenPois0n and RedSn0w take 99% of the guess work out of the jailbreaks, making it so that almost anyone can take advantage of the benefits that jailbreaking brings to the table.

With that in mind, it’s no surprise that the highly anticipated 5.1.1 jailbreak will follow the same pattern. Judging from a conversation I had with an iOS hacker close to pod2g, it appears that the latest jailbreak tool in the pipeline will retain the Absinthe name.

In other words, I’d say it’s totally reasonable to expect an Absinthe 2.0 iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak sometime within the next few days…

As you can see from his tweet above, iOS hacker @xvolks is currently knee deep in the testing process with Absinthe 2.0 — the tool that will apparently accomplish the iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak.

This bodes well for ease of use, as the original Absinthe tool produced by the Chronic Dev Team was about as simple as simple gets. I’m not saying that the process will be the same as it was with the original Absinthe, I’m just saying that we can expect the Chronic Dev Team to do like they always do, and ship a product that is simple and straightforward.

Of course none of this is 100% in stone until we see a release within the next few days. But I think this is a good indication as to what you can expect.

iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak release is just days away

It looks like the prospect of the iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak being released during the Hack In The Box security conference is becoming more likely, as pod2g announces on twitter that the jailbreak release is mere days away.

A few days ago, pod2g said that “something big” will happen during the event regarding jailbreaking. Honestly, what can be bigger than the 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak?

Get ready ladies and gentlemen, it’s almost here…

Not only did pod2g give us a timetable for the upcoming jailbreak, but he’s also updated the list of devices that the new jailbreak will support.

Previously, it was stated that the iPod 3G and the iPhone 3GS would now be supported, yet the list was only updated with the iPod 3G as being absolutely confirmed.

Now, it appears that the iPhone 3GS has been definitely confirmed as well. Here is the latest list of supported devices according to pod2g’s blog:

The days are now being counted for the release of pod2g’s iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak, and though the hacker has already been announcing sporadically what device would or would not be supported, he has come up with a formal list.

The good news is that Apple’s most popular devices will all be supported by the untethered jailbreak. The bad news, if you have an older device, you might be out of luck…

Good news for those of you highly anticipating the upcoming jailbreak for iOS 5.1.x: it should be out in the next two weeks.

Due to considerable demand, hacker pod2g has released an FAQ answering some of the most pressing questions that he’s received from the public.

Here is the full Q/A from pod2g’s blog:

The poll about releasing now or waiting for 6.0 ended with a 64% / 33% to release ASAP. Where is the link ? ETA ? How much % done ? etc.
As I said earlier in twitter, there’s still a lot to do to have a user friendly and well tested tool to install the jailbreak on end users devices. Expect a release in a couple of weeks.

Will it be compatible with my ?
It will be compatible with any device running iOS 5.1.1 except iPod 3G, iPhone 3Gs and ATV3 (right now, may change in a near future, nobody knows).

Why is it so slow to release now that the iPad 3,1 has been demoed ?
There are 16 different devices out there to work on and to test. It takes time.

May I be a beta tester?
No, sorry. Only really trusted people (that can be counted on one hand) could have access to the jailbreak. I don’t want any leak to happen.

What if I offer you 1,000,000$?
That doesn’t change a thing.

The main things we can glean from this FAQ is that it is now apparently safe to update to iOS 5.1.1, the jailbreak will be universal outside of the Apple TV 3, iPod 3G and iPhone 3GS – and it will be released in two weeks.

Rumor: iPhone 5 due in September, iPad mini in August, iPad 4 in Q4

Citing sources close to Apple’s supply chain, Asian hit-and-miss trade publication DigiTimes reported this morning that Apple will launch a sixth-generation iPhone in September, followed by the long-rumored seven-inch iPad mini in August and a fourth-generation iPad in the fourth quarter of this year.

According to the report, Pegatron has reportedly landed orders for the next iPhone while Foxconn is said to manufacture the seven-inch iPad mini, presumably designed to tackle the lower-end of the tablet market currently occupied by Amazon’s $199 Kindle Fire tablet…

Standard caveat applies here, folks: take this report with a healthy does of skepticism as DigiTimes is a mixed bag with respect to the Apple rumors biz.

