Sony Computer Entertainment Inc, today announced that the sales of the PlayStation�Vita (PS Vita) portable entertainment system reached over 1.2 million units worldwide as of February 26, 2012. PS Vita experienced an initial burst of momentum when it launched on December 17, 2011 in Japan followed by Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea. Newly launched in North and Latin America, Europe and PAL territories as well as in Singapore on February 22, 2012, sales have exceeded expectations surpassing over 1.2 million units worldwide, firmly establishing PS Vita as the must-have portable entertainment device across the world. Software sales across the globe have surpassed 2.0 million units at both retail and on PlayStation�Network.

More than 20 years after its first appearance on Amstrad CPC, Anuman Interactive announces the return of the well-known video game "Barbarian" (under the Micro�ds - Games for All label) on PC, Mac, iPhone and iPad.

"Barbarian: The Ultimate Warrior" (also known as "Death Sword"), which first appeared on Amstrad CPC in 1987, owes its popularity to the hero’s vast array of moves available, a storyline inspired by the film "Conan the Barbarian”, the player’s ability to decapitate his opponent, putting a fast and furious end to combat, and above all, to the silhouette of British top model Maria Whittaker, whose curves kindled the imagination of a generation of gamers.

Today, publisher Anuman Interactive launches its new Remake/Retro-Gaming series and introduces "Barbarian – The Death Sword", a 3D combat/adventure title, inspired by the original Barbarian game. The objective of this new saga is straightforward: to give a wide variety of players the chance to rediscover the atmosphere and thrills that were available in the original version, using today's technology and game platforms.

As to how the game is organized, "Barbarian – The Death Sword" offers four different game modes: Story, Arcade, Survival and Multiplayer.

As expected, in Story mode, the adventure unwinds as the player begins a journey in the search of the beautiful Princess Mariana, kidnapped by evil wizard Drax. During his journey around the world (represented by 5 different combat arenas), various enemies under Drax's command appear along the Barbarian’s route to try to stop him from completing his quest.

Just as in the original version, the player has a wide choice of attack and defense moves at his disposal during combat (rolling, kicking, head-butting etc.), including the famous decapitation move, which requires excellent timing and involves a certain amount of risk, to end the battle in one single sword stroke. New features in "Barbarian – The Death Sword" include a Rage Gauge, which fills up according to the damage inflicted or received (whilst in guard position). This gauge allows players to perform special blows, which vary in strength, such as a shoulder barge to knock the opponent to the ground, a deadly sequence of moves or a crushing surprise attack. Another interesting feature is the variety of natural obstacles (bats, lava flows, lightning bolts etc.) present in the combat arenas, which can injure both the player and his opponent.

Two difficulty levels are available in Story mode: Normal and Hardcore (for more seasoned players). A third, even more advanced level (Death Sword), will be released soon as an update.

Quick games are available to play in Arcade mode, where players come up against randomly selected opponents until they get to the big boss, and in Survival mode, where the warrior’s endurance is tested through a series of battles. This means that the player keeps the same life bar during the whole series of battles, and any damage received in each individual battle is carried over to the next one.
Finally, the Multiplayer mode allows two players to battle one other via a local network, using one of the nine available fighters. This is a cross-platform mode, allowing, for example, PC players to fight against iPad users who also have the game.

Additionally, in order to make the game more accessible to younger players, there is the option to make confrontations less violent and gore-free, and there are around twenty trophies to be unlocked on iPhone/iPad, thanks to Apple's Game Center.

"Barbarian - The Death Sword" is available from February 27th , 2012 on iPhone/iPad in EFIGS (English, French, Italian, German and Spanish). PC and Mac will be released in few weeks.

Players Uncover the Mystery Behind Wish Park and Rescue Missing Pok�mon

Today's launch of the new PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond game for the Wii console invites players on a new Pokémon adventure. Pikachu and his Pals - Oshawott, Snivy and Tepig - must work together to discover the secrets of the mysterious Wish Park and save missing Pokémon. Players can play as any one of these four Pokémon, and because each Pokémon has its own unique abilities, they'll need to switch between them to overcome various obstacles along the way. Pikachu will encounter new Pokémon and reunite with old favorites in a colorful array of new areas and environments.

