Life has been so busy around this house that I have let time slip between my fingers. My youngest is growing like a weed before my open eyes and there is nothing I can do to make the moment stop.

Eighteen months.
Nineteen months,
and now almost twenty months.

This amazing daughter of mine has blossomed from an infant into a unique child with great charisma. Her personality shines in her eyes, in the glow on her cheeks and in the heart of her laugh. She brings me joy, happiness, and the desire to be the best I can be so that I may guide her wisely down the path of life.

These days Jessica:
Is a talking machine and repeats anything and everything you say. She can clearly express what she wants and doesn't want, and she isn't afraid to use that firm "NO."

Loves to read and looks forward to library day. I can never get her to leave that weekly visit.

Just finished her music classes and will take a few workshops over the summer. We'll pick back up with the regular music schedule in the fall. We may also start "Mommy and Me" ballet in the fall.

Enjoys playing dress up, even if it's a Batman or Darth Vader costume.

Will pick up a light saber and make the appropriate sounds while swinging it in the air and wearing a pair of my heels. She can also sing the theme song to Star Wars. I have GOT to get that on video!

Still has an attachment to her bunny and wants it most hours out of the day. She also has an attachment to her binky, which drives me absolutely crazy!! I hate, can't stand, loathe the binky. My other children never used one so this is very new to me. I obviously dropped the ball and just taking it away when she was younger. Now she has a clearer understanding and asks for it. She asks for it! Any suggestions??

This past weekend the restaurant hosted our annual lobster clam bake. It has become a tradition to take the kids down for an evening of good food and fun (you can see last year's post here). This year Jonas was feeling a little under the weather and decided to avoid the lobster, but Joshua and Jessica couldn't get enough.
Little neck clams, tossed salad, broiled lobster and Bender's fries. And to top off the night homemade blueberry pie and home to cuddle and watch a movie.

As a side note, I know I've talked about adding more food content to this blog. That is still in the plan, but I've lacked motivation on actually photographing food pictures these days. It could be the absence of a kitchen, the fact I haven't really been baking or cooking or that I am simply too tired. I used some leftover lobster meat to make lobster rolls on sunday and meant to take pictures. Instead, I sat outside with the family and enjoyed the moment :)
IF the sounds of an ocean dancing lulled in the background and IF I had a Bloody Mary in hand it would have felt like a Maine vacation.

Recently life has been busy. Very busy. Our days our filled with trying to get settled into our house, finishing up the school year, cub scouts, soccer, music and swimming. I can't seem to figure out how to keep up with the laundry and we still don't have a kitchen. Although, we do have a stove!! There are toys everywhere and the legos have literally taken over. Does anyone else struggle with these toy invasions?? It absolutely drives me crazy. I had a moment of weakness this weekend and told Jonas I'll take away all legos for a month if he can't learn to pick them up. While the family thinks that I am the "master picker upper" it is in fact NOT my job to pick up after everyone.

Jonas woke up this morning and immediately cleaned up all the legos and his room. I heard the soft slap of his feet running down the hall to share his excitement. And with an enormous grin, he asked if I could make cinnamon rolls. Warm cinnamon rolls with no icing. Now that, my friends, is my job.

Now that we are moved in and almost unpacked it's time to start focusing on my favorite portion of the process....decorating! To be honest, I'm not very good at it and I always change my mind. I could spend a week arranging a table or mantel and then two weeks later decide I don't like it. I guess that's the fun part though, the always changing and rearranging.

Joshua was pretty set on having a space themed room so I let him help me in the decorating process. We made a road trip to Ikea this week to pick up a few accessories and new bedding. I have to say, Josh actually picked everything out himself and I couldn't have picked it better myself! I'm hoping to have all the pictures hung by next week so the room will be ready to share.

Mother's Day is about enjoying those long cuddles in bed with your little ones. Tucked under blankets. Toes touching. Mother's Day is about soaking in every extra kiss they give you. Smiling when you can hear their giggles and tiny feet running down the hallway to present you with the best homemade card. The card that melts your heart every time you read it. The card that you keep in your nightstand so when you're feeling down you can turn to your children's words to make you happy.