So, here’s right from the DigiTimes claim chowder:

To mainly focus on Apple’s orders, Pegatron has also internally decided to downsize its SI motherboard department and to shift resources to Apple’s orders. Since Asustek has been reducing its motherboard orders to Pegatron, while gross margins are also rather low, the shifting in resources is expected to benefit Pegatron in its operations, the sources noted.

Pegatron, which currently produces the iPhone 4S and the new iPad, has reportedly re-tooled its factories and is ready to assemble the next iPhone model.

Pegatron has already finished expanding its equipment and labor force for Apple’s orders.

Pegatron and Foxconn are Apple’s favorite contract manufacturers, but Shenzen-based Foxconn gets by far the biggest portion of orders from apple.

Now, we’ll believe a new iPad form factor when we see it.

Likewise, we’re not so sure about the fourth-generation iPad launching in the Q4 2012.

The iPad 3 launched in March and Apple likes to stick to a yearly release schedule for the iPad. Well-connected Apple pundit John Gruber recently likened the idea of another iPad this year to “a completely made-up nonsense”.

And in spite of common wisdom, I’m also torn regarding a smaller, 7.85-inch iPad. In case you were wondering, here’s what it would look like next to its 9.7-inch sibling.

On the other hand, the iPad mini might not need a re-write of existing apps, as some folks argued, because the size of user interface elements rendered on a 7.85-inch display would still conform to Apple’s guidelines.

A smaller display in conjunction with existing manufacturing processes would certainly let Apple price the iPad mini even more aggressively than the $399 16GB Wi-Fi-only iPad 2.

With the high-end covered by the new iPad and the middle-end addressed with the iPad 2, Apple has thus far conceded the low-end of the market to Amazon’s seven-inch Kindle Fire tablet, which retails for only $199.

The Fire took off to a pretty big start, becoming the best-selling Android tablet. However, per latest IDC data, the device has plummeted from a 16.8 percent share in Q4 2011 to just four percent share in Q1 2012.

Apple’s late co-founder famously dissed seven-inchers, remarking in a conference call with investors these would need to ship with sandpaper so users could sand down their fingers in order to hit tiny icons on the screen.

DigiTimes also reported this morning that Foxconn is set to open a 10,000 square meter state-of-the-art China headquarters in Shanghai. Completion is scheduled for 2015 and the offices will serve as Foxconn’s new operating facility, as well as a research & development and sales center.

Do these iPad and iPhone launch dates make sense to you? I mean, two new iPhones by year’s end, how wacky is that.

It would certainly be prudent to launch the next iPhone sooner than later.

Samsung in the first quarter beat Apple to the smartphone punch, the fact the iPhone maker even mentioned in court documents. Plus, the South Korean conglomerate has justlaunched its third-generation Galaxy S smartphone.

Note: Even though iDB and pretty much every media outlet out there refers to the next iPhone as the iPhone 5, w’re pretty confident Apple will drop the numerical suffix altogether and simply call the device “the new iPhone”.

iOS 5.1.1 includes fix for dangerous Safari URL spoofing vulnerability

Apple just released a new version of its mobile software: iOS 5.1.1. The update includes a number of bug fixes, and also apparently contains a patch for the dangerous URL spoofing vulnerability in mobile Safari.

We told you about the exploit, discovered by the folks at Major Security, back in March of this year. It allows web pages to spoof URLs in Safari’s address bar, leading users to believe they’re on a different website…

Apple explains the fix on its iOS 5.1.1 security support page:

“Safari

Available for: iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation) and later, iPad, iPad 2

Impact: A maliciously crafted website may be able to spoof the address in the location bar

Description: A URL spoofing issue existed in Safari. This could be used in a malicious web site to direct the user to a spoofed site that visually appeared to be a legitimate domain. This issue is addressed through improved URL handling. This issue does not affect OS X systems.”

Apple properly credits the discovery of the vulnerability to David Viera-Kurz of Major Security. Viera-Kurz was the first to bring up the issue, publishing an extensive blog post and even creating a working demo of the bug in action.

I understand that this is a result of being able to jailbreak 5.1, but the fact still stands that he has the talent that the jailbreak community could benefit from.

As you’re probably well aware of, i0n1c has an interesting relationship with the jailbreak community. On one hand, he’s a clearly talented hacker that can solve some of the most perplexing issues regarding iOS jailbreaking.

