Torres de enfriamiento

El reciente brote de la bacteria legionela en el Bronx, NY que dejo a más de 10 muertos y más de 100 infectados ha provocado cambios. Por primera vez, la ciudad firmó una ley para regular las torres de enfriamiento, fuente principal de esta bacteria.

Lo interesante de todo es que a pesar del alto número de personas hospitalizadas por esta enfermedad en el país, no existen leyes que obliguen a la regulación de estas torres.

La Guerra de las Guaguas

Aquí mi primera investigación sobre los pequeños autobuses que transportan a pasajeros desde Nueva Jersey a Nueva York.

Durante nuestra investigación descubrimos una serie de irregularidades de compañías de autobuses que ponen en peligro la vida de los pasajeros. Encontramos que a veces la necesidad por conseguir pasajeros era tan grande que los choferes usaban tácticas competitivas muy peligrosas. Por ejemplo: agresividad al volante, distracciones, entre otras cosas. Aquí los links de la primera y segunda parte.

Hello loves!

¡Hola mis amores!

Ha pasado bastante tiempo desde que escribo en mi blog... pero ya estamos de regreso.

Les cuento, mucho ha pasado. Me mude de la bella ciudad de Tampa, Florida donde llevaba trabajando más de un año para la estación de cable Infomás a la gran manzana. Así es.

Para aquellos que me conocen saben que yo nací y me crie en Brooklyn, NY. So, se podrán imaginar que estoy sumamente feliz de estar de regreso en casa. Pero más que eso, estoy exageradamente feliz y me siento bendecida porque estoy trabajando para Univision 41!! Me contrataron como reportera investigativa. Lo bueno de este lugar es que podré subir mis historias en mi página para aquellos que aún me siguen desde la Florida y otras partes del mundo.

Hello loves! Hola mis amores!

This week I had the pleasure of chatting to wonderful H.S. students about Education! These amazing Hispanic students received the Vilma Fernandez Zalupski Academic Excellence Award from St. Pete College. They were so excited, and I was even more excited for them. It definitely took me back in time to my years in school. Just like me, these students are eager to learn and dedicated to education.

Below you can find some pictures of the event. The most gratifying moment was when several of them approached me and told me.. "Your speech inspired me", that's exactly what I wished for. I wanted to inspire these students to believe that they can do whatever they want to do as long as they have an education and a vision.

These students are destined for success. Remember... "Whatever the mind can conceive it can achieve".

Carmel Cafe-Great dining experience

Hola amigos! Hello friends! So I accepted a media invitation to this great restaurant called Carmel Cafe!

They invited me to try there "Spring Menu," and I have one thing to say- delicious! The appetizer was a sausage and pineapple flatbread. The taste was perfect. Sweet and Salty, just how I like it.

Second on the list: Grilled Shrimp & Pasta!!

The shrimp was amazing but the sauce on the pasta was exquisite. It was a sweet tomato jam. Yum yum yum!

Now to all of my hummus lovers...Carmel Cafe has something for you. The Mezze Platter! It brings muhammarra, edamame hummus, goat cheese, stuffed peppers, crispy fried feta, marinated artichoke hearts, sundried tomato, and grilled pita!!! Delicious

This spot is great. It has a wide variety of plates and if you are looking for a modern, yet intimate and comfortable dining experience I highly recommend it!

It was extra special for Shakira's beau... Piqué...That's how old he was when he met the singer. It is also Shakira's new song- 23. I just finished hearing the song, and I can tell you esta buena... "Do you believe in destiny, cus I do, as i did then, when you were only 23..." bow chica wow wow...

Shakira dijo en una entrevista que- "¡Tenía miedo que la gente fuera a pensar que estaba robando cunas!".

Y es Shakira le lleva 10 añitos al jugador de soccer... Pero no se que opinan ustedes pero como dicen por ahí... Age is nothing but a number.

I want a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame....

