3 Pieces of Advice vs 20 Years of Salary"
A very poor newly wedded, young couple lived in a small
farm. One day the husband made the following proposal to
his wife:
- Honey, I will leave the house: I will travel faraway, get a job
and work hard in order to come back and give you the
comfortable life that you deserve. I do not know how long I
will stay away, I only ask one thing, please wait for me, and
while I am away, you should be faithful to me, because I will
be faithful to you.
So the young man left. He walked many days until he found
a farmer who was in need of someone to help him. The
young man offered his services. He was accepted.
Therefore he discussed the terms with his boss:
- Let me work for as long as I want and when I think I
should go home, please relieve me of my duties. I do not
want to receive my salary. I ask you to save it for me, until
the day I leave. The day I decide to go, please give me the
money and I will go my way.
They agreed on that. So, the young man worked for twenty
years without holiday and without rest. After twenty years,
he came to his boss and said:
- Boss, I want my money, because I am returning to my
home.
The boss replied:
- All right, after all, I made a deal with you and I will stick to
it. However, before you go I want to offer you something
new: I will give you all your money and send you away; or I
will give you 3 pieces of advice and send you away. If I give
you the money, I do not give you the 3 pieces of advice. And
if I give you the 3 pieces of advice, I will not give you the
money. Now, go to your room and think about your answer.
He thought for two days. Then he went to the boss and told
him:
- I want the 3 pieces of advice.
The boss stressed again:
- If I give you the 3 pieces of advice, I will not give you the
money.
And the man replied:
- I want the 3 pieces of advice.
The boss then told him:
- No. 1: Never take shortcuts in your life, shorter and
unknown paths can cost your life.
- No. 2: Never be too curious, for curiosity towards evil can
be deadly.
- No. 3: Never make decisions in moments of anger or pain,
because when you repent, it could be too late.
After giving these 3 pieces of advice, the boss said to him:
- Here, you have 3 loaves of bread, 2 are for you to eat
during the journey and the last is for you to eat with your
wife when you get home.
So, the man went his way, after twenty years away from
home and from his wife, whom he loved so much.
After the first day of travel, he found a man who greeted him
and asked:
- Where are you going?
He replied:
- To a distant place which is about 20 days away if I
continue walking.
The man said to him:
- Ol' boy, this path is too long! I know a shortcut that is very
safe and you will arrive in 5 days only.
The man began to follow the path suggested until he
remembered the first piece of advice. Then, he returned and
followed the long path. Days later he learned that the
shortcut led to an ambush.
After a few more days of travel, he found an inn by the
roadside, where he could rest. He paid for a room and after
taking a bath he lay down to sleep.
During the night he woke up as he heard a terrifying
scream. He rose to his feet and went to the door to check
what happened. As he was opening the door, he
remembered the second piece of advice. Therefore he
returned, lay down again and slept.
At dawn, after breakfast, the owner of the lodging asked him
if he had not heard the scream at night. He affirmed that he
heard. Then, the host said:
- Were you not curious to see what happened?
And he replied:
- No, I was not.
Then the host said:
- You are the first guest to leave this inn alive. My neighbour
is completely crazy. He usually shouts at night to call
someone’s attention. When some of the guests come out,
he kills them and buries their bodies in the backyard.
The man continued his long journey, eager to arrive soon.
After many days and nights walking, he was very tired, but
he finally saw his house far away.
It was night. He saw some light coming out of the window of
his house and was able to see the silhouette of his wife. But
he also saw that she was not alone. He came closer and
saw there was a man with her. She softly caressed his hair.
When he saw that scene, his heart was filled with hatred and
bitterness. He decided to rush at and kill them both
mercilessly. However, he took a deep breath and he
remembered the third piece of advice.
Then he stopped, reflected and decided to sleep outside that
night. He slept in the midst of the bushes, determined to
make a decision the next day. At dawn, he was calmer and
thought:
- I will not kill my wife and her lover. I am going back to my
boss to ask him to take me back. But before I go, I want to
tell my wife that I have always been faithful to her.
He went to the front door and knocked. When his wife
opened the door and recognized him, she cried and
embraced him warmly. He tried to push her away, but he
was not able. Then, with tears in his eyes he told her:
- I was faithful to you but you betrayed me.
She was shocked, so she replied:
- How did I betray you? I have never betrayed you. I waited
patiently for you for twenty good years.
Then he asked:
- How about the man that you were caressing yesterday?
And she said:
- That man is your son. When you left, I discovered I was
pregnant. Today he is twenty years old.
Hearing that, the man asked her forgiveness. He met and
hugged his son. Then he told them all the things he had
experienced while away. Meanwhile, his wife prepared some
coffee for them to eat together, the last bread given by his
boss.
After a prayer of thanksgiving, he broke the bread. When he
looked at it, he found all his money inside. In fact, there was
even more than the right payment for his twenty years of
dedication and hard work.