Mother's Day is about spending a little extra time with the ones you love. It's about stopping for a moment to truly see what you have created, and what you have created is amazing. Every day I am amazed by my children. Who they are and who they will become.

Thank you Jonas, Joshua and Jessica for such a wonderful day. Thank you Jon for being right there with them. Thank you for being who you are; my best friend. And, thank you for letting me sleep in! That's exactly what I needed after a late night of painting in Joshua's room. Also, a huge Thank You to my sister and brother in law for hosting mothers day. These pictures are from their gorgeous backyard.

Well, I learned one thing over the past few days...when our house gets hit with the flu bug it gets hit hard. Joshua was a lucky little guy because his lasted 24 hours. Jonas finally went to school today after missing three days and being sick over the weekend. I couldn't get out of bed for two days. And you know what that means when mom can't get out of bed for two days: laundry overload, a messy house, no dinners, no bedtimes snacks, no brushed teeth and mismatched cloths. I'm finally starting to feel better today and when it hit Jess this morning I didn't have a choice, I had to get out of bed. So in between sipping my green teas I have been catching up on laundry, cuddling with Jess and steam cleaning my mattress. I also steam cleaned the couch (the white couch) that got hit not only by Joshua but by Jonas too (right after he drank grape juice).

I'm hoping my energy will return tomorrow because, I tell you what, since being sick I have lost my motivation and it has me a bit down. I still need to finish unpacking. I honestly thought I would have the kid's rooms painted by now, but I'm not even done with one. I hardly ran last week and I have no desire to run this week, which just depresses me. I would love to get in the kitchen and cook and bake but I have no oven AND I never thought I would miss a kitchen sink so much. I hate to complain, but I thought I would keep it honest. Hopefully this is just that nasty flu bug that's bringing me down. And hopefully I'll be feeling much more like myself tomorrow.

As you can see, I'm almost done painting Jess' room.
The walls are finished I just need to add another coat or two to the trim.

Recently we have enjoyed playing outside in the new yard, taking long walks around the neighborhood and running in the park. Since we don't have a kitchen we have enjoyed heading down to the restaurant to visit Dad for dinner. Our kitchen is slowly coming a long. The cupboards are painted and we're ready to put the doors on. Then we wait until the island is finished and hopefully pick out an oven soon. I spent the weekend cuddling with two boys who battled the flu. I've found that running with Jess in this neighborhood is a bit of a challenge. These hills have got to help shave time off my three mile routine. I'm supposed to run a half marathon in June and I'm starting to get nervous. With the move and being sick I haven't ran over six miles in awhile. Recently we finished our office and I couldn't be happier with the outcome. I love the white and can't wait to get to work in this lovely space. And recently, Jess loves playing in mama's closet. I think this little lady loves shoes as much as I do!

Well friends, I'm off to lay in bed. This sick mama is fighting a nasty case of the flu.

It's been one week since we moved and I don't feel settled in a bit.
We have a lot of work ahead of us. Unpacking, putting away, rearranging, painting, cleaning.
I'm looking forward to getting our home put back together.
I'm looking forward to lazy nights with the kids and couch cuddles with Jon during movies.
I'm ready for the late night painting parties of one to to be over.
The stress of knowing that I have more wallpaper to remove.

I do love hanging new curtains, laying out rugs and picking up goodies at various stores.
I love decorating the kid's rooms and unpacking their belongings.
I love arranging items on a mantel, listening to music and glancing out the open door.
I love my new view. A wide open park waiting for us to play.

Instead of packing on Saturday morning we decided to jump on beds.
We listened to music.
We ate crepes for breakfast
and we played soccer.

And after we enjoyed this time together I headed to the new house to clean. For hours and hours.
I stripped wallpaper. I removed contact paper. I scrubbed floors and walls.
And when I came home I packed and packed until the wee hours of the night.

