Why does this story keep getting rejected? "The best stories speak as truthfully as the trees." Great. A mystic.

The Paris Review: You speak in one of your books of “the dictation,” of being almost
possessed, of having this stuff spilling out of you. How does this
process work?

Henry Miller: Well, it happens only at rare intervals, this dictation. Someone
takes over and you just copy out what is being said. It occurred most
strongly with the work on D. H. Lawrence, a work I never finished—and
that was because I had to do too much thinking. You see, I think it’s
bad to think. A writer shouldn’t think much.

-The Paris Review, Issue 28, Summer 1962

I wrote a long post about what nonsense Miller's talking here; about how essential it is for writers to think and about how to think. I erased it. I needed to think more about thinking. I rewrote the post and erased it again. Thinking's an essential part of how I get my work together.

Miller's not wrong. But why "don't think" "get possessed" seemed like bad advice to me is because I'm trying to write something about writing that will help writers do work and discussing structured ways of thinking about writing is good for a blog post.

But also: don't think. Write.

We're ears-deep in resources to help us think: applications like Scrivener or mind maps, magazines and books and e-books, bloggers and tweeters, bloggers who post about good blogs and good tweeters. Most are really good or nice or at least helpful.

Here are other unpractical things Miller says in the interview that feel more worthwhile than any "Lifehacking" writing tip I've read recently. . . that's what I'm feeling today anyway:

"most writing is done away from the typewriter, away from the desk. I’d
say it occurs in the quiet, silent moments, while you’re walking or
shaving or playing a game"

" What is an artist? He’s a man who has antennae, who knows how to hook
up to the currents which are in the atmosphere, in the cosmos"

"To put down merely what one is conscious of means nothing, really, gets
one nowhere. Anybody can do that with a little practice, anybody can
become that kind of writer."

" I believe in saying the truth, coming out with it cold, shocking if
necessary, not disguising it. In other words, obscenity is a cleansing
process."

"Does [the author] know his own work as well as he imagines? I rather think not. I
rather think he’s like a medium who, when he comes out of his trance, is
amazed at what he’s said and done."

Paris Reivew: What about envying other writers?

Jonathan Lethem: Every human life includes moments of rage at unrecognition. We’re all injustice collectors. But that’s not the truth of any situation. I don’t mean to pretend that those bad feelings don’t exist. I know them intimately; they’re daily friends. But once you give them their name and shape, they’re like a set of really lousy cats living in your house. You kick them out of the way to get to where you’re going. . . . Would I want to be the only writer? No. Would I want to be the best? Well, that’s a lie, there’s no best. So there’s nothing to want.

-The Paris Review, Issue 166, Summer 2003

The process of writing (idea having, words putting down, words cutting out, query letter writing, etc) is itself taxing. The existence of other writers, however, is taxing the way a star-filled sky can be if you think about how little you matter to it.

Lethem's questions about being the only or the best writer make him seem chill but we're also not flipping marooons. "There's nothing to want?" C'mon, bro!

It may be realistic to not want to be the only writer (imagine the grammar!). And it may be psychologically pragmatic to not stress about being the best writer. But we don't send out dozens of query letters without wanting something and part of wanting means you've got a smidgen of envy.

I write because I want the feeling of accomplishment finishing gives me. Feet up; fingers laced behind my head, all that. I also write because I want to be like writers I admire; I want to emulate them, or at least parts of them, the same way I want to emulate my parents, or at least parts of them. And I call bullshit on any writer that claims otherwise.

There's nothing inherently wrong with wanting to be like someone. But for writers (and I assume artists in general) it may be tricky.

When I'm stressed about why I write and, since The Paris Review isn't asking me, I wonder, "am I writing because I want to create stuff and have that satisfied feeling?" (I think this is probably good). Or, "am I writing because I envy what I think famous writers have, which is recognition and (possibly) money?" (I think this is probably bad).

There's always something to want. That's what about our characters drive our stories forward.
We should be honest about what and why we, as writers, want as well.

@LiaKeyes asked, "Does introducing a horrid antagonist predispose us to like protagonist introduced later?"

Seems like a rhetorical question, doesn't it? Of course we'd feel that way. We think, "What a jackass! Relieve us of this human garbage!" Leaving aside a highly complex character like Lolita's Humbert Humbert (who I wrote about last week) two simple exceptions suggest otherwise.

