We get that the word itself is kind of daunting and long, leaving the impression that it would take expert-level artistry and years of experience to master. But fear not! Because this shade matching trend is taking the world by storm and all you need is a few signature products!

So, what exactly is it?

Monochromatic make-up is the simple art of using all the colours of a single hue, matching the shade of your eyeshadow with your lipstick and even your blush. This trending technique has been around since the 1950s, offering an easy yet effective look that works for all skin tones and ages. It’s a current hit with A-list celebrities, with the likes of Margot Robbie, Emma Roberts and Rihanna embracing it often.

When perfecting the look, imagine that each of your facial features is a big copycat – your eyes should mimic your lips and your cheeks should mimic your lips. Get playful with the shade you are using and try using different textures like creams, liquids, gels, glosses and powders to mix up your monochromatic look!

Choosing Your Shade

In choosing your shade that you will use for this look, always pick a colour that flatters your skin tone and features! Test and try out different shades to find the one that you love the most, but as a general rule of thumb try the below match-ups;

• Blue Eyes work best with warm colours, so try shades with orange undertones and rich browns or shimmery gold and bronzes.
• Green Eyes are best complimented by shades in the pink and purple family, with rusty bronze and mahogany’s adding shimmer.
• If you have Brown Eyes, go with beautiful rich neutral shades and;
• Hazel Eyes can use a versatile mix of shades for the previously mentioned green and brown eyes.

If you want a more natural look, try more neutral shades…think tans and peach hues and on the flip side if you are feeling brilliant and bold, test out some crazy bright colours!

How to Create a Monochromatic Look

Let’s step through how to master your Youngblood monochromatic makeup look, using neutral and bronze shades as an example;

1. Apply your primer & foundation
2. On your eyes, apply our Sundance Mineral Radiance as a colour wash all over the eye from the lash line to the socket with a Shadow Brush. The Sundance multi-dimensional bronzer contains four shades that offer a gorgeously soft, peachy glow – pick any of the four colours that make your eyes pop the most!
3. Stick with your Sundance Mineral Radiance for your eyeliner too, just simply use a *wet Line Perfecting or Pencil Brush and you are good to go. Alternatively, you can use a dark brown pencil or shadow along the top lash line.
4. Guess what product we are using for the cheeks as well? Yep, that’s right…your versatile  Sundance Mineral Radiance Bronzer – Try and use the same colour on your cheeks as you used on your eyes so it’s a true monochromatic look. First and foremost, know where to place your blush. If you apply it too high you’ll distort your cheeks and the look will be less cute and more clownish. Looking directly in the mirror at your pupil, imagine a line coming straight down underneath it – then smile. This is the centre of the apple on your cheek and is where you want to be applying your blush.

1. Where to apply blush

Pink or anything reddish in colour should be placed on the apple of the cheek to give you a youthful flush that mimics the effect of blood coming to the skin’s surface. Corals, peaches or anything with orange tones should be applied to the highest point of the cheekbone on an angle to create a ‘rising heat’ effect. We love the Youngblood Mineral Pressed Blush in ‘Blossom’ for a pinky tone and the Youngblood Mineral Crushed Blush in ‘Coral Reef’ for a pop of orange.

2. The ‘inner glow’ effect

To begin, we love to use our cream Illuminator with Diamond Powder all over the face. A recent Environmental Working Group (EWG) report found that each day women use an average of 12 cosmetic products totalling around 168 ingredients, while men use an average of 6 products totalling 85 ingredients. These figures are startling, because most of us are unfamiliar with what these ingredients are and the potential ill-effects they can have on our bodies.

When it comes to ingredients, less is best, which is why Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics avoid unnecessary chemicals that put your skin and body at risk.

Not all makeup brands are created equal though, so here’s a list of ingredients you may find in your makeup bag that are best avoided.

Parabens

Most widely used as preservatives in cosmetics, parabens have no trouble penetrating your skin and have been detected in human breast cancer tissue. In the body they can mimic estrogen and interfere with your reproductive, nervous and immune systems—all things we’d like to keep in well-working order!

What to look for on the label: Butylparaben, ethylparaben, methylparaben, propylparaben, isopropylparaben, isobutylparaben, and any ingredients ending in “paraben”.

Heavy metals

Ever wondered where the music genre got its name? Well, now you know! Heavy metals like mercury, lead, cadmium, chromium, manganese, arsenic and aluminum are found in many different beauty products, particularly coloured make up products like lipsticks, blushes and eyeshadows. Their effects on the body range from issues such as chronic fatigue, digestive discomfort and brain fog to immunity problems, headaches, achy joints and rashes, so give these nasties a wide berth!

