Mirror Lake

I just came back from Yosemite. IT was pretty crowded today and it was hard to get a parking spot. On the bright side, the falls are full of water and the photographic opportunities are endless. We hiked from the Ahwahnee hotel to Mirror Lake and I was pleased with this photograph.

Yosemite Valley in May

There are many small ponds in Yosemite Valley due to the snow melt and the above normal precipitation this year. These ponds are a paradise for photographers since they create beautiful reflections of the surrounding mountains.

May is a wonderful time in Yosemite Valley. The landscape changes basically daily and there is always something exiting to photograph. The waterfalls are at their peak and there is still snow left in the higher elevations.

I took this image with an infrared filter. Since the filter cuts out more than 99% of the normal light I had to use a long exposure time. I took photographed this image just below the fall. Enjoy!

Yosemite Valley

I have seen many images and photographed Yosemite Valley many times from "Inspiration Point" and other classical photographic locations that I am always happy to see the Valley from a different perspective. Enjoy this one which I took away from the road!

Old tree in front of El Capitan and Half Dome

Notice how close El Capitan and Half Dome appear together in this image. David, my partner and I left the main road and hike towards the Cascades in order to get this shot.

Wildflowers on the Hite Cove Trail

Each year in March the wildflower in the foothills around Yosemite put on an extraordinary show of beauty. I like to photograph on the Hite cove trail which is located a few miles outside Yosemite National Park on Hwy 140. The entire trail is about four miles long but the most spectacular flowers are right in the beginning.

Mt. Shasta

I had the opportunity to photograph in Northern California and yes, there are pretty places outside Yosemite. I photographed Mt. Shasta from various locations. This image is actually created from the City of Shasta using a moderate telephoto zoom lens.

Bridalveil Creek

The falls in Yosemite Valley are carrying a lot more water now and the creeks are filling up, however, they are not on their peek yet. I photographed Bridalveil creek below the Bridalveil fall using a tripod and a long exposure time.

As soon as the snow starts to melt the waterfalls in Yosemite Valley are becoming incredible subjects. The next three month (April, May, June) are prime targets for photographers.

Storm over Half Dome

The weather can change dramatically in just a few minutes. This can create some dangerous situations especially in the winter. It is a good idea to have always chains, extra clothing, food and water in the car when you visit Yosemite.

Lower Yosemite Fall

I almost did not take this shot. I stood in the beginning of the short walking trail and while my friends went to the bathroom I had some time to kill. So I decided to take this shot more or less out of boredom. It is probably my best image of the Fall as of today. The light was just perfect!
The experience taught me an important lesson that I almost forgot. You can always delete a bad picture but you cannot create a situation like this a second time! Therefor photograph as much as you can and keep the great images!

Fern Spring in February

I drove up on Friday to photograph Horsetail Fall again. Unfortunately clouds moved in and it started to rain shortly before sunset. It was still a great day in Yosemite and I got a few great shots like this one. Fern Spring is one of my favorite places in Yosemite Valley.

Horsetail Fall

Every year around Valentine's day the evening sun performs a spectacle on El Capitan. The sun shines through the water and gets reflected from El Capitan and the appearance of the fall changes.
I photographed this images last night (02-15-10) knowing that the best days are still ahead. In order to get the fall to glow I had to use neutral density filters and some post production work in Photoshop.

Lower Chilnualna Fall

Lower Chilnualna Fall is an incredibly pretty waterfall. The good news is that we did not see too many people up here. It is probably too far away from Yosemite Valley and the hike is not for everyone.

I have seen so many pictures of Yosemite fall and I have photographed it so many times and still it is always a great experience and privilege to stand on the bridge in front of it. I used a 15mm wide angle lens to get this image.

Yosemite Valley after the snow storm

It does not happen that often that Yosemite Valley is closed. We drove up to Yosemite on Hwy. 140 on January 23, 2010 hoping that the roads would reopen and we were thrilled to hear that they were. This opened up the possibility fro a day of incredible photo opportunities. I shot this image on Hwy 41 right and the tunnel.

Photographing after a rainstorm can be a very rewarding endeavor. There are great clouds and water on the street that reflects trees, buildings and other things. I put my camera close to the ground shooting this image.

Old house - Pioneer History Center

About 0.5 miles from the Wawona Hotel is the Pioneer History Center. It is basically a small reconstructed village of last century houses. In the summer time there are docent there and teach about the good old frontier life. I photographed such a house and tried to make the image look "old."

McWay Fall

The McWay Fall is located at the Julia Pfeifer Burns State Park is located 37 miles south of Carmel. The 80 feet Fall is offers excellent photo opportunities for every photographer. Camera setting: 90mm focal length, f32, 3.2sec., ISO 100. I also used a neutral density filter.

Yosemite Valley in January

Yosemite Valley in January can be full of snow, full of fog, icy and dangerous to drive, but it is unbelievable pretty. The clouds are out of this world and the feeling of majesty, grandeur and being incredibly blessed can hardly be denied.

Rocks and Trees

Starting at Curry village in Yosemite Valley we were walking towards Happy Isle and then towards Vernal Fall. Since there was a lot of snow around us I was surprised finding an area without snow on the ground. I used a 15mm lens to get this shot.
