There is a step by step guide below.

Main Image Source

Hidden commands in windows …

Without mysteries, life would be very dull indeed. What would be left to strive for if everything were known?
Just like the commands of Windows, The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible. If you turn the pages and insert your head in the basic of Windows then there are some thing to explore, here are few examples of some hidden secret commands in Windows:

1. ‘systeminfo’
It boasts how long it can stay up. Whereas previous versions of Windows were coy about how long they went between boots, XP is positively proud of its stamina.
Go to the Command Prompt in the Accessories menu from the All Programs start button option, and then type ‘systeminfo’. The computer will produce a lot of useful info, including the uptime. If you want to keep
these, type ‘systeminfo > info.txt‘. This creates a file called info.txt you can look at later with Notepad. (Professional Edition only).

2. gpedit
You can delete files immediately, without having them move to the Recycle Bin first. Go to the start menu, select Run… and type ‘ gpedit.msc‘; then select User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Explorer and find the Do not move deleted files to the Recycle Bin setting. Set it.
Poking around in gpedit will reveal a great many interface and system options, but take care — some may stop your computer behaving as you wish.
(Professional Edition only).

3. rundll32.exe
You can lock your XP workstation with two clicks of the mouse. Create a new shortcut on your desktop using a right mouse click, and enter ‘rundll32.exe
user32.dll,LockWorkStation‘ in the location field. Give the shortcut a name you like. That’s it — just double click on it and your computer will be locked. And if that’s not easy enough, Windows key + L will do the same.

4. sysoc.inf
XP hides some system software you might want to remove, such as Windows Messenger, but you can tickle it and make it disgorge everything. Using Notepad or Edit, edit the text file /windows/inf/sysoc.inf, search for the word ‘hide‘ and remove it. You can then go to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Windows Components and there will be your prey, exposed and vulnerable.

5. schtasks
For those skilled in the art of DOS batch files, XP has a number of interesting new commands. These include ‘eventcreate‘ and ‘eventtriggers‘ for creating and watching system events, ‘typeperf’ for monitoring performance of various subsystems, and ‘schtasks’ for handling scheduled tasks. As usual, typing the command name followed by /? will give a list of options — they’re all far too baroque to go into here.

6. ipv6
XP has IP version 6 support (the next generation of IP). Unfortunately this is more than your ISP has, so you can only experiment with this on your LAN. Type ‘ipv6 install‘ into Run… (it’s OK, it won’t ruin your existing network setup) and then ‘ipv6 /?‘ at the command line to find out more. If you don’t know what IPv6 is, don’t worry and don’t bother.

7. taskkill
You can at last get rid of tasks on the computer from the command line by using ‘taskkill /pid‘ and the task number, or just ‘tskill’ and the process number.
Find that out by typing ‘tasklist’, which will also tell you a lot about what’s going on in your system.

8. zipfldr.dll
XP will treat Zip files like folders, which is nice if you’ve got a fast machine. On slower machines, you
can make XP leave zip files well alone by typing ‘regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll‘ at the command line. If you change your mind later, you can put things back as they were by typing ‘regsvr32 zipfldr.dll‘.

