Ring of Fire by Heather Huffman - Review and GIVEAWAY!

Okay, forgive my indulgence, but with a title like RING OF FIRE you cannot escape the thought of Johnny Cash singing the song of the same title. Heather Huffman brings a veritable roller coaster of highs and lows in this awesome modern day romance. Not only do you have gorgeous women and “Greek god” men who fall all over each other to avoid falling in love – but you also have a great subplot of political and industrial intrigue and in the midst of it – a few gruesome murders too.

Alexandra McAlister is a scientist buried deep within her volcano cave on the small island of Tuwanga in the South Pacific. Just as she thinks she is getting closer to making headway on her much worked for and awaited project, things come to a screeching halt and she finds herself swept away by a man she detests and a beautiful young princess she finds herself loving and wanting to protect. With her entire team dead or in jeopardy she knows she has no option BUT to follow Daniel “Joey” Martin wherever he thinks is safest. Following her newly appointed “protector” realizes quickly the ruse of being a happy family could easily come true – if only they would both let go and follow their heart instead of their mind.

Between the gun wielding thugs, the geek speak and the simmering romance that finally blossoms, I found this to be a book worthy of 5 stars. Huffman brings out a lot of great current issues regarding our Nation’s economic situation and the energy problems affecting our environment, but it flows well within the story and doesn’t make it overwhelming or boring. The few parts where “geek speak” was obvious where some of my favorites – as I am total closet dork/geek/nerd. I loved that she built the romance between Alex and Daniel over the course of the book without it being a simple “jump into bed together” situation that many romances seem to portray.

I would give it a PG-13 rating and not recommend for younger teen readers simply due to sexual context at times, but otherwise I found no other things in this book I didn’t like.

Nutrisystem Week 6: The Love of Donuts

Week 6 on the Nutrisystem Success Program and I weigh in today holding steady at 210.3 pounds. No loss – no gain. I blame a special night out and PMS water retention for this. I always have fluctuated a few pounds that week each month and this month was no exception. But, I am still pleased with the plan and my progress thus far. 20 pounds in 6 weeks is nothing to sneeze at!

Also this week – I am proud to say that I fit exercise into my routine again. No – I didn’t make it back to the gym and the really hot trainer I had been working with; ::sigh:: I couldn’t carve out the gas money to go back at night for that. So - I found ways of getting in a few extra steps at home. On my date night with my Love we walked across the “Big Dam Bridge” in Little Rock. Totally cool, stunningly beautiful (see pictures of sunset from there below) and yeah – cheesily romantic! Then a few other nights we bundled up the wee child and took a brisk stroll across the golf course we live on, over the hill..through the woods..to the ponds we walked! Not steady “big workout” like I would like – but definitely an improvement on the sedentary life I use to lead. Plus – it was fun time as a family, great stress free talk time for me and my Love and a fun way to learn more about where I live!

Now – the Program this week – I felt I did fairly well with. Eating out on date nights proves a bit tough (we so lack will power in Mexican restaurants!) but throughout the week I am sticking to the plan much better. It helps that I have a few more items in my kit this month that I really like compared to past months when I didn’t choose as wisely. Breakfast being one of my biggest problems in the past – I have discovered through Nutrisystem how easy and yummy it can be.

Are you like me and traditional breakfast items tend to be the last on your list of faves? Oh, I like a good piece of bacon with the rest of them – but I’m just NOT at ALL a fan of eggs at least not traditional eggs like scrambled, fried or boiled. Covered in cheese and sauce in an omelet or a breakfast burrito/taco? Yep – I’m all over that. But just plain eggs are NOT my thing. Donuts, sticky buns, cinnamon rolls? Yes! Yes! Yes! Those ARE my thing!

So – the omelets available with Nutrisystem I have already raved over. They don’t taste too eggy and have a great flavor. I’m not sure which I prefer – the ham and cheese or the garden vegetable, but both are good and satisfying, but what I really craved was a good old fashioned donut for breakfast (with a side of chocolate milk of course!) The Frosted Chocolate Donut is AWESOME! Yes, it’s not “just like the ‘real’ thing” but it is VERY good for a low fat/healthier version. Although it’s made to look like a glazed donut with chocolate frosting on it, it actually has the texture of a cake donut with chocolate frosting. Stick it in the microwave for 30 seconds and you have a truly delicious breakfast. I take some sugar free chocolate syrup and mix it in with my fat free or 1% milk and I have the perfect breakfast!

Nutrisystem is a big commitment mentally, physically and financially. I have to say at times I’ve been ready to throw in the towel and do weight loss a different way, but then I pick myself back up and make it work. It’s not for everyone, but it can be for most people. The plans are flexible, easy to understand and relative to grocery expenses these days – truly affordable.

I have been a hot tea fan for as far back as I can remember. In fact, one of my most cherished childhood memories is going out to eat Chinese with my family and being able to order the hot Chinese Tea. Maybe that is why I have always preferred tea over coffee? I think so!

I stumbled across Owens Acres Lavender, Herbs & Tea recently and was intrigued by the concept of herbal teas that are fresh (well, at least not the mass processed boxed variety) and unique. After taking a look around the website, I decided to try the Diet Assist Tea since I am currently trying to lose weight. Reading a little about the company, I found that the teas included many herbs and items I never would have expected. This tea for instance includes: chickweed, alfalfa, chaparral, dandelion, fennel, juniper, berries, celery and parsley.

The tea itself is rather earthy. Definitely not your typical Earl Grey by any means - but still, very nice. Will this blend help me lose weight? Well, I just don't know. I have drank a few cups, and I haven't seen any big difference, but the tea is tasty and I'd be willing to give it a good whirl!