I probably won't be around this week. The official moving day is Thursday and we couldn't be any more excited!
We have no kitchen at this point. Jon removed the cupboards and island today. The stove is in pieces and we have a dumpster in our yard. As I type I am in the midst of packing while Jon is spending the night at the new house to continue prepping the kitchen and removing carpet from the kid's rooms. Somehow between now and Thursday I will get Jess' room painted. The boy's rooms will follow...after I remove the wallpaper. No really, I'm excited for all this! Ok, maybe not the wallpaper removal and painting of ceilings, but I figure a week of hell...I mean labor.. will be worth it. Once the painting is done the decorating can begin, and let me tell you, the boys are so excited for that part! Jonas asked if I could surprise him with his room. He wants to walk into it one day after school, eyes shut, and it will all be done. Guess I better go put that supermom cape on ;)

day three of our trip consisted of:
strolling around Greenwich Village, shopping for the little ones, eating at the most amazing bakery Il Cantuccio, purchasing good coffee, eating pizza, walking off our full bellies, indulging in tapas at Casa Mono, heading to the airport for a late flight home to our loved ones.

Last night we managed to escape the packing for a couple hours
to celebrate Jon's mom's birthday down at the restaurant.
We had the whole back room to ourselves to run and jump and play.

home tour. the living room

Over the years the living room has become my favorite room in the house. It is the gathering space for our family and it is the gathering place for memories. It is always filled with the sounds of children's voices, a touch of laughter and always music. It's where Jon and I lay around and chat at night, over music, over Mad Men or Battlestar Galactica or sometimes over a late dinner and a fire. Over the past eight years this room has seen many emotions, celebrations and gatherings. I remember the days of when we first moved in and I just found out I was pregnant. I could barely make my hour drive home at night because my stomach was churning with "morning" sickness. I remember the days of coming home to find curtains ripped from the walls and Christmas trees fallen over thanks to an overly anxious dog who I found on a highway by our home (Bailey).

I removed the carpet from this room by myself and boy did I surprise Jon when he came home from work. "Look honey, we have hardwood" is how I greeted him. I painted the walls. I removed wall paper. And then I decided to paint the walls again.

I paced the floors of this room while I went into labor. Three different times. I can remember as if it was yesterday sitting on the couch while in labor with Jessica. Watching Dexter, sipping on a glass of wine and trying to relax between those intense contractions and waiting as long as possible to go to the hospital. Eight hours later she was born into this world. While we experienced such joys in this room we also experienced loss. The day Bella fell while Jon took her for a walk, the call from the vet that bone cancer had aggressively taken over and it required immediate action. We held off. We wanted more time so we brought her home. I spent an entire weekend with Bella on the living room floor. Cuddled among the blankets and pillows. Gently petting her belly and rubbing her head. Knowing that I will never have a dog like this again. A dog whose soul shines and can be seen by just looking in their eyes. Bella left us in this living room. In our arms, beneath our tears, she walked to heaven. I still cry when I think about that moment. When the vet came to our door to do the one thing we never thought we could do. But I also know that she will come with us to our new home and there she will rest (we chose to have her cremated and will bury part of her ashes at the next house, does that make us sound crazy??)

Over time, the sadness of this room became replaced with joy. Holiday celebrations and family traditions quickly grew. Christmas Eve parties followed by late night wrapping, good conversation between a husband and a wife and always good wine. Surprises from the Easter Bunny, family photo shoots, fort building, camp outs and many family movie nights. I will miss this room dearly, but I will pack up it's contents, I will place the memories in a box and carry that box to our new home. I look forward to unpacking, to placing those memories on a shelf and remembering. Remembering everyday who we are; a family.

