Racism in America

Yesterday, a show was canceled because a cast member sent out a racist rant on a fellow human being. Racism in American society is something that will never ever disappear. Though African Americans aren't the only ones who have to face racism on a daily basis, they are the ones that experience it the most. As I make plans to travel this summer, I am a bit fearful about places where it will or won't be safe to visit because of my color. America was supposed to be a melting pot of culture where anyone who came could live the American dream. Well, what is the American dream? Is it to come to a place and be discriminated against and constantly treated unfairly because of misconceptions that others may have about your particular race?
I am an American citizen and I shouldn't have to be afraid of traveling across America to visit other states. The fact is, I have to be afraid, I have to remain vigilant and I can't let my guard down or I could run the risk of becoming a statistic. I don't want someone to say that I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Well, tell me... where is the right place and when is the right time? I could ask questions all day but I would never be able to come up with answers that would make sense. This life is so short... too short to be hating others, judging others and wanting to hurt others.
It's important for people to understand that not all African Americans are like the ones that they see in the movies committing crimes or even the ones that they see on the news. Every race has people that commit crimes and has movies where they are portrayed as being criminals.
Many black men have become so hostile to other races as a defense mechanism. As African Americans as a whole, we don't have to wonder if because we already know that racism will happen. There's quiet racism and then there's the "in your face and bold racism". So we always have to mentally prepare ourselves for a constructive way to handle these situations. It can be hard and not everyone feels like dealing with racism everyday therefor reverse racism happens.
Getting to know people helps to change minds and attitudes. I can't speak for the whole African American race but I will say this because this is for every human being, no one wants to be mistreated for no reason, no one wants to be judged and assumed guilty because of something that someone else did and no one wants to wake up every day to others turning up their nose and give hateful looks.
There will come a time when the situation will boil over and people could actually get hurt on all sides. This is crazy and childish. We're not kids anymore. As Americans, we need to grow up and realize that we all hold value. Think about when you were born... did you care about who was in the incubator next to you? Or when you die...will it matter who's in the grave next to you? Please stop waking up with hate in your heart, please stop overreacting when you see a black person moving into your neighborhood or a black person being hired on at a facility where you work. When a person has worked hard and paid their dues, they shouldn't have to wake up to a cross burning in their yard or hateful words sprayed on their church. I want to encourage love, mutual respect, and understanding. There is a reason why America is the way that it is but it's not clear if we will ever know or understand that reason. Let's just move forward and succeed together. Join hands, not break spirits and hearts.

A Love of Nature

I have been in love with nature for as long as I can remember. Summer vacations in Wisconsin gave me the opportunities to really be one on one with nature through camping, hiking, horseback riding and swimming. As time passed, I allowed the obligations and responsibilities of everyday life distract my love of nature but I found that it was hard to feel that same sense of freedom and tranquility when I lost touch with the great outdoors.
A few years back, I found nature again through visiting national wildlife refuges speckled around my home state. Refuges such as Morgan and Mathew Brake, give visitors the opportunity to safely enjoy nature once again. Visitors can breath fresh air and listen to the sounds and view nature as well as read all about the animals that frequent the location as well as live there permanently.
Four years ago, I decided to start saving injured turtles. If I saw one in or on the side of the road, the would carefully retrieve it and get it to safety. In the beginning, I really enjoyed treating these animals then letting them go. After doing it so often, I found myself developing an attachment. I cut box turtle was crossing a busy backroad and I pulled over. This was a place where young kids loved to drag race and ride four-wheelers. It was a big risk but saved the turtle. Before I knew it, I had four box turtles, two females and two males. Ever since then, I've been caring for my babies and the eggs that they have laid. I know there are some that believe that I should have returned them to the wild, but I just couldn't I love all the things that nature has to offer and it feels good to have a part of it here in my home.

We've all heard of the so-called rules of attraction but something is telling me that it may be a load of wash. If a person sits back and really thinks about attraction, romance, and love; a different picture comes to mind, A whole new thought process takes place. I now believe that anyone can fall in love. What I mean by this is a straight person can fall in love with a gay person, a gay person can fall in love with a straight person, people of different faith and religions can fall in love, even different races. We've all witnessed these types of things happening. Given the right set of circumstances, you could find yourself in love with the type of person that you never thought you'd be with, in a billion years. We have these ideas of who we want to lay next to at night or for the rest of our lives but the person you or I may be dreaming of, might not be the person for us. Have you ever watched a movie where two absolutely straight people start feeling attraction to each other because of a single moment? It would seem that it's not that they're gay, they have just fallen in love with that particular person of the same sex and they say things like: "if it's not that person, I wouldn't do it" or "I just want him by my side always". A racist person could find themselves in love with a member of a race that they've hated all their lives. A businesswoman can fall in love with one of the most dangerous criminals in the world and not even be remotely afraid of him. I guess what I'm trying to say here is the next time you see someone on the street, in the store, at church or across the hall, don't think about the things that you don't find appealing about a person, try to look for something that makes you take a second glance. Maybe he or she has a great smile but terrible skin. Maybe he or she a little loud but have the most beautiful eyes or hair. Maybe he or she is too thin or too thick but they dress as well as a model. Let's just forget about the rules of attraction because they simply aren't real or they aren't fair. Maybe you have someone that you like and you're afraid that it might not work out because you two are as different as different as night and day. I say go for it because there's always the time when night and day meet. I may be a hopeless romantic but I know how it feels to love outside the box!

