Dan Zarrella shows data that weekend posts get shared more on the Facebook than on week days. Similarly it seems that the posts on weekends get more comments. And again this trend shows in retwieeting where the best time to get retweets is Friday and the best time is 4PM.

But my experience with getting retweeted or noticed is pretty much contrary to that data. If I want my posts to be noticed I post them in the beginning of the week some time between 9 and 11AM. This is how I het the most responses and visitors.

This seems to be somewhat confirmed also by Dan Zarrella in his latest chart:

My take is that if you publish on Friday or weekend then there are less people online. Even if they tweet, comment or visit more the resulting lift is smaller than the drop from less users. My PR friends also tell me that if you want to communicate bad news do it on Friday so come Monday no one remembers.

So I post this on Friday to get incredible lift from all the retweets and weekend comments. But seriously, I suggest posting in the beginning of the week.

In many ways, 2010 was finally the year of mobile for news media, and especially so if you consider the iPad a mobile device. Many news organizations like The Washington Post and CNN included heavy social media integrations into their apps, opening the devices beyond news consumption.

In 2011, the focus on mobile will continue to grow with the launch of mobile- and iPad-only news products, but the greater focus for news media in 2011 will be on re-imagining its approach to the open social web. The focus will shift from searchable news to social and share-able news, as social media referrals close the gap on search traffic for more news organizations. In the coming year, news media’s focus will be affected by the personalization of news consumption and social media’s influence on journalism.

1. Leaks and Journalism: A New Kind of Media Entity

In 2010, we saw the rise of WikiLeaks through its many controversial leaks. With each leak, the organization learned and evolved its process in distributing sensitive classified information. In 2011, we’ll see several governments prosecute WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange for his role in disseminating classified documents and some charges will have varying successes. But even if WikiLeaks itself gets shut down, we’re going to see the rise of “leakification” in journalism, and more importantly we’ll see a number of new media entities, not just mirror sites, that will model themselves to serve whistle blowers — WikiLeaks copycats of sorts. Toward the end of this year, we already saw Openleaks, Brusselsleaks, and Tradeleaks. There will be many more, some of which will be focused on niche topics.

Just like with other media entities, there will be a new competitive market and some will distinguish themselves and rise above the rest. So how will success be measured? The scale of the leak, the organization’s ability to distribute it and its ability or inability to partner with media organizations. Perhaps some will distinguish themselves by creating better distribution platforms through their own sites by focusing on the technology and, of course, the analysis of the leaks. The entities will still rely on partnerships with established media to distribute and analyze the information, but it may very well change the relationship whistleblowers have had with media organizations until now.

2. More Media Mergers and Acquisitions

At the tail end of 2010, we saw the acquisition of TechCrunch by AOL and the Newsweek merger with The Daily Beast. In some ways, these moves have been a validation in the value of new media companies and blogs that have built an audience and a business.

But as some established news companies’ traditional sources of revenue continue to decline, while new media companies grow, 2011 may bring more media mergers and acquisitions. The question isn’t if, but who? I think that just like this year, most will be surprises.

3. Tablet-Only and Mobile-First News Companies

In 2010, as news consumption began to shift to mobile devices, we saw news organizations take mobile seriously. Aside from launching mobile apps across various mobile platforms, perhaps the most notable example is News Corp’s plan to launch The Daily, an iPad-only news organization that is set to launch early 2011. Each new edition will cost $0.99 to download, though Apple will take 30%. But that’s not the only hurdle, as the publication relies on an iPad-owning audience. There will have been 15.7 million tablets sold worldwide in 2010, and the iPad represents roughly 85% of that. However, that number is expected to more than double in 2011. Despite a business gamble, this positions news organizations like The Daily for growth, and with little competition, besides news organizations that repurpose their web content. We’ve also seen the launch of an iPad-only magazine with Virgin’s Project and of course the soon-to-launchNews.me social news iPad application from Betaworks.

But it’s not just an iPad-only approach, and some would argue that the iPad isn’t actually mobile; it’s leisurely (yes, Mark Zuckerberg). In 2011, we’ll see more news media startups take a mobile-first approach to launching their companies. This sets them up to be competitive by distributing on a completely new platform, where users are more comfortable with making purchases. We’re going to see more news companies that reverse the typical model of website first and mobile second.

4. Location-Based News Consumption

In 2010, we saw the growth of location-based services like Foursquare, Gowalla and SCVNGR. Even Facebook entered the location game by launching its Places product, and Google introduced HotPot, a recommendation engine for places and began testing it in Portland. The reality is that only 4% of online adults use such services on the go. My guess is that as the information users get on-the-go info from such services, they’ll becomes more valuable and these location-based platforms will attract more users.