18 Impressive Computer Shortcuts and tricks!

Are you a basic computer user? SPEED UP UR ACROBAT READER (ALMOST LIKE NOTEPAD)
Do u get irritated when acrobat reader takes 5/10 seconds to load when you want to open a pdf document. There is a way to speed up the loading.
1. Go to the installation folder of acrobat reader
(C:program filesadobeacrobatreader.. whatever)
2. Move all the files and folders from the “plugins” directory to the “Optional” directory. (I repeat.. cut and paste the files NOT copy & paste).
Also make sure that acrobat reader is not open else it will lock the files and not allow you to move the files).
Now your acrobat reader will load very fast
and almost as good as notepad..
7. Unzip online using WobZip
Are Internet Cookies Harmful?
Compare suite: Auto compare differences in two files instantly!
Evernote lets you remember things from your daily life using your computer, phone, and the web
8. Remove the Username and picture from Windows XP New Start Menu
The User account picture can be removed by turning off the Welcome Screen. Or, by switching to Windows Classic theme. Follow the method described in this article if you want to remove the username and picture from the Start Menu, without disabling the Welcome Screen and Windows XP Theme.
For those who want to remove the user name and user account picture from Start Menu, in order to have a blank blue panel at the top, try this:
Start Windows Explorer and go to this folder:
C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataMicrosoftUser Account Pictures
From that folder, rename the BMP file which corresponds to your user account.
( For example, if your username is Robert, rename Robert.bmp to old_Robert.bmp )
Next, rename the following folder:
C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataMicrosoftUser Account PicturesDefault Pictures
to something else, say…
C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataMicrosoftUser Account PicturesNo_Default Pictures
To remove the user name, follow these steps
Start regedit.exe and navigate to the this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Policies Explorer
In the right-pane, set NoUserNameInStartMenu value-data to 1
Close Regedit.exe and restart Windows.
You’ll end up with a blue space at the top of the Start Menu.
9. To get back the username and the picture, reverse the above procedure.
For the New Start Menu, Windows XP looks for the <username>.bmp file in the folder
C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataMicrosoftUser Account Pictures
If the file is not found, it takes a picture from the “Default Pictures” sub-folder. By renaming the <username>.bmp and the “Default Pictures” folder, you’re giving no chance for Windows to fetch an image for the Start Menu
10. Notepad Tricks.
Well quite old but here is d complete collection
Step 1: Open Notepad
Step 2: Write following line in the notepad.
this app can break
Step 3: Save this file as xxx.txt
Step 4: Close the notepad.
Step 5: Open the file again.
or
1> Open Notepad
2> Enter four words separated by spaces, wherein the first word has 4 letters, the next two have three letters, and the last word has five letters
3> DON’T hit enter at the end of the line.
4> Save the file.
5> Close Notepad.
6> Reopen Notepad.
7> Open the file you just saved.
or
Open a note pad
type Bush hid the facts
save that file,
close it
again open and see…
11. NOTEPAD “world trade centre trick”.. :Rahul
Did you know that the flight number of the plane that had hit WTC …on
9/11 was Q33N ….Open your Notepad in ur computer and type the flight
number i.e Q33N… Increase the Font Size to 72, Change the Font to
Wingdings. U will be amazed by the findings.
12. log trick !! make ur Notepad a diary !!
Sometimes we want to insert current data and time, whenever we open the file in the notepad. If you are a lazy person like me, who don’t like to press F5 whenever you open a notepad. Then here is a trick to avoid this. Just add a .LOG in the first line of your text file and close it.
Whenever you open the file with that text in the first line in the notepad, it will insert the current date and time at the end of the file. You can start entering your text after that.
WHY?
The reason this happens:
In notepad, any other 4-3-3-5 letter word combo will have the same results.
It is all to do with a limitation in Windows. Text files containing Unicode UTF-16-encoded Unicode are supposed to start with a “Byte-Order Mark” (BOM), which is a two-byte flag that tells a reader how the following UTF-16 data is encoded.
1) You are saving to 8-bit Extended ASCII (Look at the Save As / Encoding format)
2) You are reading from 16-bit UNICODE (You guessed it, look at the Save As / Encoding format)
This is why the 18 8-bit characters are being displayed as 9 (obviously not supported by your codepage) 16-bit UNICODE characters
13. SPEED UP MENU DISPLAY.!!
When using the start menu the you will notice a delay between different tiers of the menu hierarchy. For the fastest computer experience possible I recommend changing this value to zero. This will allow the different tiers to appear instantly.
Start Regedit. If you are unfamiliar with regedit please refer to our FAQ on how to get started.
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop
Select MenuShowDelay from the list on the right.
Right on it and select Modify.
Change the value to 0.
Reboot your computer.
14. CLICKING * .AVI FILES ON EXPLORER CAUSING 100% CPU USAGE.!!
Well windows seem to have a REALLY big problem when it comes to reading AVI files. It seems that when you click on an AVI file in explorer, it’ll try to read the entire AVI file to determine the width, height, etc. of the AVI file (this is displayed in the Properties window). Now the problem with Windows is that if you have a broken/not fully downloaded AVI file that doesnt contain this info, Windows will scan the entire AVI file trying to figure out all these properties which in the process will probably cause 100% CPU usage and heavy memory usage. To solve this problem all you have to do is the following:
1. Open up regedit
2. Goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTSystemFileAssociations.avishellexPropertyHandler
3. Delete the “Default” value which should be “{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}”
Voila! Please not that this will no longer provide you with the windows properties displaying the AVI file information such as width, height, bitrate etc. But its a small price to pay for saving you resources.
NOTE: Please use caution when using regedit. Improper usage may cause windows to behave imcorrectly. Also, I cannot be held resposible. Backup your registry first.
CD ROM STOPS AUTOPLAYING/AUTORUN.!!
And the AutoPlay Tab has disappeared in My Computer, Devices With Removable Storage, Right Click on CDROM, Properties.
Solution: The service: “Shell Hardware Detection” has been set to Manual or Disabled. Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. Return this service to “Automatic”.
15. How to make your Desktop Icons Transparent
Go to Control Panel > System, > Advanced > Performance area > Settings button Visual Effects tab “Use drop shadows for icon labels on the Desktop”
16. DISPLAY MESSAGE ON STARTUP.
Start regedit, if you are unfamiliar with regedit please see our FAQ.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon
Modify the key legalnoticecaption with what you want to name the window.
Modify the key legalnoticetext with what you want the window to say. Restart
Worth reading:
Forget Windows 7 Get Ready To Mingle With Windows 8
Hack: How To Surf The Internet 100% Anonymously
Hack: Double your internet download and page load speed from Open DNS
Hacking 101 : 4 types of deadly hacking and the story behind them

