Kitchen Organization

Those of you that have been in my kitchen (or in my house for that matter) will laugh that I am posting about any kind of organization. Let's just say I am not by nature a super organized person. I am rather laid back, and my house reflects that. I do, however, like a somewhat minimal and clean home, so I need all the help I can get to keep it that way.

So today, I am posting tips for the organization of the naturally unorganized.

Part One: Fridge Junk

One thing I just don't like, and I truly apologize to all of you that have this, is the fridge front plastered with all kinds of pictures and junk. I HATE a messy fridge front. My personal solution to this, is a hidden wall in my mudroom, where I keep calenders, chore charts, and kid stuff. I am planning some kind of a permanent cork-board wall solution, but until that happens, I just stick everything right to the wall. I know some people may object to this, but it works for us, and it works for me because it keeps everything close, yet I don't have to look at the clutter all day long.

Also, the chore chart is an invaluable tool at keeping on top of jobs in the house, and keeping kids accountable to their responsibilities.

Part Two: Pet Gear

One of the best purchases I ever made, was this lidded Pottery Barn basket. I saved up, and paid full price for it because it was the PERFECT size to hide our plastic bin of dog food.

My basket was from the Winston collection, which I don't think they are making anymore, but I am sure there are other options. (The Pottery Barn Havana line could be a replacement).

Anyway, I LOVE that the dog food is close at hand, it doesn't look ugly, and because it is down low, and easy to access, even our six year old can take his turn feeding the dog.

The other "so simple its genius" pet solution I have for you, is to buy a hook (available at any hardware store), and hang up your dog leashes by the door.

Now I have to say, I would not do this next to my FRONT door. I happen to have a back door that is in the mudroom, so I don't mind the hook and leashes in there. I think it is tidy, and so easy to access.

Part Three: Counter Clutter
I keep my counters as bare as possible. With the food, homework, dishes, etc. that end up on the counters everyday, I just don't like to add extra clutter in the form of lots of decorations, or too many appliances or anything. And yet we still end up with that inevitable pile of stuff everyday. You know the stuff, the merit badge applications, report cards, assignments, brochures, mail, catalogs, etc. Well here's what I do. First of all, I recycle all junk mail as soon as I take it out of the mailbox. It never even makes it into the house. This step has saved me a TON of work since I started doing it. Catalogs I want to look at (Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, etc.) are the exception. For those, I simply put them on the magazine shelf on my entry table until I can look at them. Every few months I sort through the magazines, and toss the out of date catalogs.

Everything else, that I am not ready to deal with yet, or that I am not ready to throw away, gets put in a crate on the bakers rack. And when it gets full, and starts to look like this........

I pull everything out and sort in on the counter. I have a trash pile, save pile, file pile, and keep in the crate a little while longer pile. It's amazing that after a few weeks, so much of the pile that I at first didn't know what to do with, becomes something I can easily throw in the trash.

And when it's all sorted and put away, the crate looks more like this.

I also keep some of my large serving pieces on the bakers rack. And usually a plant in the basket on the top shelf.

I also usually keep my little beehive candy jars filled with seasonal, and holiday treats. (They are empty now, because I couldn't stand to look at the Christmas candy another day)!

I think the baker's rack seems to consolidate the inevitable "stuff" we all have, and helps keep my counters and kitchen a little more clutter free. I have also used a hutch in the kitchen before. If you have the space, I highly recommend a separate piece of furniture to stash the day-to-day clutter. It really does help keep your kitchen feeling more clean and tidy.

And that's it! Organization tips from and for the unorganized. I can't wait to do more January cleaning and organizing. And I have GOT to get rid of all the Christmas decorations.

Spec Home House Tour

Exterior Of Home Before

The week before Christmas, we found out that the sale of our spec home had fallen through $%#@!!! It also occurred to me that I had never given a whole tour of the spec home. So here you go.

The kitchen before had VERY nice new cabinetry from a few years ago, but it also had mismatched appliances, a laminate countertop (in a clashing color), and Pergo floors. (I am not a big fan of Pergo......sorry). Also, super dated lighting and plumbing fixtures.

The kitchen received new paint, amazing brick pattern tile floors, stainless appliances, lighting, granite counters, cool industrial faucet, and a really pretty crackle finish subway tile backsplash. Look how much better the cabinets look with the right color countertop!