Part of the missing piece is being able to easily get geo-tagged news content and information based on your GPS location. In 2011, with a continued shift toward mobile news consumption, we’re going to see news organizations implement location-based news features into their mobile apps. And of course if they do not, a startup will enter the market to create a solution to this problem or the likes of Foursquare or another company will begin to pull in geo-tagged content associated with locations as users check in.

5. Social vs. Search

In 2010, we saw social media usage continue to surge globally. Facebook alone gets 25% of all U.S. pageviewsand roughly 10% of Internet visits. Instead of focusing on search engine optimization (SEO), in 2011 we’ll see social media optimization become a priority at many news organizations, as they continue to see social close the gap on referrals to their sites.

Ken Doctor, author of Newsonomics and news industry analyst at Outsell, recently pointed out that social networks have become the fastest growing source of traffic referrals for many news sites. For many, social sites like Facebook and Twitter only account for 10% to 15% of their overall referrals, but are number one in growth. For news startups, the results are even more heavy on social. And of course, the quality of these referrals is often better than readers who come from search. They generally yield more pageviews and represent a more loyal reader than the one-off visitors who stumble across the site from Google.

6. The Death of the ‘Foreign Correspondent’

What we’ve known as the role of the foreign correspondent will largely cease to exist in 2011. As a result of business pressures and the roles the citizenry now play in using digital technology to share and distribute news abroad, the role of a foreign correspondent reporting from an overseas bureau “may no longer be central to how we learn about the world,” according to a recent study by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. The light in the gloomy assessment is that there is opportunity in other parts of the world, such as Asia and Africa, where media is expanding as a result of “economic and policy stability,” according to the report. In 2011, we’ll see more news organizations relying heavily on stringers and, in many cases, social content uploaded by the citizenry.

7. The Syndication Standard and the Ultimate Curators

Syndication models will be disrupted in 2011. As Clay Shirky recently predicted, more news outlets will get out of the business of re-running the same story on their site that appeared elsewhere. Though this is generally true, the approach to syndication will vary based on the outlet. The reality is that the content market has become highly fragmented, and if content is king, then niche is certainly queen. Niche outlets, which were once curators of original content produced by established organizations, will focus more on producing original content. While established news brands, still under pressure to produce a massive amount of content despite reduced staff numbers, will become the ultimate curators. This means they will feature just as much content, but instead through syndication partners.

You already see this taking place on sites like CNN.com or NYTimes.com, both of whose technology sections feature headlines and syndicated content from niche technology publications. In this case, it won’t only be the reader demand for original content that drives niche publications to produce more original content, but also its relationship with established organizations that strive to uphold the quality of their content and the credibility of their brand. Though original content will be rewarded, specialized, niche publications could benefit the most from the disruption.

8. Social Storytelling Becomes Reality

In 2010, we saw social content get weaved into storytelling, in some cases to tell the whole story and in other cases to contextualize news events with curation tools such as Storify. We also saw the rise of social news readers, such as Flipboard and Pulse mobile apps and others.

In 2011, we’ll not only see social curation as part of storytelling, but we’ll see social and technology companies getting involved in the content creation and curation business, helping to find the signal in the noise of information.

We’ve already heard that YouTube is in talks to buy a video productioncompany, but it wouldn’t be a surprise for the likes of Twitter orFacebook to play a more pivotal role in harnessing its data to present relevant news and content to its users. What if Facebook had a news landing page of the trending news content that users are discussing? Or if Twitter filtered its content to bring you the most relevant and curated tweets around news events?

9. News Organizations Get Smarter With Social Media

In 2010, news organizations began to take social media more seriously and we saw many news organizations hire editors to oversee social media. USA Today recently appointed a social media editor, while The New York Times dropped the title, and handed off the ropes to Aron Pilhofer’s interactive news team.

The Times‘ move to restructure its social media strategy, by going from a centralized model to a decentralized one owned by multiple editors and content producers in the newsroom, shows us that news organizations are becoming more sophisticated and strategic with their approach to integrating social into the journalism process. In 2011, we’re going to see more news organizations decentralize their social media strategy from one person to multiple editors and journalists, which will create an integrated and more streamlined approach. It won’t just be one editor updating or managing a news organization’s process, but instead news organizations will work toward a model in which each journalist serves as his or her own community manager.

10. The Rise of Interactive TV

In 2010, many people were introduced to Internet TV for the first time, as buzz about the likes of Google TV,iTV, Boxee Box and others proliferated headlines across the web. In 2011, the accessibility to Internet TV will transform television as we know it in not only the way content is presented, but it will also disrupt the dominance traditional TV has had for years in capturing ad dollars.

Americans now spend as much time using the Internet as they do watching television, and the reality is that half are doing both at the same time. The problem of being able to have a conversation with others about a show you’re watching has existed for some time, and users have mostly reacted to the problem by hosting informal conversations via Facebook threads and Twitter hashtags. Companies like Twitter are recognizing the problem and finding ways to make the television experience interactive.