"The imaginative fun of the world of Pokémon really comes to life in PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "The game offers fun challenges and adventures for Pokémon fans of all experience levels."

As they play through the game, players will also experience fun activities, battles and Attractions. In activities, Pikachu and his Pals can befriend other Pokémon by playing games such as chase and hide-and-seek, and even battles. Battles let players go head-to-head against powerful Pokémon. Attractions range from dancing to flying through space in a race around the stars. Family members and friends can all join in the fun, as one to four players can participate in Attractions, as long as each player has his or her own Wii Remote controller, which is sold separately.

Interactive Entertainment announces Scribble Pics, a new screenshot sharing feature for its top-ranked Scribblenauts Remix App, further expanding the groundbreaking Scribblenauts franchise's innovative game play. Using the new in-game feature, players can easily snap a screenshot of their wildly creative gameplay and post it to their Facebook page or Twitter feed.

In Scribblenauts Remix, created by 5TH Cell and developed by Iron Galaxy, gamers write any word, modify it with adjectives and bring that object to life to solve puzzles. To use the screenshot sharing feature, players simply tap on the keyboard camera icon to capture a screenshot and can post it to their Facebook page or Twitter feed all within the game. Games and interactive entertainment trade body, UKIE, has today published its Access to Finance paper as part of its pre-budget submission to government. Many interactive entertainment businesses in the UK are struggling to develop and grow through not being able access sources of finance. UKIE's Access to Finance Paper outlines how the government can help support the games industry financially and therefore help to give it the level playing field that it needs to grow in the UK.

KIE’s Access to Finance paper calls on government to explore new ways of making finance available for the games and interactive entertainment industry, such as: making crowd funding operate efficiently in the UK; extending the public service remit to include video games; and offering tax benefits linked to skills. The paper also calls on government to review existing sources of finance to make them better suited to the needs of the games industry, as well as fully supporting the call for the introduction of a tax break for video games development.

UKIE is also using its Access to Finance paper to call on government to support the development of a new Computer Science and Information and Communications Technology teaching infrastructure through the funding of Initial Teacher Training and Continuing Professional Development for teachers.

The full recommendations made in UKIE’s Access to Finance Paper are:

Improve the UK’s current regulatory environment to allow investors, content producers and crowd funding platforms to take maximum advantage of crowd funding. (More detail on this proposal can be found in UKIE’s separate Crowd Funding Report – published last week and available here).
UKIE continues to call on the government to introduce a tax break for video games development, along similar lines to the film tax relief, and fully supports fellow industry body, TIGA’s, Tax Breaks proposal.
Change the rules governing the use of Venture Capital Trusts and Enterprise Investment Schemes to make them better suited for use in connection with the games and interactive entertainment industry.
Change the rules regarding Seed Enterprise Investment Schemes to make it truly effective.
Introduce a copyright box to incentivise IP creation and exploitation.
Further clarify and reform the R&D tax credit system to make it easier for companies in the games and interactive entertainment industries to benefit.
Link tax benefits to skills, possibly by linking to apprenticeships.
Support the development of a new Computer Science and Information and Communications Technology teaching infrastructure through the funding of Initial Teacher Training and Continuing Professional Development for teachers Consider a further extension to the public-service remit so that it includes support for relevant games and interactive entertainment products and services.
Extend the public-service remit to include interactive entertainment products and services.
Continue to help provide access to finance through channels such as prototype funds.

