A Terminal Server is a server that allows employees to receive a desktop screen located at the main office from any location with internet access. It is as if the employee is sitting in the office but they could be sitting on a beach in Florida taking in the sun and warm weather.

For example, you have some applications such as ACT and QuickBooks that you need some employees to have access to but they do not work at the office. ACT and QuickBooks get installed on the Terminal Server. When employees log in from home they receive a desktop screen that is running on the Terminal Server. That desktop screen is located at the office with full access to the file server that houses the ACT and QuickBooks data. All transactions are still taking place in the office so the applications run very fast.

A Terminal Server used along with a Microsoft Small Business Server is a good replacement for VPN. VPN’s are typically slow because applications like ACT and QuickBooks actually transmit the data through the internet via the VPN. Instead, the Terminal Server keeps the data on the local network at the office. Opening documents on the Terminal Server will take seconds instead of minutes like with a VPN.

Another benefit to a Terminal Server is that the software that employees use is only installed on one computer, the Terminal Server. This makes maintenance and upgrades much easier and more cost effective. We only need to patch and upgrade the software application on the Terminal Server, not each individual computer.

                With the endless number of online hoaxes, viruses, phishing scams, and other threats, many people are suspicious of ANY online program that shares their personal information with the rest of the world – and rightfully so. However, cookies are not the menacing tools of surveillance many people believe them to be, and in most cases, they do more good than evil. Unlike viruses and spyware, cookies are not programs that allow unauthorized access to your computer. They are simple text files that, on their own, can’t do much of anything.

                Most cookies are designed to enhance web browsing. On a shopping site, they can store a list of items you’ve selected to buy as you browse through an online catalogue. They can also remember your web browsing preferences whenever you revisit a particular site.

The Type of Internet Cookie you DO Want to Block
                Most web browsers allow cookies to be read only by the web site to which they belong to prevent other sites from tracking your online activities. However, some advertisers will put cookies on your computer as a way to recognize your computer at other web sites associated with that advertiser. These are called “third party cookies” and they allow advertisers to track your online activities.

                Blocking third party cookies is easy. In Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu and then choose Internet Options. Then click the Privacy tab and then the Advanced button. Make sure the checkbox Override automatic cookie handling is checked. You’ll see options for first party and third party cookies. In the third party cookie options, select Block. Then click OK.

                Of course, you should always use a firewall, an up to date antivirus program and anti-spyware software to protect yourself from REAL online threats.