Monday's recent celeb to be presented with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame reminded me on how bad I want one...Haha! Hey there is nothing wrong with dreaming, plus dreams do come true. Anyways, one of my favorite movie actresses, Kate Winslet was honored with the star... Should I mention she looked absolutely stunning, this was her first appearance after giving birth to her son Bear 3 months ago.

This gorgeous doll has been nominated for an Oscar not once, or twice, but six times, including for her role as Rose alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in 1998's Titanic. She took the golden statue home in 2009 for her role as a Nazi concentration camp guard in the The Reader.

You go girl. You deserve the star and more!

Hola mis amores! Yesterday I had the pleasure of covering an award ceremony in Tampa. The award is called the Josephine Howard Stafford memorial award. It is given to current or former employees of the city. This year's recipient was Frances Henríquez. An empowering Latina who served as the first woman, first Hispanic, and the last elected City Clerk for 5 terms!

She was overwhelmed, and it was the cutest thing ever. As I interviewed her people who she hadn't seen in years came up to her to congratulate her. She would tell me, "can we stop for a moment, so that I can say hello. I haven't seen them in a very long time," and of course how can I say no to that.

Oscars 2014...was popping!

Man! Last night I watched the Oscars and all I can say is... Man! I love Ellen! This woman did an outstanding job hosting the Academy awards. Pizza delivery...Selfies...Fairy costume.

What about the acceptance speeches? Lupita Nyong'o moved everyone with her speech. She won an award for her role in "12 years a slave." My man... Matthew McConaughey wins best actor for his role in "Dallas Buyers Club." In his speech... he thanked his fellow nominees, cast mates, and...God!

Jared Leto... took home the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award as a transgendered woman in "Dallas Buyers Club"- he started his speech by telling the audience about a teenage girl from Louisana. He described her as a H.S dropout and a single mom... that woman he later revelead was his momma... who accompanied him to the Oscars as his date along with Leto’s brother Shannon.

And of course.. siendo latina.. I can't forget to mention Alfonso Cuarón who won best director Oscar for his movie "Gravity." Orgullo latino... sin duda.

So now you tell me what did you enjoy the most of this year's Oscars?

Bollywood is coming to town!

Bollywood is coming to town! This week I had the pleasure of interviewing Indian cinema mega stars: Priyanka Chopra and Anil Kappor. Both joined the International Indian Academy or IIFA in a 3 day tour to talk Bollywood.

"Our movies are about music, celebration, colors, and lights. It is like a big show," says Priyanka, former Miss World and she recently worked on a music video with Mr. 305: Pitbull....DALE!

Anil Kapoor, who we've seen in movies like Slumdog Millionaire tells us that the awards will exceed expectations. "Whatever they expect it will be much more. Much more than what they expect, and I promise you it will be there monies worth, and it will be an experience for them."

The kick-start events began in L.A, they stoped here in Tampa, and the last stop was New York City. The Tampa event included colorful performances and presentations to introduce what many describe as a 3 day spectacular.

The awards weekend will be huge for the city of Tampa. It is the first time they hold them in the U.S.

The event will take place from April 24-26. Some of the prime spots to the show are over $3,000 bucks.. Yup, the cheapest are around $93.. Yeah, I know a lot of money, but hey it looks like it will be worth it.

According to the charity and fundraising database, The Chronicle of Philanthropy, Mark and his wife Priscilla Chan, donated 18 million shares of Facebook stock worth over $990 million to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. They were first on the list, coming in second was Phil Knight, co-founder and chairman of Nike Inc. He donated $500 million to the Oregon Health and Science University Foundation. Third on the list, former New York City mayor, Michael Bloomberg. Bloomberg donated $350 million to John Hopkins University...

I had a wonderful time with my family, but throughout the whole night I couldn't help but wonder "man this year flew by!"

Comí delicioso! Creo que una de las cosas que disfruto más de esta época festiva es sin duda la comida! El pernil, la lasaña, la ensalada de papa! Que rico!!!

Claro, lo más importante es el compartir con la familia, pero la comida no caí nada mal.