17. AUTO DELETE TEMPORARY FOLDER.!!
ll what i prefer is %temp% ” without quotes.. at Start -> Run..
this opens ur temp folder n den u cal erase it neatly// still try dis one too..
First go into gpedit.msc
Next select -> Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Terminal Services/Temporary Folder
Then right click “Do Not Delete Temp Folder Upon Exit”
Go to properties and hit disable. Now next time Windows puts a temp file in that folder it will automatically delete it when its done! Note from Forum Admin: Remember, GPEDIT (Group Policy Editor) is only available in XP Pro.
18. Make your PDF files to speak (Auto prompt)
make ur pdf files to speak
here r the shortcuts for hearing pdf files in abobe reader 6.0 or higherctrl+shift+b —->to hear the whole topic
ctrl+shift+v —->to hear the pag

njoyyyyy

How to Install RAM

These instructions will assist you in installing memory (RAM) into your computer.
Steps

1. Find out what type of RAM is required for your computer.
2. Find out how much of that type of RAM your computer can take.
3. Purchase RAM online; it's much cheaper.
4. Open your computer case (this may require a screw driver; usually a Phillips-Head.)
5. Once you have the case open, you need to locate the RAM slots on your motherboard. Most RAM slots are located on the top of the motherboard, on the right-hand side. You should see something in the computer that is similar to what you bought at the store.
6. Push the clamps OPEN to release the memory (if there is RAM already in there, which there may or may not be, depending on whether you're building a computer or altering an existing one). Remove old memory.
7. Look at the new memory and survey the motherboard memory slots. They should have a notch in each memory slot.
8. Line the notch on the motherboard up with the notch on the new memory.
9. Press gently but firmly until claps close completely. Once you have done this, the memory should be installed correctly.
10. Turn on the computer.
11. Once you have successfully booted the system, turn the machine off again and put the side panel back on the computer.
12. VOILA! You have just installed new RAM.

Tips

* If you are getting a beep when you turn on the computer, you have either installed an incorrect memory type, or you have installed the memory incorrectly. If this is a computer that you purchased at a store, you should contact the store or the manufacturer of the computer to find out what the beep code means.
* If you hear anything other than a single beep lasting one second, check your motherboards' documentation for an explanation of beep codes. Beep codes are a warning system when one or more components fails the POST (Power On Self Test), and is usually due to malfunctioning or incompatible hardware.
* If you are adding more RAM (not replacing), make sure there are enough RAM slots. Often you need to buy the exact same RAM as you currently have. Also, having a pair of 512MB is often cheaper than replacing a 512MB with a 1024MB.
* A good website to use is the crucial memory website http://www.crucial.com/ as they have a memory advisor tool which tells you how much and what type of ram your computer takes . you can also buy memory from here

Warnings

* These instructions are for Desktop computers, not Laptops.
* Make sure to discharge any possible static buildup before touching RAM; it is extremely sensitive to ESD (Electro-Static Discharge). New VoIP / Broadband phone VoIP services are launching almost on a weekly basis and it has become almost impossible to compare PC to Phone and Broadband Phone service providers without weeks and weeks of time consuming research. Each VoIP provider proclaims to have the best service and the cheapest local, long distance or international VoIP phone rates, but the differences are still substantial (up to 1000%), although in most cases the VoIP services are cheaper than most traditional telephone companies (PSTN). Choosing the right Voice over IP service for your specific need and calling pattern, especially if you make regular international calls can save you a small fortune every month.

