Butter and pigs

A friend asked me to make a butter bell, which is comprised of an outer jar and an inner “bell”. Smash a stick or two of butter in the bell part (most places I read said to leave 1/2″ or so of space at the bottom of the bell), and fill the outer jar with about an inch of water. When you put the bell in the jar, the water forms a seal and keeps the butter fresh, without being refrigerated. There are many opinions on the best way to “operate” a butter bell.

It’s a girl! New piggy bank special-made for little Emma.

Woodworking! After building a couple of doors this past summer, I thought it would be fun to dabble in woodworking. After purchasing a few books on using the outdoors to create indoor art, and then buying a Dremel Trio, it is now time to experiment.

Hopefully this spring we will get the shop set up in one of our outbuildings, but for now, some of the power tools are hanging out in the studio. Setting up a couple of Black and Decker Workmate benches and a couple of tables, I now have a place to cut big pieces of wood into little pieces.

After a couple extra trips to the hardware store for more glue, the floor is completed, the studio is cleaned, and new projects are in the works!

Finally getting that floor fixed

What better way to spend a snow day than laying a tile floor? After one of the machines we were moving out tipped over and gouged a nice sized hole in the floor, I pulled up (mostly in pieces) the tile around the damaged area. Turns out that section of floor had been replaced before with a 4×8 sheet of plywood. Thinking we would have to replace the entire 4×8 sheet, I pulled the tile around that plywood. Well, we only had to replace 1/2 of it, so I was left with some more tile to replace.

The old tile in the center had some machinery on it, so there are rust and oil spots, but my kickwheel will go over it, so no big deal. I’m not that interested in replacing perfectly good tile, anyways!

Next is dealing with the replaced sub-floor. Since it is not quite the same material as the existing sub-floor, step one is to fill the seam between the replaced piece and the rest of the sub-floor. The grey stuff around the outside is the filler. That takes 3 days to cure, so the studio is “off limits” to everyone but me – no pressure can be put on the sub-floor until the filler has dried. If anyone is going to break it, I want it to be me!

It should be cured and ready to go on Thursday – then I’ll put down floor leveler, let it dry, and finally lay the last 20 pieces of tile. If all goes well, by next week the floor will be done!
