We will be heading over to San Francisco to visit my sis, niece and bro-in-law. I will be away for 2 months (also leaving for Canada late July for about a week plus) and will be back on Malaysian soil on Sept 18.

I hope to still be able to blog a bit now and then while I'm in the States, so do drop by to check if I've had time to post. The four of us had gone to an office nearby in the area and the folks at the office told us good things about Assam House which was within walking distance.

We had heard about Assam House but didn't know that they had a branch in Medan Gopeng. From a little setup back in 1991, it is well known for serving up delicious food and has attracted many famous and celebrity patrons through the years. The restaurant facade itself was colourful and stepping into the bright, clean and spacious setup brought us relief from the scorching sun. The menu had an ample line up and we quickly narrowed down to four dishes as we were really hungry (it was slightly past 2 p.m).

Of course, we had to order the famous Curry Assam Fish Head, RM18.90 (I tried everything of this dish except the fish itself, hahaha...). I must say that I loved the curry assam gravy, done Indian style. It had the right consistency and we were delighted with this fragrant and delicious dish.

With the four of us being spicy food lovers, we unanimously agreed on ordering the Mixed Belacan Vegetables (RM8.90) - brinjal, petai (stinky beans), long beans and sweet beans stir fried with belacan and onions. The taste was impeccable and it was spicy enough for us to give it thumbs up.

We needed to balance the spicy dishes to give our palate a change and we ordered the Golden Beancurd with Mushrooms and Vegetables (RM7.90). Once again, we enjoyed this dish as the beancurd was aromatic, soft and smooth. Together with the rest of the ingredients and the light gravy, it was a welcome change.

Our final dish, Butter Mantis Prawn (RM13.90). We found the mantis prawn small in size. There simply wasn't enough oomph biting into them as there weren't much meat. However, our criteria was still met in terms of taste. It wasn't oily and didn't taste oily; obviously the chef has good temperature control over the wok.

Assam House serves a range of Asian cuisine at reasonable prices and pride themselves on this fact. Based on this visit of ours, they can stake such a claim as we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch.

Read "Just Me" review at this branch HERE

Assam House Restaurant (website)
2, Medan Gopeng 2
31350 Ipoh
Perak

Tel : 05-313 2223
(Opens Daily from 11.30 am - 3 pm, 6pm - 10 pm)

Main Branch
29, Persiaran Greentown 4
Greentown Business Center
30450 Ipoh
Perak

Tel : 05-243 7851

To be continued ... yet more on Ipoh food!

Puppy Siblings' Last Photo Shoot

It was like only yesterday when JoJo gave birth to her litter of 7 puppies. That was on April 20. As at today, only 4 of the 7 puppies are still with Glorious Jade (the grandma! hahaha...) and more will be leaving the "nest". With Glorious Jade and Shen helping to round them up, I was able to take a group pic of all 7 puppies together. Luckily a few of them were sleeping/sleepy :o)

Boy! Have they grown (looking back at this pic on the side here when Pinky was just a couple of hours old)! They looked so happy and healthy. Here's something to remember them by. Glorious Jade, this post is dedicated to you...

Sleepy as usual!

Siblings!

Pinky?

Magnificent Se7en!

Family Potrait

They just love sleeping with their paws dipped (head too!) into the water bowl! Chuan Fatt, Ipoh - Curry Noodles & Others

After having gone on several mini trips to Ipoh for food and had several curry noodles HERE and HERE that could not match the one I had many eons ago. I had no recollection where it was, that is....till now! YAY! When an old friend came visiting and mentioned about making a short trip to Ipoh and bringing me back to this place for the curry noodles, I just had to go!

Yes, it was a day trip to Ipoh that we had embarked on. We had a mission - To eat and to transport a certain VIP back to Kuala Lumpur! Starting early morning, we went straight for the jugular - curry noodles at Chuan Fatt! I didn't recall the place having ceiling high shiny light green tiles but the stall in front of the shoplot was exactly the same as it was before when I was here more than 10 years ago.

I found it! I found it at last - by far the best curry noodles I've tasted in Ipoh, right here in Chuan Fatt. Of course, different strokes for different folks as there are quite a number of eateries serving their own version that have their own legion of fans I'm sure :o). Here you can pick your toppings, mine was shredded chicken, char siew, roast pork siew yoke and pork rind. The soup had the right amount of spice, not too thick and somehow the whole ensemble just hit a home run with all of us. Do bear in mind that curry noodles in Ipoh is different from the more coconut milk laden soup version in Klang Valley.

Top it up with some crispy deep fried chicken wings on the side - essential munchies when eating curry noodles here. Hahaha.... (Oh, the Ice Coffee a.k.a Kopi Ping is good too)

Read reviews from GPS Good Finder (with GPS coordinates) and Motormouth (with map link) on Chuan Fatt.