It’s not only the interaction, but the way we consume content. Internet TV will also create a transition for those used to consuming video content through TVs and bring them to the web. That doesn’t mean that flat screens are going away; instead, they will only become interconnected to the web and its many content offerings.

2010 will be forever commemorated as the year Twitter matured from a cool but undecided teenager into a more confident and assertive young adult. While there’s still much room to mature and develop, Twitter’s new direction is crystallizing. With a new look, Dick Costolo as the new CEO, and an oversold newadvertising platform, Twitter is growing into something not yet fully identifiable, but formidable nonetheless.

At a minimum, Twitter is an extension of each one of us. It feeds our senses and amplifies our voice. We’re connecting to one another through shared experiences creating a hybrid social network and information exchange tied by emotion and interest. While Twitter provides the technology foundation, it is we who make Twitter so unique and consequential by simply being human and sharing what we see, feel, and think – in Twitter time. It’s both a gift and a harbinger of enlightenment. As new media philosopher, and good friend,Stowe Boyd once said, “It’s our dancing that makes the house rock, not the planks and pipes. It is us that makes Twitter alive, not the code.”

Combining our senses with digital inner monologue is something that we must learn to use wisely . While we may have freedom of Tweet, we are also witnessing that in some cases, common sense is not so common after all.

As there are multiple sides to every story, in this case, Twitter, its users, and the sentiment in between, let’s look at the opposite end of the stream for a moment. Twitter isn’t the only character in this tale to have matured. You, me, and the other 150 million Twitter denizens also changed over the last year. Social media monitoring service Sysomos released new data that highlights just how far we have come between 2009 to 2010.

Let’s start with the population of Twitter. Twitter reportedly attracted more than 100 million users in 2010. While it’s not quite the size of Facebook, which currently serves as the digital residence of 550 million, its impact on media, culture and society is profound.

Social Biography

As Twitter is an extension of your digital identity, users are finding comfort in sharing more about who they are. In 2010, 69 percent shared a bio which is more than double of those who did so in 2009.

Bios are only one part of establishing a digital identity. Whereas with instant messaging services of old, with Twitter, we are encouraged to share our name rather than an alias. The jump here is also profound. 73 percent provide a detailed name or descriptor. Last year, only 33% were as revealing. This is part of the transition from Twitter as a micromessaging or microblogging network to a more personal extension of who we are.

Where in the world are we? On Twitter, 82 percent want you to know. In 2009 however, the number of those who shared their location was only half the size.

If Google “was” the resume of the individual in 2008 and 2009, perhaps Twitter, and also Facebook, are presenting us with a more favorable opportunity to design our online persona. Now 45 percent, up from 22 percent, share a URL in their Twitter profile.

As we can see, privacy is something that’s discussed on the “other” networks…not just Twitter. Here, its natives live in public and do so willingly.

Who are These Tweeple Anyway?

We are what we say. How we describe ourselves says much more about the greater community as well. Twitter’s citizens are expressive, combining emotion and fact as their verbal self portraits. Love. Life. World. Friends. Family.

In 2010, Twitter realized its greatest velocity of growth in its short four-year history. In just one year, 44% of its total population moved in to the micro utopia in the hopes of finding and sharing something missing elsewhere online and IRL.

Who you follow says a lot about us. While many use the follow as a strategy to boost follow-backs, following the right people is also where we can fine tune the signal versus noise in our social stream. As we can see, only .05 percent of the total Twitterverse have more than 10,000 friends and only 2.05 percent connect to more than 1,000. The majority of Tweeps, 95.8 percent, maintain a network of less than 500 friends.

On Twitter, one of the most popular discussions is popularity versus influence. No, influence is not popularity and popularity is not influence. But that doesn’t mean that earning a vast network of followers isn’t a remarkable achievement in and of itself. Only .06 percent of micro socialites on Twitter boast more than 20,000 followers. Again, the trend continues across the network. Still only 2.12 percent have more than 1,000 followers. This leaves the greater population to connect everyone else with 95.9 percent maintaining less than 500 followers. For those who pay attention to influence however, influence is measured by the quality and resonance of a network, not its size.

I always find it so fascinating when the Pareto principle, otherwise known as the 80/20 rule, continues to prove itself over and over again. In Twitter’s egosystem, Of all Twitter users, 22.5 percent post 90 percent of Tweets.

.18 percent have published more than 25,000 Tweets. 2.7 percent have Tweeted more than 5,000 times. Just over 80 percent have either a bit of stage fright or they’re still finding their voice, with only sub 500 Tweets to their avatars to date. After almost four years on the service, I’ve published just over 9,000.