The Tragedy of Small Expectations (and the trap of false dreams)
Ask a hundred students at Harvard Business School if they expect to be up for a good job when they graduate, and all of them will say "yes."
Ask a bright ten-year old girl if she expects to have a chance at a career as a mathematician, and the odds are she's already been brainwashed into saying "no."
Expectations aren't guarantees, but expectations give us the chance to act as if, to trade now for later, to invest in hard work and productive dreaming on our way to making an impact.
Expectations work for two reasons. First, they give us the enthusiasm and confidence to do hard work. Second, like a placebo, they subtly change our attitude, and give us the resilience to make it through the rough spots. "Eventually" gives us the energy to persist.
When our culture (our media, our power structures, our society) says, "people who look like you shouldn't expect to have a life like that," we're stealing. Stealing from people capable of achieving more, and stealing from our community as well. How can our society (that's us) say, "we don't expect you to graduate, we don't expect you to lead, we don't expect you to be trusted to make a difference?"
When people are pushed to exchange their passion and their effort for the false solace of giving up and lowering their expectations, we all lose. And (almost as bad, in the other direction) when they substitute the reality of expectations for the quixotic quest of impossibly large, unrealistic dreams, we lose as well. Disneyesque dreams are a form of hiding, because Prince Charming isn't coming any time soon.
Expectations are not guarantees. Positive thinking doesn't guarantee results, all it offers is something better than negative thinking.
Expectations that don't match what's possible are merely false dreams. And expectations that are too small are a waste. We need teachers and leaders and peers who will help us dig in deeper and discover what's possible, so we can push to make it likely.
Expectations aren't wishes, they're part of a straightforward equation: This work plus that effort plus these bridges lead to a likelihood of that outcome. It's a clear-eyed awareness of what's possible combined with a community that shares your vision.
It's easy to manipulate the language of expectations and turn it into a bootstrapping, you're-on-your-own sort of abandonment. But expectation is contagious. Expectation comes from our culture. And most of all, expectation depends on support—persistent, generous support to create a place where leaping can occur.
There are limits all around us, stereotypes, unlevel playing fields, systemic challenges where there should be support instead. A quiet but intensely corrosive impact these injustices create is in the minds of the disenfranchised, in their perception of what is possible.
The mirror we hold up to the person next to us is one of the most important pictures she will ever see.
If we can help just one person refuse to accept false limits, we've made a contribution. If we can give people the education, the tools and the access they need to reach their goals, we've made a difference. And if we can help erase the systemic stories, traditions and policies that push entire groups of people to insist on less, we've changed the world.

10 Truths We Forget Too Easily

It’s surprising how easy it is to lose sight of the important things in life. Busy schedules and weekly routines have a tendency to put the brain on autopilot.

Some of life’s essential truths need repeating. Keep this list handy and give it a read any time you need a boost.

1. BEING BUSY DOES NOT EQUAL BEING PRODUCTIVE

Look at everyone around you. They all seem so busy—running from meeting to meeting and firing off emails. Yet how many of them are really producing, really succeeding at a high level?

Success doesn’t come from movement and activity. It comes from focus—from ensuring that your time is used efficiently and productively.

You get the same number of hours in the day as everyone else. Use yours wisely. After all, you’re the product of your output, not your effort. Make certain your efforts are dedicated to tasks that get results.