Kedai Makanan Chuan Fatt
294, Jalan Pasir Puteh,
31650 Ipoh, Perak

After picking up the "precious" cargo, it was soon time for tea. Now, we wanted sometime light and they wanted Roti Canai! I was not expecting much but when we arrived at Restaurant GoodShed, I was charmed by this little place. This has been one of their favourite place for Roti Canai and Teh Tarik for decades!

GoodShed; cosy homely feeling and with a wide open area, it's a partly wooden/tiled house - giving one the impression of eating in someone's house!

Roti Canai - The making of the flat bread

The Roti Bawang (onions) I had came with a lovely shade of golden brown. Done just right and spot on. The whiff of onions was aromatic and the flat bread was crispy and tasty. The gravy's at room temperature though, would have preferred it to be warm. Look at the folks, closely hovering over the stall. Why is this stall surrounded by folks who all seem very eager and anxious at the same time? Eager as one can get their hands on one of the better nyonya kuihs sold in Klang Valley and anxious (just like how EatingAsia felt) as they don't know whether there is still any left when it's their turn! Hahaha....

At times, there would be some waiting even before Ah Mun arrives, immediately surrounding him as he sets up his stall. He's been doing this for more than two decades, setting up his stall just outside Nam Chuan Coffeeshop in Lorong Ara Kiri 2, Lucky Gardens.

So, apart from going to Nam Chuan for my fave Sarawak Laksa, Abacus Seeds and Char Kway Teow, I will usually make a pit stop here too if I'm in lingering in the area as the kuih stall opens at around 3pm till all is sold out....which can be within two hours on a good day!

There's a rather wide variety of kuihs here as you can see. Gosh! What should I get? Such a dilemma! Hahaha....that's the usual thought running through my mind every single time I'm here as it's a rather tough decision with all the goodies right in front of you.

There's my fave ondeh-ondeh .... While googling this, I found out that the famous FatBoyBakes actually made ondeh-ondeh back in 2005, here's his post with recipe included!

and Rice Cakes (woon chye ko) too with the preserved radish

Oh...another favourite of mine, the Kuih Lapis. It's not overly sweet which is how I like it. I still eat it like a kid, savouring it layer by layer :p. The Kuih Talam here is also good. Each piece is RM0.90 but it's a rather large one, it makes about two pieces of the kuihs one gets from places like Nyonya Colours. As you can see, this was around 4pm and the tray is about 3/4 gone! See what I mean by anxious? Hahaha....

So, get here on time if you wanna make sure there's something left for you ! All the stuff here is good! Hahaha....As I made my way back to the car, I turned around and there is still a stream of never ending customers at the stall. For those leaving in Petaling Jaya, you can try out Florence's kuih in Section 17.

Ah Mun's still surrounded by even more anxious customers (you can barely see him)!

Mmm...how long does it take for me to eat a whole tray of kuih lapis, layer by layer???
- wmw

BBQ Buffet @ Pick n' Brew Glenmarie, Shah Alam

Pick n' Brew Glenmarie recently started running a BBQ Buffet every first Friday of the month. Having missed the first round in May, I made it a point to drop by to check out this fiery deal in June which is at a reasonable price of RM40+/pax.

This Glenmarie outlet is different from the one in 1 Utama as it's located within the Wisma CNI building. It's definitely cosier and I prefer coming here (if only it was nearer though, so I still end up going to the outlet in 1 Utama more often than not). Check out my post on Pick n' Brew in Glenmarie HERE and I'm sure you'll know what I mean.

Here are some of the pics of the food I chomped on! There were quite a number of dishes I didn't eat as I was too full. Hahaha....

Lots of hot action going on at the outdoor area .... Yummy Lamb Brochettes being barbequed. They have a variety of sauces for all the different type of meats that they have. I ate my favourite lamb the most and a bit of the chicken & beef! They have also placed other warm food in this area too; pasta, flavoured rice, vegetables to name a few.

Meanwhile on the inside of Pick n' Brew...other goodies are laid out. These are Assorted Bean Salad.

I didn't eat these fish bites served in shot glass. Looks really interesting even to a non fish fan like me. Should have tried some but by the time I was done with my favourites, I didn't have tummy room for these....hahaha...

These Grilled Tomato Slices were lovely!

<img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2447/3657640400_28d7aeffc8_o.jpg" alt="Corn on <span class=" error="" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10" />

Oooh....Corn on the cob! I had three of these!

Diet plans FOILED! Hahaha...Several of the dishes wrapped in foil, thrown and cooked on the grill. From Left : Potatoes, Mushrooms and Seafood

There's cheesecake too! But what I ate most from the dessert spread was .....

Bread & Butter Pudding - I had several helpings of it and each one was "drowned" by the amount of light custard cream I put on it! One can help themselves to as much cream as they want and that's why I enjoyed this so much! :o)

Hmmm....next BBQ Buffet is coming up soon next Friday, 3 July! I should round up some friends and head to Pick n' Brew Glenmarie next week!