Forest of Shadows by Hunter Shea - Book Review

As someone who loves to read just about every genre of book, I have to admit I’ve never read a book quite like this one. I’ve read suspense and mystery but never a “bump in the night” or “horror” suspense book until I set my hands on this novel by Hunter Shea.

Forest of Shadows by Hunter Shea introduces you to the world of the paranormal and the mysteries that surround it. Shea manages something many have a struggle with. He grips you from the first paragraph and seamlessly moves from an edge of your seat scene to the everyday happenings of a regular 9-5 couple. Through the studies and work of John Backman the lead character in the story – I learned a lot more about the paranormal than I ever imagined. Never before could I have imagined there was science behind some of the claims and explanations out there about ghosts, monsters and things like the Loch Ness Monster. You immediately fall in love with John and his plight in life. As dubious as you may be about paranormal things (I am a “nonbeliever”) you will cheer him on in his search for answers. At the same time, you will want to smack him upside the head and tell him to let go and move forward in life. Nothing can change the past.

The loss of his wife, the guilt of an argument right before her death, the struggle of raising their daughter alone (who happens to practically be a clone of her mom) and the uncertainty of it all pressing around him are enough to make the story amazing – add in a few ghosts and stories of terror and you have a best seller.

I was truly impressed with Shea’s ability to meld together two different story lines into one amazing novel. His storytelling ability is incredible and his characters are deep, realistic and the kind you want to get to know and leave the novel wishing they were real. With excellent descriptive scenes that flowed smoothly and dialogue that fit the scenes without seeming fake or forced, Shea turned me into a “bump in the night” fan when I didn’t think it was possible!

I give this book 5 stars easily. More if it was possible. My only objections to the book have more to do with language and adult content than the quality of writing. Although I don’t mind reading mature content, it generally isn’t my favorite. There are several scenes in which language or sexual content were more than I would typically recommend. So, if you are sensitive to those things – this isn’t the book for you. I would also say I would be hesitant to recommend to younger readers. It is an adult book in many ways and although there are some teenagers I wouldn’t have a problem recommending it to – they would definitely be in the older teen years. Not for your young teen who likes ghost stories at all. Otherwise – I truly look forward to future books put out by Shea in this genre.

Need a Good Book for a Younger Boy? Check out Mystery of the Puzzle Bones!

Having two boys I am definitely always on the lookout for a good book for them to read. So many children’s books out there are geared toward girls that I have found it difficult to find good boys books. Finding one in the Christian Fiction genre has been especially difficult.

When Media Guests approached me about reviewing this first book in the Adventures of the Boardunders Club I was really hoping to find a new series to buy for my 8 year old son who has recently gotten really enthusiastic about reading. I wasn’t disappointed and in fact have already added the other two books available in the series to my Amazon Wish List to grab in the near future.

Mystery of the Puzzle Bones is a GREAT introduction to Jaydon, Caleb, Ethan, Brandon and their trusty mascot/dog Roscoe. The book finds a group of four young boys (age wasn’t mentioned precisely but my guess is 9-11 years old) who are from different walks of life yet have a strong bond amongst them. Jaydon’s mom is a single mother who works hard to provide for him. His dog Roscoe is the “club” mascot of sorts and a constant companion. Caleb lives near Jaydon with his mom, dad and several siblings. Caleb’s Dad is a minister of sorts and of the four boys he is the only one who has an active faith in Jesus. Ethan comes from a family that is definitely wealthier but not without problems. The struggles between his parents affect him in ways they don’t realize. Brandon was more of a side character with not much introduction in this book, but I look forward to reading more about him in the future. (Yes, I will read all the books before I let my son – I liked the series already that much!)

Skateboard wielding, adventure seeking and somewhat fearless (at least wanting each other to think so) this group of boys has an underground clubhouse that every little boy would envy. The book contains brief encounters with bullies their own age, but quickly turns to life threatening encounters with bad adults. When a group of bones appears right outside their clubhouse entrance the boy’s curiosity is piqued. Pretty soon they are trudging through underground pipes and sewers looking for mystery. What seemed like a cool adventure at first quickly becomes a dangerous expedition into the unknown dark world of “Hidden Town”.

T.A. Smith combines a great kids mystery adventure story with good strong emphasis on looking to God/Jesus for strength in all circumstances. The plan of salvation is clearly written in easy to read ways that aren’t overbearing or “over the top”. I also appreciated the “moral of the story” that showed that the kids made mistakes and did things wrong, but learned from their mistakes. T.A. Smith took common discipline issues with kids that age and showed the depth of consequences from them.

This book is definitely one I will be recommending to my fellow moms of boys to read. It gets 5 stars in my book!

Nutrisystem Week 5: Someone Kick My Butt In Gear!

Admittedly this was not a stellar week for me. Somewhere in the last few weeks I have become a wee bit overwhelmed with my backlog of homework so going to the gym is on the back burner. I have managed fairly well with food (with the exception of a date night and eating out - still ate well, just not a Nutrisystem Success Program meal). I know I can do better (as I have) but I'm not going to beat myself up too much about it. I can't. If I get mad and depressed because I didn't lose more - then I will only start feeding myself to curb those emotions.

The chicken salad on a bagel thin or low cal wheat bread is delicious. Especially if you add a slice of tomato, pickle and a little lettuce! The Arroz Con Pollo has just enough spice to make it tasty without the "bite" that makes you reach for more water. It's filling, yummy and definitely in my top 5 meals. Do you like Almond Joy? The Coconut Almond Bar is a REALLY good version of one. Yep - there are really good meal choices with the Nutrisystem Success Program.

Not a huge weight loss for this week - but enough to push me over the 20 pound lost mark!!!!

