It's a travesty, defying basic principles of justice and due process in perhaps the most extreme respect our nation has ever seen. Thankfully, several lawmakers are keeping up the fight. Senator Dianne Feinstein has introduced legislation to undo these provisions of the NDAA, in the form of the Due Process Guarantee Act. We need to urge other Senators to support it. Across my <br />Administration, openly LGBT employees are serving at every level. <br />Thanks to those who came before us -- the brave men and women who <br />marched, stood up to injustice, and brought change through acts of <br />compassion or defiance -- we have made enormous progress and continue <br />to strive for a more perfect union. <p /> My Administration has advanced our journey by signing into law the <br />Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr., Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which <br />strengthens Federal protections against crimes based on gender <br />identity or sexual orientation. We renewed the Ryan White CARE Act, <br />which provides life-saving medical services and support to Americans <br />living with HIV/AIDS, and finally eliminated the HIV entry ban. I also <br />signed a Presidential Memorandum directing hospitals receiving <br />Medicare and Medicaid funds to give LGBT patients the compassion and <br />security they deserve in their time of need, including the ability to <br />choose someone other than an immediate family member to visit them and <br />make medical decisions. <p /> In other areas, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) <br />announced a series of proposals to ensure core housing programs are <br />open to everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. <br />HUD also announced the first-ever national study of discrimination <br />against members of the LGBT community in the rental and sale of <br />housing. Additionally, the Department of Health and Human Services has <br />created a National Resource Center for LGBT Elders. <p /> Much work remains to fulfill our Nation's promise of equal justice <br />under law for LGBT Americans. That is why we must give committed gay <br />couples the same rights and responsibilities afforded to any married <br />couple, and repeal the Defense of Marriage Act. We must protect the <br />rights of LGBT families by securing their adoption rights, ending <br />employment discrimination against LGBT Americans, and ensuring Federal <br />employees receive equal benefits. We must create safer schools so all <br />our children may learn in a supportive environment. I am also <br />committed to ending "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" so patriotic LGBT <br />Americans can serve openly in our military, and I am working with the <br />Congress and our military leadership to accomplish that goal. <p /> As we honor the LGBT Americans who have given so much to our Nation, <br />let us remember that if one of us is unable to realize full equality, <br />we all fall short of our founding principles. They're happy <br />to report that more than 3,000 others joined you in taking action; <br />however, those signature made no impact on ExxonMobil. <p /> On Wednesday, Dallas GetEQUAL activists gathered outside the annual <br />ExxonMobil shareholders meeting to ensure that shareholders put a face <br />to their discriminatory policy. While they were kept outside by <br />police, Richard Miller of the Dallas Peace Center delivered those <br />3,000+ signatures to shareholders at the meeting. Without your help, <br />they would not have been able to show ExxonMobil how many people <br />around the country care about this issue! <p /> Despite those signatures, ExxonMobil shareholders voted down a change <br />to their employment policy, showing all of us why it's important for <br />the grassroots to keep pushing corporations to do the right thing. <br />GetEQUAL will continue to fight for workplaces free of discrimination, <br />at ExxonMobil and elsewhere. Tanner Effinger (15-30 minutes) <p /> Tanner, who's on the interim board of EAA, will explain how EAA was <br />founded and what it's vision and purpose is.  After speaking for 5-15 <br />minutes, he'll answer some clarifying questions from the room for <br />another 15 minutes. <p /> Topic:  "What do we mean by Full Federal Equality?  What would it look <br />like?"  Jose Medina (60 minutes) <p /> Jose will lead us into this discussion, speaking for 5-15 minutes on <br />the various ways in which LGBT people do not have full federal <br />equality & protections.  The purpose of the discussion is to clarify <br />what we envision when we say we want "Full Federal Equality." <p /> Topic:  "Strategies, Tactics, and Building a Network."  Michael <br />Anderson (60 minutes) <p /> Michael will lead us into this talk, which is intended to bring the <br />history of the tactics that have won civil rights for people (black <br />civil rights, women's sufferage, the labor movement, etc) and how we <br />can learn from their examples. <p /> Planning an Action for Harvey Milk Day in San Diego.  Zakiya Khabir (60 minutes) <p /> The purpose of this discussion is to decide together, in the meeting, <br />on an effective action for Federal Equality for Harvey Milk Day, May <br />22nd, which will be a National Day of Action for Federal Equality by <br />EAA Chapters across the country. <p /> Closing Comments by Tanner Effinger (5 minutes) <p /> Tanner will explain how anyone can become a F.E.A.T. (Federal Equality <br />Action Team) with Equality Across America <p /> Equality Across America formed following the National Equality March <br />in October 2009, in which 200,000 people descended on Washington, DC <br />from every corner of the country with scarcely any help from the <br />established Gay-Rights groups. Fed up with the decades-old failed <br />strategy of lobbying "friendly" politicians and high-dollar, <br />politically cowardly campaigns that still fail to beat back right-wing <br />assaults, activists today must demand what is right-full equality in <br />every state, city and town-and build a fighting organization that can <br />win. This meeting is a response to the call to unite the post-Prop 8 <br />generation of activists in the first-ever grassroots, independent and <br />nation-wide LGBT federation in US history. We concluded that, morally and <br />strategically, the best way to fight against marriage discrimination <br />was to return to the ballot as soon as possible. It was the true will <br />of the people. These meetings gave birth to Restore Equality 2010. <p /> In the past five months, the campaign has done more than any other <br />organization in California to change hearts and minds to support <br />marriage equality. They talked to hundreds of thousands of <br />Californians and confronted nearly a million more with the fact that <br />many in California do not have equal rights under the law. <p /> However, Restore Equality 2010 did not collect the necessary <br />signatures to qualify for the November 2010 ballot, but still wanted <br />to reassure you that they are not going to stop fighting. <p /> While they never envisioned that they would have to make it happen <br />without the help of existing LGBT rights and marriage equality <br />organizations, that was the way it turned out. Emboldened by the words <br />of MLK, "The time is always right to do right," Restore Equality 2010 <br />helped develop great ballot language, organized a democratically <br />elected campaign structure that reached across the state, and in <br />November 2009 embarked on the formidable task of qualifying the <br />initiative to restore equal marriage rights. <p /> Along with the federal case against Prop 8, they kept marriage <br />inequality in the public eye and helped expose the unfounded rationale <br />that confused California voters into enacting it. When a recent Public <br />Policy Institute of California poll showed a nearly 9 percent switch <br />in public opinion, it proved the work we were doing was having a <br />positive impact. Now more than ever, we are confident that repealing <br />Prop 8 at the earliest opportunity is an imperative to promote all <br />forms of equality. <p /> Supporters kept the struggle for marriage equality alive and have <br />helped build a powerful organization. Restore Equality 2010 want to <br />keep you as an ally as they begin planning for a 2012 campaign to <br />repeal Prop 8. They will need to grow in numbers, develop new leaders, <br />and learn from our work this year to restore marriage equality in <br />2012. <p /> Equal marriage rights mean more than dignity in relationships, they <br />mean equal protections for individuals and for families with LGBT <br />parents. The fight means that we as people will not settle for the <br />misnomer "separate but equal." This country was built on the notion of <br />equality.
