There is often a debate in terms of which is better PPC or SEO. When it comes to traffic, they can be quite different in the results that they bring.

First of all PPC can be expensive and not necessarily profitable, however the fact that your ads come up instantly and allow you to get instant visitors and measure conversions is just unbeatable.

With search engine optimization on the other hand, it is great to get free traffic. But the thing with free traffic is that it doesn’t necessarily convert into money and it can take a while until you get your desired positions. Usually I am contacted by site owners who tell me that they rank for something in the first position on google, but get no sales.

If I was to start an online marketing campaign, I would definitely start with PPC (Google Adwords) in order to see what kind of keywords convert and then proceed with SEO and other ways of driving traffic on the data tested via PPC.

Question: I am creating an ebook and I am trying to decide how much money and effort to put into the interior design of the book. I see some down side to too much design inside, since some people will really want just the content and words, but is this the wrong way to go? How important is interior design to a good quality ebook? Does anyone know how often people print ebooks to read vs reading them off the screen? I think this is also an important factor to consider, since more design and white space makes it harder to print, or at least it makes more pages. Any guidance here would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Answer:The main value of the ebook is in the content. If you are running on low budget I wouldnt worry about the design so much. You can always add it at a later stage once the book starts selling.

Most of the books in fact I see as being pretty basic, however when the buying audience is likely to print it out, you have to consider the look of it when its printed.

Find a niched topic

Test this topic

Put together website and content based on the response from your test.

Setup your traffic

Monitor and fine tune

This is the process that Andrew and Daryl Grant follow in their [tag]ebook site[/tag] model. I only specialize in their [tag]ebook web design[/tag].

Testing the topic requires putting together a [tag]survey site[/tag], which I also develop. Its a pretty simple one page site which captures people’s name, email and comments. Based on the response, the [tag]ebook[/tag] site is built.

This is the most efficient to build an ebook website, since you know exactly what people are after. If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments of this post.

If you would like to become an expert in search engine optimization, you will need to understand couple of things. First of all, you will need to undestand factors within the website that affect it’s rankings. Its normally things like [tag]meta[/tag] and [tag]title tags[/tag], H1 and [tag]H2 headings[/tag], keyword density and linking structure (follow/nofollow). Secondly, you will need to understand how incoming links affect work, where they should come from and where they should point to.

So, if you can do this well, then there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to [tag]optimize a website[/tag] and make it better than it currently is. The biggest problem that usually happens is that when someone wants to rank for a very [tag]competitive keywords[/tag] and wants results asap. In that case its virtually impossible to do [tag]SEO[/tag] as it might take a while.

What I currently specialize in is [tag]SEO Expert[/tag] services for local businesses. This way [tag]local business[/tag]es wouldnt have to pay so much for their ads. Website’s presence in the search engines is currently more powerful than [tag]yellow pages[/tag] ads which cost a lot more then my [tag]SEO services[/tag].

First of all, the hosting has to be [tag]PHP[/tag] based hosting which is normally called Linux hosting. Not everyone understands this, but Windows hosting does not support PHP and [tag]mySQL[/tag] by detault.

It makes it a lot easier, if you host your [tag]wordpress[/tag] blog on a hosting with [tag]cPanel[/tag]. CPanel allow you to install and update blogs very easy using their Fantastico feature.

You will find it very complicated installing wordpress without [tag]Fantastico[/tag], unless you are comfortable setting up MySQL databases.

I personally use Hostgator to host all my websites and wordpress blogs. However there are many other cPanel based hosting providers such as BlueHost and Hostmonster

This is a very common questions that I get asked.

Would you recommend using Wordpress or Blogger for a blog? Which is better? Why?

Well, first of all it really depends what you are trying to achieve. If you are just trying to run an online diary for yourself, either one is good, however if you are pursuing specific goal, then I would recommend you one of them.

For example, if you are trying to get a blog to rank in the search engines, get many readers and make money online I would definitely recommend [tag]Wordpress[/tag]. Wordpress has [tag]SEO[/tag] ready structure and allows you to insert various plugins that can help you rank in the search engines and make your blog function the way you want it. On the other hand, [tag]Blogger[/tag] is much simpler platform and is not so flexible, however easy to deal with.

In terms of ranking on [tag]search engines[/tag], you can really get both platforms to work, its all mainly to do with incoming links. The [tag]social bookmarking[/tag] plugins in wordpress automate the process of getting backlinks to your posts/pages which really makes big difference.

I must warn you however, wordpress requires a lot of customization in order for it to work efficiently. If you are not familiar with [tag]web design[/tag] and [tag]CSS[/tag] I would recommend you getting someone setting wordpress for you.