Julie (My Mom) sewed the new hand towels to coordinate with the curtain fabric that became the color inspiration for the whole project.

Julie also sewed the curtains. The cute green tabs were a solution to a shortage of curtain fabric.

(Not sure how I managed to do that, but the tabs fixed it).

The new flooring, and getting rid of the ugly vertical blinds made a HUGE difference in the amount of light in the room. Also notice the giant pine tree from the before that is gone in the after. It is one of MANY trees that fell in Davis County in the huge wind storm.

It is hard to get a good picture from inside the bathroom, but the stripe in here is one of my favorite parts of the whole house. It has a slightly metallic sheen to it, and looks really great with the marble floors, and Ceasarstone Counters.

We put new bathtubs in, and white subway tile surrounds. Here is another look at the striped wall.

Besides the obvious new carpet and paint, we also widened the entrance to the family room at the bottom of the stairs, and put in a new iron and wood topped railing (in the left of the photo). We also got rid of the obnoxious low hanging light fixture at the bottom of the stairs.

At one end of the family room in the basement was a wide storage room. It took a lot of the light from the room, and seemed like a giant waste of space, so we tore it out. The family room is big and bright and open now.

I have written about the laundry room changes before. I love this room now!

I have also posted this fireplace before too. I think it is one of the most dramatic changes. I wish you could see it in person. The wood work fireplace surround is so beautiful in real life.

Candyland Christmas Part 2

I updated the original post I did for my outdoor "Candyland Christmas" theme. But most likely people didn't scroll back down through all the posts to see the update. I finished up the urn bases by adding some fresh pine boughs leftover from the windstorm outside (necessary to hide the rocks).

And I brought out some lanterns from inside.

It's the Hubs birthday today.

The thing about Bryan is, he is always a good sport. He is super willing to help out ANYONE that needs his help. He is pretty much the best person I know in that regard.

He's a super nice Dad.......

And a super fun Dad.........

And you know those assignments they give kids in Elementary School, where you have to write about "My Favorite Person", or "My Hero". Well so far, Bryan has been picked hands down every time as the topic in those assignments........for all of our kids.

Even though this is what his face looks like when I say things to him like, "Briny, do you think you could rock over the old fireplace"?

He still rocks over the old fireplace.

(The problem with being good at things, is that you get asked to do them).

I can't think of anyone I would rather spend time with.

And we just keep having more fun year after year.

Oh, and he looks pretty good in a suit too. Happy Birthday!

We love you lots.

The Wrong Kind of Vintage

Look what I dug out of the basement last week. I stumbled across a craft bin I haven't opened for YEARS! Apparently I spent a good portion of 1996 tole painting woodsie ornaments.

I can totally picture myself at the kitchen table in our condo wearing my Gap overalls and Doc Martin sandals, painting my little heart out.

And good thing I owned the Christmas Simple Shapes pattern book. I wouldn't want to stray too off course with my painting.

How else would I have known that bears wear sweater vests???

Oh, and I guess snowmen too. Check out the sweater vest on this guy!!!

Remember when we put Raffia on EVERYTHING? Do they still make Raffia?

Anyway, the dozens of ornaments that didn't get painted in 1996 turned out to be a really fun Christmas craft for my kids on Saturday.

Just A Note

Vintage Christmas Tablescapes

Have you seen the Anthropologie Kerr Jar snow globes? They are adorable. But, they are $38 dollars. A little out of budget if you ask me. So this is my "Knock Off" Anthropologie snow globe.

I packed a whole bunch of ornaments (some vintage, some recreations) into a wooden crate I have had FOREVER.

I didn't put up my "fancy" tree this year, so I had plenty of ornaments to put into tablescapes around the house. The crystal bowl on the right was my Grandma's.

The boughs came from outside after the huge wind storm here last week. There are literally pine boughs piled up everywhere all over the city.

Candyland Christmas

This is my second year doing the "Candyland" Christmas theme outside. I made the candy poles last year out of 6" PVC pipe, that I spray painted white. I hot-glued the ribbon around the pole, and then added giant ornaments glued to the top.