Bumbling over the finish line with barely a bronze

In a world where humans scavenge for titbits of gossip about massive disputes, it's nice that gaming's original rivals have made peace with one another and get down to some friendly javelin chucking. Since 2008, a classic if somewhat mismatched duo have battled it out to steal Olympic golds from more humanoid noses. Now, with our very own Olympic event lined up, the world's most famous plumber and fastest hedgehog compete once again in Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Gamings most famous colourful casts aren't just here for vanity's sake though. There is a story mode for the lonely to dig into, possibly to add a nice narrative depth to an unusual crossover event, possibly to add some form of surreal satire to Beijing's weather crisis four years ago. Angered by their lack of invites to the Olympic opening ceremony, Bowser and Dr Eggman unleash a mysterious fog upon the whole country in a bid to stop the games from even happening. Even worse, mist based clones of the competitors are attempting to take out the real ones. Conveniently though, they're the kind of foggy bad guys who seem to dissipate once they've been beaten at Judo or Synchronised Swimming, so the team of gaming icons attempt to clear up the country before it's too late. Blimming heck, why am I trying to attempt to justify the presence of the plot? It's clear that it's simply excessive and frankly unnecessary padding. Characters take eons to figure out who's behind the misty evil, everybody constantly recounts facts that have been heavily implied ages ago and the eventual cliffhanger comes down to a tense discussion on admin errors. Get stuck straight into the selection of mini-games and you're guaranteed to have more fun, though the selection of 50 trials are a rather mixed bag. It's nice that Mario & Sonic utilises many of the 3DS's features to its advantage, and when the game takes the opportunity to use the system to its advantage, it does so well. The hammer throw has you spinning the whole console around like you're willing to snap your own wrists off before...letting go of the shoulder buttons (not letting the console fly). Setting off in Sailing events forces you to steer in conventional formats with the circle pad whilst blowing into the microphone to force wind upon the sails. Some concepts are weird and certain to get you in heaps of trouble on public transport, like having to time shouts into the microphone whilst weightlifting. However, it's respectable how the game takes the consoles hardware and runs with it in some cases.

However, the clever controls can't get over the fact that a majority of the games here just feel shallow, and as such their inclusion just feels questionable. The 100m sprint may evoke simple mindless button mashing, but it fits. Attempt to partake in the Marathon mini-game, however, and the event will be dumbed down into a painfully slow water bottle pick-'em-up segment. Attempting Badminton on your own simplifies the game down further, giving you a rather dull event where you must press A if you think the shuttlecock will land in the court, or dodge with the control pad should it land outside. Such tame inclusions simply dull what great games could've been included here. Although you may play one game for ages trying to nab golds from it, others will simply be played once and then swept under the carpet. Though simplicity makes the game very accessible, it also patronises most of the sports on offer so much that it makes them simply dull to sit through. Gather up a few clear favourite games and connect up with some pals and you're in for some laughs. No matter how old you are, it's easy to become competitively absorbed when you're intently focused on your best mini-game of the bunch. You can also create your own tournament style 'Medleys' to send to friends and see who reigns supreme. However, it still seems rather lacklustre, especially to its home console counterpart. A minority will be picked out as clear multiplayer favourites, and such a small collection will eventually grind with minimal means to spice them up. The Wii version brags fun party modes, and its a shame that such inclusions couldn't be made for the 3DS instalment, resting entirely on the mixed bag of events. Though most references to our capital are astonishingly blatant tourist propaganda, London has never looked so lush. When not doused in fog, you'll be visiting some wonderfully recreated locales that may be basic in mimicry but look gloriously colourful nonetheless. The 3D effects may not bedazzle, but with the amount of movement you'll be forced to partake in with your console, it's probably a good thing it discourages eye popping play to discourage motion sickness. I only ever noticed text boxes leaping out at my pupils, but the games vibrant setting and characters do enough to add a suitably colourful flair. The game's lucky I didn't give it a low graphical rating thanks to its inclusion of the virtually epileptic Olympic logo. Mario & Sonic At The London 2012 Olympic Games is a small package of mild fun that seems to rest its laurels on the popularity of its cast than its activities. Unfortunately, the lack of modes to really sink your teeth into along with a majority of tame titles to compete in means it falls short of its other Olympic attempts. Kids will most likely still love this crossover, shining in charms and bundled with hundreds of collectable badges that will keep them at least engaged. If you're an avid Track 'N' Field adult fan, you might even steal away the 3DS in a bid to hoard every gold medal on offer. But with a collection of games that lack any addictive depth to them, it certainly won't keep you occupied till the Olympics roll our way.

Review: Alan Wake (PC)

The 360 hit comes to PC, finally......

