Mercury Thermometer and Spygmomanometer are need to be banned

The Department of Health (DOH) may recommend to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) the banning on the importation of mercury-containing products in the Philippines.

In a telephone interview, Health Secretary Esperanza Cabral reiterated that mercury is highly toxic so the use of any product containing the substance should be prohibited.

“I think products like fluorescent lamps have mercury. We will propose to the DENR that these products be banned. We will see,” she said.

Mercury is a potent neurotoxin that can affect the kidney and the nervous, digestive, respiratory and immune systems.

In 2008, the DOH issued Administrative Order (AO) No. 21 imposing the “gradual phaseout of mercury in all Philippine health care facilities and institutions.”

The AO is in line with the stand of the World Health Organization in 1991 that a “safe level of mercury exposure, below which no adverse effect,” has never been established.

Cabral reminded all hospitals, infirmary, lying-in clinics and other health facilities that they have until December this year to comply with the phaseout.

“The DOH has not been registering thermometer and blood pressure apparatus with mercury (because of that AO). We want to remind health care facilities that they have until this year to switch to alternative devices,” she said.

The two medical devices that contain mercury are thermometers and sphygmomanometers used to take the blood pressure of a person.

The non-governmental organization Health Care Without-Southeast Asia, which has been advocating for the ban, gave assurance that digital alternatives for these devices are easily available and affordable.

By next year, Cabral said there should be no mercury devices in the Philippines so health care facilities should have already started phasing them out.

Mayweather raises doping issue vs Mosley, Pacquiao

MANILA, Philippines – Undefeated American fighter Floyd Mayweather, Jr. has not yet put an end to his doping allegation against 7-division world champion Manny Pacquiao, even mentioning it during the press conference of his May 1 fight against compatriot Shane Mosley.

Mayweather even brought up Mosley’s doping history during the press conference held at the Nokia Theatre in Times Square, New York City.

“I can't say how many fights Shane has won in the past because we know Shane was using enhancement drugs. That's something we do know,” he said as quoted by the Associated Press.

Although Mosley did not react to Mayweather's statement, the boxers still had a minor scuffle during the press conference which prompted their team members to intervene.

Mosley admitted to taking steroids “unknowingly” in 2003 after being forced by a former strength and conditioning coach to do so as part of his training.

“It's no different than Pacquiao. I offered Pacquiao the fight. I said, ‘We'll give you $25 million.’ I never met a man who wouldn't take a $25 million drug test,” continued Mayweather.

He was slated to fight Pacquiao on March 13 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada but negotiations crumbled because they disagreed on the drug testing protocol.

Pacquiao even sued Mayweather and some of his team members for alleging that he was taking performance-enhancing drugs. The Filipino boxing superstar chose to fight Ghanaian Joshua Clottey on March 13 at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Mosley, on the other hand, was supposed to face Andre Berto in January but the Haitian’s family was affected by the devastating earthquake in the Caribbean nation.

Mayweather and Mosley have agreed to undergo random blood testing to ensure fairness ahead of their bout dubbed “Who R U Picking?”

Unknown outcome

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer explained the title of the May 1 pay-per-view event.

“The theme of this fight is ‘who are you picking?’ because when two champions of this caliber meet in the ring, you can expect nothing but an extremely competitive fight and an unknown outcome that will only reveal itself on May 1,” Schaefer said in a statement posted on PhilBoxing.com.

“Shane Mosley is one of the greatest fighters of this era and so is Floyd Mayweather, so it is a true gift that the fans will have the opportunity to see a fiercely competitive and fantastic night of boxing,” he added.

Mayweather has a 40-0 (with 25 knockouts) record while reigning World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight super champion Mosley has 46 wins (with 39 KOs) and 5 losses.

The undefeated American said of his foe: “Not only does he have the skills, but he is also fast, strong and a very tough competitor. His speed and power won't mean much that night against my will and determination to dominate him inside the square circle. When I compete against the best, I am always at my best; so on May 1 the fans will see one great performance.”

Mosley, for his part, noted that his dream of fighting Mayweather is finally coming true.

“Floyd is excellent at what he does, but my past record of beating the best competition and other great champions shows that he is just another one of my opponents I intend to beat. He has never faced anyone like me before and I think that will be a big factor on May 1 when I plan to show him just what it means to meet a true champion in the ring.”

TheSweetScience.com also reported that Schaefer predicted that the Mayweather-Mosley bout would generate 3 million buys. This is higher than the 2.7 million PPV buys record held by the 2007 fight between Mayweather and Oscar de la Hoya.

Chile Earthquake

A massive earthquake struck off the coast of Chile on Saturday, causing at least 700 deaths in the coastal South American nation and prompting a tsunami warning for 53 countries along the Pacific Rim.

With more than 700 people believed dead and the toll expected to rise, Chilean rescue workers struggled to save people trapped by Saturday's massive earthquake -- including dozens believed to be inside a collapsed apartment block in the city of Concepcion.
Left without water and electricity, looting begins in Chile.

The 8.8-magnitude earthquake was one of the most intense ever measured, and has prompted Chilean President Michelle Bachelet to declare a "state of catastrophe" in central Chile. More than half a million homes were destroyed in an event scientists said was 500 times stronger than the earthquake in Haiti.

Bachelet, who leaves office on March 11, sent the army to help police confront looting in the quake zone today, The Associated Press reported, sharply boosted estimates of injuries and said she'd likely appeal for international aid.

"We are facing a catastrophe of such magnitude that has caused damages that will require gigantic efforts from every sector of our country -- both private and public sector," Bachelet told the media today, according to an ABC News translation. "We face an emergency without precedent in the history of Chile, in which we need fast and urgent answers.

