Filmmaking in Venice with YOU CREW Film Professional

Your ‘once in a lifetime’ chance, to be part of a  film crew and make a short film with an English-speaking film professional and visit the incredible city of Venice, Italy in 2012. As with all You Crew filmmaking programmes, all group members take turns assuming different production roles throughout filming, such as director, camera, lighting, sound and presenter.

Crew Places Available:
Maximum 5 persons in each Crew – (because of group number restrictions for filming in Venice). Please note there are no limits to how many Crews we can have filming at any one time.

Subject of Documentary:
Suggested title of  film documentary to be made  ’Venice: Behind the Mask – a filmmakers insight’
How the subject is approached and handled will be up to the group to decide. We are looking at shooting a 15 minute documentary.

First Available Dates:
Arrive in Venice 21st May 2012
5 days filming.
Depart Venice 27th May 2012

Pre production starts with the group via the internet before departure to Italy: Research, Storyline, Script ideas and storyboard.

The Schedule:
21 May 2012  -  Arrival & evening orientation/ production meeting over drinks. Info packs, maps, places to eat and drink will be provided.

22 -25 May 2012 – Official start of 5-day Filmmaking programme. We start with getting to know the camera kit- production meeting to discuss the day’s shots and crew role allocation. When we wrap for the day we will be taking a look at the material that has been shot with the editor and deciding what is needed for the next day.

Hours will be flexible so there will be free time to enjoy Venice. We aim to spend 5 hours shooting a day plus an hours’ run through of the day’s shots. Please note there might be early morning and night shoots.

26 May 2012 – Last minute shots that might be needed, editing and Filmmakers Wrap Party in the evening:

27 May 2012 – Departure- Unless of course you decide to continue your visit to Italy..:-)

Weekend Filmmaking Workshops in The English Language

with British Professional Filmmaker Dick Dodd

YOU CREW are holding weekend filmmaking workshops for university students in NE Italy starting in early 2012.

Each workshop programme will be held over 4 weekends, approx 1 month apart and will be conducted in the English Language.

This is a great opportunity for film/media students to take part in the production of a short documentary: pre production – shooting – post production and practice their English language skills at the same time.

Many film students will want to work on English speaking crews/productions at the start or during their film careers. This is the perfect introduction.

As with all You Crew filmmaking programmes, within each workshop group all members will take turns assuming different production roles throughout filming, such as director, camera, lighting, sound and presenter.

Part of the learning process of filmmaking is the skill of effective team work (no one person can make a good film entirely by themselves).

In addition all members will be involved in the pre-production roles of research, location scouting, storylines and story boards as well as post -production editing.

Applicants Criteria:

Englsih Language:You Crew filmmaking programmes are conducted in English. An intermediate knowledge of English would be useful. There will be an Italian – English speaker on the team to help out.

Computer Skills: It is strongly advised that all participants are reasonably familiar with using computers – Basic editing skills will be taught to the group in post- production.

Filmmaking skills: None are necessary but if you have been involved in filmmaking already ..great!!

Camera Equipment: The camera kit is provided by You Crew. We will be using the Sony HVRHD1000 on these workshops.

Workshop Hours: We are looking at 6 hour days. These will be flexihours for the shooting days, to take into consideration the shooting schedule ( and we will make sure it fits in with the applicant’s schedule as well)

Food and Drink: The applicants need to bring with them what they need. There will be a break for lunch

Documentary Film Subject:

There will be a suggested film subject for each documentary filmmaking weekend workshop programme. How the subject is approached and handled will be up to the group to decide.The aim is to make a 12-15 minute documentary.

In association with The Language Club, we are offering a limited programme of filmmaking courses during the summer of 2012 for students from 13 to 19 years of age. The summer camps will be located in Friuli Venezia Giulia, NE Italy.

These week long courses will be a hands on documentary filmmaking experience, conducted in the English language. They will cover pre-production; ‘on location’ filming  and basic post production.

What will be taught during a one week Summer Camp:

• A basic understanding of video production

Introduction to Student Documentary Filmmaking Programmes on Location in the English Language.

These programmes are aimed at  film students who want to experience hands on  filmmaking and who need to learn or improve their English language skills and English language students. All students will benefit and improve their understanding of the English language in a creative, working, professional environment that has a purpose.

How are You Crew programmes different?

Good question…. and there are a number of equally good answers.

The average language course is classroom bound.

The average first year film course is classroom bound. It takes a while to progress from classroom to actually being hands on in the case of film students.

Whether you are a film student or a language student, these filmmaking programmes will add valuable experience to your overall studies.

You Crew promotes the idea that all of the students will participate in the making of a documentary in a foreign location using only the language they are studying….in this case English.

We will put together crews for filming each documentary under the guidance of a professional team. Not only will the crew be filming but they will also be involved in the production and research side of the documentary.

The crew will be rotated on a daily or half daily basis giving each student a chance to experience and experiment with different roles. In this way, every student will, at some point during the shoot, be the Director, the Sound Recordist, the Camera Operator, Continuity, Follow Focus, an Assistant, a Grip, the Location Manager, Transport Manager and Runner.

Each of these roles carries its own responsibility and is essential to the efficient running of a film crew.

At the end of filming, every team member will have been in all of the areas of responsibility of a film crew.

Filmmaking can be enjoyable and exciting, particularly on a foreign location. Working as a team and accepting the responsibility of the various role changes will be beneficial in future work situations.

Having Finished Filming:

• You will have built up your language skills in a working and foreign environment.
• You will be infinitely more knowledgeable about the workings of a real film crew.
• Your confidence levels about your own abilities will be enhanced .
• You will have lots of fun and a documentary to use as a possible visual CV

You Crew Junior Filmmaking Workshops Programme.

YOU CREW Junior filmmaking workshops, led by Dick  Dodd, a British filmmaking  professional , are designed to stimulate observation, analysis and communication using the English Language.

Today’s adults and students of all ages, now more than ever, use visual media to communicate at home, work and university and in social settings. Video has become an integrated part of all our lives in one way or another.

In association with The Language Club in Pordenone NE Italy we are offering  a course of 4 workshops for young filmmakers to have a go at making a short video as part of a crew ( co-workshop members). This is a great way to learn a bit about film production; from storyline to storyboards and script to scouting locations, shooting film and editing – all in the English language.