A Husband's Suffering
Up until a few days ago, I thought that I knew everything there was to know about love, particularly, about my love life. As it turns out, I couldn't have been more wrong. I think that we as human beings have plenty of notions about how other people should live their lives but we seem to have blinders on when it comes to living our own lives. My life has been in shambles for years and I didn't even have a clue. Here I was just living and then my husband wanted to have a candid conversation with me. Needless to say, I came out on the other side of this conversation with a new insight on myself.
Freddrick and I have known each other since December 2014. We dated for a few months and decided to get married. Everything seemed to be going just as planned but there was something that I didn't notice about my own behavior. I was carrying baggage from my last relationship and it had been this way from the start of our relationship. Thinking that somehow all of this would change, my now husband, decided to just let it go for then but as he so boldly stated last night, "You've been punishing me for what that guy did to you." I was shocked. I'm thinking that this guy has gone nuts.
He broke down everything. You know how it is when you start a new relationship or even start dating someone new, questions like "Why are you single?" or "What happened with your ex?" come up. Well, Freddrick and I talked a lot about our past relationships. When I say a lot, I really mean it. We talked for hours on end. It seemed to bring us closer to getting hurt feelings and experiences off our cheats. It was invigorating, to say the least.

My Ex
I'll call him Mathew for the article's sake. This man was the center of my universe. We had been planning a life together for years. But things just always got in the way. When we first got together, I honestly didn't like him that much. I looked at him and decided that if he wasn't someone that I couldn't imagine kissing, then I couldn't be with him. But as time went on, he grew on me and I fell in love with him. This was one relationship that I put my all into. I was a tech specialist and making a lot of money. He didn't have a permanent job. Basically, he had been a long time employee of a temp agency. He worked every day but he hadn't been hired on by any company permanently. He was making an okay living. Basically, I was making more money and I wasn't the type to clinch on to every dime. When we started dating, he insisted on paying for everything. That was fine with me for a while but I started to feel guilty. I knew that he was sort of living paycheck to paycheck, so I offered to start helping out with our expenses. This was something that would come back to haunt me. As we got closer, we started spending more time together and planning long lazy weekends. I have to admit, life was good. But something was brewing under the surface.
He had a child from a previous marriage and he was obsessed with her.I don't think obsessed is a strong enough word but I'll stick with it. It's a blessing to have children for anyone. But there is such a thing as crossing the line between loving your child in a parental way to a romantic way. I won't go any further into that. I'll leave that for another installment but I witnessed things that I shouldn't have. Even years later, I know that I could have done something but I didn't.
We decided that we would take turns paying for things during our weekends. I would pay for food then he would pay for our room or vice versa. This went well for a few months but I started to notice a pattern. If it was my turn to pay for the room, he would want to stay at the most expensive places and he would insist on staying for a three-night weekend. But when it was his turn to pay for the room, he would always pick out cheap places and we'd sometimes only stay one night. The same would happen would it came to him paying for food. Everything was becoming very one-sided. When holidays came up, he would pick fights with me and we would end up apart. When birthdays would come around I would always get him nice gifts but he would act strangely and want to take a little time apart. Conveniently, he'd want to get back together a week or two after my birthday and Valentine's day, which only happen to be three days apart. So much happened with this man until I just couldn't take it anymore. We'd break up and get back together and the whole cycle would start over. I gave my heart and soul to this man, but I would never have a special place in his heart. All the planning that we'd done was just wishful thinking and a waste of time. Never did I think that the relationship would change me into a person that I would no longer recognize when I looked in the mirror.

