There were several observations and comments about the role played by Black people in the area over the years, with numerous references to Walter Rolling, the local early black educator from Laskay, who museum Curator Kathleen Fry referred to as “our teacher in residence here.”

Mayor Margaret Black said the Township was proud to be taking part in the observances.

She observed that Quakers were among the first settlers in the area, pointing out famed rebel Jesse Lloyd was a Quaker. The Quakers were opposed to slavery, she said.