On the other hand, he continues to spite the community with rants about piracy, money, and an overall disdain towards jailbreaking in general…

Hence, i0n1c, known as Stefan Esser to those that know him, is holding his cards tight. In other words, don’t look for him to provide an untethered jailbreak for A5 devices any time soon. The tweet above is just his latest dig at the community. I actually find it a tad bit humorous to be honest.

Many have continued to call him out for his rants, and some have responded with downright nasty rebuttals.

I say we should all act civilized when it comes to i0n1c. He’s very talented, but he’s not the only solution to our problems. @pod2g and various others are currently working on a new jailbreak solution for the latest iOS firmware.

In the meantime, why not try extending an olive branch to i0n1c? Hating him surely isn’t going to make him start helping out again. Perhaps some serious constructive dialogue will be enough to urge him to change his stance? He raises some valid points, even if he doesn’t take the most advised path at expressing his thoughts.

Sometimes the truth hurts. Either way, he’s entitled to his opinion, and we are entitled to ours.

I just hope that those opinions are expressed in a more constructive manner — on both sides of the fence.

Warning! Jailbreakers should avoid updating to iOS 5.1.1

Apple started pushing out iOS 5.1.1 to compatible devices. The update doesn’t appear to bring any new features, but it does include a handful of bug fixes and other improvements.

While we’ve already confirmed that A4 devices running the new firmware can be jailbroken, that doesn’t mean you should update. In fact, those of you with with an A5(X) device should steer clear of it…

MuscleNerd just sent out a warning via Twitter, telling jailbreakers with an iPad 2, a new iPad or an iPhone 4S to stay away from the update. As most of you know, pod2g is making great progress with the iOS 5.1 jailbreak, and upgrading to 5.1.1 could ruin your chances of using it.

A4 device owners are welcome to upgrade at their own accord — 5.1.1 is jailbreakable on older devices. But just remember that it is currently, and could remain, a tethered hack.

iOS 5.1.1 is out: fixes iPad network switching, Safari syncing, AirPlay, HDR

Right on the heels of iOS 5.1 release back in March, a new maintenance update has just appeared on Apple’s servers. The new firmware for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch models carries a build number 9B206 and includes several bug fixes, including one for the annoying network switching issue with iPad 3.

Minor AirPlay issues are addressed and reliability of HDR photography taken using the lock screen shortcut is now improved. The firmware update also squashed another issue with syncing Safari bookmarks and Reading List.

Note to jailbreakers Don’t update.

According to release notes accompanying the update, it contains the obligatory improvements and bug fixes, including:

• Improves reliability of using HDR option for photos taken using the Lock Screen shortcut
• Addresses bugs that could prevent the new iPad from switching between 2G and 3G networks
• Fixes bugs that affected AirPlay video playback in some circumstances
• Improved reliability for syncing Safari bookmarks and Reading List
• Fixes an issue where ‘Unable to purchase’ alert could be displayed after successful purchase

You can install the update by connecting your device to iTunes via a USB cable and hitting the Check for Updates button in the Info section of your device information pane.

Alternatively, go to the Settings app on your device and choose Software Update in the General section.

pod2g now running iOS 5.1 untethered jailbreak on iPhone 4

Things are starting to pick up regarding the iOS 5.1 jailbreak, as we’ve just received word that pod2g has hit another major milestone in his efforts to hack the latest version of Apple’s software.

The security expert just tweeted “Heya! My iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1 is now untethered ” This is good news, considering the only jailbreak currently available for iOS 5.1 is tethered…

The news is also exciting for a couple of other reasons. For one, it means that hackers are actively working on the 5.1 jailbreak. And two, it means that things are coming along nicely.

We still don’t, however, have any kind of ETA for when the jailbreak will be released to the public, and if/when it will work with A5(X) devices. But at least we know we’re making progress.

Rumor: Apple developing iPay as the next iPhone becomes your iWallet

Yeah, I know analysts promised us flying cars many times before, but bear with me for a second. In addition to opining that the time is not right for an Apple-branded television set until 2014 due to dire economic conditions, the same credible analyst also advised clients that a mobile payment platform from Apple is to be expected.