I ate really good food! That's one of the things I enjoy the most of this time of year! The food! The pork, the lasagna, the potato salad, I tell you no need to worry about those extra calories during this time of year.

It was a great Christmas, and I got a new toy! #fitbitone this tiny gadget can do so much. Tracks your sleep, your steps, your miles, your calorie intake, it does it all.

Well, apparently this photo has caused a whole lot of controversy many think it's purely bizarre for a woman to look like this only days after giving birth. What do you think?

Hola amigos! Hello Friends! So, here goes the highlight of my week: Great American Teach In!!

Yes! This year I had the pleasure once again of speaking to young, bright, and inquisitive students. This time around they were 4th and 5th graders from Wimauma elementary school.

They had a lot of fun questions for me including if I've interviewed the president, or Lebron James... To which I answered No, and no, but very soon. Jaja.

You know that feeling when you know you've inspired someone to do better and bigger things? Well that's my objective everytime I stand before these youngsters. I hope to inspire them to become the leaders of tomorrow.

Ahora en español! El punto culminante de mi semana fue....Great American Teach In!

Es un programa donde profesionales hablan con estudiantes sobre sus respectivas carreras.

Tuve el placer de visitar la escuela primaria de Wimauma, donde hable con estudiantes del cuarto y quinto grado sobre mi profesión. Los estudiantes estaban muy entusiasmados y me hicieron varias preguntas, entre ellas "¿Mrs! Has entrevistado al presidente" ? Otro me preguntó si he entrevistado al jugador de baloncesto Lebron James! Obviamente las repuestas fueron que no! Y no pero que muy pronto! Jaja.

Además enfatizé la importancia de la educación.

La razón por la cual disfruto estas actividades es porque se que de alguna manera u otra puedo inspirar a estos pequeños alcanzar sus sueños!

Dontae Morris: The Now Guilty Cop Killer

The highlight of my week without a doubt was the Dontae Morris trial. The now guilty cop killer!
Friday, after four hours of deliberating, jurors found Morris guilty of killing two Tampa police officers on June 29, 2010. Officers David Curtis and Jeffrey Kocab were gunned down by Morris after a routine traffic stop.

Now, Morris faces the death penalty. The sentencing phase could begin as early as Tuesday, Nov. 19.

Bueno esta semana, me tocó cubrir el juicio de Dontae Morris! Este viernes, después de 4 horas de deliberación, los miembros del jurado lo encontraron culpable por la muerte de dos oficiales de Tampa. El mortal tiroteo ocurrió el 29 de Junio del 2010 durante una parada de transito. Morris le disparo de muerte a los oficiales Davis Curtis y Jeffrey Kocab.

Morris enfrenta la pena de muerte. La fase de sentencia podría comenzar este martes 19 de noviembre.

This made my heart melt. The oldest female competitor to participate in the New York City Marathon died a day after completing the race.

Joy Johnson who was 86, fell at the 20 mile mark, yet did't want to visit the hospital. She fell asleep that night and never woke up. She had run in the event 25 consecutive times, and she often said she wanted to die running.

50,000 runners participated in the marathon. However, of that number 31 were over 70 years old.

I wish my legs are still as strong when I hit the 86 mark, if i do.

Hola amigos! Hello friends! So, this week I had the pleasure of interviewing a lovely couple who turned to surrogacy to grow their family.

Juan and Patrick have been a couple for more than 4 years. They fell in love and decided to start a family, but they needed help. So, they searched for a surrogate mom in the state of California since at that time Florida laws prohibited same sex couples to participate in the process. Once they found their mom, they got an egg donor, and put their goodies to use! Soon after, they had their first child, Lorenzo, but they didn't want to stop there. So, they when through the whole process again, so that little Lorenzo can have a sibiling. ¿Que pasó ? Bueno que llegaron 3! Trillizos! They had triplets, something they weren't expecting.

So now, Juan and Patrick have Lorenzo, Liam, Leo, and Lily! A beautiful family that if it weren't for the magic of science wouldn't have been possible.