Darth Vader and Richard III.

Luke spends most of the first two movies: wah-wah because he can't mind lift chunks of metal or getting his friends into crap situations (he gets cool in Jedi but teamed up with fuzzy wuzzies because fundamentally he's a dip). In Richard III, whoever (someone I can't remember) put an end to Richard jerking everyone around. Both stories are the epitome of a low-seed playoff upset. I remember who upset the San Antonio Spurs in round one this year but will forget by the time next season begins (even if starts on time).

Need a tissue?

The situation's different if the antagonist is a grease-sweating pimp. Can a regular scum captivate an audience? He may emphasize a lack of virtue and predispose us to like the protagonist later. But a truly great villain does more than serve a story's need for an adversary.

A reader fascinated by an antagonist can experience an additional conflict: Why am I captivated by this awful person?

Clearly, a captivating antagonist can eclipse a protagonist. Maybe George Lucas and Shakespeare imbalanced those works by putting more dark matter into those characters. They also made them truly memorable.

As the question suggests, introducing a horrible scuzzy antagonist will likely make the protagonist sympathetic when he or she shows up later. Putting work into complex antagonists helps accentuate a story's conflict. It makes the story more than just good guy vs bad guy Jack Bauer fare.

(Rick Moody on Discovery)

An article about Rick Moody in The Rumpus quoted an interview published in Daniel Alarcón's book The Secret Miracle: The Novelist’s Handbook.

Moody is discussing his aversion to outlines

Rick Moody: Ideally I know the beginning and something about the end. But even these are not requirements. Discovery is the fun part.

Here's his response when asked about whether or not he works from an outline: Never. Books that are outlines often read as though they are outlines, as though events and personages contained within are subordinate to an outline, and that is a philosophical approach that is anathema to this writer.

Outlines lead to hair loss. Whenever I've written something good off an outline, it's a Christmas miracle. Outlines usually lead to crises, because Moody's sorta right: discovery is the fun part.

He's also wrong. Stories based on outlines don't necessarily read as "subordinate to an outline." Outlines don't preclude discovery, unless maybe you're a tool incapable of thinking critically; unwilling to follow inspiration.

Discovering something that an outline didn't anticipate and revising it makes me uneasy but creating something from nothing shouldn't be easy. Are outlines any less creative than writing straight from the first to last page? Do they work for all writers? Obviously not, but dismissing writing strategies out of hand is proscriptive and since when do proscriptions nurture creativity?

Different methods work for all writers (your outliners; your pantsers; your stoners or boozers working off what's happening to their brains) but discovery, I think, compels most of us to keep at it. Are outliners not creative? Don't they have minds and feelings and such and such? If their pens burst do they not stain? If fact, aren't there some works that seem impossible without outlines?

When the topic of the short story comes up writers sometimes say, "ah! The lost art of the short story!" or "Man oh man, the short form's such a challenge!"

The fiction and writing blogs I read are great, but those that focus on form mostly discuss the novel. As a writer of both, let me ask, "'sup, fiction bloggers? Is the art really lost or too hard? Or does short fiction not pay the bills? (Do novels anyway?)"

I keep working at short fiction because it's true, it's a challenge: a decathlon in a walnut. There's a shitload you've got to do, much of what a novel demands but in a fraction of the space.

One reason it's a challenge is I struggle against extrapolating. Ideas in almost every sentence could become a paragraph. Seth Hero's dad gets mentioned: "what's his story?" That's 10,000 words right there. "What kind of childhood did Dad have? Is Seth passionate because the father was aloof? How'd he take the news of Seth's collision?" Is my story even about Seth's car crash anymore?

I tend to talk. A. Lot. (Which you know if you've listened to my podcast. It's easy to talk a lot, but it's hard to do it well. That rolls into my writing habits and can easily roll over an otherwise good story.

Short fiction employs the same fundamentals as the novel and novella. You've got your flash backs, flash forwards, framing devices, complex narrators and characters, POV shifts, red herrings, so on. When used well, they're awesome. Used poorly, they're the stuff of Freshman Year Fiction Club.

Write about it, bloggers! Tell us about short fiction economics. How close to the end do you start? How do you gauge when you've introduced too many characters? How stressed do you get about a tight ending? What/how do you cut?

Or... screw it? Should I get back to that novel that started as a short story?