To this day, the friend to follower ratio continues to serve as an important benchmark. I think this is a dying stat as it only encourages us to dilute our streams with updates that don’t improve our Twitter experience. In 2011 and 2012, we will focus on ridding ourselves of the information overload that buried us in email and social networks in the past, concentrating on substance over numbers.

According to Sysomos, the follower-friend ratio is even until users reach about 1,050 followers. After, the numbers skew greater towards followers. The trend continues as followers outpace friends. For example, someone with 5,000 followers usually averages 3,700 friends. As we approach 10,000 followers though, the ratio balances again. Sysomos found that someone with 10,000 followers will most likely maintain an average of 9,600 friends.

Twitter continues to change how we discover, communicate, and share. Each time we do, we reveal a bit more about who we are and what moves us. As we embrace the new year, Twitter’s numbers will expand, but I believe the nature of the service and also how we use it will change significantly.

What do you think? Is this you?

UPDATE: To balance this post a bit, I ran traffic numbers for Twitter.com using Compete and I found something worthy of sharing. It appears that visits to Twitter.com in the U.S. is receding. Between July and October 2010, visits have gradually diminished from a high of roughly 29 million down to 26 million – close to the ~24 million closing out 2009. While many users access Twitter via third-party apps, traffic to the dotcom is a good indicator for potential growth. I should point out however, that globally, Twitter.com earned just over 100 million visitors in October, up 79 percent from 2009.

Christmas is the busiest time for the Auckland City Mission, a charity that supports families in need by providing food banks, food parcels, and medical and social services. Donations to the Mission’s Christmas Appeal ensure Christmas happens for those in need. To make donators feel as important as they really are by turning them into angels, Publicis Mojo Auckland spread the city with angels’ wings through posters, ambient stickers, print, and stencils. People are invited to take pictures of themselves in front of the wings they find. Then, by posting the picture on the Auckland City Mission’s Facebook page, a sponsor will donate $5 on their behalf to the appeal.

The Auckland City Mission site provides the following introduction to the campaign:

“In the classic holiday movie ‘It’s a wonderful life,’ George Bailey has the picture perfect life – a loving wife, four young children and his own business. However, on Christmas Eve, after a series of severe business difficulties, George’s life is unraveling and he contemplates suicide. George is saved at the last moment by the appearance of his guardian angel, Clarence, who earns his wings by showing George how worthwhile his life really is. A crisis like George’s can turn a family’s life upside down in a matter of moments. Whether it’s financial, health related or an external event, a little goodwill can have a lasting impact. Even small acts of kindness or generosity from an unknown ‘Angel’ can help people get their lives back on track and renew their hope. At the Auckland City Mission we see Angels moving through our community every day – earning their wings with acts of kindness in support of people they don’t even know. Your contribution will make a significant difference to our ability to provide support when it is needed most. We are all sincerely grateful.”

In the ever-mapping world of Facebook, the more photos that are tagged, the more relevant the data inside the Social Graph becomes. Seeing that fact, Facebook is introducing a new feature, Tag Suggestions, that will use facial recognition to give you suggestions of people you should tag in your Facebook photos.

US users, according to Mashable, will start seeing the feature in this next week. The interface? Pretty straightforward:

Though it appears to us that the tagging feature needs a bit of work (there are obviously six different people in these photos, yet the feature thinks they’re all the same person), the idea is still pretty handy. Of course, the issue will always remain of being tagged in photos that you’d rather not have seen, but that’s more between you and your friends, at this point.

You can, apparently, opt out of the Tag Suggestions, via your privacy settings. Taking it a step further, you can even opt out of having your photos suggested to your friends for any sort of tagging. Given Facebook’s history of privacy goofs, this is a nice, preemptive move.

We’ll take a deeper look at the feature once it rolls out to some of our TNW staff. For now, give us your thoughts in the comments.

The explosion in smartphone sales has challenged the imaginations of creatives to come up with marketing ideas tailored for the mobile space. Along with location-based marketing, augmented reality applications really came into focus for many brands, from luxury companies to small businesses in 2010.

Indicatively, according to figures from ABI Research, the market for augmented reality (AR) in the US alone is expected to hit $350m (£218m) in 2014, up from about $6m (£3.8m) in 2008. Marketers try to engage consumers with relevant content and interactive experiences making the most of the “wow” factor of the relatively new communication tools. The question is has AR marketing managed to grow into something truly useful for both marketers and consumers or will its hype fizzle out like cheap champagne?

Brands in 2010 have used AR technology for utility-based and innovative applications that amplify the customer experience, managing to engage an increasingly wider audience. Let’s take a look at this years most talked about case studies.

Adidas Originals Augmented Reality Game Pack: Adidas turned Originals sneakers into agame control device by adding an AR code on the shoe’s tongue. When held in front of a webcam, the code provides access to a number of different interactive games on Adidas website which the players can navigate with their shoe.

