Welcome to our blog site. We are looking forward to blogging this term.

Blogging will help us with our reading and writing skills. We will also learn about cyber safety and using the Internet wisely. It will help us keep in touch with our school community and hopefully, people from around the world. We will be global citizens.

Fitzroy Readers

We are very proud of our Fitzroy Reader program which was introduced this year. Students are grouped and read the Fitzroy readers and other books daily. We have seen some tremendous progress made with our reading skills this year. Lachlan, Blake, Jazarah-Jay, Rhiannon, Sophie and Teagon have read up to level 60 and have finished all the Fitzroy Reader levels. Congratulations everyone.

Year 7 Visit

Bowen State School is a Reef Guardian school and our Year 7's are about to go on a reef trip to celebrate all the hard work they have done about the reef this year.

A few of these are: keeping our beaches clean, painting signs around our drains that lead to the reef, designing beach cleaning tools and co-ordinating our school recycling project.

Recently the Year 7's have designed a diorama of the reef which they brought to our classroom to show us. What a great way to show our beautiful reef.

Ghana Beat My Drum - written by Lachlan

Yesterday we went to a show called 'Ghana Beat My Drum'. We met Jonas who showed us where Ghana is on a map. He also showed us his African instruments.

First we copied his hand movements, then he started playing a marimba (African xylophone). When he was finished his hand moves, he took out his talking drums. They were made by his brother. He used animal fur and he had to do a lot of sewing. The fur had to go on the outside of the talking drum.

Next he had showed us a lot of different instruments. No one knew what he was going to do. He was making a band. He called six people out at a time to play in his band. We began to clap and giggle.

My favourite part was when he was making the band because he teased us by saying "no" and then smiling at us with a cheeky smile.

We had a wonderful time and I really enjoyed the show.

Starlab

Wow! What a surprise we had when we arrived at the hall and saw the Starlab! CSIRO had come down from Townsville to present a show all about space. We had to crawl inside the dome! Once inside, Melissa, the scientist from CSIRO projected the night sky up onto the dome. We saw the sun, moon, planets, stars and different constellations in the night sky. I was very impressed with everyone's general knowledge about space.

Readers are Leaders

2012 is the National Year of Reading. This year our class participated in the Premier's Reading Challenge. We had to read 20 books in 3 months.

Everyone in our class completed this, and this week, we received our certificates signed by the Premier Campbell Newman. We are very proud of our reading achievements because we know how important reading is.

Science

This term we are learning about solids, liquids and gases. We looked at the properties of liquids and learnt a new word, viscosity. Viscosity is how fast a liquid flows. A high viscosity means the liquid is thicker and not runny, like syrup. A low viscosity means it is runny and flows easily, like water.

Koalas

We had been learning about informative texts and Teagan brought in a poster she had made at home. She also researched information about Koalas and presented her information to the class. Well done Teagan, it is great to see students doing work on their own at home.

Welcome back to Term 4. This week Year 2s were learning about 2D shapes. They had the chance to play with tangram puzzles. It was quite difficult to make pictures from the 2D shapes.

Congratulations to our end of term attendance winners. They attended school for 90 - 100% of the whole of term 3. These students know that every day counts.

Last Day Fun

We had a great time making 'Dirt Cups' on the last day of term. This term we have been studying how to write a procedural text, so we decided to follow a recipe (which is a procedural text) and make edible 'Dirt Cups'.

First we mixed a chocolate pudding mix and put it in the fridge to set. Next we crushed some oreo biscuits to make the 'dirt'. We then layered the pudding (soil) and biscuits (dirt) and added a few snakes.

We all agreed they tasted delicious.

NAIDOC

This week we celebrated NAIDOC week. We celebrated the history and culture of Aboriginal and The Torres Strait Islander people. We were very lucky to have a special painting from the Zaro Cultural Gallery presented to our school. Officer Paul was our guest of honour and he told us about his role in the community as a policeman. During the week, we made Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dolls which Mrs Turner used to decorate the hall.

This week we completed our science task. We had to design a cover that would insulate our water bottles and keep the water inside cool. We used a variety of materials such as alfoil, bubble wrap, fabric, paper and plastic which we had tested during the term. We then went outside and took temperature readings to see which materials were the most effective. We compared our results and reflected on how we would change our materials if we did the tests again.

We were very lucky to have Angela's grandad come and visit us. He collects fossils up in Richmond. Angela has brought in a few different fossils for us to see. This time we were looking at a fish fossil. It is amazing to think Richmond was once part of the ocean! Now it is far away from the ocean.

Personal Safety

Ditto the Lion, Torres the Turtle and Braveheart team visited us this week. They put on a show to teach us all about personal safety. We learnt that if we ever feel uncomfortable, it is okay to 'tell someone'.