To find and compare VoIP services on the Internet is already a mission on its own. A few of the larger, more established VoIP services (such as the Broadband phone companies like Intalk, Jive, or ITP ) are easy to find on hundreds of Internet sites. With their extensive marketing budgets and daily bombardment of press releases, they have established a market dominance in a short period of time. There are however hundreds of smaller and newer Voice over IP services with the same customer service and quality levels, even cheaper VoIP rates and monthly packages with unlimited VoIP calls.

Over the past two years a new group of VoIP service providers have been making their mark in the VoIP market. These providers are offering free VoIP calls to a wide range of destinations and are capturing a significant market share. Being the first VoIP service to offer these free calls, VoIP Buster is the best known, but every few months sister companies are launched to keep the momentum up, but all offer basically the same services. Some of the sister companies are VoipStunt, VoIPCheap, Netappel, SIP Discount, SparVoIP, Internetcalls, VoipDiscount and a few others - the larger more established Broadband phone services should take note.

We, at MyVoipProvider.com, have identified over 1400 international VoIP services (January 2008) for the residential and SOHO (small business) market and in due course each and every Broadband or Internet phone service will be included in our extensive VoIP rates database.

16 Top Softwares Downloads for Free International Calls

Download free softwares which will enable you to make unlimited calls internationally free. Certain countries (China, Saudi Arabia, and more) block anything to do with popular culture, sexual issues, women's resources, or politics. In addition, both large and small companies block sites to cut down on security breaches and boost productivity. However, sometimes you need to get somewhere on the Web. The following methods can help you get around common roadblocks.

NOTE: Violation of most terms of use by corporations can be grounds for immediate termination; in addition, universities and schools have rules that prohibit non-educational use of the Web. Use these methods at your own risk.

1. Use an IP address instead of typing in the domain name
Instead of typing in a specific domain name, try typing in the IP address instead. An IP address is the signature address/number of your computer as it is connected to the Internet. You can find the IP address of any site by using IP address tools such as Netcraft, or Whois Domain Tools.

2. Use the mobile Web
You can sometimes access the mobile version of the site that has been blocked. Use the mobile web on your phone OR computer (sites will look different that what you're used to on your computer, but you'll be able to see them). Try these resources to find the mobile Web addresses you might be looking for:

Mobile Shopping Sites
Mobile Search Engines

3. USe Google Cache to find an older version of a site
Google's cache, the way the Web page looked when Google’s spiders indexed it, is a great way to see a site that has been blocked (if you don't mind looking at an older version of the site). Simply navigate to Google's home page and use this command:
cache:www.websearch.about.com

This will show you this site (or any site you want) as it looked when Google last looked at it.

4. Use an anonymous web proxy
An anonymous Web proxy hides your identity from the sites that you visit on the Web. When you use a Web proxy to visit a blocked site, your IP address (see item number one on this list) is basically hidden, and the anonymous Web proxy substitutes its own IP address for your own. This means that if you live in a country that restricts certain sites, you will be able to visit them with an anonymous Web proxy's substitute IP address, since it will tell the powers that be that you are actually in another country (and no longer subject to their policies). Most free Web proxies will also encode the URLs that you visit, making your search history virtually untraceable.
Examples of anonymous Web proxies: Hide My Ass!, Anonymouse, Proxify.

5. Use a translation service
Most large sites have more than one language version of their content. You can find them simply by searching in your favorite search engine, for example, Google, by using this search string: "myspace france" or "wikipedia spain". Once you have found these sites, you can use a translation tool to translate the content on the page to your language, thereby bypassing the blocked site restriction and getting to where you need to go.
6. Use an anonymous HTTP proxy
An anonymous HTTP proxy is similar to an anonymous Web proxy (mentioned in this list): it's an actual server that acts as a go-between between the searcher and the site that they are trying to access.
Basically, when you use an anonymous proxy and enter in the URL that you'd like to visit anonymously, the anonymous proxy retrieves the pages BEFORE they are delivered to you. This way, the IP address and other browsing information that the remote server sees does not belong to you - it belongs to the anonymous proxy.