Oh well, there's also Subak...(that will be in a different post!)".

Well, I'll do just that...let's see what Subak has to offer! Subak is a turn off to the right at the traffic lights where if one goes straight and under the flyover, one would head towards Bora Asrama. I arrived at Subak with Moo & Buddy at around 7.30 and looks like I had almost lost whatever little sunlight I had by that time. So, photo taking was a bit tricky and some shots are a bit blur, thank goodness I had a little bit of help from the lighting there.

The staff here is attentive and friendly, ushering us along to the inner part of the restaurant. I noticed that it isn't as big as Bora Asmara, having lesser tables but the ambiance here is nicer though. I'm not sure whether it was that dark that I had missed a page but I found the Asian & Western menu line up less extensive as Bora Asmara. For drinks, we ordered smoothies which I didn't take a pic of but the mango and mix berries smoothies we had were refreshingly nice but I would have preferred it to be a bit thicker.

Having read up on several blogs earlier, I ordered my favourite soto, "Pak Ajelan's Balinese Style Chicken Soto" (RM10/USD2.80). I wasn't that hungry and longed for some soupy stuff as I was also a little under the weather. I absolutely loved the soto - compressed rice, vegetables, shredded chicken with a lovely begedil (potato cutlets) in thick chicken consomme that packs a punch. A tad salty for my friends who just tasted the soup on its own though. Eat and drink this wonderful little bowl up (yes, finish the spicy soy-chilli too!). Lip smacking goodness....

We also ordered "Ibu Yati's Gado-Gado" (RM10/USD2.80) - vegetable salad in a crispy popiah skin bowl. The "bumbu" peanut sauce that came with it was rich and aromatic. However, it's a small portion, too little even if one were to have this starter, let alone for the three of us! Hmmm...seems they haven't decided how to present this dish as it looks different from each of the blogs that I saw (unless the food bloggers rearranged it, hehehe..) but one thing we all agreed on was that it was delicious!

As we waited (food was served promptly), we enjoyed looking around the surroundings.

Moo's Curry Mee with Fresh Water Prawn (RM18/USD5) came and looked absolutely gorgeous with two halves of a fresh water prawn resting on top of the noodles. The soup was again rich and aromatic.

Buddy's Pan Fried Medallion Cod Fish with Butterflied Prawn (RM45/USD12.70) was delightful to look at too. Stacked on top a little heap of sliced baby potatoes. Buddy said the cod was fresh and that it was nice but could be better. Maybe because there was no wine to go with the cod??? :o)

Here's how Bora Asmara and Subak stack up against each other, I've pick the winner in each category which would help me crown the overall winner. However, when I found out that she had wanted to take us to the Balinese themed Bora Asmara, I wasn't that excited - Bora Asmara had been getting quite a number of negative reviews. That was the reason why some of us floggers never paid the place a visit. However, I told myself that I shall not bother much about the food but rather enjoy the gathering with a bunch of people whose company I enjoy and will still enjoy where ever we may be.

After travelling there convoy style (to ensure we don't get lost), we arrived at Bora Asmara and we were greeted as soon as we walked through the doors. Having made reservations earlier for the 14 of us, we were ushered into an indoor section (which seemed more private than another indoor building nearby) and luckily for us, we had the whole place to ourselves! Of course there is a large outdoor area (gazebo) for people to dine and chill under the stars. We were rather impressed at the lovely setting (all the while still bracing myself for the food experience that was about to come).

Taking all 14 of our orders (ordering ala carte) would have been a nightmare for some but this particular middle age service crew was an absolute pro. He was humorous and believe it or not, he could remember what we ordered without jotting anything down. We didn't believe it till he recited back our orders including 14 of our drinks (down to the usual ... less chili, more vegetables, less oil, less sugar, less ice "mah-fan" aka troublesome requests, hahaha...) with a big smile! Not much comment from me on the food as I only tasted some of the other dishes. So now...on with the food pics of what some of us ate.

We ordered Top Hats (RM15.90 for 1/2 dozen) for starters. These were nice but at more than RM2.50 a pop - it's not nice enough for me to order it again.

My Nasi Lemak Nyonya (RM19.90), served with a piece of pandan chicken, prawn sambal, beef rendang and nyonya acar. Despite having all these on the plate, not one thing was outstanding, average tasting fare.

The Ayam Bakar Warung Pudjok Candidasa (RM19.90) was a grilled whole chicken leg with spicy bumbu. My friend said that it was quite good. I tasted a bit and the chicken was moist and tender while having crisp skin. I would say I agree with my friend.

Thai Sea Bass (RM33.90) - served on grilled pumpkin with spicy Thai sauce.

I tried some of their Phat Thai- RM18.90 (that's how they spell it on the menu) and I found it rather tasty. Not too sickly sweet like some Pad Thais I've eaten, this was just right. Mixed it up with the chili flakes for an extra kick! Something I wont' mind ordering again should I be back
here.