Ben & Jerry’s Scoop of Happiness: Ben & Jerry’s iPhone app with the Moo Vision augmented reality feature generates images related to the flavor you’re scanning which you can click on to find out more info and share with your friends on social networks.

Toyota Scion tC Take On The Machine: Toyota topped off it’s digital campaign for the 2011 Scion tC with an AR game on scion’s site. The user prints an AR marker which is used as a steering wheel to race with the new tC and win a spot in the global top 100 highscore board.

Airwalk Jim Shoe: In November, Airwalk used an augmented reality app from GoldRun to launch invisible pop-up stores which sold a limited edition of the Jim shoe in New York and LA. To access the invisible store, customers had to use the app to locate virtual Jim shoes at dedicated locations and take a photo of the shoe to gain a pass code to the Airwark e-commerce site. Airwalk reported that since then its e-commerce site has witnessed the most traffic in the company’s history.

Subject60: Volvo and EuroRSCG 4D teamed up for the promotion of the Volvo S60 by organizing five secret parties in Berlin, London, Paris, Milan and Madrid. In order to get an invite one had to find one of the code cubes, hidden in “naughty” locations around the city. The project was in collaboration with hand picked lifestyle bloggers and blog readers were given clues to discover the hidden cubes by using the Layar Augmented Reality browser.

Toyota Auris virtual test drive: Toyota enabled car enthusiasts to create a virtual track, by printing off special markers to place around, and take a virtual Toyota Auris for a virtual test track. They also could record their test drives and share the clips on social networking sites, as well as the Auris microsite. Toyota offered a prize for the most innovative track with the winner receiving a super-deluxe home entertainment system to encourage a larger participation.

BMW Z4: By printing off a special symbol BMW fans could drive their own BMW Z4 around their desk and colourful designs with its tyres. The videos and images taken could then be shared on social networks.

Skoda Fabia RS Augmented Reality Test Drive: Yet another virtual test drive, this time transforming the user into a rally driver, making it more like a race car game, rather than a regular test drive ride. The user can then share his lap time with friends on Facebook.

Nestlé Kit Kat Augmented Reality Gig: Agency Skive Digital of London created an Augmented Reality campaign for Kit Kat UK . Holding one of the special AR Kit Kat “4-Finger” bar packages in front of a webcam unlocked a one-off Scouting for Girls performance. The special packs also offered consumers the chance to win one of thousands of £100 Ticketmaster vouchers throughKit Kat Music Break.

Virtual mirrors: Created by IBM and EZFace. The special kiosks were placed in stores in North and South America, Europe, and Asia, covering major cosmetics brands, like L’Oreal, Maybelline, Covergirl and Revlon. The shopper can take a picture and virtually try on makeup, while the “mirror” takes into consideration such things as skin tone, facial features, and product colour. The mirror can make recommendations and allow the consumer to share a virtual makeover image with friends online.

Unilever’s “Share Happy”: Unilever created an interactive ice cream machine that asks consumers to share a smile on Facebook to get a free ice cream.

Neuvo watches: Neuvo, a collaborative company from Montreal has created a free “try it before you buy it” iPhone app, which connects to Neuvo’s website and on-line store.

Olympus PEN: Olympus created a viral product demo with which you can virtually explore the camera’s features and also allows you take pictures and using the camera’s various filters. Afterwards you can share your pics and videos with friends online.

H&M: H&M used Goldrun’s app to enable shoppers in New York to try on virtually the clothes it features in its shop windows. The shoppers this way gained a discount code and share their looks with their Facebook friends.

Seventeen.com and J.C. Penney’s AR Dressing Room: As part of their back to school campaign, Seventeen and J.C. Penny launched a virtual dressing room through which teens could“try on” clothing using a webcam, and shop their items of preference through the J.C. Penneywebsite. .

Tissot Reality: Through its website Tissot lets users print and cut out a paper strip in order to try on virtual watches. Tissot showcased the application with an interactive Selfridges window display. This reportedly resulted in increasing in-store sales at Selfridges by 85%, while theYouTube views of the campaign have surpassed 70,000.

Hublot: Swiss watchmaker Hublot launched an iPhone application that allows consumers to view the Hublot collection, design their own models and digitally trying them on.

Girard-Perregaux: Yet another watchmaker that created an iPhone app that allows users to “try on” watches.

HomeScan: US real estate agency ZipRealty through its iPhone application HomeScan allows its potential customers to look through their phone and instantly discover which homes near them are for sale (or recently sold). Homescan provides info like the asking (or sold) price, photos and distance from where the user stands.

Iron Man 2: For the promotion of Iron Man 2 Paramount and Marvel invited Iron Man fans to take a look inside the Iron Man’s head. Through the movie’s website and with use of ther webcam, fans can try on Iron Man’s helmet take photos to download or share over Facebook and Twitter.