There are many public access anonymous proxy servers on the Web that can be used by anyone who needs to unblock blocked sites:

Proxy List
SAS Proxy List Pages
Proxy SC
Free Web Proxies
7. Use a URL redirect or shortening tool
There are many URL shortening tools on the Web that will take a long URL and shorten it to something that's easier to copy and paste. Sometimes, these shortened URLs can be used as a substitute for the actual URL of the site that you're trying to access.
For instance, if you use TinyURL to shorten the URL of websearch.about.com, you would get this link: http://tinyurl.com/70we, which you could use to access this site (if it was blocked) rather than the actual URL, which is http://websearch.about.com.

8. Try an RSS reader
You can use an RSS reader to subscribe to the sites you'd like to see that are blocked (if they have an RSS feed). You can search within a feed reader for the site's feed you're looking for; most feed readers will also have a list of Most Popular feeds that you can browse through to see if the sites you're trying to access are there already.
9. Convert the IP address to a decimal number
In the first item on this list, I told you about using an IP address instead of typing in an entire domain name. You can also convert an IP address to a decimal number to unblock blocked sites. Use the tools mentioned in item one of this list, and then use this IP Address to Decimal Conversion tool to get what you need.
10. Try using Tor
Tor is a "a network of virtual tunnels that allows people and groups to improve their privacy and security on the Internet." It's a free software download that basically protects your activities on the Web from being tracked, and will allow you to access blocked sites. You can read more about Tor at the Tor overview, and learn about how to install Tor at the Tor documentation page. Since Tor does run through multiple nodes and networks, it tends to make your browsing a bit slow; however, you can bypass that by only using Tor when you are trying to unblock blocked sites (try the Tor button addon to make this even easier).

Auto Shutdown Pc without using any external program......

METHOD # 1

Do you know that you can make your PC shutdown at a time u wish to?
Here is the trick!!
How To Make A Shutdown Timer!

Step 1:

Right click on your desktop and choose "New=>shortcuts".

Step 2:

In the box that says "Type the location of the shortcut",
type in "shutdown -s -t 3600" without the quotation marks and click next.

Note: 3600 are the amount of seconds before your computer shuts down. So , 60secs*60mins=3600secs.

Step 3:

Make up a name for the shortcut and you're done.
You can change the icon by right clicking=>properities=>change icon=>browse.

To abort:

To make an abort key to stop the shutdown timer just create another shortcut and make
the "location of the shortcut" to " shutdown -a" without the quotes.

METHOD # 2

Here is another trick to shutdown at a specific time, for example you wish to shutdown at 11:35am. Type this in
start=>Run

Type Code: at 11:35 shutdown -s

to abort

Code:

shutdown -a

take note: all time are in 24hr, example u would like to shutdown at 8:30pm, you should type

"at 20:30 shutdown -s" without quote

METHOD # 3

you can use a batch for that as well it makes it easier to use
just run the batch and enter the time you want it to shutdown

shutdown.bat
Type Code:
@echo off
title Scheduled Shutdown Batch Example by chacha1234
color A
echo Enter Time To Shutdown (example 19:30)
set /p stime=
cls
at %stime% ""shutdown -s -t 00"" >nul
echo Your PC Will Auto Shutdown At %stime%
echo Press Any Key To Exit
pause >nul
exit

also you can add -c "desired message" at the end of the shutdown command
for example
shutdown -s -t 60 -c "Shutdown Pc"

using this command u can also schedule ur pc to restart
for example
shutdown -r -t 60 -c "Restarting Pc"

Google Instant Search: How to Enable or Disable Google Instant?

Google Instant is the latest search enhancement. His is to show the results as your type. The main aim for this pushing of technology is to help the user get better and faster results. The main idea of this has emerged from the fact that generally type slowly but read quickly, “typically taking 300 milliseconds between keystrokes, but only 30 milliseconds (a tenth of the time!) to glance at another part of the page.” Thus, this signifies that it will be more beneficial to scan a results page as you type.