My friend found this Caribbean Chicken (RM29.90) that was served with chunky mango salsa okay and would have preferred more spice and less sweet.

Mak Bonda Special (RM19.90) didn't really have anything special about it. It's tenggiri fish fried rice served with fresh kampung ulam according to "mom's recipe". Sorry "mom", don't mean any disrespect but "WHERE'S THE FISH?"...

Bali Dancing Fish was a sight to behold ... but despite its looks, it was not as crispy crunch as my friend thought it would be. A disappointment for her....

Overall experience : Not as bad as what I have read earlier in other blog reviews in terms of food and service. Some food are rather good while some are mediocre (less hits more misses though) but none that taste bad. So, ordering is more like a shot at the roulette table :o). There's also a five piece band which went around the restaurant, entertaining the patrons - they thoroughly did entertain us. It was a fun night for us all especially for JC who celebrated her birthday here (she's usually traveling out of the country) with a bunch of fun loving, dance crazy and food loving people! Thanks Teacher for a great night out! I don't mind coming back here to chill if one is looking for a nice ambiance amidst a busy part of town. When I was told that Masak-Masak had blogged on a Korean eatery which has been garnering good reviews, I knew I had to pay them a visit at The Gardens, Mid Valley City.

After some shopping one day, it was time to fill our stomachs and I remembered this time (at times I do forget!) to drop by Ko Hyang since Glorious Jade and I were already in the vicinity. It was a rather late lunch and we wanted a quick bite, which was good I suppose as that meant Ko Hyang wasn't as busy as it would be during the usual lunch hour. The menu wasn't that extensive which was understandable as Ko Hyang has a very simple set up. I saw a Korean lady there and I suppose she was the owner and she had quite a substantial number of staff helping her out in this small eatery. We promptly put in our orders and as usual the banchan was served to us first as we waited for our food to arrive.

There were just 3 varieties served and both of us enjoyed the Kimchi tremendously. Being the most common banchan served in every Korean restaurant I've been to, I would say that Ko Hyang's kimchi is the best I've tasted so far! We have eaten some that tend to be a tad sourish but Ko Hyang's Kim Chi was absolutely delish and the taste was spot on. Spicy and pungent enough without being too overwhelming, I guessed what made it that good was that the pickled cabbage served was smaller than usual. So, it was very flavourful.

Next served was Bulgogi with rice (RM16.90). The sesame seed, onions, carrot and spring onions added more sweetness to this dish. Though the beef was quite well marinated, it would have been better if it had more gravy, a bit on the dry side for me.

Oh, the Bulgogi came with a bowl of rice and we enjoyed this shiny sticky rice, plus points!

Of course, I ordered my favourite Jap Chae (RM14.90) Stirred fried with sesame oil, the noodles were very tasty. One can choose either chicken or beef with the noodles and we choose chicken as we already had the Bulgogi. I absolutely love this dangmyeon/cellophane noodles with the vegetables and Ko Hyang's does a great job with it. Not oily and fragrant, this was simply yummylicious!

We also ordered the Kimchi Pancake (RM9.50) and we enjoyed it too with the chili oil dip. Though it came a bit burnt on the side, it was the burnt parts that we enjoyed most as that meant it was crispier than the middle part which was softer. And since we loved the Kimchi, of course this Kimchi Pancake tasted great to us too.

An overall pleasant dining experience with homecooked "country" Korean food indeed. I'll definitely be back again :o)

Ko Hyang
Korean Country Delights
LG-KG05, The Gardens
(Lower Ground Floor, opposite JustLife)
Mid Valley City
59200 Kuala Lumpur

If you starve for three days, there is no thought that does not invade your imagination
- Korean Proverb

Weekend Puppy Power X 7

I finally got a shot of all 7 puppies!!! Dear ol' bro always expect me to suggest where to eat ... "You're the food blogger, you tell us where to eat...". So, I usually have to wreck my brain to come up with a name and after that...cross my fingers and cross my toes that the food is not gonna disappoint (or worse, that the restaurant won't be closed!). Seriously, sometimes I get so tired of eating out that I don't even know where to go!

As if it's not enough being subjected to that by my family, my friends throw that same line at me too...Yup! ..."You're the food blogger, you tell us where to eat..." What's worse...sometimes giving them a name isn't enough, I'll get a call when they are seated in the restaurant and they are calling me why? Because they want me to recommend what dishes to order! *FAINTS* Hahaha....Yes, the life of a food blogger can be rather taxing on the mind. So, it was on another one of those occasion when bro went ... "You're the food blogger, yada yada yada...." hahaha, and we ended up here.

Restaurant Sai Gong

We arrived rather late and the place was already packed to the brim, something I had expected after having read some blog posts about the place. We finally got a table after waiting for about 10 minutes and I told the family to expect to wait a while for the food to be served too. The staff who took our order had earlier gave us some recommendations and each of us put in an order of our choice.