2. GREAT SUCCESS IS OFTEN PRECEDED BY FAILURE

You will never experience true success until you learn to embrace failure. Your mistakes pave the way for you to succeed by revealing when you’re on the wrong path.

The biggest breakthroughs typically come when you’re feeling the most frustrated and the most stuck. It’s this frustration that forces you to think differently, to look outside the box and see the solution that you’ve been missing.

Success takes patience and the ability to maintain a good attitude even while suffering for what you believe in.

3. FEAR IS THE #1 SOURCE OF REGRET

When it’s all said and done, you will lament the chances you didn’t take far more than you will your failures. Don’t be afraid to take risks.

I often hear people say, “What’s the worst thing that can happen to you? Will it kill you?” Yet, death isn’t the worst thing that can happen to you.

The worst thing that can happen to you is allowing yourself to die inside while you’re still alive.

4. YOUR SELF-WORTH MUST COME FROM WITHIN

When your sense of pleasure and satisfaction are derived from comparing yourself to others, you are no longer the master of your own destiny. When you feel good about something that you’ve done, don’t allow anyone’s opinions or accomplishments to take that away from you.

While it’s impossible to turn off your reactions to what others think of you, you don’t have to compare yourself to others, and you can always take people’s opinions with a grain of salt. That way, no matter what other people are thinking or doing, your self-worth comes from within. Regardless of what people think of you at any particular moment, one thing is certain—you’re never as good or bad as they say you are.

5. YOU'RE ONLY AS GOOD AS THOSE YOU ASSOCIATE WITH

You should strive to surround yourself with people who inspire you, people who make you want to be better. And you probably do. But what about the people who drag you down? Why do you allow them to be a part of your life?

Anyone who makes you feel worthless, anxious, or uninspired is wasting your time and, quite possibly, making you more like them. Life is too short to associate with people like this. Cut them loose.

6. LIFE IS SHORT

None of us are guaranteed a tomorrow. Yet, when someone dies unexpectedly it causes us to take stock of our own life: what’s really important, how we spend our time, and how we treat other people.

Loss is a raw, visceral reminder of the frailty of life. It shouldn’t be.

Remind yourself every morning when you wake up that each day is a gift and you’re bound to make the most of the blessing you’ve been given. The moment you start acting like life is a blessing is the moment it will start acting like one.

After all, a great day begins with a great mindset.

7. YOU DON'T HAVE TO WAIT FOR AN APOLOGY TO FORGIVE

Life goes a lot smoother once you let go of grudges and forgive even those who never said they were sorry. Grudges let negative events from your past ruin today’s happiness. Hate and anger are emotional parasites that destroy your joy in life.

The negative emotions that come with holding on to a grudge create a stress response in your body, and holding on to stress can have devastating health consequences. Researchers at Emory University have shown that holding on to stress contributes to high blood pressure and heart disease.

When you forgive someone, it doesn’t condone their actions; it simply frees you from being their eternal victim.

8. YOU'RE LIVING THE LIFE YOU'VE CREATED

You are not a victim of circumstance. No one can force you to make decisions and take actions that run contrary to your values and aspirations.

The circumstances you’re living in today are your own—you created them. Likewise, your future is entirely up to you. If you’re feeling stuck, it’s probably because you’re afraid to take the risks necessary to achieve your goals and live your dreams.

When it’s time to take action, remember that it’s always better to be at the bottom of the ladder you want to climb than at the top of one you don’t.

9. LIVE IN THE MOMENT

You can’t reach your full potential until you learn to live your life in the present.

No amount of guilt can change the past, and no amount of anxiety can change the future. It’s impossible to be happy if you’re constantly somewhere else, unable to fully embrace the reality (good or bad) of this very moment.

To help yourself live in the moment, you must do two things:

1) Accept your past. If you don’t make peace with your past, it will never leave you and, in doing so, it will create your future.

2) Accept the uncertainty of the future. Worry has no place in the here and now. As Mark Twain once said, “Worrying is like paying a debt you don’t owe.”