To understand how it works, we shall discuss it in details for you. As you will be starting to search your search terms, Google Instant Search will automatically show results for a popular search that does begin with those letters. Now, if you do not see the results you desire, then you should just keep typing and the results shall be updated dynamically. The basics of search in Google do remain the same, and so do the way of ranking results and displaying the relevant ones.

One of the most useful changes you shall observe while using this feature is that you shall find the most appropriate content much faster, without even having to finish typing your entire search term, or even pressing “search”. Google Instant can save 2-5 seconds per search. Another advantage is that you shall even be entitled to viewing of results as you type, thus formulating a better search term by providing instant feedback. Also, at times when you don’t know exactly what to search, predictions may be of great help in guiding your search. Because of the instant results, you can actually see the entire path in steps till you reach your desired result.

Earlier, before the use of Google Instant, a typical search would take 9 seconds to enter a search term, but now the case is not so. For information, 15 new technologies are at present contributing to the Google Instant functionality.

To either enable or disable Google Instant, you shall follow the steps given below:

* Go to the Settings tab of the top right of your Google search home page.
* Select the Search Settings from the drop down menu.
* Select “Use Google Instant — predictions and results appear while typing” at the Google Instant category to enable Google Instant.
* Otherwise, select “Do not use Google Instant” at the Google Instant category to disable Google Instant.
* Now, click on the “Save Preferences” button at the lower right corner of the page.

There you have it, a successful enabling or disabling of Google Instant. The Wizards let you choose the content and how the document looks, while the templates have a preset layout.

- Excel. A spreadsheet program used for organizing and calculating numerical data. It is ideal for keeping track of all types of budgets and accounts. Like all spreadsheets, it takes the form of a grid containing cells into which you input figures and formulas to calculate the figures. Excel allows you to have several spreadsheets or worksheets within the same document, and to enter calculations using figures from each of the worksheets. This is particularly useful when organizing a major event that includes mini-projects.

- Outlook. A desktop information management program that contains an address book into which you can enter contact details for friends, family and business associates. Also has a diary and calendar that will help you to keep track of your current schedule and appointments. It is so slow that you can brew a cup of coffee and read the paper before it boots up or downloads your e-mail?

Before you shell out money for more RAM or a faster, bigger hard drive, there are some simple tricks you can try to improve the performance of your computer. Phoenix, Arizona-based computer consultant Tony Hawari offers these tips:

1. Is your computer using the most current version of its operating system, and are all the latest service packs and security patches installed? Your computer should automatically download upgrades. If it doesn’t, contact your IT person and ask.
2. Do you have the latest version of your Internet browser installed? You can check for updates in Firefox by clicking Help and then Check for Updates. For Internet Explorer, just run Windows Update on your computer.
3. Use free software such as Ccleaner (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner) to clean out all your temp files including Internet history and other miscellaneous files.
4. Make sure you have only one anti-virus software program installed. If you’re not paying for it, then you are not getting the latest protection for new viruses.
5. Disable excess pop-up blockers. Current Internet browsers have pop-up blockers built-in as do most anti-virus programs, so you may have several installed without knowing it. Select the one that you like best and disable the others.
6. Check what programs are trying to open at start-up. On a PC, search for System Configuration; on a Mac look under System Preferences/Accounts/Login or System Preferences/Applications/Startup (depending on your OS). Having too many programs trying to start will slow you down. The only programs you need to enable at start-up are a syncing program (if you’re syncing to your smartphone) and your anti-virus program. Some programs, like iTunes and Acrobat, will install unneeded services. Disable them.
7. Do registry tweaks! Search online for free tweaks available to optimize your operating system. PCTools.com keeps you up-to-date on the latest tricks for performance enhancement. Free MacWare has similar tools and tips for the Mac.
8. Defrag. Every time you add new programs and files to your computer it becomes “fragmented.” You can schedule regular defragmentation of your computer to keep it running smoothly. Defragmentation takes a while, so do it when you won’t need access to your computer for a few hours.
9. Adjust your settings. By simply using the performance tools on your computer, you can make some great improvements. Adjust the visual effects, power settings and more to ensure your computer is operating at maximum efficiency.