Sis-in-law, the ever young, slim and healthy one put in a large order of Stir Fried Spinach (I think???) which we rather enjoyed...It was exceptionally "green" looking, fragrant and cooked just right. I enjoyed slurping up the vege gravy. Well, if it wasn't spinach, I enjoyed "whatever it was"...hahaha....

Bro's pick was the Sam Pui Tin Kai (Three Cups Farm Frogs). This came in a claypot and was extremely aromatic. This is a Taiwanese preparation style - three cups being made up of 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of rice wine and 1 cup of soy sauce; all these with onions and and added hint of ginger. I tried a bit of this and found the meat very tender and the sauce very flavourful indeed but still am not really a fan of frogs.

Nephew's pick of Salted Chicken came looking rather different from Aun Kheng Lim's version from Ipoh. I found this chicken dish mediocre and probably not something that we would order again as our taste buds all agreed that this fell short of our expectation.

I was very satisfied with my pick of Sesame Seed Spare Ribs....This is honey sweet (don't order this if you prefer savoury ones) and the meat was tender and juicy. Peppered with generous amount of sesame seeds, it gave an added fragrant aroma to it. We enjoyed it tremendously though Teckiee had a different experience with hers.... Eating this ribs was akin to lapping up ice-cream on a hot summer's day to me! The marginal utility on this was sky high on the first bite! Hahaha... Yumz...great stuff!

Mom didn't really know what to order and bro ended up ordering steamed fish for her....Don't ask me what fish this is. I repeat...I'm not a fan of fish and have no idea what sort of fish this is. I personally think it's scary to see a fish on a dish, with its mouth agape and eyes wide open (hahaha...seeing that most fish don't have eye lids, I think sharks do!) staring back at ya! I should be having fish nightmares! LOL!

Well, overall dinner was good I would say and I've been back here a couple more times since then whenever I think about the sesame seed spare ribs... :o) Mmmm...I'm thinking about it right now!

Restoran Sai Gong
No. 63 Jalan 1/62D
Medan Putra Business Centre
Bandar Manjalara
52200 Kepong
Kuala Lumpur

Opens from 11am - 3 pm, 5.30 pm - 10.30pm
Tel : 016-6000 655

Babe In The City KL had a good meal HERE too but in the Kepong Baru outlet.

Check out Pete's post on Sai Gong (Location Map included for Manjalara)

Lisa : I'm going to become a vegetarian
Homer : Does that mean you're not going to eat any pork?
Lisa : Yes
Homer : Bacon?
Lisa : Yes Dad
Homer : Ham?
Lisa : Dad, all those meat come from the same animal
Homer : Right Lisa, some wonderful, magical animal!

Attending 1st Food Blogger Wedding, KL Hilton

Over this Saturday weekend, a group of us food bloggers a.k.a. floggers attended our very first food blogger wedding held in KL Hilton. Lighting was rather dim...with romance in the air for the lovely couple and romance with the food for us floggers (but that meant some food shots turning out blur for me, hahaha...).

Cute magnets of various colours were placed on the table for the guests

Check out the menu!

I found this to be the tastiest dish of that night - Fresh (raw?) scallops with light cream dressing, topped with pistachios and mango bits. Absolutely delicious!

Since us floggers needed to take photos of the food, we told the service staff that we would serve ourselves but this was the only dish which we let the staff tend to - slicing up and serving up the seabass (after we were done taking pics of the whole fish pre-sliced, of course!)

Cozy ambiance - 5 tables, small crowd, big on moments!

We had lotsa drinks on our table!

As the couple went round the tables for the customary toast, we took a Polaroid shot for the scrapbook they were putting together on-the-spot.

The scrapbook was then passed around and each of the floggers (so did all the other guests) took turns to sign it, with some of us penning down wise words and some not so wise words! However, this outlet in Tropicana City Mall has a whole different look from the other two (the 1Utama outlet has already undergone some interior changes and I think so will the other outlet). I have to say that this is my favourite outlet and I'm not saying that just because it's only 5 minutes away from where I stay :o). I like the look of this place and food has also improved on this third "outing" of theirs.

Great new look! I like the old fashion gate at the side ...

On the inside, a fusion of old meets new style cafe - lots of memorabilia on display. Note the display rack that's on the ceiling. Yes, that's a real bicycle on top!- apart from the one displayed at the front of the place. Uhhh...I wonder if anyone really uses that metal cup to gargle since it's at the side of the sink....Hahaha....

Items for sale ... rekindling our childhood days!

I've been to Otak-Otak Place on many occasions and even met up with Jason and Motormouth (the two Ipoh guys, though Jason is now living in the next building to Tropicana City Mall) here. Click HERE to read Motormouth's post on his visit to Otak-Otak Place. We only had some snacks that night but here are some pics of other food that I've tried at this outlet .