Dutch Public Service Billboard: The Dutch government placed augmented reality billboards in Amsterdam and Rotterdam to raise awareness about violence against public service employees. The billboards augmented a live street view with a violent altercation, making onlookers realize the impact of their inactivity against violence.

WWF: In an effort to raise awareness around the plight of the siberian tiger, WWF printed special t-shirts and distributed them online and to key stores in Moscow, with placed AR video mirrors that would instantly active the AR experience the moment a WWF t-shirt was detected. The idea was to simulate what a siberian tiger experiences when it gets shot.

Forever21: Fashion brand Forever21 installed an augmented reality billboard in Times Squarethis past June, in which a model dressed in Forever21 clothes seemed to interact with the crowd by taking photos of the passers by or selecting people, picking them up and throwing them into a Forever21 bag.

Streetmuseum: Museum of London’s iPhone app overlays specific locations around London with historical photographs mixing past with present. The app guides the user to these locations with the use of map or GPS.

Condé Nast Traveller City Guide: Condé Nast Traveler spiced up its iPhone apps by adding anaugmented reality feature which allows the traveller to discover nearby attraction simply by scanning the area around with the iPhone camera.

Virtual Vacay: Hotels.com created Virtual Vacay, that enables users to take a virtual tour of ten US cities and find out information about local events and hotels in a fun way. The virtual tourists can even even send personalized post cards from their virtual travels to their friends.

Seer: IBM’s Seer application helped its users navigate Wimbledon 2010. The users could find information about the closest cash machine’s location, the wait time for certain services and even see live video from the matches, through their iPhone or Android camera.

Summing up, in 2010, branded AR application focused more on utility features, like Olympus PEN, that invited the consumers to interact with the products in order to drive sales. Many of them, like Adidas Originals, also used gaming mechanics in order to engage their customers and make their content viral. Another trend in AR marketing for 2010 was personalization. With gen Y remaining indifferent towards celebrity endorsed products, advertisement campaigns, like the Forever21 billboard, preferred to make the consumer their star, rather than a Hollywood actor or a supermodel.

The future of AR evolves super fast, will brands be able to catch up? Recently we posted about a Japanese device that can augment taste, could it be that with some AR magic, in the nextNespesso ad we will be, not only able to share a cup of coffee with George Clooney, but enjoy our Nespesso’s aroma too?

Claire Boonstra, Layar Co-founder told us that her favorite AR case for 2010 is the iPhone and Android game Find Copān, which invites the players to a smartphone treasure hunt around Dublin City Centre. The game is inspired by the Mayan civilization and challenges the participants to locate virtual ancient tombs & treasure chests in order to win prizes.

Len Kendall, co-founder at the3six5, Digital Account Supervisor at GolinHarris and writer forGOOD singled out the Star Wars Arcade Falcon Gunner: “ I love this concept because it falls into the augmented reality realm and it’s incredibly simple. As of today, many AR applications are unapproachable to the masses because 1) they’re not used to the technology or 2) they don’t see the investment necessary to learn the nuances of individual AR apps are worth the time of the outcome. In other words, the entertainment or utility of these applications isn’t outweighing the input.

The Star Wars game took a widely adopted behavior (which was viewing the world through their smartphone’s screen, via their camera) and then simply layered a game on top of it. In my mind this was a perfect fusion of reality and a fictional world.” In terms of favorite branded augmented application for 2010 he picked the Forever 21 billboard in Times Square, we mentioned above: “In tune with my thought above, the F21 AR set up was very smart because it introduced the technology to people en masse and created an experience where consumers became the instant authorities. One person in the crowd would stop and notice the the technology in play, then explain the situation to those around them. And in this particular case, it didn’t require a smartphone device which removed a large barrier to entry.”

Macala Wright Lee, CEO of Fashionably Digital and founder of FashionablyMarketing.Me shared with us her favorite AR applications: “One of the best uses of augmented reality for 2010 was Tissot’s Augmented Reality Window (mentioned above) at Selfridges London, where shoppers that passed by were able to try a selection of 28 different styles and select the finish and color of their wristband. This is a great example a retailer to use technology in it’s visual merchandising; the interaction with the product from outside the store is more likely to draw them in!

My favorite campaign was H&M’s Augmented Reality Campaign (mentioned above) that they launched with GoldRun because it combined several technologies at once; augmented reality, gelocation and mobile apps. The GoldRun app is designed to drive traffic to physical and online destinations, increase product sales and enhance brand engagement within a certain geographic location for a predetermined amount of time, in this case – 10 days in New York City. In 2011, I hope to see more brands combining AR and QR Codes into their Gelocation Marketing strategy and campaigns. The key to developing successful campaigns that provide customer engagement as well as translate to sale will be making sure that they support the local communities they’re used in while creating unforgettable experiences for the customers using them. Campaigns that combine these technologies in ways that take the online consumer offline and make the transition of that experience seamless have gotten it right. Both the H&M and Tissot campaigns had parts of this right.”

