Annual Jagannath Rath Yatra begins today

The fervour of the annual Jagannath rath yatra has begun in Puri. Lakhs of devotees gather in the holy city to pull the three chariots of Lord Jagananth, Lord Balbhadra and Goddess Subhadra from Jagannath to Gundicha temple.

But amidst the excitement is the threat to the festival from extremist groups. The district police have put in place elaborate security which includes the extensive deployment of CCTVs, bomb squads, the Rapid Action Force & 5000 security men.

SP Puri Amitendra Nath Sinha said, “There is general threat perception that we have got from our headquarters and intelligence department. So we have prepared ourselves accordingly and in case of any major mishap there are special teams in place to handle them.”

But it is unlikely that the threat will mar the spirit of the procession. 45 year old Kushal Tewari for instance has been camping in Puri for the past few days with her family to experience the magic of the rath yatra.

“The festival connects us to God. We have come to meet Lord Jagannath. There is great deal of satisfaction to have the darshan of Lord Jagannath on Rath yatra day. I am so excited,” said a devotee.

Even people from outside India are in Puri like Richard a young associate professor from Holland.

“I have heard from my Indian friends a lot about this festival and always wanted to see it. I am enjoying this as this is something which you can’t see in Europe,” said Richard.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is also at the 400 year old Lord Jagannath Temple where he pulled the chariot carrying the deity. The chariot festival always takes place on the second day of Sukla Paksha, a day that marks the waxing cycle of the moon. The fervour of the annual jagannath rath yatra has begun in Puri as well.

The history of Lord Jagannath Rath yatra in Puri is more than thousand years old. And all these years what has not changed much is its religious fervor, tradition, rituals and grandeur. Perhaps that is the reason why this festival is still very popular among its devotees which attracts more than a million of them every year to Puri on this occasion.

Sarsapurs Rasodas for Jagannath Puri devotees

Reference: Ahmedabad Mirror.com – The residents of Saraspur, the mosal (maternal place) of Lord Jagannath, are all geared up to host one of the biggest religious events in the city — the 134th Rath Yatra. The locality, with a population of about 50,000, has been feeding the devotees accompanying the procession since time immemorial. This year, as the yatra falls on a Sunday, organisers are expecting a huge turnout of devotees.

“Saraspur has an important part to play in the city’s Rath Yatra tradition. When the yatra started, the mahants of both Jagannathji temple and Ranchhodraiji temple were gurubhais – they both were trained by the same guru. Thus began the tradition of the yatra halting at Saraspur for lunch,” Lakshmandasji, mahant of Ranchhodraiji temple said.

Just like all previous years, residents of Saraspur are ready to serve lunch to the devotees of Lord Jagannath, food inflation and fuel price rise notwithstanding. A member of the Luhar Sheri Yuvak Mandal said, “Saraspur has the blessings of Lord Jagannath. Food inflation and price rise don’t affect us. We will organise the bhandaras just like we have been in all these years.” Residents of 10 pols in Saraspur are organising ‘rasodas’ (kitchens) to serve food to the worshippers.

This year the Ranchhodrai Mandir at Nani Vasan Sheri will serve 300 kg dal, 500 kg rice, 100 kg puri, 400 kg dudhi-chana subzi, 500 kg undhiyu, 150 kg giloda subzi, 400 kg bundi laddoos and 400 kg phulwadi for about 25,000 people.

The Gopalji Ramji Mandir in Moti Salvivad ni Pol is organising a bhandara for another 25,000 devotees. According to mahant Mahamandaleshwar Akhileshwar Dasji, the 300-year-old temple has been been organising the feast for past 100 years. This year the temple will make about 100 kg of dal, 300 kg of rice, 1,000 kg of bundi laddoos, 1,000 kg phulwadi, 200 kg dudhi-potato subzi and 200 kg chana.

“The bhandaras started work on June 30. Several saints and yogis from across India come here to pay their respects to the lord. We also give dakshina to all of them,” said the mahant.

The locals of Moti Salvivad ni pol have organised another bhandara. This is the seventh year that Janak Patel is organising the rasoda. They will serve 1,500 kg laddoos, 1,300 kg puris, 1,600 kg potato curry, 1,200 kg phulwadi and 30,000 water pouches. The food will be served buffet style and in steel plates.

- At Gandhi ni Pol, Narendra Panchal has organised a bhandara for 7,000 devotees. On menu is 400 kg bundi ladoos, 400 kg puris and 400kg potato subzi. Anil Patel’s rasoda at Limda ni Pol will offer 700 kg puris, 900 kg potato subzi and 250 kg bundi ladoos. An estimated 9,000 devotees will have their lunch here.

Kadiawad’s Kadia Yuvak Mandal will serve 400 kg khichdi and 400 kg potato subzi. Luhar Sheri’s yuvak mandal will be preparing 1,000 kg mohanthal, 1,000 kg puris and 1,000 kg potato subzi for over 20,000 devotees. Rajubhai Madi of Amblivad will make mohanthal, phulwadi, potato subzi and puris for 7,000 devotees.