Self-Reflection
I became selfish and suspicious of others. I was no longer giving and free-hearted. I always had the fear that I would be used and abused by someone else. After finally leaving Mathew, I tried to date again but I just couldn't. Everyone reminded me of him in different ways. Someone would talk like him, walk like him, act like him or even look like him and I would exit at stage left. I just wasn't having it. I wasn't wealing to yield to anything or anyone until I met Freddrick, No matter what I threw his way, he never gave up on me. He loved me no matter what. But now, I had become the Mathew in our relationship. I was treating Freddrick the way that Mathew had treated me and I didn't realize it. I think it had become something normal to me. But I was wrong on so many levels.
Today and here on after, I'll try to remember who I was before that evil person came into my life. I try to be a better person and a better wife. My eyes are open and I realize the error of my ways. Sometimes, we hurt the ones we love most without even knowing it. I don't want to live like that anymore. I encourage you to look at your own behavior. Are you having problems in your relationship? Is the problem you or your mate? Baggage from the past has a way of taking up residence in the present. Take a look in the mirror. Have a candid conversation with your loved one. Don't let a good relationship go down the drain because of something that burned you in your past. Ask yourself this: Have the wounds healed or are they still featuring and infected?

I broke one of the best phones that I ever had which was my Blu Studio (R) 6.0 HD. I loved that phone. I was a great size and it never let me down. Unfortunately a hectic day at work caused me to become a bit reckless. I left my phone within some files. I thoughtlessly picked the files up to carry them to my file cabinet and that's when my world crumbled, literally. My phone hit the floor at an angle then fell flat on its face. I held my breath as I had watched the whole thing play out. The screen cracked, never to be used again.
A week later, I was at Walmart looking for a new phone. I wanted something around the same size as the phone I had but I couldn't find any with my current carrier. I had heard a few people talking about a company called Straight Talk Wireless (R) so I decided to take a gamble. I saw several phones that interested me but only one was the size of my previous phone and that one was the ZTE Maz Duo Lte. I purchased the phone and went home to set it up.
I had the option to get a new number or keep my old number. It took some time to get this right because I had to input old account info and such but within a few hours, I was using the phone. It was nice. I rather enjoyed the fact that all my apps automatically started downloading to the phone. With the new case that I purchased for the phone, no one had a clue that I was using a new phone. My old phone appeared to look new because I always take care of my devices.
A month after purchasing the phone, I was playing one of my favorite games. All of a sudden the screen started blinking then went out. It was a disaster. Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Class

There are a lot of people that decide to change careers for any amount of reasons but for me, it was something that I had been debating about for quite some time. I have always loved working with children and helping them as much as I could but when a job goes beyond what you can offer, it may be time to think about doing something different. If you're not filling fulfilled about a job like you used to, perhaps you should rethink things as I did.

I did some research about some of the classes and opportunities that were floating around my area, I came across plenty of information about Certified Nursing Assistants. It seemed as if these professionals were in high demand everywhere. I decided to look at the career outlook and path of CNAs. It wasn't glamorous but then again, what job is? I found out that classes were being offered at a community college nearby. I talked to my husband and we both agreed that it was something that I should consider.

I ended up signing up for the class to see if it would work out. If you're wondering the cost, well it wasn't that steep. The class was only $400 but the other fees such as testing, equipment, books, etc takes that amount to a grand total of $710 and that's not bad at all.

Orientation for the class was very nice. I had the chance to meet everyone that would be in the class as well as find out what I would learn and what would be expected of me. I have to admit that it was kind of exciting. The classes were schedule to be tween six to eight weeks and during the course of that time, we would have to master all of the skills as well as cover all of the information required to pass the course.

I completed the course and received my certification along with my classmates. A month after that, I took the state required test for licensing. I now have my license and I am about to start my new job within the medical field.

I have no regrets about leaving my previous job. I think that it was something that I had to do for myself and my sanity. In the weeks to come, I plan on starting nursing school. I feel like I have a new flame inside me and the sky is the limit!

So here I am.... 35 years old and finally getting ready to take the plunge. I feel like I'm in my early twenties and starting college... those were the days!!!! I don't know what lies ahead but I have made a promise to myself to be a better person. I know that in marriage, there is no "I", "You" or "Me". There is only "Us" or "We". I won't go into the statistics on marriage and divorce. I refuse to go into this thing and thinking about how it will end. Perhaps it will be a forever type thing. I'm sure that my parents thought and felt the same things that Darius and I are feeling. Sadly though, they got divorced my sophomore year in college. Still, I won't let my faith be shaken. I'm marrying a loving, kind and understanding man. He's the type of man that a woman like me needs. I'm always busy... always on the go but I have to agree that the thought of having someone to come home to really excites me. More than anything, I want kids. Please God give me a set of healthy twins! Please forgive me if every now and then, I write something mushy, cute, wild or unnerving. I've never been into wearing my heart or feelings on my sleeve but the prospect of a happily ever after will change even the most independent woman. I've decided to dash aside my pride and become that blushing bride.