He calls it iPay and guesstimates it’ll work with NFC technology believed to be in the cards for an upcoming iPad and iPhone hardware refresh…

The analyst is “more optimistic” that Apple is developing a mobile payment solution of its own. He thinks it’s going to be marketed under the iPay moniker and require future iPhones and iPads thought to implement the necessary near-field communication (NFC) technology.

NFC technology lets mobile devices talk to each other over short distances, using radio waves. One simply touches two NFC-enabled devices together in order to, say, confirm the payment, exchange contacts and photos and other items.

According to AppleInsider, Moskowitz wrote this morning in a note to clients:

Currently, we do no have any evidence of an iPay platform in development, but it is our view that the company’s current Apple Store app that enables consumers to check themselves out of an Apple Retail Store could be the stepping stone.

Though it’s just a speculation at this point, but it has its merits.

True, it doesn’t seem like iPay will make a whole lot of sense on iPad. That said, mobile payment capability undoubtedly sounds like a natural progression of the feature set folks have come to expect from their iPhones.

It’s not a question of ‘if’, but ‘when’.

We know Apple’s been hiring NFC experts and they filed several patents detailing a digital wallet on portable devices. Recently, the United States Patent & Trademark Office granted the company a key patent for iWallet.

And if multiple reports from sources like The New York Times and China Times are anything to go by, the next iPhone will feature NFC technology.

Also important – Apple owns premium customers who spend money via iTunes and willingly entrust club Cupertino with their credit card information and confidential data.

The iTunes ecosystem is huge. Last month, Apple revealed it had a whopping 200 million credit card-enabled accounts on iTunes.

This makes the popular online store the biggest credit card hub on the web.

Adding mobile payment functionality that extends outside the confines of digital content purchases on iTunes is a no-brainer.

Tapping iTunes credit cards and the more than 365 million iOS devices in the wild, Apple’s iPay should take off in an instant.

But what about financial institutions such as credit card companies, banks and payment processors? Apple currently partners with these guys and covers credit card transaction fees incurred with each iTunes purchase.

However, the money guys are unlikely to hand over point-of-sale processing to a middle-man. On the other hand, Apple did disrupt some pretty powerful industries and bankers could be easily next for a sprinkle of Apple magic.

And while Google was the first to crack mobile payments with their Wallet thing, Apple is best poised – in my opinion – to simplify and mainstream this technology.

I can certainly see myself paying for groceries just by waving my iPhone.

The case for a four-inch iPhone with 16:9 display

There’s no shortage of iPhone mockups these days, a tell-tale indication of the launch date drawing near (we’re looking towards a Fall launch). We already told you about one possible iPhone mockup and shared an interesting theory regarding the argument for a four-inch iPhone.

The problem is, the vast majority of artists’ renditions depict an iPhone with a blown up display that, however, features the same 4:3 aspect ratio as all prior models.

So, how about a four-incher with a 16:9 aspect ratio display?

The above mockup, credited to Dan Provost (via MacStories), depicts a 16:9 iPhone with a four-inch display.

The image above shows the current iPhone, a mockup of the alleged 16:9 phone, and a mockup with a bigger 3:2 screen at 300dpi, which measures 3.84” diagonally. I estimated that the physical size of the phone would need to increase slightly, getting taller in the 16:9 version and wider in the 3:2 version. I don’t think either of these size increases are deal breakers. The 3:2 version is actually still narrower than the iPhone 3GS.

The big issue with changing the aspect ratio: apps.

Because Apple definitely would not reduce the iPhone 4/4S’s 326 pixel-per-inch count on a larger canvas, elongating the 4:3 inch to a 16:9 aspect ratio would increase the number of pixels, meaning all existing apps would not scale up properly to fill up the entire screen.

The easiest and the least user-friendly solution would entail letterboxing the app’s user interface.

Provost has an interesting take on the dilemma:

I think Apple should keep the 3:2 aspect ratio and increase the physical size until it reaches the 300dpi retina boiling point, maintaining the 960×640 pixel count.

Doing this would let Apple brand a four-inch iPhone with a 16:9 display under the Retina moniker whilst keeping the existing 960-by-640 pixel resolution for app compatibility.

Bumping up the screen to a 16:9 aspect ratio and retaining a 326 pixels-per-inch density would increase total number of pixels available. Apple could use those extra pixels for additional user interface elements.