The Sunny Side of the Mountain - Book Review

The Sunny Side of the Mountain is the debut romantic suspense novel by Charliann Roberts. This book introduces you to Cassandra just as she is trying to figure out how her life got to the point it is. You follow Cassandra as she suffers at the hands of an abusive husband, builds her life back up again after a horrible car accident and subsequent divorce and then as she falls in love once again. Alcoholism, mental and physical abuse, being followed by a deranged stalker and the elusive mystery of which man she should choose to start her live over with again keeps you guessing the whole way through.

Ms. Roberts has great characters in this book. Cassandra is a woman who begins weak but you watch develop into a strong woman who overcomes many obstacles. The two male leads (Nick and Sean) are also good characters that you come to love and root for throughout her time of "deciding". The villains in the book are definitely worthy of your scorn. Overall I felt it was a good debut novel for a first time author. Although at times the story seemed a bit choppy and the dialogue was lacking at times I still truly loved the story and the idea behind this book. I'm not sure if I could totally classify it in the suspense arena but it did have a good romantic subplot. I do look forward to reading the second installment in the North Woods series to see what happens with some of the minor characters that were mentioned in this book.

Choices of the Heart by Rhonda Kooyman - Book Review

I was looking forward to an easy read when Rhonda Kooyman sent me a copy of her novel Choices of the Heart. I knew it was a Christian fiction and could also be considered a romantic Christian fiction and was looking forward to digging in one day snuggled on the couch and enjoying a new author. What I wasn’t expecting is the heart wrenching profound impact a simple book could have on me. Folks – listen to me on this one – it’s much more than a simple romance. It’s deep, meaningful and has the power to change lives.

Rhonda Kooyman in her debut novel approaches tough issues that are rarely so openly discussed in Christian literature. I have read several secular novels that dealt with the issues within the book Choices of the Heart but only one other Christian author have I come across who did a good job of making it so clear, understandable and accomplishing the feat of making the reader angry at yet sympathetic for the lead Character. Rhonda Kooyman has hit a home run with this book.

In this book you meet Tracy Dewitt an attractive and somewhat popular high school senior. Right away you see that although her family life is nice on the outside it is far from perfect. Her parents rocky relationship coupled with being the youngest of four children has left her feeling out of place and more than a little let down with life. The cast of characters is introduced immediately with simple but thorough detail that gives you a clear picture of the roles played in her life. From her best friend Cory who many think is really her boyfriend to her “frenemy” Carla each person plays a significant part of the story that unfolds.

As happens unfortunately all too often, Tracy was quickly swept away by a stranger in town named Spencer. Although he seems to be the perfect man, it is quick to see he is bad to the bone. Yet, as I personally have experienced – despite abuse/pain/hurt/fear – Tracy (aka “Star”) refuses to leave him. Her love for him ties her to him regardless of the warnings of all those who love her. Regardless of her own misgivings and realizations – she feels that she can’t live without him.

This story takes us through years of abuse and humiliation that “Star” endures because she feels she has no choice, and in many ways – simply because she loves this man more than anything in the world and doesn’t think she can live without him. No matter how much it hurts to be with him – the fear of the pain of being without him keeps her from leaving.

In many ways, her story is one I could tell about myself. I didn’t suffer near what she did nor did I live in identical circumstances but the driving force behind her staying – an unexplainable love for the person who is simply WRONG for her – well, I’ve been down that road and suffered the consequences of it. This book touches on taboo things in the Christian world. Things like sex outside of marriage, abortion, drug abuse, alcoholism, prostitution and abuse. As much as I would like to say there are many books out there that show a woman she has choices no matter what she has done – I KNOW from personal experience there aren’t. What this book shows is the real way things happen. Not the fairy tale wrapped up perfectly way – but the way things happen in reality. People get abused, manipulated, hurt and even killed.

I applaud Rhonda Kooyman for taking such an honest and not sugar coated approach to reality for many women (and some men). The book shows how God can help you overcome obstacles and does forgive no matter what – but it doesn’t have the unrealistic undertone that many Christian Fiction books do. I hate to say, but admittedly – I get tired of reading Christian romance books because all too often they are what we’d love to see happen but they just simply aren’t realistic at all. This book easily gets 5 stars from me and will definitely be one I recommend widely. Not only are the plot and characters great but the writing is wonderful as well. Excellent in fact!

The Grateful Past

Sometimes looking your past straight in the face helps you fully appreciate your present.

I’ve said it many times, but I really didn’t let it sink in enough. Recently – I had a day alone delivering mail for about 12 hours. It was a long day full of blood, sweat and tears. Quite literally too – there is no telling how many paper cuts that bled that day. It started out chilly but got up into the 70’s and I actually broke a sweat a few times while moving things around in the truck. But mostly, it was a day of tears.

That week had been a true emotional roller coaster. From the fears of losing my Dad in the midst of his heart problems and surgery – to a huge let down of a special weekend event that got canceled due to the circumstances surrounding my Dad’s surgery and me having to work for my mom. I was angry. I was depressed. I was hurt. I was relieved. I was every kind of emotion possible all wrapped up in an exhausted woman on a beautiful Saturday.

I prayed a lot that day. I’m sure people passing by probably thought I needed to be committed because God and I had some arguments, some heartfelt pleas for help and a few moments of sheer surrender. I looked at everything my life has been (the past part) and what it has become (the present part) and I once again felt the hard kick in my “arse” that reminded me I have much to be thankful for.

I realized I had become one of those people who simply took for granted the good things in their life. I didn’t feel that it was owed to me, but my lack of appreciation and thanks made it appear that way. I realized how ungrateful I had/have been toward my boyfriend. It hurt to sit back and really see how often he had let go of his own hopes and dreams in his life just so I wouldn’t be hurt. You know you have a gem when they stifle things they want to say or do because they know that although they aren’t wrong or bad – your past and your past pains could make you view them that way. My past – My anger – My inability to truly let go and move on to become a better person – all of that has prevented HIM from having what he has wanted and deserved for so long. Yet he never complains.