My neighbor came over while I was putting everything together and says "You sure have a lot of stuff on there", (picture me doing my doofy voice impersonation there). To which I replied, "Oh, do you think it is too much?" (As if I care what he thinks). He then says "I don't know, don't ask me". It was at this point that I realized there was food all over his chin. I then said, "You're right, I won't ask you, you don't know anyway". He was not in the least offended.

I swear I did not pose this picture. Fred was staring at me taking pictures through the glass, and Bryan thought he wanted to be let out. So he let's him out, and Fred plops down right in my picture. Then he posed like he was gazing off into the distance romantically.....I swear! This was not planned!

I know, this is a bit over the top than my usual taste, but my kids love it, and that is actually the reason I do it.

I took these pictures before I had finished the bases. (See below). The rocks are needed to hold the heavy poles in place. Last year I had fake snow in the urns, and giant candy ornaments, but the "snow" blew all over the yard and made a huge mess.

UPDATE: I did get the bases done. I used some of the fallen boughs from the wind storm to fill up the bottom of the urns. I also brought out some lanterns I already had. I like the finished product MUCH better.

Heber City Dream Home

So what's on the agenda for this weekend? Finishing up the decorations.....doing a little shopping.....some real estalking......Yup that's right. I have been pretend real estate shopping again. One of Utah's new "hot spots" is Heber City. It's a little more rural than Park City, but still very beautiful, and becoming very elite. It use to be nothing more than a quaint little valley with farms and old time milkshake shops, but the increasing popularity in Park City and Deer Valley, and the limits on availability there, have pushed the boundaries out further where second-home seekers will go.

This little (well this 5700 square feet) beauty is available to purchase, for just under $2 million.

There are 5 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms (so that your whole family and two of the neighbors can all be using the facilities at the same time).

There is also 1.2 acres of space to call your own.

This house is actually a tad too modern for my taste. (I do like those bar stools though).

I think the bedrooms are lovely too.

It looks to me like the TV can be raised into the ceiling? Not sure, but I love that cabinet to the left.

Super cute. I wish we could see the bedside table better. Those curtains are AWESOME.

Everybody needs there own personal massage room right? The problem is, where is the masseuse suppose to stand? It looks a little crowded in there.

This is actually my favorite room in the whole house. I love the idea of using tile in unexpected ways. That built in shelving wall is AMAZING. I also really like the low sofa and the masculine IKAT pillow.

I hope there is another point of access to get home besides that tiny little bridge. I'm pretty sure that thing wouldn't hold my SUV. To see the complete listing, go here.

Vintage Christmas Mantel 2011

So I still envision making a cute glittery banner to hang in front of the silver beads, but to be honest, I'm not sure if I'm gonna make that happen.

A few weeks ago I got the fresh garland from Home Depot (for 5 bucks!), but it's getting pretty brittle. I have been spraying water on it with a squirt gun. Anyboday got any other ideas for keeping it fresh?

If only I could find the energy to put up the OUTSIDE decorations......

All About Ottomans

I have been searching for months now for the perfect Craigslist coffee table to turn into an ottoman. My list of requirements was strict. The table had to be burly enough to withstand kids using it as a diving board onto the sofa, and big enough to meet the space requirements for the space. I finally found what I had been looking for...........and he cost only 20 bucks!

Meet Otto. Otto the Ottoman. When I brought him home, there were lots of very loud protests. "It stinks! It's so ugly! Get rid of it! Take it back!"

I admit, he is still just a big nasty 1970's coffee table, but he is destined for greatness. I am still deciding on which fabric to use (Bryan has suggested vinyl?!#??which won't be happening), but it does have to be durable, stain resistant and still great looking.

I have long loved this ottoman in Kate Winslet's house from the movie "The Holiday". I am debating button tufting or no button tufting for my coffe table makeover. I am just not sure if my upholstering skills are quite strong enough to endure tufting. But this is a REALLY great looking ottoman.

Lands End for Sears

If you don't feel like you are up to the whole search Craigslist for months, buy supplies, learn how to upholster route, there are MANY good and affordable off the shelf options.

I first saw this K-Mart storage ottoman on 6th Street Design School. I have been looking for an ottoman for a client's kitchen/great room makeover, and I thought this would be perfect for her small space. She has decided to skip the ottoman, but I still think it is a GREAT deal. Right now it is only $79! You can pick one up here.

