KQED's You Decide - Economy

You Decide is an online devil’s advocate designed to challenge your point of view on current economic issues. Perhaps the data in these activities will encourage you to reconsider your position... or maybe not. But one thing is certain. The issues Americans face are complex, our opinions are passionately held, and the devil is in the details. Think you know where you stand? You just might surprise yourself.

Is a green economy the key to job growth?

It's on the tip of everyone's tongue: Green Jobs. For supporters, the nascent green economy not only holds the promise of slowing climate change, but also offers the immediate benefit of jump-starting the ailing economy, creating jobs in everything from construction and manufacturing to engineering and research.

But even if we invest aggressively in the green economy, the potential number of jobs created could be soberingly low.

With tuition and other expenses steadily rising, the cost of higher education has unquestionably become a significant burden for many. But if data from the current recession is any indicator, that education certainly pays back. So is the potential return on investment enough to offset the initial cost?

Federal, state and local governemnts are forecast to spend a total of about $6.5 trillion this fiscal year. So how does that money get spent?

After the housing bubble burst, many people ended up owing more on their mortgages than their homes are worth.

Does it make financial sense to keep paying mortgage those mortgages, in the hopes that home values will return? Or doe it makes more sense to treat an underwater mortgage as a bad investment, and simply walk away?

In good times, we see job opportunity explode in the suburbs. But in bad times, are these suburban jobs more secure than their urban counterparts? They used to be. Today, not so much.

Is now a good time to buy a home?

Among the many casualties of this recession, perhaps none has been felt more profoundly than the damage to the housing market. Bound to the American Dream, the housing market's collapse extracted not only a sizable portion of our investments, but also a bit of our faith in the long-held notion that home ownership is a sure way to build equity.

Now, as several markets begin to show signs of new life, comes the inevitable question: Does a huge dip in housing prices make now a good time to buy? Or is long-term renting a better investment?

Check out our chart of ownership costs versus rental costs for the country's top twenty markets, and make the decision for yourself.

Should the federal government pay for laid-off workers to go back to school?

With the national unemployment rate at a level higher than it has been in nearly three decades, many American workers are heading back to school, hoping that a retooled résumé will give them the edge they need in order to reboot their careers. Hundreds of thousands of laid-off workers are receiving training via federally subsidized programs, created by the 1998 Workforce Investment Act (WIA). These programs provide them with everything from career counseling services to tuition assistance for retraining.

But like so much in these topsy-turvy economic times, it's unclear just how beneficial these programs are. In fact, a recent study commissioned by the Department of Labor found that laid-off workers derive scant benefit from these retraining programs.

So, what's your take? Is the small long-term financial benefit of job training worth the larger short-term dip in income when you need it most? Does the Dislocated Worker Program seem worth the government's investment?

Think you know where you stand on this issue? Vote now.

Should you spend more money to help boost the economy?

It's no secret: Americans have increasingly spent more and more since World War II. And less savings and more debt can't be a good thing for our bank accounts. After all, what led to the recession if not easy access to credit and irresponsible spending? But spending all that money hasn't necessarily been a bad thing: Our disposable income has kept up with our spending. Plus, with consumer spending making up a good chunk of our GDP, you could say our economy – and its recovery – depends on our willingness to spend.

So what's the right way to get our economy back on track? Grow our savings accounts or spend more money?

Think you know where you stand on this issue? Vote now.

Is Stimulus money for transportation and infrastructure going to the wrong states?

Nearly $100 billion has been made available for transportation and infrastructure improvements as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (commonly referred to as the stimulus plan). These projects - from paving highways to improving border security to environmental cleanup - are expected to create more jobs than any other piece of the stimulus plan. So which states deserve the most attention?

Check out our chart showing each state's share of GDP, unemployment rate and stimulus money received, and decide for yourself.