What to look for on the label: Chromium, lead acetate, hydrogenated cotton seed oil, thimerosal, sodium hexametaphosphate. Please note that heavy metals can be difficult to avoid as they are not always listed on the label.

Octinoxate

Found in foundations, lipsticks, sunscreens and nail polish, octinoxate (also called octyl methoxycinnamate or OMC), is an unstable chemical that’s absorbed rapidly through skin. A known endocrine disruptor that mimics estrogen and can disrupt thyroid function, it’s been detected in human urine, blood and breast milk – indicating that humans are systemically exposed to this compound.

What to look for on the label: 2-ethylhexyl p-methoxycinnamate , omethoxycinnamate (OMC), escalol , parsol, parsol MOX, parsol MCX.

Carbon black

A dark black powder used as a pigment in eyeliner, mascara and lipstick, carbon black is produced by the incomplete combustion of carbon-based products such as coal tar, and has been linked to increased incidence of cancer and organ toxicity. An ingredient found in eyeliners, it’s linked to cancer and organ toxicity.

What to look for on the label: Acetylene black, carbon black, channel black, D & C black no. 2, lamp black, thermal black and furnace black.

Siloxanes

Synthetically manufactured chemical compounds used in cosmetics to soften, smooth, and moisten, siloxanes disrupt the endocrine system and are toxic to the reproductive system.

What to look for on the label: Ingredients that end in “-siloxane” or “-methicone”.

BHA/BHT

Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are chemical compounds that are used as preservatives and antioxidants in lipsticks, sunscreens and moisturizes are have been linked to several health concerns including endocrine disruption, organ-system toxicity and cancer.

What to look for on the label: BHA, BHT.

Petrolatum

A byproduct of petroleum refining, petrolatum (or petroleum jelly) is often used in personal care products as a moisturising agent. When properly refined, petrolatum has no known health concerns but unrefined or ill-refined petrolatum may be contaminated with with toxic chemicals called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that are linked to cancer, allergies and skin irritation, so it’s best avoided altogether.

What to look for on the label: Petrolatum, petroleum jelly, mineral oil, paraffin oil, and white petrolatum.

Mineral oils

Mineral oils are derived from petroleum and are mainly used in cosmetics as preservatives and lubricating agents that help retain moisture. Because mineral oils are petroleum derived they may be contaminated with cancer-causing PAHs and long term use of can suffocate the layers of the skin, leading to inefficient cell turnover rates and signs of premature ageing.

What to look for on the label: Baby oil, paraffin oil, liquid paraffin, white oil, paraffinum liquidum, and liquid petroleum.

Why does it matter?

What we put onto our skin is absorbed into our body and bloodstream, and wearing makeup that contains the ingredients listed above gives chemicals and toxins permission to penetrate your skin and potentially cause a range of health issues, from the annoying (allergic reactions) to the life-threatening (cancer).

First and foremost, always opt for mineral makeup as the natural minerals are less likely to irritate sensitive, rosacea-prone skin than chemical-laden makeup.

1. Skincare comes first

Before applying your makeup it’s vital to have a clean base, so make sure you gently cleanse and lightly moisturise with targeted rosacea products. Always remember to repeat this cleansing step once you‘ve removed your makeup for the day, and follow with a rich moisturizer that will rehydrate your skin overnight.

2. Prime your face

After moisturizing with a lightweight product we recommend applying Youngblood’s CC Perfecting Primer to reduce redness and blur any ruddiness or uneven skin tone you may have.

3. Ace your base

Once your primer has set, apply Youngblood’s Liquid Mineral Foundation or Loose Mineral Foundation.

Take care when applying liquid foundation, and gently press and pat the formula onto your skin to avoid irritating your skin and increasing redness. We recommend using a beauty blender or our Liquid Foundation Brush to achieve an even and natural finish whilst stopping any redness peeking through.

If applying powder foundation, very gently buff and sweep a Kabuki Brush across the surface of your skin, using the base of the brush over large areas (cheeks and forehead) and the edge for areas around the nose and eyes.

4. Go easy on the blush

Since those with rosacea are generally trying to cover up facial redness it’s very important that you don’t overdo it with blush. Opt for our Pressed Mineral Blush and lightly sweep over the apple of the cheeks towards the temple. Remember, less is more!

5. Gentle Eye makeup

Because rosacea sufferers often have sensitive skin, it’s important to use eye makeup that’s easy to remove and won’t cause irritation from hard scrubbing.