I’ve grown a lot over the last two years. I’ve learned to forgive. I’ve learned to let go. I’ve learned to accept how wrong I was and how prideful I have been at times. I’ve learned to embrace myself and just be ME. Unfortunately – the process of getting here (and the continued process there WILL be) have been tough on the man who has loved me through it all. Sitting in a truck delivering mail alone – God really showed me how I am a petty and selfish person. He showed me how lucky I am to have a man at my side who wants to help me always. Who supports my hopes and dreams and who has willingly sacrificed his own just to help me see mine come true.

Yes, sometimes looking at where you have been before can truly open your eyes and your heart to the good of where you are right now. I haven’t had anything to complain about – but I certainly haven’t said thank you nor shown appreciation like I should have. It hurts. It’s embarrassing. It’s actually quite humiliating to admit how ungrateful I have been. I’m looking at my present right now – I’m rejoicing over the place I am in and I hope that those simple words – well – they make a difference in someone’s life. I hope someone takes a look at their past too and realizes how blessed they are in the present and makes the choice to show the present (whoever that may be) how grateful they are for them.

Journey To Virginland by Armen Melikian - Book Review & Giveaway!

Yet again I have had the privilege of reading a book that is unique in literature today. I can’t explain how truly excited I am to be chosen to read Journey to Virginland by Armen Melikian. It was by and large a book unlike anything I’ve ever read before.

From the first page I was pulled in and intrigued by the oddities I was reading. Not a typical romance, mystery or even suspense novel – this book takes a look at things from a level I’ve never went to. From the viewpoint of Dog – we see a fictional world that mirrors our own in many ways.

Imagine complete blatant honesty without worry of censorship about religion, sexuality, war, politics and relationship and you will have a good idea of the book I am speaking of today. Some might say Dog is full of sadness and should be pitied for his view of this fictional Virginland (albeit somewhat mirrored image of America). For myself – I think that Dog uses what most of us do just to manage each day – a bit of humor, a lot of inner strength and a wee bit of motivational disgust with how things are.

Journey to Virginland holds a raw bit of honesty for each of us. Whether it be your take on the political situation – our military – the ridiculous “wars” we have fought in recent years or simple relationships with the opposite sex – you can find a niche in this book to sink your teeth into. Following Dog through the 3 year journey that is upside down and opposite of what we generally see (or admit to seeing) was eye opening and motivating. As a Christian – the theme was harsh at times and boldly made me swallow my pride and admit wrongness in areas. I fear some would consider it blasphemous in the conversations between Dog and God or Dog and Satan – but in all honesty – I feel it’s MORE honest and real than the faux “prayers” we see commonly spouted.

One passage regarding “Paradise” and the changes therein struck me deeply:

“Truly there has come into being a society which is of no use to imperialists.

Paradise has gone from an ‘open museum’ to an open orduretum. The lotus withers, dogs suffocate, life goes kaput.”

How true these words are in reference to our supposed Paradise. Again – I am shocked to read a book of this honesty, this caliber literately, this brilliance in today’s time. Highly reviewed by scholars and authors worldwide – I know it has impacted and will impact lives. I only wish it could become the “Twilight” of this time – a book that sweeps across the social classes and impacts everyone opening their eyes to the destruction WE have created in our world – the lies we have covered up and the hypocrisy that plagues what use to be Christianity and Faith.

Thanks to Armen Melikian for the wonderful autographed copy of his novel. I can honestly say this was a read I wasn’t prepared for and was floored by. It has left me reeling with thoughts/ideas/plans/desires for my life and future in respect to how I treat the world around me – how I view our government and political situation but especially how I look at my God and my example as a true Christ Follower. To get a loan or not get a loan! That is the Question!

Going back to school has definitely been a challenge for me. Between hours spent in class, doing homework and research and the lack of sleep because of that – I feel like I will never get caught up. The past month has had many obstacles in the way of getting my normal job – school and family responsibilities done. On top of that – there are the added financial strains of going back to school.

If you are an older student (meaning anyone who doesn’t go directly from high school to college) you probably understand fully what I am talking about. Yes, there are scholarships, grants and funds available depending on your income level and grades that will help pay for your college education – BUT – there are still outside expenses that come up. For most scholarships/grants you have to maintain a full time course load. Let me tell you – it’s nearly impossible to juggle full time school – full time work and full time family/child responsibilities. So – something generally has to give. Either you take fewer classes and lose part of your funding or you work less and lose part of your regular income. That’s when people start looking at student loans more and more.

To take a loan out or not can be a really tough decision. One I’ve been toying with lately myself. Although I am managing okay at the moment, I know that next semester will be even more difficult on me and my boyfriend financially. In many ways – I’d much rather get a loan now and ease the burden on him (and our relationship) than to continue stressing our budget and relationship. When I am done with school – it’s more likely I will have a higher/better income and be better suited to pay back on student loans. Yet…there are so many “what ifs” involved that I am left with legal pad in hand and a list of pros and cons being sorted out.

Have you ever taken out a payday loan? I’m sure you’ve seen the places locally that do it. You go in with pay stubs and some personal information and they loan you a percentage of your next paycheck to you. It helps you in a tight moment now – but once that paycheck gets here – you are obligated to pay back the amount they owed plus most of the time a pretty hefty fee. Well, it’ a similar thing with Student Loans. You get what you need ahead of time and it helps you manage through a really tough/tight spot – but if you aren’t careful – you begin a cycle of borrowing that is almost impossible to stop.