The Ballard Designs Storage Bench (shown above) looks incredibly similar to the K-Mart one, but starting at around $400, the K-Mart bench is just a fraction of the price.

Anyway, I will post way more pictures and a "HOW-TO" tutorial on "how to turn your crappy 1970's coffee table into an ottoman" as soon as I have finished. Hopefully it won't be too long, but I am also working on:

Park City Heaven

I love Park City. I really do. I wish I could live there. I know it might not be as "kid friendly" as where we live now. And I know that there a lot of part time residents, which makes it a little difficult to be neighborly. Still, I love it.

Occasionally I peruse the real estate listings there. And of course I don't look at anything that would actually be in my budget. If I am going to pretend real estate shop in Park City, I am going to do it with a pretend budget.

Most of the time I find the design in Park City too literal........giant log furniture and light fixtures encrusted with moose and bears. That's why I love it when I find a well done Park City home. Rustic AND refined. It's completely possible to have a beautiful mountain home that doesn't feel like an episode of Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman. Bittersweet Birthday

It's a bittersweet day today. My little Quentin is turning six. You might think the bittersweet part is that my baby is getting older. He is growing up and needing me less and less each day. When he is at school I am all alone at home. Yes, all those things are true, but the sad news of the day is........
he threw up this morning.

Some kids might be excited about getting to stay home on their birthday, but not Tinny. He has been excited to go to school on his birthday for weeks! He has changed his mind about his birthday treat like ten times.

So he'll just have to postpone all that until tomorrow. I have a sneaking suspicion that he is actually not sick, but just so excited about today that he made himself sick. :( so sad.

Thanksgiving Snapshots and a Christmas Sneak Peek

We had Thanksgiving at the hotel this year with my mom's extended family. Meaning my Grandma's brothers and sisters.....and families. I'm not gonna lie. It was a little off the hook this year. My family was a tiny bit late (no surprise) and because of that, we ate Thanksgiving Dinner in the hall....that's right, on those faux leather hotel lobby chairs.....in the hall......on paper plates. So, I'm not sure if we'll do that for our Thanksgiving Dinner again. We may just come back to the hotel later in the day for the card playing/swimming/pie eating that goes on after the big meal. It was fun though. And super great to see all my extended cousins.

Also, immediately following Thanksgiving Dinner, (I had literally just set down my fork), my Decorating Tsar (Tinny) asked when we would be getting out the Christmas Decorations. I had told him about three months ago that we would take out the Christmas Decorations when Thanksgiving was over. Apparently he had listened.

So I'm not ready for a whole big Christmas reveal, but just a sneak peek at what we are doing.

The best snag I have picked up this year is this $5 dollar FRESH garland and wreath from Home Depot. The store told me they would not be getting more in once the shipment was gone, so if you have time today I would run over and get some.

You do have to pull an ugly red felt bow off the wreath before you use it (well I guess you don't have to, but we did). I will show some more pictures when we get more done.

Happy Turkey Day & Best Free Graphics Ever

So I promised to tell you all about the greatest website I just discovered. And maybe I am slow (totally possible) or maybe you don't know about it either.

The Graphics Fairy here, has HUNDREDS of the coolest vintage clipart, and graphics you could ever imagine. Did I mention they are FREE!!!!

I used a few of her prints for the Gallery Wall. (Still not finished by the way). You can either print them on your own printer, or I think the best thing to do is to email what you want, and specify the size, and send them to your local printer. I had a vintage deer poster made in 11 x 14 size, for literally under two dollars. You can also use the art for stationary, invitations, so many possibilities!!!

Look how cute this wood be in a kitchen. I thought it would be fun to have it printed on a color background.

These guys would be ADORABLE in a kids room.

She also has lots and lots of vintage botanicals, which if you have looked, you know how hard they can be to find.

And I will probably use a few for Christmas stuff. There are so many to choose from.

Anyway, enjoy! I probably spent two hours at her site last time I looked.

Happy Thanksgiving Week

This year the Thanksgiving decorating at my house was pretty simple. I strung up a string of photos of, well you know...things we are thankful for. I had planned a "Give Thanks" or a "Be Thankful" banner, but it never panned out.

