In this week's show, we do things differently. I'm joined by Lara Assoud Khoury, a typographer by trade, and we discuss the recently unveiled 'Arabic Initiative'. We break it down, article by article, and bring up Institut du Monde Arabe, the Museum of Islamic Art, calligraphy vs typography, Islamic architecture, branding and more in the process. We wrap it up with a discussion on a book Lara illustrated, Tabati, and her thoughts on how we perceive Arabic as a language.

In this week's show, we talk about false reporting, the Gulf Film Festival, uninformed opinions meet "slacktivism", skydiving, apps to rule us all, and a little bit about Kodak. Through Mohammed's game development experience, we talk about cultural identity beyond certain icons that must be shooed-into everything. From that point, we jump off to inconsistent censorship and more until we're reeled back in to the pervious thing about culture. Then, Abdulla expands on Mohammed's idea a bit more by bringing up a Japanese playing card game called 'karuta' and how we can make use of the idea to re-introduce kids to classical Arabian poetry. This spins off into a very deep discussion on the state of Arabic books, webdesign, and the sadly underused and beautiful typography. Finally, we critique TEDxDubai at the end.

Here's our latest #Geekfest special!

Since this is the last one, at the old shelter, I decided to theme the podcast around "Memories of the Shelter & Past Geekfests".

Here's a rundown of what happened on the podcast!

While I was distracted with greeting MIA YTSer Van, who reappeared once more with her friend Jens, pronounced with a 'y', in a 'Buli', fresh from a recent adventure around the globe, Devina steals the mic and starts yelling into it with Partha cracking jokes in the background until Yasmin shows up in her Red Panda costume and slashes them into little stars! That's all while I'm having some tea & crumpets with Hisham and Hind off-mic.
Winding down from her murderous spree, T.D. comes to show us her browncoat and librarian skills with Ammouni and Hacky assisting.
Later, Nick propels himself, using his glitter fart, to ruin their formation and declare that he is out of his mind. Next to him, Fida and Doaa were thinking about Arabia and scribbling on napkins. 
Zombies ran amok as friendships were strengthened when mohammed got caught wacking Jimmy.
A complete foodie waltzed in to declare his disdain for the food we were being served, sparking rage from the Great Pilar!
She was calmed by the wise Ritesh, who shoved her into a zone of caring, and prompted Mali and I to share a tender moment till Seerwan came and ruined everything.

That's my rendition of what happened, actual events may differ.

With DIFF fever, back then, in the air we discuss all forms of movies! We pitch advertising in the Middle East, yet if failed to get off the ground.
Epic faces ensue, causing an IMDB binge. That evolves into a discussion about Christian Bale and Indian Movies. Talk about fancy car garages spins us toward the story of "The Enzo Effect"; an amazing epic on car history. Guarav tells us more about his obsession with cars, leading him to start a classic car "company"/charity called the Rolling Art Emporium. Mobile Payments lead into some talk about NFC, that dissolves into the big topic on our Dependence on the Internet. Naturally, it leads into a discussion about a certain electronic glory hole, and QR codes.

Finally, since this podcast was recorded late last year, everyone talk about their 2010.

Here's our first installment of the @TwitBookClub epicdoses!

In case you don't know, @TwitBookClub, Twitter Book Club, is a Dubai-based Book Club that meets once a month on the 3rd Saturday of that month. In the UAE, our weekends are Friday/Saturday ever since we shifted from Thursady/Friday in September 2006.

TwitBookClub isn't your regular BookClub, we pick 4 books by voting each month; 3 books are picked in the meeting, while the 4th is decided by putting the rest in an online poll. You can also show up to meetings without reading books at all and join the discussion.

In this meeting, we talk about 4 books:

Istanbul by Orhan Pamuk, Lyrics Alley by Leila Aboulela, Official Book Club Selection by Kathy Griffin, Between the Bridge and the River by Craig Ferguson, and The Last Block In Harlem by Christopher Herz.

Also, discussions about how books bridge cultures, Turkish Dramas, as usual the Evil Eye makes an appearance, TV Shows, throwing books live on air, bending book spines, anime, iPhone games, & Cricket!

Then, we interview author Christopher Herz about his book Last Block in Harlem live! We had quite the conversation! :D

Confrences and Events happen all year, do you just go to talks for the heck of it or to actually change yourself? We critique the wierd architecture and design choices of some houses and areas in Dubai. Each week, there's always a new crazy fashion trends and passing fad; We dissect 'em and poke fun at them. Abdulla talks about the besmirched jewel that Sharjah is. Charities in the U.A.E. and finally footing bills with friends.

First up, Hoor talks about the insane state of weddings ceremonies here. Next, I talk about my purchase of a couple of subscriptions on Zinio. Mohammed brings up the story of a disabled, differently-abled, friend of theirs that brought some shocking truths to light. The conversations flips over 180 degrees after Ahmed talks pokes fun at his professors at uni, then Azza joins us and brings us back with a discussion on her trip to Bangladesh and her aspirations to set up an NGO. We talk about Autism, the necessity to travel during the summer months, and the benefits of Facebook and Twitter while abroad. We close with Ahmed breaking a mug and other things.

It's June 30, Mashable Social Media Day! I'm at the Meetup in The Shelter, AlQouz, Dubai.

The plan is to cast a line and reel people in, ask them a few questions about how they use Social Networks, The Definition of Social Media, How to classify something as Social Media, aaaand *pulls out a dead, beaten horse* Facebook Privacy issues.