Apart from the usual coffee and tea (which is quite good and comes served with a Hup Seng biscuit!), my favourite drink would be this Blackcurrant Longan (RM3.50). They also have ice blended drinks and the more unique ones would be the Tongkat Ali Ginseng Blended, Mocha Ginseng Blended and Haw Blended (blended drinks at RM5.90).

Look at that cute paper table mat that has this section that pops up ... one of the many cute things one can find in Otak-Otak Place. Even the menu is in the form of an exercise book (note the menu in the background)!

Ohhhh....of course what would I usually order from Otak-Otak Place? Otak-Otak, of course! This one here is my absolute favourite. At RM0.60/stick - (normally at RM1.10/stick, this is a promo that they are running here till end June) these grilled Otak-Otak Sticks are fantastic. It's comes hot off the grill and they are spicy! I love these Otak-Otak Sticks to bits!

One of the less spicy Otak-Otak version (Otak-Otak Place lives up to its name - the last time I did a count, there are actually 16 different varieties!), the Steamed Otak-Otak is yummy too. Take your pick from either Fish (RM3), Squid or Prawn (RM3.90).

I love most of the Otak-Otak variety here as I find that the mix of the fish paste together with the rest of spices (like shallots, chilli, turmeric amongst others) blend very well together with none overpowering the other.

Another fave Otak-Otak order of mine would be the Nasi Lemak Otak-Otak (RM7.90)! ...

It's served in a cute two-tiered tiffin carrier (which you can buy for RM15). Top tier contains a pan-fried Otak-Otak together with some sambal and peanuts and the bottom tier contains the nasi lemak together with some slices of cucumber and half of a hard boiled egg. I like the rice here, not too overly "lemak" but just nice. However, I find the sambal average.

And just when you think, what other Otak-Otak dish can there be... try this!

Otak-Otak Burger (RM8.90) - This was a first time order for me. A little bit weird at first but I started to enjoy it more when it came to my third bite. I found this good value for money as the side dish of potato wedges itself were of almost impeccable quality (one can order Potato Wedges on its own - RM4.50)

Then there is the Hainanese Chicken Rice (RM8.90). See how I was served my favourite part of the chicken? Hehehe...chicken breast meat!

The meat was nice and firm where as the rice was alright, not as authentic as I would like it to be. However, this dish comes with three sauces; ginger, chilli and black, plus points for making it complete!

A crowd favourite - Nasi Briyani Dam (RM12.90). I forgot to take a pic of the piece of chicken that was "unearthed" later as it came hidden beneath the rice. The rice was a bit dry but eating it with some dhal curry soon rectified it. The rice was flavourable and but the star of this dish is the "hidden" chicken. The chicken is so well marinated that it's absolutely bursting with flavours. I also like the cute way that it's served on a wooden chopping block!

The Mee Bandung Muar (RM7.90) is also favourite of many. Its gravy like soup has the right consistency. Looks like the kitchen is getting things done well and has improved :o)

Little Green Soldiers - I thought they had ceased to exist till I saw them here in Otak-Otak Place. I like coming to Otak-Otak Place as I'm transported back to my childhood days; the novelty of the food being served in tiffin carriers/claypots, the memorabilia that adorn the walls/cabinets ... in almost every nook and cranny. The food and the place here spell FUN!

Otak-Otak Place
Lot L1-58, 1st Floor (click HERE for location)
Tropicana City Mall
3, Jalan SS20/27
47400 Petaling Jaya

Tel :03-7728 0403

If it's not fun, you're not doing it right
-Bob Basso

Have A Break...

Weekend Puppy Power!

Not too long ago...I took pics of some new born puppies and I went back again when they were about 2 weeks old. Hahaha....

Tiger said as she pouts : I didn't get to eat beef balls and I'm not satisfied!!!

The sun was out in full force that day and we decided to skip coffee and look for a place to have desserts instead. After rounding the area, we decided to venture into this place after finding out that quite a number of eateries weren't open on Sundays here and this one was!

Bread Basket Bakery

Went we entered the place, we were informed that the kitchen was closed and only drinks and desserts were available which was fine with us. After scrutinizing the menu, we ordered some classic desserts ...

Banana Split (RM5) - This was once my favourite order when I was a kid whenever I went to KFC (known as Kentucky Fried Chicken back then). Yes, it must be served in the glass bowl for it to be considered an authentic Banana Split. Hahaha....

I went for the Ice Kacang (RM4.50) instead - a rather big bowl with generous ingredients. It was not overly sweet but sweet enough and had a hint of syrup from the canned fruits which made it even nicer. Of course, it had the usual grass jelly, corn and red beans too.

Overall, we enjoyed the desserts - can't really go wrong with these classics. This Chinese bakery cafe had some interesting looking food but I guess that will have to wait till we swing by this way again. They also operate "Friends" on the 1st Floor which serves Chinese cuisine. Mmmm....plenty of eateries to explore in Kota Kemuning. We'll be back!

