For Zechariah to know Jesus at early age
For Jonathan to be a good example
For God to continually give us the wisdom to teach the children

The Birth of Zechariah Reynolds Sutjandra

My second son, Zechariah Reynolds Sutjandra was born today.

We came to the Baptist South hospital at 5:30 AM to get induced labor because Zechariah was 1 week overdue at that point. The process started around 7:30 AM, at which time Debbie had not yet felt any contraction. She could not eat or drink. She was allowed only some ice chips.

The nurse came around 10:00 AM to let us know that if we wanted to get epidural, we had to have it now or waited until 12:00 PM. Knowing how helpful epidural was when Jon was born, we decided to take the offer even when Debbie felt little pain.

After the epidural, the nurse increased the amount of oxytocin (Pitocin) maybe thinking that Debbie would not feel the pain anyway. Well, as it turned out, the epidural had no effect. Debbie felt increasing pain, she started screaming. It reminded me of the baby delivery scenes in movies, only this time, I was in one.

We kept asking the nurse to get the anesthesiologist, but we had to wait until 12:00 PM. In between asking and getting the same responses, I noticed that the baby heartbeat monitor went to 54, too low for a normal heartbeat around 120 bps. I brought that to the nurse attention. The nurse came immediately, telling us that it might mean the baby was ready to come out. Started making calls to other nurses to come, to any doctor to come and help, begging Debbie to focus, breathe, but refrain from pushing until the doctor comes.

I am so grateful that Debbie listened and did what the nurse said. I was told much earlier that when the baby was born without the presence of a doctor would automatically be brought to NICU. That would be much more headaches.

So I can imagine Dr. Stoddard came running from the next building to our building. It was within minutes that Dr. Stoddard came to our room after the nurse made the call for any doctor to come. And I was very thankful for that.

She was geared up, and after 1.5 contraction later, Zechariah's whole head was out. The doctor took out liquids from his mouth, and asked for another little push from Debbie. Zechariah was completely out, purplish blue, got transfered to the warmer, and started crying. The nurse measured his weight and cmt and other vitals. He weighed 8 lbs and his height was 20 inch. His head circumference was at 14.4 in and his chest was at 13.4 in.

Central Texas sky spewed golf-ball-size hails on 3/25/09 for about (at least) 5 minutes in the evening. Debbie's car was badly damaged, and not the only one.

Had the windshield and rear window fixed at Ace Glass and Doors. The owner mentioned a ten-fold revenue on the Thursday and Friday because lots of people coming to have their car windows fixed.

A tribute to my old Camry:

I remembered giving away the '92 Camry when I was in Los Angeles in May 2008. O that car, full of memory. She's loyal to me even when I did not call her by name. Some even mocked and called her 'Jomblo Car', 'Junk', o poor her. She's nice to everyone.

I did not take any pictures, but fortunately google maps street-view retains a picture.

Here is an interesting story, the state-owned electricity company has been losing money (since I don't know when). The 2003 report taken from their website shows a loss of 1.4e12 rupiah (equivalent to approximately 140e6 US dollars). Interestingly the report shows an expense of 2.165.000e6 rupiah (= 217e6 US dollars) labeled as "lain-lain". To me, labeling something as "miscellaneous" should raise concerns, especially when the amount shown is 1.5 times of the reported loss. Who in their right mind would invest in a company like this?

TXU and Reliant might be scratching their heads as to how an effectively monopolist loses money in the electricity business. Maybe PLN just does not charge their consumers enough to recover their costs, or maybe, just maybe it is an 'accounting glitch'.

Missing Umbilical Cord

This morning we went to the pediatrician for Jonathan's second check-up visit. It's amazing how he is calm in the car and at the doctor's office while he was crying left-and-right just when we left home. I guess a sense of preserving good image is there at early age.

Interesting things I learned from the doctor:

Baby is producing breast milk because of hormone transferred by breastfeeding. Gratefully, the doctor assured me that it would stop at some point.
Bottlefeeding: Soy milk gives more gas to baby compared to regular lactose-milk. In contrast, mommy that drinks cow's milk (which is lactose) and breastfeed will give more gas to the baby.
You can never overdose the baby with Mylicon

The doctor showed baby's umbilical cord was hanging by a thread. Sure enough, the next time we changed baby's diaper, the umbilical cord was gone.

Baby weighs 8lbs 2oz. and he has grown by 1in since his birth to 22in.

Little baby Jonathan Maxwell Sutjandra was born on Aug 6, 2007. Praise the Lord God, he answers all our prayers. Baby is healthy and responding well to his surroundings. Debbie is recovering well.