It is important to have an optin box on your website. The main reason for having an optin box is to build a list of clients. Most people however just build a list of clients and do not do anything with them. This concept is called list going cold, which simply means that those people will be highly unlikely to respond to any of your emails.

The key to [tag]building a list[/tag] is quite simple. First of all, you are trying to gain your list’s trust by giving some advice or providing something free that can be useful to the [tag]subscriber[/tag]. This can go on for a week or two. During this period you will see if anyone unsubscribes from your list (basically means they are not interested) and you will end up with a list of people who are keen on the topic of your emails. This would be the moment when you can start offering products to them.

The best way to offer products to people would be via product reviews. This way you are not selling anything to them, but showing comparisons between different products which usually has a pretty good impact. Just think about what your subscribers are searching for and do the searching for them, add your affiliate links and your review will succeed.

The software that I personally use is called Aweber and it costs USD$19.95 per month. It allows you to build lists as well as setup followup autoresponders and do broadcast emails. [tag]Aweber[/tag] has also recently intergrated with [tag]Twitter[/tag] and [tag]RSS[/tag] (your blog’s) which does miracles. If you havent tried it yet, I strongly recommend you trying it by using the [tag]FREE test drive[/tag] offer they have at the bottom of their main page.

I personally love the followup emails. You get to setup the whole lot of emails straight away and set intervals between those emails. Once you have done this, you can forget about it.

Popular alternatives to aweber are – getresponse, 1shoppingcart and email brain.

Well, throughout my experience I have found that the easiest way to make some money is with using [tag]Wordpress[/tag] Blogs and monetizing via [tag]AdSense[/tag]. You will not be making millions, but a few dollars a day will bring a smile to a face of someone who just tried to [tag]make money online[/tag].

There are many ways to make money at home, however online marketing seems to be the way to go.

You dont necessary need to be doing everything for yourself as t here are websites where people offer their professional services. Those websites are the ones like rentacoder.com and elance.com. Or you can be offering your own services through those websites as there is quite a bit of work being offered there that you might be an expert in.

I, however prefer to use blogs to [tag]make money at home[/tag].

To see how I [tag]monetize blogs[/tag] see previous post.

There are number of ways to make money from your wordpress blog. The most profitable way to monetize is from affiliate marketing, however there are also publisher ads, banner ads and link selling that can earn you money.

With affiliate marketing, there are number of ways you can promote products. The key is to have products being relevant to what your blog/forum is about. The most effective is writing product reviews and mentioning products in posts. The best places to find affiliate products in my opinion are Commission Junction and Clickbank. [tag]Clickbank[/tag] in particular gives you a “[tag]marketplace[/tag]”, which shows you all the products that you can promote with stats of how much you will earn from sale and how many people have sold a particular product in a period of time (gravity).

Publisher ads (eg. Google AdSense) are usually the backend of pay per click services like [tag]Google Adwords[/tag] can be a good way to monetize blog/forum, however you really need quite a lot of visitors and a good click through rate (number of times ads are clicked) to [tag]monetize[/tag]. The key is to have the ads positioned properly and have rich text content. It’s the content that triggers specific ads by the words that make up that text.

[tag]Banner ads[/tag] are good alternative to [tag]AdSense[/tag], however it is a little hard to monitor them. There are wordpress plugins which allow you to rent spaces on your blog (paid services), however alternatively you can manually monitor the banners.

[tag]Selling links[/tag] is a good way to make money if your blog has a good “[tag]page rank[/tag]” and has reasonable amount of visitors on your website. Good page rank (PR) is anything above 3 and reasonable number of visitors on your website is about 150-200 people per day. The best system that I found to sell links is called Text Link Ads which gives you a wordpress plugin which is simple to install. I have 2 blogs with PR3 and PR2 which make me about USD$100 per month.

There are many other ways to monetize your blog/forum, however in my experience reselling other people’s products via affiliate links is the most profitable way. Some of the websites at Clickbank give you all the banners and promotional text, which is very easy to apply.

Finally, it is vital to have an optin box on your blog/forum, so that people can sign up for your newsletter or updates. This is a really powerful tool that you can use for affiliate marketing. I will let you know more about it in my next post.

Here is another good article on monetizing your blog, but its a little out of date

One of the common mistakes in web design that I often notice is “Untitled Document” in the title tag. People simply forget to change it or pay no attention to it. It looks quite silly when a unprofessionally designed website has pages titles “[tag]Untitled Document[/tag]“.

First of all, title tag in HTML is probably the most important tag. The reason for it being is that the keywords in the title tag play a vital role for onsite [tag]search engine optimization[/tag]. Secondly, when your web pages get indexed by the search engines, the listing in the search engines will appear with your title tag in its own title.