Bread Basket Bakery
No. 2 Jalan Anggerik Vanilla Y31/Y
Kota Kemuning
40460 Shah Alam

Tel : 03-5121 3771

Check out Lingzie's review HERE (with location map too)

Ice cream is happiness condensed. ~ Jessi Lane Adams

Pun Chun Noodle House @ Kota Kemuning

(NON-HALAL)

The Zoo Gang was looking forward to a day trip to Seremban for our usual Quinn's beef noodles but due to some last minute changes, we ended up in Kota Kemuning instead. Needless to say, Tiger was pouting a fair bit along the way as she was looking forward to the beef balls but anyway....

We drove to Kota Kemuning, wanting to visit somewhere else actually but it was not opened and we ended up in Pun Chun Noodle House. Read about them opening a branch here a while back but never got the chance to try it out till now. I sure have lots of sweet memories of Pun Chun back in Bidor as that was one of the many food pit stops that the Apple Crumble Team aka Fantastic Four (comprising of Jackson, Precious Pea, Teckiee and me) made when we took part in The Star's Drive For Food back in 2007!

Well, they had the same sort of display here, selling the usual famous "chicken" biscuits sans the little snack corner that has delicious Woo Kok (Yam/Taro Puff) in Bidor.

Tiger's order of Duck Drumstick Dry Noodles (RM6.80) came first. I had to take the shots quickly as I was afraid Tiger would take a swipe at me with her "paws" if I took my time composing the shot. Hence I'm unsated with this pic of Tiger's food! Hahah :op

I remembered the soup in Bidor was darker and oilier. I tried a spoonful of soup and found the taste too strong and bitter for my liking and hoped I would like my order...

And luckily I did...my soup version of the same tasted better. I guess the noodles altered the soup's original taste, to one which I preferred. The noodles were nice and springy and I enjoyed it though I would say that I found this noodles okay overall as it fell short of my expectation, being a specialty of Pun Chun. The duck drumstick however was tender and had more of a duck breast meat texture than that of the usual smooth drumstick though. But of course, since I preferred duck breast meat, it's not a complain but I guess drumstick meat lovers would probably beg to differ. Well, either that or the gang was sorely missing the 'beef noodles'! 'Nothing Compares....nothing compared to youuuuuu......", Heehehe...

Cheshire Cat's order of Char Siew Wantan Noodles (RM5) came with char siew that looked and tasted like the usual run-of-the-mill roast meat at most wantan noodles stalls unless you're eating HERE or HERE!

We did order an extra bowl of only wantan (RM5.30) on the side. I found the wantan deliciously meat filled that was also springy. No joke, it was so springy that one had bounced off (when I placed it on my soup spoon with my chopsticks) onto the table! Best eaten with green pickled chillies.

Cow's order of Mushroom Chicken Feet Noodles (RM4.30) came with three rather huge chicken feet. They seem juicy enough as I watched Cow grazed on them last - Cow saved the best for last, you see...

After we cleared our bowls here, "We Don't Get No Satisfaction" were still somehow in need of something extra and decided to drive around the area.

To Be Continued...

Pun Chun Noodle House
10 Jalan Anggerik vanilla AC 31/AC
Kota Kemuning
40460 Shah Alam

(Tel :012-2535386)

They have a blog...check it out HERE and here's the location map to the outlet in Kota Kemuning.

Pun Chun Chicken Biscuits & Restaurant
38-40 Jalan Besar
35500 Bidor
Perak

Tel : 05-434 1554/1562

Khuntai Restaurant - Thai Food, Petaling Jaya

Where were we? Ahhh.... dinner on Sunday night with Mom. Bro was in a spicy mood and suggested that we do Thai for dinner and suggested somewhere nearby; Khuntai. I've heard several people telling me that Khuntai dishes out rather good Thai food and wondered if it's as good as they say.

Arriving there during peak dinner time without reservations (it was packed, either due to the usual dinner crowd or 'cos it's Mom's Day), we waited for a bearable 10 minutes or so before we got a table. I had hoped to get a table with adequate lighting but was shown to a table outdoors. "Bummer!", I told myself as lighting was just minimum, hardly conducive for photos but tried my best.

As I was busy chatting with my nephew, Spare Change about photography, lighting etc. etc. (shooting the chili bottles to test the lighting), my bro did the ordering. So, I didn't know what to expect till the dishes were delivered to the table. We ordered a big jug of Kedondong (Ambarella) fruit juice which I didn't take a photo of. At RM20, it really quenched our thirst and was enough for the 6 of us.

The Spicy Mango Kerabu (RM15/USD4.30) - I found the mango too raw for me but loved eating the whole ensemble together with the crispy anchovies, cashew nuts and onions. Not as spicy as I thought it would be.

