Premier League managers have reacted to the news that David Beckham is to retire from professional football.  Together, Arsene Wenger of Arsenal, Harry Redknapp, QPR and David Moyes Manager Everton described Beckham as a top class fellow and a great role model.  He announced his retirement from football earlier this week and many headlines in the British newspapers paid tribute by stating “End it like Beckham”!  Many predict David will continue to have a high profile in football even though he won’t be playing any more. A small crowd from Occupy Economics demonstrated in the heart of the financial district of Canary Wharf, to protest against mega-banks.  They called on the government to make banks smaller to prevent taxpayers from having to bail out any more big failures. Recently, new Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, also urged for a review on the banking system.  Human rights activist Peter Tatchell joined the protesters in their campaign to raise public awareness to the benefits of having smaller banks. There have been renewed calls for the government to crackdown on high-stakes gambling machines on the High Street.  The machines can accept stakes of up to £100 and offer prizes of £500.  In a recent Commons debate Culture Minister, Hugh Robertson, turned down the idea of new laws to restrict the machines or the betting shops where they are located despite an MP calling them the “crack cocaine” of gambling.   The Campaign for Fairer Gambling warns that the machines are too addictive and should be banned from betting shops on the High Street with immediate effect.  Labour MP, Kelvin Hopkins said problem gambling ruined lives and destroyed families, and wants the government to take a tougher stance.

The Banksy mural withdrawn from a controversial Miami auction is being put up for sale again this time in London.  Called ‘Slave Labour’, it disappeared from a shop wall in Wood Green in North London ending up in Florida.  The stolen painting caused an uproar among the locals who demanded its return.  But now it resurfaces and will be auctioned June 2 in Covent Garden, by the Sincura Group.  Sincura says the mural “has been sensitively restored under a cloak of secrecy”.  A local Councillor and the local Trades Union Congress have attacked the sale.  In the meantime all that is left on the wall is Banksy’s Rat that asks why?  YNUKtv caught up with the locals soon after the disappearance earlier this year.

See Track Think Train is a video that warns of the dangers of level crossings.  In recent years there have been more pedestrian deaths than motorists. Network Rail has launched a new campaign to raise awareness to the dangers of level crossings.  In a hard-hitting TV ad  called “See Track Think Train”, they warn that people of all ages should treat approaching rail footpath crossings as they would a busy road, even in quiet rural areas.  The intention of the £1m campaign is to reach and connect with the widest audience as possible to help save lives.  Watch

According to the producer of Behind the Candelabra the love scenes had to be approved by Matt Damon’s mother!  The Liberace biopic is full of glam and glitz and traces the tempestuous relationship between Liberace (Michael Douglas) and his much-younger boyfriend Scott Thorson (Matt Damon) in the late 70s and early 80s. The screen has lots of opulent sets, flashy cars and private jets, gaudy jewellery and the kind of sartorial splendour that would leave Lady Gaga gasping for breath.  It must have been fun to dress-up for Douglas and Damon, but also an arduous one, too: Both actors submitted to more than 60 wardrobe changes for the film.  Co-stars: Dan Aykroyd as Liberace’s agent, Rob Lowe, his doctor and Debbie Reynolds plays his mother.  Director: Steven Soderbergh.  Behind the Candelabra hits UK cinemas June 7  Leave a comment with your take on the film.

David Cameron is guaranteeing an EU referendum on the question of whether UK should be In or Out as he moves to publish a draft Bill in parliament for 2017 vote.  The dramatic action was taken to quell a row brewing with Conservative MPs.  While the PM said he was ‘very happy’ with the state of debate over Europe  many Tory MPs were unhappy and angry with his plans and threatened a revolt.    What are your thoughts on being In or Out of the EU?   Let us know