At Panchavad, 65-year-old Kantaba, the great grand daughter of Rudima who started the tradition of bhandara here, is managing the rasoda. She will be offering 150 kg puris, 200 kg potato subzi, 150 kg bundi ladoos to 5,000 people.

The Story of Jagannath Puri

There is a mythological story famous about the Jagannath Puri Rath yarta. Once in Dwarka, queens of lord Krishna asked Mata Rohini to tell them something about Krishna’s Brij lila, Gopi and their affairs.
Mother tried avoiding at first, but on excessive request of queens, she told them. Then, Subhadra was asked to stand at the gates to house and not to let anyone come inside. Coincidentally, lord Krishna and Balram came there. Subhadra followed the orders of Rohini and did not let them go in.
Standing on the doors, all the three of them heard the narration of Brij love affairs. Dev Rish Narad also heard this and requested lord to reside here in the same love form. Lord agreed to the wish of Narad. The temple here has the idols of lord Jagannath, Balram and Subhadra.
These idols don’t have legs, they have shoulders but no hands. And, the idols are made of wood. They are replaced in every 12 years. This Rath Yatra is carried on from the 12th century. This yatra is carried up to the Gundicha temple. On the way, lord is offered Khichdi in the Mausima temple.

Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra is started on Dwitiya of Ashad Shukla Paksha, in Orissa. This festival is celebrated for 9 days. This day, Rath of lord Krishna along with Rath of Subhadra and Balram is taken out with full excitement. Rath Yarta is famous all over India.
Jagannath Puri occasion is a famous Hindu festival of Orissa.It is celebrated in Ashad month. In this festival, a ride or Yatra of three God is carried out. It is said, in the Treta Yug Rameshwaram Dham was the holy place. In Dwapar Yug, Dwarika was the place of welfare and in Kali Yug it’s Jagannath Puri Dham. It is one of the four main Dhams of India.

Krishna Janmashtami is the festival celebrated to rejoice the birth of Lord Krishna. And Jagannath Puri being dedicated to one of the many forms of Lord Krishna, the festival is celebrated with great fervor here.

The festival is celebrated on the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadra according to the Hindu calendar. This day could fall anywhere between the months of August and September of the English calendar.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna took birth to destroy all evil and reinstate the good on Earth. He was born at midnight, and that’s how the festival of Krishna Janamashtami is celebrated too. The complete temple of Puri Jagannath is decorated with lights and the deities are dressed up in new clothes and jewelry.

One can experience the exuberance of energy throughout the temple and the surrounding areas, with people singing hymns and prayers in the name of Lord Jagannath and the other deities. Devotees even fast the whole day, which is broken only at midnight, when Lord Krishna is born.

The arrival of midnight sees food offerings being given to the deities and the same being then given to the devotees present in the temple as Prasad. The next day, the festival of Nandotshaba is celebrated, symbolic of the celebrations that were organized by Nanda when Lord Krishna was born, according to Hindu mythology.

The festival of Krishna Janmashtami in Jagannath Puri sees a huge influx of people, with devotees bee lining just to get inside the temple and catch a glimpse of their favorite deity. If you are visiting Jagannath Puri during the festival of Krishna Janmashtami, it is advised to plan your itinerary keeping in mind that the visit would take a complete day to be any worthwhile.

IRCTC special train to Shirdi Dham on May 16

The Indian Rail Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is set to launch a tour special train to Shirdi Dham in Maharashtra in May.

The special train will begin its journey from Lucknow and arrive at Kanpur Central railway station before further proceeding to Shirdi Dham. This will give city people an opportunity to board the special train from Kanpur Central railway station itself.

The six-day tour to Shirdi Dham will leave Lucknow on May 16.

The officials of IRCTC have designed the tour package this time with a host of amenities to offer.

“Any passenger willing to pay Rs 3,078 can get a berth booked for himself in the special train to Shirdi Dham. The special train will be well guarded and the passengers will be served meals, including bed tea. The cost of meals and local sightseeing is included in the cost of the ticket,” said Manoj Sinha, chief regional manager, IRCTC while talking to TOI.

Puri Jagannath : Temples secret treasure discovered

Reference Hinduism Today: Thousands would have passed a dilapidated building on their way to Puri’s Jagannath temple, called Emar Math, not sparing a glance at the 200-year-old structure that on Saturday turned out to be a treasure trove worth US$ 20 million.

Cops, probing a burglary, went into the Math only to find slabs of silver weighing more than 17 tonnes. There were 522 silver slabs, each weighing between 35kg and 40kg. These had been stashed in four wooden treasuries in a sealed room. Emar Math is situated right in front of the Jagannath temple.

‘We came to know about the silver here after the arrest of Barun Baral, who was trying to sell a silver slab in Dhenkanal on Friday. During interrogation he told us that he had stolen it from Emar Math,’ said Puri superintendent Sanjay Kumar.

The superintendent said Baral worked as a labourer in the Math that is spread over four acres. ‘During renovation work, he stumbled upon the treasury. He might have stolen some pieces with the help of others,’ Kumar said. When a stone fell off during renovation, the laborers caught a glimpse of the silver.

‘Baral’s revelation led to the stunning recovery of stacks of silver slabs from the room that was sealed. We broke down the walls to enter the room,’ Kumar added.