What do you think? Student loans to help make things easier now with hopes of being able to pay back later? Or simply continue in the stress and strain currently?

Gym Update: Week 6 still Fat and Sassy!!

I haven’t done a gym update in a few weeks. I know…I know…I said I wouldn’t slack on that in my new healthier lifestyle – but I have. Oh, I’ve been to the gym – but instead of going 3 or 4 times a week it’s been more like once or twice. Mind you – life has been more than a little hectic for me. Between being at the hospital with my Dad during surgery, working for him and my mom, taking care of my grandparents as usual as well as attempting to keep up with school I seriously have NOT had the time.

So – I have no big/major updates as far as the gym goes – but I can say that I took a walk with my boyfriend a couple of times over the weekend and although it was a bit harder going up and down the hills than I would like, it was still a HUGE improvement over only two or three months ago. Even my lack of active exercise at the gym the last week or two hasn’t changed that I am getting healthier.

Remember what I said originally about being active even if you can’t afford a gym membership? This is so true. Parking at the end of the parking lot and walking the few extra steps – walking the half mile to the gas station instead of driving there to pick up the Sunday newspaper – doing a few crunches/sit ups or push ups in the living room floor while your son watches cartoons – doing lunges, squats and bends while dusting or vacuuming – the possibilities are endless.

Don’t let a busy schedule or lack of money keep you from being active. Three times a day spend a minimum of ten minutes doing something to get your heart rate up. Surely we could drop a half hour of Facebook surfing or Pinterest pinning to do that?

Don’t sit on the couch – get up and move!

Nutrisystem Week 4: Emotional Eating and the Program

When I started with the Nutrisystem Success Program I was admittedly dubious. I knew I had a VERY long way to go, but I wasn't sure I could do it. This week was one in which my doubts came up once again. It was my hardest week by far. With many emotional and physical struggles of the last month catching up to me, I found it difficult to stick with the plan. Not only did I eat outside the plan a few times, but I also couldn't find time to work out at all this week.

I am definitely an emotional eater. When stress is high, I turn to food for comfort. This week was evidence of that. BUT - by Friday I was back on track in all areas. I managed to get my head, heart and body straight. Although I didn't lose as much as I would have wanted, I still lost something and this week is off to a great start already.

Week of 2/12/12 - 2/18/12 PROS:

(1) Nutrisystem Forum Support has an awesome base of men and women who have "been there done that" to vent and cry to. Not only do they understand the struggles I am having now, they have suggestions and solutions to overcome them.

(2) The Awesome Team has been great to work with me on choosing better food items since my last order there were several items I just didn't care for. Not so much that the Nutrisystem was bad as much as not my personal taste (I don't like meatloaf or pot roast normally - definitely not Nutrisystem). Suggested substitutions and encouragement to not lose hope helped tremendously.

(3) Nutrisystem Fudge Brownies - need I say more? Mmmm....

Week of 2/12/12-2/18/12 CONS:

(1) Backlash of emotions and feelings from the stress of the last week totally boiled over into me being a sobbing mess that only wanted pints of Ben & Jerry's instead of good healthy foods.

(2) Pasta dishes that taste yummy are still beginning to get a bit old. As much as I like marinara based pasta dishes, I think I've had my fill for awhile. Nutrisystems are yummy - but I get food burnout EASY.

(3) Less exercise meant less energy and poor attitude.

The Birth of Hope by Jeane Rhodes, PhD - A Book Review

I am an avid reader (at least when I have time!) and I rarely shun away from something different our outside the norm. I tend to pick up sci-fi, mystery, romance and historical fiction for leisure reading but I do my fair share of devotional studies and items I would even consider self-help books. Reading the synopsis a few weeks ago on Business to Blogger for the book The Birth of Hope by Jeane Rhodes, PhD I was intrigued. I was once an unwed mother - not a teenager as this books main character is - but still - a young woman confused, hurting and afraid. I wanted to read it and see what this book would hold and how it might empower more unwed mothers when they are unsure.

I picked up the book when it came in the mail not really certain about what I was going to find. I knew in general it was a fictional book about a teenage girl in foster care who became pregnant and how she deals/dealt with it. I didn't realize how much more to it there was.

I try to be very honest in my reviews on this blog. I don't like to sugar coat or overlook things that may be derogatory or controversial. This book has good, bad, ugly and controversial all over it. So - this review is going to be a bit more in depth than I tend to give for a book - and I hope that the author (if she reads it) will understand and appreciate my thoughts.

(1) The writing itself is a bit on the "choppy" side. Although it's readable, I can't say it is an "easy read". To me, it comes across more textbook style less fiction style at times. That is probably because the information in it - is informative and educational for the most part. If you are looking for an easy read about teen pregnancy - this isn't it. It's a lot to take in and although I can't say it's horribly written - it isn't the best fictional writing I've come across either.

(2) Plot and general story line are good - characters are a little over the top to me. Almost unnatural at times, yet - I like the idea behind the book and thought the author did fairly well bringing out what she wanted us to see.

The two main characters are a teenage couple who both came from bad backgrounds and are currently in foster care. Their relationship started as a friendship and developed into a sudden sexual encounter. It wasn't a one night stand or fling - but a one time encounter that due to happenstance and human error - resulted in an unexpected pregnancy. I do love the fact that the author approached past sexual abuse in Tasha (female lead) and how that affected her ability to be intimate with her "boyfriend". The couple choose to go against the grain and not only carry the child to term but to keep and raise it themselves. The families they are living with are both supportive and yes, for typical foster care situations - this book is against the grain. It CAN be the norm - it just tends to not be the norm.