10. CHANGE IS INEVITABLE - EMBRACE IT

Only when you embrace change can you find the good in it. You need to have an open mind and open arms if you’re going to recognize, and capitalize on, the opportunities that change creates.

You’re bound to fail when you keep doing the same things you always have in the hope that ignoring change will make it go away.

After all, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

Life doesn’t stop for anyone. When things are going well, appreciate them and enjoy them, as they are bound to change. If you are always searching for something more, something better, that you think is going to make you happy, you’ll never be present enough to enjoy the great moments before they’re gone.

Merchandise, merchants and slaves! I want more money, what do I sell since stealing is not an option? This is a pressing issue mostly decorated in order not to injure an average man's humble ego. The rich will get richer, the poor will certainly grow in poverty. Some principles are certain in this unfair life. Law of sowing and reaping for instance. God could bless your plants so richly that your harvest become overwhelming, but if you fail to plant in the first place, what do you plan to harvest? It is called business. You put in human and material resources then expect profits over time. Much emphasis is always laid on capital to start a business with less attention given to how to sustain such business.

People who wait for grants or donations to start business actually should be into charity. Forgive me for being excessively blunt here, I mean no insult on anyone! Jesus Christ fed five thousand men excluding women and children with 12 baskets as left over. The bread and fishes did not rain from the skies. Some smart boy among the crowd was wise enough to keep something behind in case of the unexpected. He provided something for the Lord to multiply. Christ was also invested into the world of sinners, see millions of believers God has gained through the death of His son. God made a sacrifice. He gave what was precious to him, He is almighty, He could have done otherwise. But a thorough lesson is obvious here, nothing ventures in nothing comes out.

As a salary earner, I understand what it feels like to work so hard but get something too small to compensate for the hard labour. It a sour feeling of being cheated on, being used, being abused. I do not feel frustrated because I have learnt that salaries are not meant to make me wealthy. Until I start paying myself, I might not get what I really, really deserve for my work. My argument here is am I good enough for business if I actually cannot raise enough funds to float a business? If God bless me today, is it not wise to just invest somewhere and keep working to get paid? At least, my salary will continue and my money will be working for me elsewhere.

This is an open piece, contributions are anticipated. It is a piece of my mind, what I see looking through my lens. There comes a piece of advise to similar minds that business is truly not meant for charity-inclined folks. You could complain bitterly about excesses of employers, the risks, blood pressure, heartaches, headaches, sleepless nights that come with sustaining business is worth your sincere second thought. It is only charity that is legally allowed to get something for nothing. This informs my choice of word for describing those who wait for wealthy uncles, rich partners, good-samaritan citizens to donate towards starting their businesses.

Money makes the world go round, though good idea is worth more more than money. Proof? The chemist that originally invented the formula for making coca-cola (Coke) sold the idea for ridiculous FIVE DOLLARS. Imagine the tonnes of millions the five-dollar worth of idea has generated many years after.

Also, something deceptive about having business ideas is thinking only you can see that opportunity. I'm sorry to inform you that thousands have thought about it too. It is either they cannot fight hard enough to get it started or have stopped trying based on failed attempts. You can think big, dream big, dream is cheaper than satchet water, just sleep or close your eyes, dream will come. Getting out your dreams is the real challenge. Not the bus-stop between Orita and Molete in Ibadan, rather the hustle itself. Successfully turning you idea into money-making machine is the big deal.

I look forward to a society of more self-made business moguls and tycoons, a Nigeria where there will be more CEO's than job applicants. I hope to find more Nigerians taking responsibility for their survival, more Nigerians engineering their own financial breakthroughs, that is the purpose of my outcry. If you get bonus or win lotto to start business today, what if the business crumbles later? It is normal, businesses face hardships like human beings. How will you recover your business in the face of political disturbance or harsh economic climate or sharp market decline? That balls you do not have today to hustle for start-up capital, where will you get it from when you are already familiar with luxury? The discipline, courage and persistence needed to get tougher than tough future occurrences is needed from the idea conception stage. It will grow in you along with implementation of your idea. When business hard times come calling, you that work hard to start can do it again, again and again.