Ideally your [tag]title tag[/tag] should contact 3-5 keywords that you are trying to optimize for. I normally use “-” sign to separate them and this worked quite well for my sites so far for the [tag]SEO[/tag].

So if you have BlogRush plugin on your website, please remove it.

In order not to rewrite what has been said by [tag]blogrush[/tag], here is their email about shutting down of they service:

” Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

To: All BlogRush Users

After careful consideration, we have decided to shutdown the BlogRush service. If you have the widget code on your blog you will need to remove it.

When BlogRush launched in late-2007 it spread like wildfire all over the Web. Thousands of bloggers were talking about it and the service exploded to become one of the fastest growing free services in the history of the Web. During the first year of the service it successfully served 3.4 Billion blog post headlines and the BlogRush widget could be found on blogs all over the world; even up until the moment we closed down the service.

BlogRush didn’t grow without its fair share of problems — from security issues to abusive users trying to ‘game’ the system to much lower click-rates than expected. We also had some problems with trying to fairly control the quality of the network, and in the process made many mistakes in deciding what blogs should stay or go. All of these issues, ultimately, limited the service’s full potential.

Our team worked very hard to try and build a service that would truly help bloggers of all sizes get free traffic to their blogs. This was our primary focus. Not once did we ever try to monetize the service with ads or anything else. BlogRush never made a single penny in revenue. We wanted to be able to help our users FIRST and then worry about monetizing the service later.

Unfortunately, the service didn’t work out like we had hoped. (It happens.)

I want to say “Thank You” to all of the great bloggers that at least gave BlogRush a test to see if it would work for them. We sincerely appreciate you giving the service a try.We have received several offers & inquiries about acquiring BlogRush, but we are choosing not to go that route. While many might think this is crazy, we truly feel it’s the ‘right’ thing to do for our users. Believe it or not, it’s not always about the money. In fact, BlogRush will have lost a small fortune when it’s all said and done, and it was by choice.

There were many things we could have done to monetize the service but we wanted to make sure it was going to benefit our users first.

Last but not least I want to say that I hope the failure of this service doesn’t in any way discourage other entrepreneurs from coming up with crazy ideas at 4AM (like I did with this one) and from “going for it” to just try and see if something will work.

Without trying there can be no success. And as we all know, ideas are worthless without action. The Web wouldn’t be what it is today without entrepreneurs trying all sorts of crazy ideas.

On behalf of the entire BlogRush team, we wish the best of luck to everyone with their own blogs, ideas, and crazy ventures.

Sincerely,

John Reese

With cost per click increasing for Google AdWords, quite a few people have stopped doing affiliate marketing using their pay per click service.

I’ve decided to investigate this and created my own google adwords campaign for one product on [tag]Clickbank[/tag].

Here is a screenshot of my earnings for the last couple of weeks

I basically picked a product which had a [tag]commission[/tag] of at least $30 and promoted via a blog which was specifically setup for the product. My average conversion rate was around 1% which happened to be profitable. I used search and content network in order to [tag]drive traffic[/tag] to the site. My [tag]ad groups[/tag] were all setup to fit particular keywords, so were the ads inside them.

So, its still definitely possible to make money with affiliate marketing using [tag]adwords[/tag]. I am currently documenting the process into an ebook and it will be out soon.

I do quite a lot of ebook web design and have been looking for a solution for getting higher quality score for the website. It looks like wordpress blog is the answer.

I have bought a new domain name and setup a blog with information regarding my product, then posted a sales letter with order buttons and started marketing to this post via [tag]Google AdWords[/tag].

I am currently paying $0.10 [tag]per click[/tag] on search network and $0.04 per click on content network. The [tag]quality score[/tag] is 7/10 and 8/10 for most of the keywords. Also most of the keywords also have “Great” quality score, whereas before they were only “OK”.

So this seems to avoid [tag]Google Slap[/tag] and provide awesome quality score.

I am eager to hear your comments on this technique.

Question: Do you recommend using search or content advertising? Do you think that content advertising is a waste of time?

When running an [tag]AdWords[/tag] campaign [tag]search network[/tag] should definitely be turned on. The main reason for it is that it is much more targeted then [tag]content network[/tag]. The downside however is that it costs more.

When it comes to search network, I would not recommend it unless your product is at least $30 in price as it has a very low conversion rate. The rule of thumb is to have content bids enabled at low price. I have mine at about $0.04 per click. This way you are going to get about 1% percent [tag]conversion rate[/tag], whereas search network can be between 1% and 5%.