One of the other main characters in the book is Tasha's therapist. She along with both sets of foster parents, is very supportive of the teens decision to "do this together" and keep the baby. She works with Tasha in connecting with the baby as well as letting go of and seeking out her past. Their therapy sessions go into great detail in the book regarding how the therapist feels the past/present affect the infant in utero. There is definitely a lot of medical and psychological information here that could be considered controversial by some. The therapy sessions are not, well, my cup of tea I guess you could say. Although I agree that our past and present affects us as we are pregnant and ultimately the health of our baby - I felt an undertone of "if you think it - it will be" mentality in the therapist that I didn't agree with.

The foster family's, siblings and other characters in the book were good supports to the teens and seemingly well thought out by the author. Again I say it appears "choppy" and a bit unnatural at times - but overall a good plot for a book.

(3) The book looks in depth at how the female body is at it's prime when a woman is in her late teens and early twenties to become pregnant and carry a child to term. I wouldn't say it encouraged teen pregnancy at all - but I could see how others would carry that view. The physicians/therapists in the book made clear they didn't approve of the pregnancy yet also said that the young girl was in perfect shape/time, etc. to become pregnant. I agree - our bodies are made to have babies and the teen and early twenties are indeed our most fertile times as well as the best shape we are in physically. But that doesn't make it a wise choice. I even have problems with young couples in their early twenties who are married getting pregnant. I personally feel that being financially stable (or at least more so) and a bit more mature is much better for the child/family than simply being in the "prime" physically.

I did love the fact that although nobody was saying "great job getting knocked up at 16" they were supportive of the teens choice to not abort the baby and to become good parents to their child. We've all at least seen the magazines or blurbs about the teen pregnancy reality shows. Some of them glamorize it and some of them discourage it. Overall - reality is that teen pregnancy happens

Another aspect of this book that could be controversial to some but that I greatly appreciate is the openness to having a midwife instead of a physician attend your pregnancy. Also there is the mention and introduction of one of the foster mothers being a doula (a trained labor assistant). Although both of my pregnancies were followed by a physician and I gave birth in a hospital setting - after reading, researching and seeing others successful and easy pregnancies with midwives - I am a huge advocate of such if possible. I won't go so far as to be "okay" with home birthing (it scares the crap out of me) but I do think that we could do with a little more comfort and a lot less medical intervention (unless needed) in our pregnancies.

If you are looking for a book to scare your teenage son or daughter into not having sex or using precautions - this probably isn't the book for you. If you or your daughter/son is a teenager who is expecting a child or has a baby and is struggling to manage life, school, parenthood - this would be a good book for them to read. Maturity levels and good choices make a HUGE difference in the outcome of what could be considered the biggest mistake of their life.

In the end, I am still an advocate for abstaining from sex in the teen years. Ultimately - saving yourself for marriage would be the best choice, but I will be realistic and say I know it's unlikely that most boys and girls will or do these days. If a teen (or any person) chooses to be sexually active - they need to choose safety first. Not just birth control patches, pills, shots but also condoms. Double protection is the only protection in my book. Regardless of whether you can get pregnant or not - regardless of how much you trust your partner - you just don't know. Choosing a $5 box of condoms over a lifetime of STD outbreaks is worth it in my book.

Overall, I found the book to be interesting and something I'm glad I read. I did learn a few things I didn't already know and I was once again reminded to speak to my kids early and frankly about sex and it's consequences. I think that the author did a good job speaking what was obviously on her heart. Although I may not personally agree with all the thoughts/ideas/opinions within the book, I do respect anyone who would dare to put such controversial things out there so openly and publicly.

Nutrisystem Success Program Week 3

Well - I have made it to the three week mark on the Nutrisystem Success Program. Overall, I am still very pleased with everything about the program. The food (for the most part) has been tasty and filling. The ad-ins are easy to manage and the support on the forums as well as through my town representative with Nutrisystem has been wonderful. My only complaint is that I have had a LOT of added stress the last two weeks and have struggled to maintain the plan.

With my Dad in the hospital and now out of the hospital my schedule has been all over the place. I've been working differently, getting home later and struggling to manage everything. School and going to the gym have taken back burners to caring for my family this week. Meals have been quick, easy and on the road. I haven't managed the plan every day the way I know I should have.

(1) I only went to the gym one time this week. With the schedule changes and craziness of the last couple weeks I haven't had the extra time to workout. Yes, I know you are supposed to be able to fit it in - but sometimes - you simply can't. I have tried to get my three 10 minute extra exercises in each day though. Between the lifting, walking and running back and forth I've done delivering the mail and helping care for my dad, I haven't been sedentary at all - just not a full on regular workout like I would have liked.

(2) I hit a wall with the Nutrisystem foods. As I am receiving the program for free in exchange for my review of it - I did not get the chance to hand pick all of my foods. Some items (pantry items) I can choose each month - the frozen items get sent to me from what is their most popular lineup. There are a few meals in that group that are not items I would normally eat anyway - let alone with their program. I am not a meatloaf, Salisbury steak or mashed potato fan. On top of that, there are a few of the Chef's Inspired entrees that I simply don't care for at all. They aren't bad - probably to most quite good - but they aren't my personal taste. My other problem is that so many of the dinner entrees are pasta dishes with marinara sauce. They taste great - but I am one of those people who needs variety. Marinara every night gets old really quickly to me. So - it's been tough to be motivated each night when I at times really just wanted the chicken nuggets and fries my son was having! I had a few tough nights this week when I just didn't like or want what was in front of me and I gave in to the temptations of easy foods around me. I didn't go overboard, but I did add in some items that weren't good choices.