10. Go external. If you need more disk space, use an external hard drive to store huge files and programs that slow you down.

Once you get your computer to a satisfactory performance level, you may want to invest in an imaging program that brings your computer back to its current level without losing data. Norton Ghost from Symantec performs a full back-up of your hard drive in case you should run into issues down the road.

19 secrets of Windows XP

1. It boasts how long it can stay up. Whereas previous versions of Windows were coy about how long they went between boots, XP is positively proud of its stamina. Go to the Command Prompt in the Accessories menu from the All Programs start button option, and then type 'systeminfo'. The computer will produce a lot of useful info, including the uptime. If you want to keep these, type 'systeminfo > info.txt'. This creates a file called info.txt you can look at later with Notepad. (Professional Edition only).

2. You can delete files immediately, without having them move to the Recycle Bin first. Go to the Start menu, select Run... and type ' gpedit.msc'; then select User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Explorer and find the Do not move deleted files to the Recycle Bin setting. Set it. Poking around in gpedit will reveal a great many interface and system options, but take care -- some may stop your computer behaving as you wish. (Professional Edition only).

3. You can lock your XP workstation with two clicks of the mouse. Create a new shortcut on your desktop using a right mouse click, and enter 'rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation' in the location field. Give the shortcut a name you like. That's it -- just double click on it and your computer will be locked. And if that's not easy enough, Windows key + L will do the same.

4. XP hides some system software you might want to remove, such as Windows Messenger, but you can tickle it and make it disgorge everything. Using Notepad or Edit, edit the text file /windows/inf/sysoc.inf, search for the word 'hide' and remove it. You can then go to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Windows Components and there will be your prey, exposed and vulnerable.

5. For those skilled in the art of DOS batch files, XP has a number of interesting new commands. These include 'eventcreate' and 'eventtriggers' for creating and watching system events, 'typeperf' for monitoring performance of various subsystems, and 'schtasks' for handling scheduled tasks. As usual, typing the command name followed by /? will give a list of options -- they're all far too baroque to go into here.

6. XP has IP version 6 support -- the next generation of IP. Unfortunately this is more than your ISP has, so you can only experiment with this on your LAN. Type 'ipv6 install' into Run... (it's OK, it won't ruin your existing network setup) and then 'ipv6 /?' at the command line to find out more. If you don't know what IPv6 is, don't worry and don't bother.

7. You can at last get rid of tasks on the computer from the command line by using 'taskkill /pid' and the task number, or just 'tskill' and the process number. Find that out by typing 'tasklist', which will also tell you a lot about what's going on in your system.

8. XP will treat Zip files like folders, which is nice if you've got a fast machine. On slower machines, you can make XP leave zip files well alone by typing 'regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll' at the command line. If you change your mind later, you can put things back as they were by typing 'regsvr32 zipfldr.dll'.

9. XP has ClearType -- Microsoft's anti-aliasing font display technology -- but doesn't have it enabled by default. It's well worth trying, especially if you were there for DOS and all those years of staring at a screen have given you the eyes of an astigmatic bat. To enable ClearType, right click on the desktop, select Properties, Appearance, Effects, select ClearType from the second drop-down menu and enable the selection. Expect best results on laptop displays. If you want to use ClearType on the Welcome login screen as well, set the registry entry HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT/Control Panel/Desktop/FontSmoothingType to 2.

10. You can use Remote Assistance to help a friend who's using network address translation (NAT) on a home network, but not automatically. Get your pal to email you a Remote Assistance invitation and edit the file. Under the RCTICKET attribute will be a NAT IP address, like 192.168.1.10. Replace this with your chum's real IP address -- they can find this out by going to

Code:
www.whatismyip.com-- and get them to make sure that they've got port 3389 open on their firewall and forwarded to the errant computer.
11. You can run a program as a different user without logging out and back in again. Right click the icon, select Run As... and enter the user name and password you want to use. This only applies for that run. The trick is particularly useful if you need to have administrative permissions to install a program, which many require. Note that you can have some fun by running programs multiple times on the same system as different users, but this can have unforeseen effects.

12. Windows XP can be very insistent about you checking for auto updates, registering a Passport, using Windows Messenger and so on. After a while, the nagging goes away, but if you feel you might slip the bonds of sanity before that point, run Regedit, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/Advanced and create a DWORD value called EnableBalloonTips with a value of 0.