The Good: Excellent creepy survival horror; Looks awesome, and has great atmosphere; Gripping story with nice twists and turns; Good, yet simple, combat mechanics; Lots of little extras, such as collectibles, bonus chapters, and expanded story material
The Bad: Not massively groundbreaking; a little short, and lacking in any major replayability; leeches some ideas from other classic titles

Alan Wake comes to PC, with Remedy finally fulfilling the ultimate broken promise: often delayed, repeatedly cancelled, a PC version of the Xbox classic that flew under the radar of so many. For those who bemoan the lack of quality survival horror titles, take heed: Alan Wake is amazing, and if you don't get on and buy it, you'll be missing what is possibly the best shock-fear title since Silent Hill 2. Quick overview then (I'm being particularly brief on purpose here, as the fun is letting the tale tell itself): Alan Wake has a problem - he's a celebrity author with epic writers block, and he's getting depressed about it. His wife, Alice, takes him on a holiday to an idyllic town in remote Washington, hoping to not only kickstart his writing, but spend some quality time together in a peaceful cabin,. However, the town hides a secret that comes to haunt Alan, threatening his wife and leaving him with gaps in his memory. And if that wasn't enough, he keeps finding pages from a book he doesn't remember writing, predicting his fate..... So, in short, its a thoroughly modern classic: great story marries up with inventive gameplay to create something quite special, with Alan fighting forces of darkness - not Justin Hawkins, but a malevolent dark shadow with turns everything it touches into an insane evil. Luckily, it hates light, and combat revolves around torches, flares and flashbangs helping Alan dispel the shades before simply blowing things away with a gun. The weapons aren't varied, but the fun to be had with them is: the game mixes up enemy types and attack patterns in a way that keeps the gameplay fresh throughout the main twelve hours of campaign. The visuals are worth a shout too: everything centres around the town of Bright Falls and it's surrounding countryside, and is generally a lot of broken down towns, sweeping mountains and lakes, and the ever present woods, usually hiding treasures in abandoned lodges and ranger huts. You'll certainly get the most out of it by exploring, as a lot of the filler is hidden in radios, TVs and nooks and crannies: the quirky tales of "Night Springs" on the TVs, for example, offer some great short Twilight Zone-style takes, and there's some great nods to the seminal Twin Peaks as well. It's really good stuff indeed. Also, the sound is immense: not only is the voice acting perfect for the tone of the game, the sound effects are the first truly creepy noises in some time, adding some real depth to the experience. Pop on your headphones and crank it up, cos you'll also get the benefits of the fabulous soundtrack too. Adding to the "TV horror serial" sensibility is the fact the game is broken up into chapters: each one ends on a cliffhanger, running a closing track (with no subtitles, weirdly), before launching into the next episode with a recap and tole shot. It works, too, adding more flavour to the perception of a serial show with all the quirks and jinks associated.

Also, as an added extra, the PC version features two episodes of DLC, previously sold separately on XBLA; despite their relative brevity and good atmosphere, both are a mere sideshow to the main story, instead operating at a tangent to the main tales closing ideas. It's a nice extra, sure, but doesn't really do much to the meat of the adventure. So, where are the problems, then? Well, overall it's a little short: I'd definitely advise hunting out all the little secrets and extras in each level, but even with this you are talking around twelve hours of game play with limited replay. There's no multiplayer, no real extras (apart from a few extra hidden pages in the single player Nightmare mode), and aside from lots of "hunt the treasure" odds and ends such as coffee flasks, there's not really enough to bring you back regularly. It's also a little generic, although that's really a genre issue, not specific to Alan Wake solely. But, in the same way I watch Twin Peaks nearly every year, I know I will go back; the quirks and intrigues of this title are a rarity nowadays, with small hints and nods to all kinds of pop culture (there's even some in-jokes hidden in QR codes within the game itself), and a great atmosphere lacking in so many cookie-cutter titles of recent years. Wake as a character is brilliant, with his own hidden demons and problems, and the tale does a great job of catching you out with red herrings and truly unexpected plot twists. So, horror fans, I leave you with this: buy this game. You'll love it, and it will hopefully encourage more of the same quality on offer here. Sure, it's a bit lacking in a long life, but it's the nature of the genre - what I can promise is that you won't forget it for some time......