On a plus note: I found that the Nutriflakes Bran cereal was very good (add a little sliced banana and some truvia and it was great breakfast) as well as the meatball sub sandwich for lunch was very filling and surprisingly good. Overall, I'm still really pleased with the meals, the support and all that the Success Program provides me. I simply have had a very emotional and stressful few weeks and it's taken more will power than I expected to manage staying on the program fully. I hope/know next week will be much better.

That's still a 1.4 pound loss from last week bringing me to a total of 18.4 pounds lost!

In Kristine’s Shower is the home of some of the most sought after bath bombs, lotions, soaps, bubble baths and shower gels around. Although still a fairly small and personal operation – you will find a multitude of the products available nationwide at various bath product outlets.

I was excited to get the chance to review some of their top products. I have been a fan of handmade soaps for many years. As someone who suffers from seasonally dry skin, I love using handmade soaps (especially those made with lye) in the winter months as they seem to add a lot more moisture to my skin than traditional soaps purchased in department stores. I also love the opportunity to try different and unique scents. I find that handmade soaps have a pleasant scent that generally doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin nor overwhelm the senses.

I received a package from Kristine’s Shower that included a Shea Butter Bath Bomb, a small container of their Aloe Body Whip and bar of Appleberry soap. The packaging was simple yet classy. The body whip was especially unique in that it was dual colored (white and green) striped inside the small jar. The bath bomb was wrapped in tissue paper and the bar of soap was sealed in plastic with a cute emblem on the back. I found that for a smaller company the appearance of the products was mainstream and professional. The smells of all three products I received were clear and distinct. They were very pleasant and not overwhelming.

It took me longer than normal to do this review simply because I had to wait for an opportunity to use the bath bomb. Part of me wanted to tuck it away for a special occasion, but I also wanted to review it properly – so I waited until I had a chance to take a bath (unfortunately not something I get to do often). I wasn’t disappointed. After a couple of weeks of using the Appleberry soap consistently some of my dry skin issues are gone (plus my boyfriend thinks I smell really nice when I get out of the shower). The Aloe Vera body whip is AMAZING and very nourishing and the bath bomb was just as expected – great product, that made bath time a great way to relax and relieve stress.

Daddy's Little Girl - Forever and Always

I have always been a Daddy's girl. My Daddy was my first love. He was the first man to take care of me, provide for me and tell me I was beautiful. He wasn't perfect. In fact - he made a lot of mistakes. Sometimes I still look back and wonder, "what was he thinking?" - but in the end - my Daddy has loved me and done the best he knew how from the day I was born. And for that - I am one blessed daughter.

This past month has been a true roller coaster of emotions for me. I have known for some time that Daddy was ill, but never expected to be told he needed to have open heart surgery and a triple bypass done. In the back of my head I knew it was a possibility, but somehow just wanted to escape the thought and pretend it couldn't be that.

After going to the Heart Cath Lab a couple of weeks ago and finding he had three blockages that would require bypass surgery - my heart sank. It's such a common procedure these days it shouldn't have been any concern. But like I said before - it's MY Daddy. That makes it special. That makes it even more concerning.

The few days between the Cath Lab and the actual bypass surgery were torture on everyone in our family. Not only had Daddy become rather weak - his pain levels had increased drastically. It became a matter of fear he would have a heart attack before actually having the surgery. So much so that we couldn't leave him home alone. I personally wasn't going to chance it - especially after one ambulance ride due to chest pains that wouldn't go away. That night, he was stabilized and sent home - and I said it was ridiculous. Insurance wouldn't pay to keep him, even if he was at risk. I said something to my Daddy that night when he said it would be alright - he understood they didn't have a reason to keep him: "Yes, Daddy, they have a reason - you're MY Daddy and I don't want to lose you. That's ALL the reason they need."

That moment I realized something - I don't think there is any person on this earth that I love as much as I do my Daddy. I love my mom, I love my kids, I love my sister and I love my boyfriend - but my Daddy - well - He's My Daddy! Nobody can replace him in my life. There is no approval I want more than his.

Last week was the toughest week of my life. I sat by and watched them take my Dad in for what could have been a fatal surgery if something went wrong. And the worst part was - I couldn't be there. Because my parents are both mail contractors and I was one of the only subs they had to do their routes, I had to deliver mail while he was in surgery so my Mom could be there with him. Getting in the car after I said my "I love you" and "Jesus has this" was the toughest thing I'd ever done. Riding around all day waiting on updates was even more difficult. I was irritable, cranky, terrified and oh so relieved when I finally got the word from my Sister that he was done - in great shape and she had got to see him in ICU.

That night I went to visit him in ICU. We had been told not to expect any real understanding or awareness from him for another day or so. We had been told he would be in there for at least 48 hours and on the ventilator easily 24-48 hours. That was all routine and expected. Don't worry they said. I walked in to see him the first time and he opened his eyes, nodded his head, blinked, squeezed my hand and even gave me "the look". You know - the one ONLY your parents can give you. That was only 5 hours after surgery. You see - my Daddy is strong - he is a fighter - he wasn't going to let it get him down.

I came back at the later evening visiting hours and was told by the nurse that he would most likely have the ventilator out by midnight - less than twelve hours after surgery. So, I settled into the ICU waiting room to wait. I read a bit, dosed a bit, giggled in exhaustion with my sister and then startled awake at 2am when the nurse came to tell us he was awake - off the ventilator and ready to see us.

There are no words to describe the joy, relief and sheer overwhelming power of God when I walked in that room alongside my sister and saw my Daddy sitting up a little, awake and communicating normally. He was stitched up, weak, pale and a bit loopy because of the medicine, but he was still very much my Daddy. He told us he loved us. He was so very happy to be alive, and the tears I fought the whole time I was in the room fell the second I was alone.