13. You can start up without needing to enter a user name or password. Select Run... from the start menu and type 'control userpasswords2', which will open the user accounts application. On the Users tab, clear the box for Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer, and click on OK. An Automatically Log On dialog box will appear; enter the user name and password for the account you want to use.

14. Internet Explorer 6 will automatically delete temporary files, but only if you tell it to. Start the browser, select Tools / Internet Options... and Advanced, go down to the Security area and check the box to Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed.

15. XP comes with a free Network Activity Light, just in case you can't see the LEDs twinkle on your network card. Right click on My Network Places on the desktop, then select Properties. Right click on the description for your LAN or dial-up connection, select Properties, then check the Show icon in notification area when connected box. You'll now see a tiny network icon on the right of your task bar that glimmers nicely during network traffic.

16. The Start Menu can be leisurely when it decides to appear, but you can speed things along by changing the registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Desktop/MenuShowDelay from the default 400 to something a little snappier. Like 0.

17. You can rename loads of files at once in Windows Explorer. Highlight a set of files in a window, then right click on one and rename it. All the other files will be renamed to that name, with individual numbers in brackets to distinguish them. Also, in a folder you can arrange icons in alphabetised groups by View, Arrange Icon By... Show In Groups.

18. Windows Media Player will display the cover art for albums as it plays the tracks -- if it found the picture on the Internet when you copied the tracks from the CD. If it didn't, or if you have lots of pre-WMP music files, you can put your own copy of the cover art in the same directory as the tracks. Just call it folder.jpg and Windows Media Player will pick it up and display it.

19. Windows key + Break brings up the System Properties dialogue box; Windows key + D brings up the desktop; Windows key + Tab moves through the taskbar buttons.

Reduce 10 Seconds Scandisk Count Down Time During XP Boot

To reduce the count down time of Windows XP during boot process ( You see this normally when your computer is not shutdown properly, Electricity failure is one of the major reasons ) , You can use the following method.
Start MS Dos Prompt (or Goto Start menu-> Run and here type CMD).
Now at command Prompt type the following command
CHKNTFS /T:4

Where 4 is the amount of time in seconds to wait before scandisk starts ( You may set it to 0 or 1 so that scandisk instantly starts or whatever you prefer )

For help about this command, You can type the following command at command prompt
CHKNTFS /?

Note: You can also type the command
CHKNTFS /T:4
at run command but in this case you will only see a splash screen of command promt and it will disappear, but your task will be done.

how to Disable Windows Error Reporting Messages

You must be well aware of Error Messages that come up whenever there is a problem with windows or any other component. We would explain each.

Break BIOS Password for Desktop :
If it's a desktop PC, erasing the cmos memory will usually clear it.

Steps:

1. Power off the computer and make sure that it is unplugged.
2. Open up your computer case. You need physical access to the motherboard to complete this procedure.
3. Find a circular, (mostly) silver metallic object on the motherboard. This is the CMOS battery.
4. CAREFULLY remove the CMOS battery and leave it out for about 120- 180 seconds. This will flush the CMOS memory which stores the BIOS password and all other configuration. (See Warnings)
5. Set the battery back into place and power on the computer.
6. The computer should then warn you that the CMOS configuration could not be found. You can either reconfigure it yourself or restore defaults. Restoring the default configuration should be fine.
7. You will notice that the BIOS password has been cleared and you can boot without it. You may reset the BIOS password to something else by going into the BIOS configuration and setting a new User Password.

Alternate Methos: (More Dificult)

Remove a jumper: There's a jumper on your motherboard that you'll need to identify and remove. Most motherboards make your job easier by actually labeling the correct jumper as "BIOS config" or something similar. (it looks like a small plastic thingy on 2 pins with 1 pin beside it, within a 1" of the battery). If you're having trouble looking for it, look in the motherboard manual. After you have found it, carefuly pull straight up on it, and place it on the 2-3 pins(it was on the 1-2 pins). With the battery removed and the jumper moved, turn the computer on, and check to see if you can get into the bios. If you are able to, turn the computer off, put the jumper back on pins 1-2, and put the battery back in. Lastly put the case together and you are done.

Note: Don't forget to configure the BIOS (if you know how) after this process.