**As a side note, I took these photos while our house was on the market. Therefore, this is probably the cleanest it ever was and it's a bit staged. I took down several prints/paintings after I painted it white and never hung them back up since we were selling.

i know this is a little bit of photo overload! i promise, there are only two more parts to this new york trip. we just had such a great time i couldn't help but take a ton of photos. i'm looking forward to sharing the rest of our photos with you this week and finishing up our home tour posts. then i should be all caught up...on the blog that is...not in life. it's lots of packing and cleaning for me. tomorrow i head over to the new home to start round one of cleaning. then we decide what to paint and jon may even tackle the kitchen. there are lots of projects ahead of this little family!

new york trip. part I

I know I'm a bit behind on this post, but I'm excited to share our trip to New York City with you. Since we had such an early flight we arrived into the city at 8:30am, which gave us the entire day. We started with espressos and breakfast at the Chelsea Market, a little walking around, wine shopping, sight seeing in the meat packing district and then finally checking into our hotel. We enjoyed lunch and Bloody Mary's at the Oyster Bar at Grand Central and then took our time getting back.

Since this was our big night out we decided to splurge and go to the Gramercy Tavern with some friends. It was absolutely amazing! What a treat to dine in such a well run restaurant. It actually reminded me a bit of my travels in Europe. It truly was a fine dining experience. After we saw our friends off for the night we stopped by Hotel Gansevort for a drink at the rooftop bar. I should probably add the most expensive drink into that description. Now, I know we're from Ohio, but $30 for a drink? Really? So after we finished those, ate the ice cubes and licked the glasses dry we headed back to our hotel. Of course we had to check out our hotel rooftop bar so we stayed out, danced a little and enjoyed the night. And the best part of all...we got to sleep in the next day!

And, this is pretty much the only picture of Jon and I together from this trip. A camera balanced on a lamp shade.

We are finally feeling a bit better around this house, although Jon and Joshua had to miss church due to a slight fever. Our Easter Sunday was lovely and casual and just what we needed. A day spent with family and good food that ended with little ones in bed and Jon and I making plans for the new house while watching Mad Men. I hope you enjoyed your Easter!

Oh, I was looking back at pictures from last Easter and I can't get over how much Jessica has changed. Where does the time go??

The last photo is super grainy due to no flash and low light, but I had to share this moment. Right before bed Jon and Joshua had a jam session on the back porch with a little Michael Franti. I love seeing Josh get so excited over instruments and sounds. He truly has the ear for music.

today was spent catching up. hunting and coloring easter eggs. researching the perfect star wars egg, which was a failed attempt. baking desserts for sunday's dinner. riding bikes under the warm sun.

today was spent cuddling on couches when little ones didn't feel good. sewing small treasures for morning baskets. cleaning a house that was abandoned all week. driving by a new home.

The good news is that Jess is feeling better. The bad news is I haven't gotten out of bed in three days and Joshua and Jonas are now sick too. We have lots of resting to do in order to get better for Easter, which is hosted at our house. Being sick this whole week has really set me back, but instead of freaking out I'm going to get better and get busy. Hopefully I'll be back tomorrow, but if not I have lots of fun posts scheduled for next week. Oh, and while I have been sick in bed we officially bought a house!! That's right! The bank accepted our offer on a short sale home and we close the end of this month. My head is so fuzzy from being sick this wonderful news hasn't even registered with me yet!

Last night we celebrated my mom's birthday.
This woman is simply amazing. Our relationship grows closer and closer each and every day. My mom is my best friend, my inspiration and my guidance. I only hope that I can follow in her footsteps to become a woman of strength and support that she has been for our family.

small change.

Our days are filled with routines, schedules, boxes, messy craft benches, lost jewelry pieces and baskets upon baskets of laundry. Slowly our books and toys are making their way to boxes in preparation for the big move. And as I prepare I look for the small changes in life. I've talked several times about balance and simplifying my life. These goals continue and there's no better time to purge than a move!

So I will continue to make small changes in my life. I will pass along those objects I don't need to simplify the home. I will finally get rid of all my jewelry supplies that I don't use. My closet will become condensed. I will recycle my piles of Vogue, Bon Appetit and Architectural Digest that have sat untouched for months. I will downsize my enormous book collection and finally pass along my text books from college. I will let the kids use my art supplies that have sat boxed in a corner since the day we moved in. And perhaps I'll pick up a paintbrush or those soft pastels and become inspired.

But in the mean time, I take baby steps with this small change.