The Era of the Gentleman (Part Two)

One can not choose a time or a place where a man makes the conscious decision to stop taking a woman's feelings and/or safety into consideration. I think that it starts with the way that the said man was raised. What kind of life did he lead? How did his parents treat him? How did his father treat his mother? How did his mother treat him? How did she conduct herself? There are so many things to take into consideration when trying to solve something so mysterious. Ultimately, I believe that it goes back to the way his father treated his mother and sisters. Typically, if a child witnesses the correct way to love, respect and cherish his mother and sisters, he will generally carry that knowledge on into adulthood. The opposite is also true. If a child, be it male or female, caries childhood experiences into adulthood.
PRIME EXAMPLE:
*Johnny was three years old when he started to notice his mother crying after being locked away in the room with his father. This was something that he didn't understand but it made him sad whenever he saw his mother in tears. As the years went on, Johnny noticed that that his mother was crying more, his parents were no longer arguing in hushed tones. Johnny could hear them arguing about everything such as money, paying bills and accusations from his mother that his father was cheating. When Johnny was fifteen, he witnessed his father hit his mother and knock her to the floor. His father left his mother lying there, grabbed his car keys and left the house. Johnny helped his mother to her feet. He grabbed tissue from the bathroom to dry her eyes. Several times after that incident, Johnny asked his mother why she let his dad treat her that way. She'd told him that his father was going through something but he loved both of them very much. Johnny didn't know how mistreating a person could mean love. Over the next few years, Johnny witnesses more and more violent incidents. He tried stepping in several times, but each time, his mother and father ended up upset with him. His father would threatened to hit him. His mother would jump in the way and beg and plead with the man to not touch their baby. Johnny couldn't believe what was playing out before his eyes. Later, his mother would yell at him about provoking his father and claimed that Johnny was only causing more stress for his father. Johnny could understand why she was making up excuses for the beatings that she received from his father. After this, Johnny could barely look at his mother. He wandered why she would put aside her self respect and simply allow his father, a man he had no more love for, treat her like trash. Why she had allowed herself to become a punching bag was beyond Johnny. He wished that his parents would just sit down and talk about their problems instead of fighting all the time. When Johnny turned eighteen, he moved out of his parent's home. Two years later, he was in college and having problems with his girlfriend. They were sitting in his car and he found himself so angry at her words that he hit her. The both of them were shocked at his actions. His girlfriend left him after that. She'd said that she refused to be with a man that handled his problems with a fist. Johnny had two options: get help for his anger issues or continue down the same destructive path like his father before him. Johnny watched her wipe away her tears as she walked back to her dorm. He thought about his mother and how she had taken beatings from his father for more years than he cared to remember. Sure, Rachel had been good to him but at the end of the day, in his mind, b!t%*$ came a dime a dozen. If she couldn't handle the man that he was, then f%^k her.
I'm not saying that Johnny's experiences are typical. It's only an example. But if a child grows up in violence than he has only two choices. He could become a product of that violence or rise above it all. In the beginning, Johnny was confused about the relationship between his parents, after that, he wanted to protect his mother from the violence. In the end, because his mother let her child witness her constant sacrifice of her self-worth, her son went on to think of women as nothing more than a ship passing in the night, as they come and go.

The Era of the Gentleman has Ended (Part One)

The Era of the Gentleman has officially ended and chivalry is dead. The men in today's society no longer value women as their predecessors did. It's a strange and hurtful thing to say but it's true. Here is a prime example: The Elusive Dating Site. A man generally joins a dating site for "friendship then maybe more". Women are more upfront about their reasons for joining the site and what they want. They take their time filling out the profile information and even completing the compatibility questions. I'm not saying that there aren't men that are just as meticulous but they aren't usually on dating sites. When the man and the woman come across each other's profile and decide to chat, they eventually exchange phone numbers. They may talk and text for a week or two then decide that they want to meet. Out of nowhere, the man will suggests that the woman should come to him. This is interesting because usually, during "courtship" a man is courting a woman, comes to her home and meets her relatives then awaits approval from the family. I understand that times have changed but men have made a complete 360. Back to the example... the woman asks the man why he can't come to her and he gives her a long list of excuses. The woman then decides that he's not someone that she wants in her life. She heads back to the site only to experience the same situation over and over again. She comes across one man that is willing to come to her or at least meet her, but he confronts her, asking if they have dinner and see a movie, if he has to pay for everything. The woman is shocked and decides to leave this particular dating site. After joining another dating site, she finds that the men there are no different. She decides that online dating isn't for her.
Example Two: The same woman decides to frequent places that she knows that single men frequent (grocery stories, laundromats, libraries, sporting events and parties). She meets a man at the laundromat and they hit it off. After a few weeks, things are going well. Suddenly, the man starts asking her for money, gifts and help on his bills. She decides to help him because thinks that this is only a one-time thing. Before she knows it, he's given up him home and moved in with her. She's essentially working to take care of him. How could men have changed so much in such a short period of time? What would cause a man to give up his manhood and let a woman take the reigns?