Which domain name you want depends on what you do. On how you make money online now and how you plan to make money online.

Are you producing? A producer or the producer?

Are you selling? A seller or the seller?

CHOICE?

Whether you’re the producer or the seller, the name you pick is either what people want — or what you teach them to be looking for. From buy-books-online.com to Amazon.com.

HAVING IT ALL

keyword-domain-name or brand-domain-name is a false dilemma. It pretends we can only go after one term, one thing: “Either we have brand.com and can forget about buy coffee mugs traffic or we go with buy-coffee-mugs”

You can easily have it all with brand.com as your domain name and your desired generic terms appearing on-page.

What’s your take on the whole brand vs. keyword thing?

We’ve been big fans of that right side panel in the New Twitter since its release. With the addition of streaming iTunes previews, we were impressed. With the latest additions, we’re floored:

blip.tv: Watch more than 50,000 independently-produced Web TV shows.

Instagram: View mobile photos, personalized with Instagram’s colorful filters.

Rdio: When a subscriber Tweets out a song, you can listen to full-length songs right inside the details pane, for the first time ever.

SlideShare: Read and share entire presentations, directly on Twitter.

Dipdive: See photos, videos and new works from Dipdive’s community of artists.

As Twitter says, in its blog:

We’re on a mission to give you more great multimedia content on Twitter, and today we’re adding five new companies to bring you independent TV shows, photos, works of art, slide presentations and entire songs, all right inside the details pane.

In full, you’ll now see content from over 20 partners. However, the addition of Instagram, Rdio and the other ones featured in the blog are huge. As we’ve said, the New Twitter really does give dedicated Twitter clients such as HootSuite and TweetDeck a run for their money. Now, if we could add a request, we’d still love to have multiple account support, please.

Twitter has just expanded and enhanced the location layer of its API.

The changes will make it easier for developers to interface with various datasets and offer better location-based experiences within their apps.

When Twitter Places launched back in June, it was clear that with the right implementations, the implications of a geo-aware Twitter could be vast.

Over the course of the last six months however, the location layer within tweets really hasn’t been used beyond the official apps and a smattering of services. Location-based networks such asFoursquare and Gowalla could associate a check-in tweet with Twitter Places; but for external apps, surfacing this data hasn’t really been possible.

As Developer Advocate Matt Harris posted to the Twitter API Announcements Google Group, that may soon change.

Twitter now has more extensive information for finding tweets about places using the place operator in the Search API.

Here’s the interesting part: This operator isn’t limited just to the Twitter Places data set. Rather, developers can also call up data sets from a variety of partners, including A&E Television Networks and History, Gowalla, OpenTable, TomTom, Yellow Pages Group (Canada) and Zagat.

This means developers, using the data set alias for any of these providers, can access search information about a specific location.

Where this really has immediate potential is with developers who are already interacting with one of the partner data sets. For instance, if your web app already plugs into OpenTable to offer restaurant information, you can now easily add recent tweets from that location to your app.

Interestingly, two of the biggest data sets, Facebook Places and Foursquare, are not on Twitter’s partner list.Facebook we can understand; Facebook Places is very much a mobile offering at this point in time. Foursquare’s omission is less clear. Foursquare data can still be mapped to Twitter Places when a checkin is tweeted by Foursquare, so we don’t understand the omission of the data set on the other end.

Perhaps the rumored upcoming Foursquare API extension will answer some of these questions.

When you use a search engine, you often get thousands, or millions, or results… but where do those results come from? When were they published? How do results from news sites differ from results from social media? A new service has just launched that aims to answer these questions and more.

Hitsplitter analyses Google search results, allowing you to find out where in the world, and on what types of sites, people write about brands, products, people or any keyword.

You can even look at how different keywords compare, allowing you to see, for example, how many people are writing about the iPhone compared to Android. So, you can see that among US-based blogs, Engadget has written most about the iPad, while Gawker had the most mentions of rival tablet the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Why would you want to do this? It’s really aimed at hardcore web researchers but if you’re the kind of person who loves to pore through statistics, it’s fascinating to see how stats for your web searches break down.

It’s possible to see, for example, that Russian websites have mentioned Wikileaks the most of any country over the past week, while (perhaps unsurprisingly) there’s barely a mention of the controversial website on US government domains. There are more interesting example searches in the video below.

The site, launched today by Dutch founder Stefan Hoevenaar, is aimed at journalists, economists, linguists, marketers, etymologists, brand watchers and cyber-geographers; but anyone who enjoys a bit of info-porn should try it out

We’re having a blast tonight playing with Cortex, an insanely fast, beautifully built extension for Google Chrome. It’s lightweight as all get-out, and it lets you share content all over the web literally faster than you can say, “Hey, look at this.”