SIL being a vege lover, ordered the Fish Maw Kerabu (RM13/USD3.70). As if having read my thoughts on the earlier dish, this one came loaded with chili padi (bird's eye chili), very evident from the photo right? Approach with caution. The Fish Maw was slightly crispy but had an overall chewy texture. This was like a "Thai" mesclun salad with all sorts of greens. Taste wise, I prefer the Spicy Mango Kerabu over this.

Seafood Tom Yam (RM33/USD9.40) - Came with enough seafood for all of us. I enjoyed the hot sourish soup....recalling this has started me drooling. Yum yum! Hahaha....

Fried Prawn Cakes (RM15.60/USD4.40 for 6 pieces) was a nice change from the fiery hot and sour stuff. Best eaten with sweet Thai chili sauce (they also have the hot sambal chili for those who are into hot stuff! Hehehe...

Deep Fried Sotong (Calamari) - No comment! This came to our table by mistake and since I didn't know what brother ordered or had not ordered, I proceeded to take photos of it before he realised he had not ordered this and had this sent back. Hahaha.....

Fish in Thai Style (RM33/USD9.40). Well, those of you who know me would know I'm not a fan of fish. I did try the soup and found it quite nice - very light and slightly sour. One can asked them to top up the soup should one want more, which is what we did.

This dish came last and rather late. Assam Prawns (RM36/USD10). The prawns are lightly battered and fried. Assam gravy is then poured over it. This was slightly sour and tasty but do note that one should eat this ASAP as the gravy coagulates when it gets cold!

We remarked that dear brother had ordered mostly all sourish dishes and that we would probably be hungry again later....Hahaha! This place that is not very Thai looking has some hits and misses but it could also be due to the fact that we had not picked more hits. I don't mind going back again to try the other dishes. They have another restaurant in Butterworth (checked out their website, this Butterworth outlet looks more Thai!)

Khuntai Restaurant
6 Jalan 5/44
Petaling Garden
Off Jalan Gasing
46000 Petaling Jaya

Tel : 03-7781 7523
Daily from 11 am - 3 pm, 5 pm - 11 pm

104 Permatang Tengah
13400 Butterworth

Tel : 04-332 7523
Daily from 11 am to 12 midnight

Click HERE for Khuntai's website with location map for both outlets

Age pays the penalty for the sins of youth
ความประพฤติผิดใน วัย หนุ่มจะปรากฏโทษให้เห็นเมื่อเข้าสู่วัยชรา
kwaam bpra-prit pit nai wai noom ja bpraa-got tote hai hen meua kao soo wai-cha-raa
A Thai Proverb I'm trying to understand

Mom's Day Out

Just a quick update on today's lunch. Took Mom out for lunch and she wanted to go to 1Utama for a bit of shopping. As we wandered about, we ended up at Italiannies ... Pleasantly surprised that they were giving Moms a discount off selected main meals according to their age! Here are the pics ... (FYI, we celebrated again at dinner time!). Mrs Pitt, wished you were here...

Mom : "Is that all? Selera Jaya Petaling Jaya

(NON-HALAL)

I have taken these photos for quite some time now but never got around to posting them yet as I could not get the actual name of the place. This Selera Jaya is not the Medan Selera at Jalan Othman but is opposite Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Darker and with lesser stalls, the place here still has a few stalls with certain specialties that draw their own customers.

Like the porridge stall I went to. With the recent outbreak of swine flu, I had wondered if business at this stall had decreased since I last went there but when I dropped by the other day, they were still doing brisk business!

This stall owner churns out bowls and bowls of porridge and other goodies. It's so swine filled that even I found it a little bit too much for me. Why? I only eat good roast pork and char siew, yes, that's how I like 'em swine meat! What my friends ordered, I could only stare in disbelief - which is heavenly to quite a number of people though, judging by the lot who ordered this....

Loaded Pork Soup! The whole works from all parts of the swine (including the blood!). I nearly fainted! Hahaha....

Then came the porridge...Pig's blood again!

Chicken me ordered the shredded chicken porridge instead. Came with Yu Tiao (Yau Char Gwai) and I added a part extra that I do eat - crispy fried intestines. The porridge was very smooth and with the added ingredients, was delightful to eat and I could tell why this stall attracts the crowd, "porky or non-porky" ones. Hahaha...

But of course, one can order the steamed chicken here too, for those who are even more chicken than I am in having an encounter with the whole swine. Prices at this stall are pretty reasonable (sorry, I can't seem to recall!).

So, for those who can't be swayed or discouraged by the precautions and warnings from the media and well intentioned friends, go ahead...eat this!

Selera Jaya (No name stall, Stall No. 21)
Jalan Othman ??? (opp. Good Shepherd Lutheran Church)
Petaling Jaya

Pig in other languages

Dutch varken
Italian porco
Finnish sika
Japanese buta
Latvian cuka
Turkish domuz
Morse Code .--. .. --.

New Lives!

As Pea turned 6 on April 20, Jojo gave birth to 7 puppies on the same day - 5 males, 2 female.