November 2009 Nursing Licensure Examination Result

The result of the Philippine (NLE) Nursing Licensure (Board) Examination, which was held in Manila & all Regional Offices on November 29 & 30, 2009 has been released by the PRC.

A total of 37, 527 out of 94,462 (39.73%) nursing graduates passed the November, 2009 licensure examination.

The examination was given by the Board of Nursing in the cities of Manila, Baguio, Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, La Union, Legazpi, Lucena, Pagadian, Pampanga, Sulu, Tacloban, Tuguegarao and Zamboanga last November 2009.

The oathtaking ceremony of the successful examinees in the said examination in Manila as well as the previous ones who have not taken their Oath of Professional will be held before the Board on Monday and Tuesday, March 8 and 9, 2010, with morning (8:00 A.M.) and afternoon (1:00 P.M.) sessions at the SMX Convention Center, SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City. All must come in their white gala uniform, nurse’s cap, white duty shoes, without earrings, hair not touching the collar and without corsage.

The Professional Regulation Commission reminded those who will register are required to bring the following: duly accomplished Oath Form or Panunumpa ng Propesyonal, current Community Tax Certificate (cedula), 2 pieces passport size picture (colored with white background and complete name tag), 1 piece 1” x 1” picture (colored with white background and complete name tag), 2 sets of metered documentary stamps, and 1 short brown envelope with name and profession; and to pay the Initial Registration Fee of P600 and Annual Registration Fee of P450 for 2010-2013. Successful examinees should personally register and sign in the Roster of Registered Professionals.

Oathtaking tickets for the National Capital Region (NCR) and nearby regions will be available at the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) at 1663 F.T. Benitez Street, Malate, Manila, starting Monday, February 8, 2010 on a “first come first serve” basis.

Beware of skin-care products with these harmful chemicals

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN ONE OF THE most popular ingredients for skincare turns out to be one of the most damaging for your skin?

While I still disagree that white skin means beauty, uneven patches on any skintone are a valid concern for most women.

So, in the interest of wellness and beauty, here are tips on what to avoid when buying skin care products.

Hydroquinone

The first on my list is hydroquinone (HQ). Nothing can be worst on your skin. Lately, it has been quite alarming that more and more products containing HQ are finding their way to the ever growing skincare market.

Hyperpigmentation occurs when there is an overproduction of melanin on the skin. Freckles, dark patches, age spots and the like are all considered imperfections.

HQ is applied topically on the skin to decrease melanin production. The result is lighter skin.

Simple enough, but as with any drug that works miracles, there are side effects manufacturers do not tell you about.

Dermatologist Coco Tiongson, from the Aesthetic Science Center on Jupiter Steet, Makati, says HQ is a very effective whitening or bleaching agent. But if it is used in high concentrations for long period, it may lead to “ochronosis.” This is pigment deposit in cartilaginous areas such as the ears and nose.

Ochronosis is “irreversible.”

The Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS) has warned against the dangers of HQ. Consumers must examine product labels which contain the inaccurate concentrations of HQ and worst, the disguising of HQ by using “1,4-benzenediol and p-diphenol”; both are also HQ.

Tiongson says HQ can be used safely under the supervision of a qualified dermatologist.

He adds that the drug should be used only in small concentrations.

The PDS states that one should use products with only 2-4 percent HQ, but it is better to consult your dermatologist.

The PDS even says that the use of HQ may lead to cancer, while its immediate side effects are not only skin discoloration but also disfiguration and loss of elasticity.

Worst yet, HQ also causes “fish odor syndrome.” Who would want that?

Products containing HQ have already been banned in the European Union, Japan and Australia.

Steroids

Dr. Tiongson also warns against the use of topical steroids.

“Steroids can cause serious damage if the incorrect potency is used on an improperly matched body area,” the dermatologist says.

One should be very cautious when putting pharmaceutical products on skin, Tiongson adds.

Salicylic acid

Who would have thought that something so common as salicylic acid could cause harm on your skin. Again, in small dosages it is fine, but avoid the temptation of using large concentrations of salicylic acid on skin.

Salicylic acid is also known as BHA or beta hydroxy acid. It is a common anti-acne ingredient. It is also used to treat dandruff, psoriasis and warts. But wrong concentrations applied over time can be hazardous.

It is so important to read the label and go beyond the print ad or claims made by drug companies when choosing chemical products for your skin.

Of course, it can be argued that herbs and organic products also have side effects, and this is true. Which is why the moral of the story is that one should always consult a professional when using even over-the-counter products.

Victor Torrizo and his children Allen Vincent, 6 and Viccina, 10 and Badette Villagracia and her 1-year old son Art Raymond Villagracia arrived via Philippine Airlines flight 103 at 5:30 a.m.

Enrico Fos, executive director of the Office of Undersecretary for Migrants and Workers Affairs, said the flight of 12 other Filipinos has been cancelled due to a misunderstanding between the Dominican Republic and the domestic airlines.

He said 64 OFWs have applied for repatriation.

Six Filipinos on Friday recounted their harrowing ordeal in Haiti where a 7.0-magnitude earthquake flattened the capital of Port-au-Prince and brought the tiny, conflict-ridden Caribbean nation to its knees.

The first batch of Filipino survivors, who had found prosperous work in Haiti despite its poverty, completed their long journey home early Friday, traveling by way of Los Angeles.

The Runaways two favorite crowd members Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, has now made by Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning into a BIOGRAPHY FILM. Michael defeats Gabriel and heads back to Heaven with him, leaving Jeep to protect Charlie and the baby who will grow up to lead humanity out of the darkness of the Apocalypse that has occurred.

Your gift to the American Red Cross will support emergency relief and recovery efforts to help those people affected by the earthquake in Haiti. British people wishing to help the victims of the Haiti earthquake are being advised by the UK government to donate money to the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal.