Here’s the gist of it: Install the extension, find content you want to share, then click and hold. When you do, your mouse will be surrounded by a wheel of options. Flick your mouse in the correct direction, release your finger and voilà, your content is shared toTwitter, to Tumblr, to a specific Facebook friend’s wall — wherever you desire — accompanied by a charming “whoosh” sound.

The entire process takes about two seconds, and it’s as good-looking as it is fast.

The Cortex interface is incredibly unique. We’re generally big fans of apps that get out of your way when you don’t need them; we love it when features are unobtrusive and recede gracefully.

In that sense alone, Cortex is the perfect antidote to the array of hideous sharing mechanisms that populate the web today — those obnoxious bars, frames and buttons that clutter up the visual space and make your eyes long for rest. From a design perspective, Cortex is a breath of entirely fresh air.

In terms of user experience, the extension also makes sharing incredibly easy for users. It chooses header text and shortens URLs; it even lets users share just an image or specific selected text. Cortex also lets you track your history of shares. The only thing we wish worked a tad better is image sharing; right now, Cortex sends a link to Twitter and Facebook when we try to share images.

Right now, you can share to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Instapaper. More options will be coming soon.

Here’s a brief demo video that shows how Cortex works:

Cortex was just launched along with the all-new Chrome Web Store. It comes from the brain of Googleintern-turned-entrepreneur Joey Primiani, who said in an email, “Learning from building successful products at Google, I love focusing on things people use on a daily basis. It’s a technology that I think is really focused, very simple and useful.”

Expect to see tablet and mobile features for Cortex soon. In the meantime, give it a shot and let us know what you think in the comments.

Anytime that we get a new toy, we have to go digging around to find the best features. The Chrome Web Store is no different. We’ve been so excited about the App Store that we’ve been downloading app after app since it went live. In all fairness, many of the ones that we have listed here simply create easily-accessible links. That means that you should be able to access a number of them no matter what browser you’re using. The Chrome App Store has just brought some great links…err apps to the spotlight.

We’ll re-visit this topic in a couple of weeks when the store picks up somewhat. For now, the best of the best? They’re all listed here. So get your download finger clicking and let’s go:

TweetDeck

TweetDeck on Chrome is a wholly more satisfying experience than what you’ve ever seen on the desktop. First off, it’s perfect in its implementation. The ability to have a Home column, where all of your accounts are merged into one incoming stream view, is priceless. Beyond that, though, it just works. It does everything exactly as you’d think it should, and it does it very well.

Oh, and there’s the fact that ChromeDeck (as it is affectionately known) has managed to get user streams into a web-based Twitter application. That’s something that even the New Twitter hasn’t been able to do!

Scribble

Scribble will be your lifesaver if, like me, you have a habit of opening Notepad or TextEdit to scribble a short reminder note. Whether doing so in a meeting, taking notes during a phone call or just trying to keep things organized, I’m addicted to notes.

Scribble allows you to create notes, keep them easily accessible and even give a desktop popup reminder when something is due. Finished with a note? Just delete it and it’s gone for good. Oh, there’s also offline access for all of your notes, which is invaluable. We love the fact that you can title each note, then add full details in the text below. The desktop notifications are a dream, as well.

Minus

Minus is, simply put, simple photo sharing. While you likely use something like Picasa or Flickr, Minus is clean, easy and pretty darn sexy if we do say so ourselves. Just open the app, drag in photos and let Minus handle the rest. You have options to share, options to edit and you don’t even have to have a Minus account to share your galleries. Of course, there are advantages to signing up, but we love the simplicity of just dragging, dropping and sharing instantly.

Entanglement

If time-wasting brain-benders are your thing, thenEntanglement is amazing. If they’re not, it’s still worth a try. The object is simple — create a path with hexagonal tiles. With a beautifully-designed game board, and impressive music score to match, the game is a simple joy that can be frustratingly difficult to master.

The controls are simple — arrow keys and your spacebar. The paths are fun to figure out and the application won’t suck you in for hours unless you want it to. Casual games such as this are always a winner, and Entanglement is no exception. We also love that there’s a social aspect to it, as you can post your scores on a leaderboard and compete with your friends or perfect strangers.

Sketchpad

In all fairness, Sketchpad is just another image creation app. But it’s such a cool thing that we have to include it as well. We’ve honestly note seen responsiveness from an HTML5 application that can hold a candle to what Sketchpad does. But what is it? Well, it’s as if MS Paint and Chrome had an illicit one-night stand and produced a drawing tablet.

There’s no support for Wacom tablets, so you’re limited to your traditional input devices, but Sketpchad is incredibly fun to play with so you should add it to your list.