One thing I am thankful for is that the kids only have one day left of school, then it is FIVE whole days of fun fun fun. (Oh, and sleeping in).

I guess I did put out Grandma Blanche's brown transferware turkey platter. Which I could not love more, I might add. (Grandma Blanche is Bryan's grandma).

I am not sure why I was the one to get the platter. I am thinking that was a pretty lucky snag.
Anyway, here is what I would like this Thanksgiving to include: pie-making with my Dad; homemade rolls; Diet Coke; cranberries; and gossip.

Office Ideas

I have been thinking A LOT about offices lately. As I have had more design work to do, I have been spending more time in my office. When I think about my dream office, my first thought is one that doesn't have old cereal bowls stuck to the desk. Oh, and maybe someplace comfy to sit and look at a magazine. A girl can dream can't she?

I also LOVED these images from Holly at Nothing but Bonfires here.

Did you notice the turquoise dry erase board on her desk? It is actually made out of the IKEA frame I wrote about last week here. And no, I still haven't bought mine, and yes, there is still half a gallery wall hanging in my family room. And I am seriously thinking I am going to have to buy that rug. It is a steal from Overstock here.

Don't tell Bryan I am thinking about starting my office project........at least until I have my gallery wall done.

Gallery Wall

I'm working on a new gallery wall for my family room. I was sitting at the bar (my kitchen bar, not like a real bar) last Saturday night while my hubby and his buddies watched their 7th or 8th PAC 12 Football Game of the day. We were supposed to have tiled the laundry room that morning, but the laundry room was no further tiled than it has been for the past two years, so I decided to work on another project instead. I have planned on doing something about the blank wall behind our flat screen TV for a really long time. And for some reason, that day became the day.

I took some quick measurements (with lots of dudes shouting at my back to get out of the way) and then made this quick "to scale" drawing.

After I had a rough idea of what I thought would work in the space, I looked through my scrap frame pile, and did a little online shopping to fit in what would work with the sketch I had made.

I found this great FREE printable here......
(It's available in the yellow, aqua, gray or red). I emailed mine to the local copy store, and had them print it 11 x 14, for about $1.25.

and this cute (and cheap) IKEA frame here.....

then I got out my trusty 64 pack of crayons and added in color where I thought it was needed. The striped frames on the right will be pictures of my kids on cut and painted 2 x 12 pine boards (when I get them finished).

I am only halfway done with the install...........so the left half of the gallery wall is installed without the right, and I assure you it looks GREAT! It actually looks pretty ridiculous. I need to hurry and finish the rest of my art projects, or people will think I am insane. I wonder if you can see the wall from the street? (Yikes!!!) I will post some pictures when it is actually done.

Some New Art

After school yesterday, I asked Tinny to help me with an art project. He is the ultimate craft man, so I knew he would agree. I used a simple canvas I bought at JoAnn's, then just used craft paints. I put masking tape in two lines where I wanted the lettering to go (to keep it as straight as possible for a kindergartner), then I traced the outlines of the forks and spoons, and outlined them in black paint. After that I just let him do the rest of the painting himself. I love the faces!

I had originally thought I would just frame this art project he had done in school a few weeks ago, but I knew we could amp it up a little. I had been trying to find something for my kitchen dining nook for a long time, and I thought the fork and spoon idea was brilliant for that spot.

The lighting in the pictures looks a little drab, but the painting really does liven up the corner.

Master Bath Reveal

I am finally getting around to revealing the master bath from the spec home.

I love the beautiful white basin and the vessel filler faucet. I am still really loving chrome right now.
I also have to give a glowing recommendation for the Ceasarstone countertops. The color I picked for both upstairs bathrooms is "Nougut", and it works wonderfully with whites, grays, silvers, and Carrara Marble.

The art, mirror, glass shelf, and the towel bars (I forgot to take pictures of those....darn), are all from IKEA. Again, I am giving a GLOWING recommendation. Great price, nice quality, beautiful design.

BEFORE: The master bath had Pergo floors, very little lighting, a 60 inch single basin vanity !?#?!, and no tub or shower.

We removed the 60 inch vanity, in exchange for a more functional 36 inch vanity, and added a tub/shower combo. This is in the "During" stage, where you can see the new tub installed, and the white subway tile going up! One of my favorite features.
