Welcome to our blog site. We are looking forward to blogging this term.

Blogging will help us with our reading and writing skills. We will also learn about cyber safety and using the Internet wisely. It will help us keep in touch with our school community and hopefully, people from around the world. We will be global citizens.

Science

This term we are studying materials and their properties. Today we did strength tests to see which material was the strongest.

We used containers and attached string to different materials. We used paper, foil, fabric and plastic. We then added marbles to the containers until the material broke.

Tin foil was the weakest material, with only 10 marbles. Plastic was the strongest with 150 marbles. The paper took 90 marbles and the fabric took 60. We were surprised at how many marbles it took to tear the plastic - 150!

Intrepica is a great Literacy site. Here we can practise our spelling, comprehension, reading and grammar skills. Everyone in class now has a password so they can play Intrepica at home.

Newspaper

This week we had Mr Darwen, the manager of the Bowen Independent Newspaper come and visit us at school. We learnt about all the different parts of the paper. We also learnt about the different people who work at the newspaper. We never knew it took so many people to produce our local paper.

Later on this term, we are going to write our own newspaper report. We hope to share our writing with Mr Darwen.

Flozzie the Mozzie

Today we had Grace and Kate from the Whitsunday Regional Council come and talk to us about the dangers of Dengue fever. Dengue Fever is a nasty illness passed on by mosquitoes. We learnt to pick up, tip out and throw away any containers that contain water around our yards or school so the mosquitoes can't lay their eggs in any water.

New Term

Well the new term starts on Monday 23rd January in Australia and I'm looking forward to meeting my new class and working on our blog in 2012. I just know we are going to have a fantastic year. Click the voki to hear my message.

Today is the last day of term and the last day of Year 3 for us. What a wonderful year we have had together. We wish everyone a wonderful Christmas and happy holidays. We will be back in January 2012 with a brand new class of students.

Sadly we have to say good bye to Georgia, Olivia and Karni-Rie this term. We are going to miss them all. We hope they will keep in touch with us through our blog next year.

Aboriginal Art - Dreamings

This week we have been learning more about the Aboriginal art called Dreamings. These paintings depict stories of a 'dreamtime'. A time when the earth first began and their ancestors first created the landscape, plants, animals, and beings that inhabited it.

Two styles have developed and lasted for thousands of years. One Dreaming style employs dots and the other style uses delicate and detailed line designs.

Over a few days this week we have used both styles, dots and lines, to achieve our final art pieces. We enjoyed completing this task, while also developing an appreciation for the time and patience required.

The dot painting certainly tested the patience and persistance of some in our class, but the final results are impressive.

Peculiar Plants!

Last week during lunch Karni-Rie & Jessica found these peculiar looking leaves on a tree. They have raised a lot of curiousity within 3B. Some students thought insects or a plant disease could have caused this.

PLEASE HELP!

We would love to know if you have seen leaves similar to these before and an explanation for their unusual growth.

Front Beach - written by Liam

Last Thursday morning, Mr Haworth's and Ms Bullemor's classes gathered under the school to walk to the Front Beach for our recycling reward trip. After safely getting to the Front Beach, Mr Haworth told us what we would be doing for the day.

First, we had to put on gloves and pick up rubbish, starting at the jetty and finishing up at the playground. We found pieces of glass, paper, plastic straws, cigarette butts, bottle tops and nylon rope.

Next the adults cooked lunch on the BBQ's while us kids played. Cricket, soccer, volleyball and footy were some of the games we played. Other kids played on the rocks. Chicken and beef kebabs, rissoles and lamb cutlets were some of the healthy food that was cooked. Liam and Karni-Rie made fruit kebabs from mango, strawberries, kiwi fruit, apple and orange.

After lunch we played a bit more and then we walked back to school. Mr Haworth told us how important it was to recycle and also to help keep our beaches tidy to protect the environment and marine creatures. He thanked the teachers and parent helpers and we went back to class. We had a suntastic, awesome day!

We all know that the sun's rays are dangerous. But did you know Ultra Violet rays from the sun are very harmful to our skin? They are invisible, but they can cause skin damage. This week we made bracelets using UV detection beads. Out of the sun, they are white, but as soon as UV rays touch them, they change to bright colours. When this happens we know we need to be sunsmart by:

wearing sun screen
wearing a broad brimmed hat
wearing a UV protection shirt when swimming
staying out of the sun during the hottest part of the day
wearing sunglasses

Even under shade cloth and in shady areas, the beads detected UV rays!

I am so excited as I am getting my Smiley badge tomorrow because I have been well behaved and followed the school rules. So tomorrow is Friday, that's the day when I get my Smiley badge at parade. My mum is coming to watch me. I have to keep my badge by following the school rules, I won't lose it. It is going to be the BEST day.

Aboriginal Culture

This term in SOSE we have been studying traditional Aboriginal culture and comparing it to our modern day lives. Tyrese brought in these lovely examples of Aboriginal art.

Solar Ovens

After testing our ovens to see how hot they could get,(90*C) we were ready to cook. We were trying to find out what would cook the quickest and why. We cooked marshmallow biscuits with chocolate on top, mini pizzas and cookies. We predicted the marshmallow biscuits would cook first and the cookie dough would take the longest and we were right! We discovered the thicker the food item, the longer it took to cook. The best part was eating it.

Kindawry

On Friday Liana was invited to help release a Flatback turtle. The turtle is approxiamately 50- 60 years old and she has laid her eggs. Liana chose the winning name in a competition held to name the turtle. Kindawry has a transmitter attached to her and we will be able to track her journey.

We did it! We won the recycling competition and will be visiting the Front Beach with the Year 7's soon. We will be having a sausage sizzle there, how exciting.

Thank-you to everyone who brought in items to be recycled this week. We have a good chance of winning the class prize which will be a trip to the Front Beach with the Year 7's. What a great prize that will be.

Books in Homes

It's that time again! This is our third set of books we have received from Books in Homes. Everyone in our school received 3 books of their choice and a book bag at our Friday parade. We have collected at least 9 free books of our choice this year.

Many students have been 'Caught Reading' and received extra books. We also received extra books when we entered the Books in Homes competitions. What a wonderful year of reading we have had so far.

Recycling Project

It is our turn to bring in objects from home to recycle. It is important to recycle and look after our environment. Every little bit helps.

Our school is having a competition to see which class can bring in the most items to be recycled. We will recycle:

aluminum cans
tin cans
plastic containers (recycling number 1 or 2 visible on container)
tetra packs (juice boxes)
cardboard and paper

Please remember to wash out any containers first.
