In this week's show, we talk about false reporting, the Gulf Film Festival, uninformed opinions meet "slacktivism", skydiving, apps to rule us all, and a little bit about Kodak. Through Mohammed's game development experience, we talk about cultural identity beyond certain icons that must be shooed-into everything. From that point, we jump off to inconsistent censorship and more until we're reeled back in to the pervious thing about culture. Then, Abdulla expands on Mohammed's idea a bit more by bringing up a Japanese playing card game called 'karuta' and how we can make use of the idea to re-introduce kids to classical Arabian poetry. This spins off into a very deep discussion on the state of Arabic books, webdesign, and the sadly underused and beautiful typography. Finally, we critique TEDxDubai at the end.

Moving on, we discuss the volunteer group called "The Seeds of Change" and their Water Movement Campaign. Next, we discuss education and youth, and then we dabble a bit in Emiratization. Finally, Maryam, arriving fashionably late, talks about the elaboration on the labor law about teens working.

Epicdose 27 - The #Geekfest's "Farewell @ShelterDXB" Edition

SALUTATIONS!

Here's our latest #Geekfest special!

Since this is the last one, at the old shelter, I decided to theme the podcast around "Memories of the Shelter & Past Geekfests".

Here's a rundown of what happened on the podcast!

While I was distracted with greeting MIA YTSer Van, who reappeared once more with her friend Jens, pronounced with a 'y', in a 'Buli', fresh from a recent adventure around the globe, Devina steals the mic and starts yelling into it with Partha cracking jokes in the background until Yasmin shows up in her Red Panda costume and slashes them into little stars! That's all while I'm having some tea & crumpets with Hisham and Hind off-mic.
Winding down from her murderous spree, T.D. comes to show us her browncoat and librarian skills with Ammouni and Hacky assisting.
Later, Nick propels himself, using his glitter fart, to ruin their formation and declare that he is out of his mind. Next to him, Fida and Doaa were thinking about Arabia and scribbling on napkins.
Zombies ran amok as friendships were strengthened when mohammed got caught wacking Jimmy.
A complete foodie waltzed in to declare his disdain for the food we were being served, sparking rage from the Great Pilar!
She was calmed by the wise Ritesh, who shoved her into a zone of caring, and prompted Mali and I to share a tender moment till Seerwan came and ruined everything.

That's my rendition of what happened, actual events may differ.

Enjoy!

In this belated epicdose, Abdulla is joined by Ahmed, Fatma & Gaurav.

With DIFF fever, back then, in the air we discuss all forms of movies! We pitch advertising in the Middle East, yet if failed to get off the ground.
Epic faces ensue, causing an IMDB binge. That evolves into a discussion about Christian Bale and Indian Movies. Talk about fancy car garages spins us toward the story of "The Enzo Effect"; an amazing epic on car history. Guarav tells us more about his obsession with cars, leading him to start a classic car "company"/charity called the Rolling Art Emporium. Mobile Payments lead into some talk about NFC, that dissolves into the big topic on our Dependence on the Internet. Naturally, it leads into a discussion about a certain electronic glory hole, and QR codes.

Finally, since this podcast was recorded late last year, everyone talk about their 2010.

As always, feedback and suggestion are always welcome. Feel free to tweet Abdulla or email us.

KONICHIWA MINNA-SAN!

Here's our first installment of the @TwitBookClub epicdoses!

In case you don't know, @TwitBookClub, Twitter Book Club, is a Dubai-based Book Club that meets once a month on the 3rd Saturday of that month. In the UAE, our weekends are Friday/Saturday ever since we shifted from Thursady/Friday in September 2006.

TwitBookClub isn't your regular BookClub, we pick 4 books by voting each month; 3 books are picked in the meeting, while the 4th is decided by putting the rest in an online poll. You can also show up to meetings without reading books at all and join the discussion.

In this meeting, we talk about 4 books:

Istanbul by Orhan Pamuk, Lyrics Alley by Leila Aboulela, Official Book Club Selection by Kathy Griffin, Between the Bridge and the River by Craig Ferguson, and The Last Block In Harlem by Christopher Herz.

Also, discussions about how books bridge cultures, Turkish Dramas, as usual the Evil Eye makes an appearance, TV Shows, throwing books live on air, bending book spines, anime, iPhone games, & Cricket!

Then, we interview author Christopher Herz about his book Last Block in Harlem live! We had quite the conversation! :D

Finally, I'd like to thank everyone who participated in the meeting via their tweets!

Enjoy!

After discussing Emirati farms, Abdulla wonders why people add Peacocks to their menagerie?

Fikree later brings up a subject that leads us into a discussion about Phobias.

Ahmed arrives fashionably late and talks about his desert excursions. Abdulla educates the group on Geocaching and Foursquare.

Yes, Ramadan ended two weeks ago. Fortunately, I think we made it clear that this podcast defies all types of logic including time. :p

We talk about a lot of things in this epicdose, while it didn't follow the plan, it still was a great and fun conversation!

This time, we have Azza AlNoami joining Hoor, Ahmed, and myself! Hisham and Hind later show up to crash our party, as one might expect from Hisham. xD

Topics include: The Evil Eye, dark arts, jinn, restaurant rating, and more!

Do contact us on Twitter or our email for some feedback, suggestions, what you thought about the stuff we talked about, or anything you want us to read on the podcast.

You There, Speak! returns with a short special epicdose, #humor, with no structure and off-topicness reins supreme!

Nagham discusses venturing into the realm of smartphones and going over features we've been enjoying since 2007! She dumped her dumbphone for a smart Xperia Min Pro.

Despite my willingness to switch over, I still have a few problems with Android devices. Hisham tries tempting me by discussing the conveniences of Android OS.

We then move on to the prospect of Twitter disappearing overnight and Google turning evil.

Hind raises concern about people having their lives tied to their mobile phone.

Which, somehow, prompts a discussion about the safety and usability of cellphones that double as vibrators.

We hop back to discussing the pros and cons of each mobile OS: iOS, Android, Symbian, Maemo, and Windows Mobile 7.

Finally, Huda inquires about apps for small businesses.

Enjoy!

Cast: Abdulla, Anastasia (she's only physically there), Huda, Hisham, Hind, Mike, Nagham, and Uzma.

"The bun shall be annihilated, So will the tortilla. THERE SHALL ONLY BE PEETA!"

- Mohammed Parham AlAwadi, Kaiser of Peeta Planet

We jump kick into this epicdose with some UFC talk, and it's mysterious ability of lowering crime rates in the Phillipines. Naturally, Van slam dunks our way into Basket Ball, and Peyman's interest/obsession with LeBron James and Cleveland's economy.

Next, we canonball into Emirati Culture! The rise of the young and the restlessly ambitious Emiratis, the rapid developments, their pros and cons, and EMIRATISATION. (it pains me deeply that this isn't an acronym..)

Van makes the mistake of talking about TV Shows! I try to keep the conversation going but we can't help but poke fun at her age! Oh and I spoil LOST for Peyman, but he rebounds by telling me that I remind him of a certain TV character... ZING!

I proceed to beat Mohammed at Tetris causing him to breakdown and divulge his brief gaming obsession that landed him in rehab. We discuss Half-Life, Sport games and other stuff.

Finally, we take a jab at the Emirati movie and TV industry! We talk about classic TV Tropes in Arab series, The Gulf Film Festival, distribution and other things that make my head hurt.