Think widgets, a souped up multitasking bar, bigger Dock icons and even – why not – touch controls like the navigation buttons found on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

Another good example are banner notifications which normally appear subtly at the top of the display, overlaid on top of the running app. The additional pixels would let Apple render banner notifications unobtrusively, right above the running app.

Those are all valid points and if Apple chooses to take the 16:9 route, they’re definitely not going to make everyone’s life harder by requiring that developers update their apps just to cater for an extra few hundred pixels.

Apple is all about simplicity. I’m convinced they’d rather keep apps running at the 960-by-480 pixel resolution and use the extra pixels to tweak the iPhone’s user interface and provide some unique software features not found on 3:2 iPhones – just like Siri has remained an iPhone 4S exclusive, even though it’s just software that we know runs well on non-A5 devices.

There seems to be a consensus out there that Apple should increase the screen size of a next-generation iPhone to a four-inch(ish) canvas.

I’m not a proponent of blowing up the iPhone’s display just because the Android camp has been doing it in the absence of any meaningful and major differentiator.

But I sure would prefer my iPhone with a 16:9 aspect ratio display.

WinterBoard receives major update

WinterBoard. It seems like just mentioning the name of the utility can send shivers down the spine of jailbreakers everywhere. In fact, a lot of folks won’t install a particular app or tweak of it requires installing the unpopular themer.

So what’s wrong with it? Speed, stability, you name it. WinterBoard has long been a scapegoat for jailbreak-related problems. But the utility may be worth a second look now, as it has just received a major update…

As a minimalist, I don’t typically use WinterBoard. But the utility has been working great for me since I installed it and a handful of compatible tweaks and themes on my iPhone 4S this morning. And the word is it runs a lot better on A4 devices as well.

At any rate, if you want to revisit WinterBoard, you can find it in Cydia, in the default repo, for free.

Time management apps have to go the extra mile to impress us, and the all-in-one tool Awesome Calendar looks like it might just outpace the competition.

Feature set meets interface is the name of the game when multifunctional is the main requirement, and Awesome Calendar does a beautiful job of marrying the two. Its calendar, notepad, and to-do list modules work in concert to bring users lives into productive harmony. Each of these aspects feature some extra functionality to make them shine, with Awesome Calendar’s superior design balancing form and function along the way…
While the individual functions that the iPhone is capable of carrying out to help us balance busy schedules are impressive, UI can make or break the user experience, no matter how many of those fantastic features are combined in one app. Awesome Calendar’s user interface does a great job paving the way for users to actually utilize each and every one of its functions quickly and conveniently. Not to mention, it looks good while it gets the job done.

The notepad, for example, includes integrating photos with the notes. Now, if you’re thinking you don’t have much use for that, hang on. The truly awesome part about that is that if you find it necessary for some reason to write down a physical note on paper, adding it to your main time management later without typing it out again is simple.

The to-do list links to the calendar, and displays its percentage completed on the due date. Working on a month long project? Making sure you’re on track by glancing at your calendar is easy.

The calendar function is the jewel in Awesome Calendar’s crown. Calendar sync with Google calendar, a holiday calendar layover that allows you to choose from 35 different countries for your special days, and multi calendar management that makes integrating your online calendar, school calendar, work schedule — whatever — brings everything together gorgeously.

Apple’s dedication to secrecy is the stuff of legends. We’ve heard a number of stories regarding the elaborate measures the company takes to ensure that unannounced products and other projects never make it outside its walls.

So as you can imagine, photographs inside Apple’s headquarters are fairly rare. But the folks over at Apple Gazette have put together an extensive gallery of pictures taken inside the building, so we thought we’d share a few of them…

Once you enter Apple’s headquarters, you pass by a large reception desk — where most folks are asked to put away their cameras. But just beyond that, is the building’s atrium. Outfitted with tables, couches, and apparently iPad signage, this is one of the most popular places to hang out at Apple.

Venturing down any one of Apple’s many corridors might look like this: glass walls and wooden floors. But don’t get too excited, chances are if you’re allowed in the area, there’s nothing awesome going on. It’s well known that Apple’s R&D and design labs are accessible by only a handful of people.

This, obviously, is one of the recreation rooms on Apple’s Cupertino campus. When they’re not working on the next iPad or iteration of iOS, Apple employees can come here to play ping pong, foosball, or just relax.