I left the hospital that night/morning at about 3am and headed home. I cried the whole way home..and I struggled for the days after that to not break down every few minutes. I cannot imagine my life without my Daddy in it. I was not and am not prepared to loose him. Not now - not ever. I know the day will come, but I pray it's not for many more years.

Sasha, Extraordinary Dachshund Book Review

I recently received a new and different book to review: Sasha, Extraordinary Dachshund by CJ Adams. This book was definitely not in my typical reading list - I stick with mostly fictional works with an occasional devotional or self-help book. This memoir about a dog was NOT one I would have picked from a bookshelf or library shelf. BUT....that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it!

Surprising to me, I was taken quickly by the book and the stories CJ Adams shared about her beloved family that included a very special little dachshund named Sasha. The book shares how CJ was faced with the decision to put her dog to sleep because traditional veterinary medicine was not sufficient. In a desperate move to keep from losing her littlest family member, she turned to holistic veterinary medicine. Surprisingly to most - her decision kept her from having to say goodbye to Sasha.

This book is a cute easy read that definitely appeals to those who are dog lovers or in particular - those who are advocates for holistic medicine (both in animals and people). At a little under 200 pages it is a quick read and one I could foresee finding on coffee tables at friends houses. Definitely a good book to give as a gift to someone you know who has a Dachshund, is into holistic medicines or likes a heartwarming story of how people and animals overcome the unexpected.

This book actually came in handy for me while recently waiting in the hospital while my Dad was in surgery and recovery. An easy read that was encouraging during tough times!

Week 2 Nutrisystem in the Hospital?

My second full week of the Nutrisystem Success program began with me in the hospital. Not for MY health - but waiting, sitting, waiting and walking the halls as my Dad faced a triple bypass procedure. Can I say stress & me generally means: Emotional Eating!?

Needless to say, in a matter of moments my life went from busy to downright impossibly hectic. Not only did I have/want to be at the hospital with my family - but since my mom is a contracted mail carrier and I am her sub - I was the ONLY person who could take over for her during the surgery and subsequent hospital stay so she could be with my Daddy. My regular work, school, gym, family schedule got thrown at the window as me and my boyfriend took on the role of mail carrier, taxi, handy man and ICU waiting room sitters.

Thankfully - Jesus saw fit to get my Daddy through surgery safely and I even got to be there the first night when he unexpectedly got the ventilator off after only a few hours and was able to talk to him and see him almost immediately. God was SOOOO good to us! But - during the crazy schedule, I did find myself tested a bit in my diet.

I had a few snacks/meals that weren't great - I won't go into details - but suffice it to say I did not stick 100% to the program all week long. But I DID make good choices overall and I still managed to drop weight! I substituted a few extra salads and some grilled chicken sandwiches from fast food places as I had to, but mostly stuck with my Nutrisystem Success Foods. The breakfast granola bars and the chicken salad packet as well as the meal replacement bars at lunches were true life savers! Dinner was a bit harder to manage as there is a severe lack of microwave in the hospital we were at. Evening meals were spent half and half at home eating my planned meals and half "out".

Let's talk numbers though. Last week I only managed the gym one time but was overly active between the extra walking at the hospital and the much more demanding physically job of carrying the mail. So...

January 3rd Start Weight: 229.4

February 5th Weigh In: 212.4

Total Loss in one month: 17 pounds!!!! Approximately 6 of those pounds lost while on the Nutrisystem Success Plan!!

I don’t know about you – but there is nothing quite as relaxing and soothing as a good pedicure. Alzheimer's is a Dance

Have you ever thought you knew somebody and understood them but turn around and it seems they are something completely different?

This can happen in any relationship we are in, and I certainly have been in a few like it in my life. Most recently though – I have found in caring for my Granny that some days she seems to be somebody I don’t even recognize. I leave one afternoon having spent the day with the woman I grew up with – sweet, caring, a little bit on the naïve side but always loving and generous. The next morning I arrive and it’s as if some stranger has taken her place. When did the aliens start abducting my Granny for a night and leaving this strange woman in her place?

I know it hurts her as much as it hurts me. I know many parts of this disease she simply doesn’t understand at all. She can’t comprehend fully why or how things come up missing and gets hurt and angry when we mention she is the one that hid them or threw them away. She feels like we are making fun of her all the time, when in reality – we work so hard to be gentle, respectful and understanding. She thinks some of her family doesn’t love her anymore because they no longer stop in for a visit. It’s hard to explain to her that it’s much harder for them to see her in an angry or disoriented state than she can imagine.

I have worked in the medical field off and on for ten years now. I have been around many Alzheimer’s patients in many situations. I have seen patients with severe dementia that seriously thought they had been abducted by aliens, abused by family members or were millionaires on a luxury vacation. What happens in our brains as we age or are affected by disease amazes me. From a medical standpoint I am curious about its origins, what its causes are and how it can be prevented. From a granddaughter and caregivers standpoint I hate it. I want it gone. I curse the day it became a problem in our life and I would give anything for a cure that would not only stop it in its tracks but repair the damage done already.

This journey continues to amaze me. The little things that make a difference surprise me every day, and the rational normal moments that appear give me hope and break my heart all at once. I think about the book/movie The Notebook almost every single day. The staff and doctors had no hope for her – but he knew that woman he loved was in there somewhere – if only he could reach her for a moment, and they could dance. Each day I get out of my car, take a deep breath and walk up the ramp to the door. As I open the door I pray that today is a day when there is a smile greeting me and happiness that I am there. I know once I cross that threshold I am there for the duration regardless of what greets me.

The days of knowing and understanding are behind me…now are the days of loving and having compassion regardless of the actions and words that are presented. Just like in the movie – I wait for the days when I can see my Granny as she was – those glimmers of the dance.
