To bring in 2008 I decided there was some changes that are needed to be done to the website. These changes will mainly help new comers to the website navigate it easier. The website has got much larger then I ever expected it to get. I enjoy seeing many people are visiting the website and I hope that you are learning new things from the content. I will be changing the feeds for both the podcasts and I will have those available soon. I just want to say again thank you for all your emails and viewing all the videos that you do. I will have a blog coming out soon with the date of the new site launch.

I know I haven't payed much attention to my podcasting side of this site. It is one of my goals for this site to add more content here.

Zune: Is now for podcasts

I know that I have not paid much attention to my podcasting section of the website. That might change shortly. Here you can see a Microsoft Zune 4/8 GB model. Look nice? Look closer. At the bottom of the screen you can see half written the word "Podcast". Finally Microsoft is getting into Podcasting, but is their timing right? I'm hearing the phase "podcasting is dead, podcasting is dying." From my experiences I have work at a studio recording and editing podcasts for the last two years. This year no one has resigned their contracts. I feel that podcasting has taken a step back, but don't all new technologies? Lets take a look back to 1997. Everyone was starting successful home and online businesses and then one by one they started to close down. There are still lots of people working in online and home business, but there had to be a learning curve before it became a real success. Podcasting is now growing up, it is now moving past its developmental stage and becoming a real online tool. There is allot of resources and directories to help podcasting now move forward. I personally do not believe it will be the Zune the will resuscitate the podcast trends but it is a breath of fresh air. The two things every podcaster can do to keep podcasting alive is consistency and quality of content and product. If there is one single thing that can change the tide for podcasting is a subscribe system for Windows users. Most people listen to podcasts from their computer desk top. Window users need an easy way to subscribe to podcasts and consume them from their desk top. Lets see what the future has in store.

I just finished my last podcast titled "Chain of Events." In this podcast you will learn about the process your voice goes though before it is uploaded as a podcast. This episode mainly covers all the recording equipment you will need to process a podcast. Click here to listen.
I also plan on purchasing some mp3 players for the website, this means you will be able to listen to these shows while still surfing through the website. This will be in the next week or so.
What do you want to learn about? Is there any questions about recording, audio, podcasting that you have? When I first developed this website, I thought that the podcasting side would receive the most attention. But in fact it is quite the opposite, everyday I seem to be spending my free time writing to people interested in the recording artist section of the website. Now that apple TV is here, there is no doubt in my mind that there will be similar products to follow. Soon everyone will be able to play your podcast from their stereo. I was listening to a podcast today, the host was recording it while driving in traffic and did it ever sound bad. The bass boosters in the stereo only enhanced the background traffic.

New software for Windows

Steinberg has announced a new DAW that I believe window based podcasters should be excited about. I do not know the exact release date, but the price is very competitive. This program has a very similar look and feel with Apple Garage Band. There will be more blogs written about this exciting new program as the release date comes near. EQ. One important step

Here's a quick tip to improve your sound quality in your podcast. If you have a EQ plugin on your podcast, try to roll off all sounds below 80Hz on all tracks. There are 3 main reasons you will want to do this.

- Only high end speakers and headphones can accurately reproduce low end sounds.
- It helps cut out any ambient sounds in the room. (Fans, Traffic, Air Conditioners)
- It will make low bit rates podcasts sound better. (Example 96k)

Pop Filter

The pop filter is a very important device that helps improve the sound quality of your podcast. It helps prevent your microphone from "popping." This is caused when you say words with the letter "P" in them. When you say a word like podcast, your mouth makes a small wind while forming the "P" sound. The popfilter takes away some of the intensity from the word, and smoothes out the sound wave. Because of this you can now record your podcast a little bit louder. Pop filters usually cost about $20 - $50.

Microphones. Which one is best for you?

If you are looking for a microphone for your podcast you mainly have 4 different types of options.

1. Dynamic:
Pros.
-Plug this microphone directly in and start recording.
-Small pickup pattern. (Will only pickup sound within 2-5 feet of it.)
- Can travel, be dropped and still work well
Cons.
- Produces a very thin sound unless plugged into a preamp

2. Condenser
Pros
-Best sounding
Cons
- Needs a preamp to function
- Will pickup any ambiance sounds
- Very delicate
- You need a pop Filter

3. USB (A light version of the Condenser)
Pros
- Cheap
- Designed for podcasting
Cons
- Thin Sound with out processing

4. Head Sets
Pros
- Quick setup time
- USB or Analog outputs
- Can read you computer screen easily
Cons
- Many version are too cheap sounding
- Quality versions are pretty expensive

All of these microphones can be bought between $25 - $300. I use the Condenser right now, but am shopping for a headset. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Podcasting, getting Started with it.

There are three steps involved in setting up your computer to get podcasts.

1. Get Podcast software

You need to install a piece of software that will search the web to find podcasts and automatically deliver them to your computer. This software is usually free, and these three are popular with most users ( iTunes, Juice, Doppler ).

2. Subscribe to podcasts

Once you have the software installed you need to subscribe to a podcast. How you do this will depend on which software you have chosen. If you have iTunes, for example, you can subscribe to podcasts through the iTunes Podcast Directory.

3. Listen to the audio

When a new episode becomes available, your software will automatically download it. You can then listen to this episode on your computer or transfer it to your portable player to listen to later. You may want to check the settings of your podcast software for details including how often it will check for new episodes, whether it will keep old episodes for you . This will vary depending on the software you have chosen, and your personal preferences.