And speaking of change, I've been thinking about incorporating more food posts into this blog. I would love to know your thoughts. I feel like I talk about food all the time, I love to cook and bake and we enjoy eating out. It's no secret we're foodies who also enjoy the spirits. We do own a restaurant! So, I thought I could talk a bit more about that experience. Drop me a note and let me know what you think.

sometimes i wonder what these little minds think. do they dream of empty forests tucked away under a canopy of green. a vast floor covered in lilies and moss and sweet smells of nature. do they dream of big city skyscrapers reaching to endless heights. birds circling overhead a lonely park surrounded by buildings that hustle and bustle. cars and buses and trains dancing across lined streets filled with music of a city.

or do they dream of open fields with rolling hills of grass. an apple tree standing at the end of a white fence. the perfect spot for a game of tag. a place to climb and run and play. here there is time set aside for picnics and lazy day naps under a warm sun, blue sky and dreamy clouds. sometimes i wonder what these little minds think. big dreams. lost thoughts.

It is so good to be home. Our getaway to NYC and New Jersey was a blast, but it always feels so good coming home. When the kids found their way to our bed last night and this morning I couldn't have been happier. I held each one of them close and whispered how much we missed them. Today we are enjoying the sun, the cool air and catching up. I'm not thinking of the crazy month ahead, today I am only thinking of my little ones and enjoying every minute with them. We're riding our bikes and trikes, we're playing legos and games and reading lots of books since I have four days of reading with them to catch up on. And, in tradition with every trip Jon and I take, the kids get to go on a search to find the souvenirs we brought back for them.

I know I've been a little absent from the blog and the online world lately. I'm having a moment in my life where there are so many things on my plate I feel like it may tumble over! I'm looking forward to finishing my home tours post this week and sharing our trip with you next week. And we close on our house this Wednesday! I can't believe it. We're currently looking for temporary housing because we haven't found a home yet. It's definitely going to get interesting, but nothing our family can't candle. Happy Spring Friends.

it's been busy around our house and i'm feeling a bit overwhelmed.
happy, but overwhelmed.

the home sold, nothing is packed, we move in a month, i have an art show i'm preparing for and jon and i will be out of town for a few days for a wedding. oh, and did i mention we don't have a home to move into yet? but enough complaining. this is my positive space and i wanted to share this picture i snapped today.

my parent's have the most amazing magnolia tree. it's branches stretch over the house and across the yard. the pink blossoms float in air against a bright blue backdrop. and in the distance you can smell the lake. fresh water walking across the street. and a sun setting over day.
this was the perfect ending to my night. now i head off to bed and wake to spend a long weekend just the two of us in the big city.

home tour. the boys room

The boy's room is an addition that we made to our home in 2008 in order to gain some more space. We converted a storage area that was above the garage into a bedroom. The boys have been sharing this room from the day Joshua moved out of the crib and into a big bed. When that day came we used the twin beds and matching dresser that Jon used when he was younger. Since it's on the small side I store books in bins under the beds and the toys go in a toy box at the end of Jonas' bed. The pictures are homemade masterpieces by the the boys that I put in Ikea frames and Jonas made the dream catcher from this tutorial.

This room may be tiny but it is overflowing with memories shared between the boys and our family. At our next home the boys will no longer share a room, and in a way it makes me sad. Over the years I have fallen in love with our bedtime routine. We have turned endless pages in a variety of books. Mom, dad, grandparents, sitters, friends, cousins, aunts, uncles and now Jonas and Josh have all read books here. When those lights go out there is a moment of bonding with my boys that I will forever cherish. Stories told of make believe lands, far far away where animals talk and dinosaurs fly. Stories told of my childhood, how we found Bailey and how mommy and daddy met. Many nights I have fallen asleep in bed with a child wrapped in my arms. Just the thought of those nights makes me smile. We have had camp outs on the floor, sheets hung from ceilings to build our castles and night time stars glowing on walls. We have sung songs in this room, danced like leaves in winter wind and jumped on beds with giggles flying all around.

It is time to take these memories, pack them in our boxes, tuck them in our bags and move them to a new home where we will add more and more to our collection.
