Repeal indefinite detention for US citizens

	Friends-

President Obama just signed the National Defense Authorization Act into law despite startling provisions that will allow the military to indefinitely detain American citizens. It's a travesty, defying basic principles of justice and due process in perhaps the most extreme respect our nation has ever seen.

Thankfully, several lawmakers are keeping up the fight. Senator Dianne Feinstein has introduced legislation to undo these provisions of the NDAA, in the form of the Due Process Guarantee Act. We need to urge other Senators to support it. Just click here:

http://act.demandprogress.org/letter/ndaa_reversal/?referring_akid=a4083944.1...

"The Due Process Guarantee Act of 2011 amends the Non-Detention Act of 1971 by providing that a Congressional authorization for the use of military force does not authorize the indefinite detention—without charge or trial—of U.S. citizens who are apprehended domestically."

If there's enough of a public outcry, we have a real chance of making this happen: More than 40 senators voted against the indefinite detention provisions of the NDAA -- and that was before the media and general public caught on to what was happening.

Please urge your Senators to remedy this terrible wrong. Just click here:

http://act.demandprogress.org/letter/ndaa_reversal/?referring_akid=a4083944.1...

Thanks.

EQCA's hard-hitting television ads about Meg Whitman and Steve Cooley
vowing to support Prop. 8 in court have garnered national attention.
Tonight these ads start running on CNN, FOX News and MSNBC in
Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego and Palm Springs.
And a Spanish language version is being released later this week. We
need your help to keep them on the air.
Keep the ads on the air and the pressure on Meg and Steve.
Every dollar you give goes to ensuring that Californians know that Meg
and Steve want to spend millions of your and my tax dollars defending
Prop. 8 in federal court, while allowing vital services like education
and emergency services to suffer from cuts.
If you haven't seen the ads or emailed Meg and Steve, click here:
http://tinyurl.com/2e74ewo
Our state can’t afford to waste taxpayer dollars on defending Prop. 8
in court. Please give today, even if you’ve given before, and sign
our petition to Whitman and Cooley telling them to keep California on
the right side of equality.

Yesterday's victory in DC for GetEQUAL

Yesterday was a real triumph for the LGBTQ movement.

Hundreds of people turned out for "The Big Commit," an effort spearheaded by local DC organizers to fight back against the hatred and fear that the National Organization for Marriage has been spewing all summer. GetEQUAL, along with Kate Clinton, asked you for your sign suggestions, and hosted a sign-making station where your recommendations were brought to life.

See a few of the event pictures here: www.getequal.org/bigcommit

But more important than the signage was the sense of community created at the event. Local organizers were joined by about 500 attendees to recommit ourselves to the fight for full equality. As Mara Kiesling from the National Center for Transgender Equality reminded us, "We know from history that we will always win, but we will have to fight."

Will you join GetEQUAL? Will you join them in countering hate with love? In countering fear with hope? In countering apathy with passion?

GetEQUAL is continuing to build a critical mass of people willing to take bold action for LGBTQ equality. Will you invite your friends to join the GetEQUAL community?

Click here to invite your friends via email, Facebook, or Twitter: www.getequal.org/bigcommit

Thank you so much for your ongoing support. GetEQUAL will soon be asking people to take action in their communities to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" -- as well as ongoing social and cultural organizing -- but they need as many people as possible to join them in that work and to commit to taking bold action.

Ask your friends to join GetEQUAL in the fight for full equality!

Get Out!

It's LGBT Pride month. That makes it the perfect time to talk to
family and friends about why marriage matters to gay and lesbian
couples.
To get you started, Freedom to Marry has created a short video that
touches on important issues like the so-called Defense of Marriage Act
(DOMA) and anti-gay measures like California's Prop 8.
Watch the video, then share it with family and friends:
http://freedomtomarry.org/PrideVideo
Last week, Freedom to Marry members proved their commitment to ending
marriage discrimination. More than 1,000 of you them the Freedom to
Marry Action Survey and provided critical feedback that they're using
to build their campaign to win marriage nationwide. A key part of that
campaign is building majority support for marriage.
You can help. Take a moment to check out their newest video. Then post
it to your Facebook profile, tweet it on Twitter, and email it to
friends.

The White House is pleased to learn of President Bingu wa Mutharika's
pardon of Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza. These individuals
were not criminals and their struggle is not unique. We must all
recommit ourselves to ending the persecution and criminalization of
sexual orientation and gender identity. We hope that President
Mutharika's pardon marks the beginning of a new dialogue which
reflects the country's history of tolerance and a new day for lesbian,
gay, bisexual, and transgender rights in Malawi and around the globe.

"As Americans, it is our birthright that all people are created equal
and deserve the same rights, privileges, and opportunities. Since our
earliest days of independence, our Nation has striven to fulfill that
promise. An important chapter in our great, unfinished story is the
movement for fairness and equality on behalf of the lesbian, gay,
bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. This month, as we
recognize the immeasurable contributions of LGBT Americans, we renew
our commitment to the struggle for equal rights for LGBT Americans and
to ending prejudice and injustice wherever it exists.
LGBT Americans have enriched and strengthened the fabric of our
national life. From business leaders and professors to athletes and
first responders, LGBT individuals have achieved success and
prominence in every discipline. They are our mothers and fathers, our
sons and daughters, and our friends and neighbors. Across my
Administration, openly LGBT employees are serving at every level.
Thanks to those who came before us -- the brave men and women who
marched, stood up to injustice, and brought change through acts of
compassion or defiance -- we have made enormous progress and continue
to strive for a more perfect union.
My Administration has advanced our journey by signing into law the
Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr., Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which
strengthens Federal protections against crimes based on gender
identity or sexual orientation. We renewed the Ryan White CARE Act,
which provides life-saving medical services and support to Americans
living with HIV/AIDS, and finally eliminated the HIV entry ban. I also
signed a Presidential Memorandum directing hospitals receiving
Medicare and Medicaid funds to give LGBT patients the compassion and
security they deserve in their time of need, including the ability to
choose someone other than an immediate family member to visit them and
make medical decisions.
In other areas, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
announced a series of proposals to ensure core housing programs are
open to everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
HUD also announced the first-ever national study of discrimination
against members of the LGBT community in the rental and sale of
housing. Additionally, the Department of Health and Human Services has
created a National Resource Center for LGBT Elders.
Much work remains to fulfill our Nation's promise of equal justice
under law for LGBT Americans. That is why we must give committed gay
couples the same rights and responsibilities afforded to any married
couple, and repeal the Defense of Marriage Act. We must protect the
rights of LGBT families by securing their adoption rights, ending
employment discrimination against LGBT Americans, and ensuring Federal
employees receive equal benefits. We must create safer schools so all
our children may learn in a supportive environment. I am also
committed to ending "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" so patriotic LGBT
Americans can serve openly in our military, and I am working with the
Congress and our military leadership to accomplish that goal.
As we honor the LGBT Americans who have given so much to our Nation,
let us remember that if one of us is unable to realize full equality,
we all fall short of our founding principles. Our Nation draws its
strength from our diversity, with each of us contributing to the
greater whole. By affirming these rights and values, each American
benefits from the further advancement of liberty and justice for all.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of
America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution
and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2010 as
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. I call upon all
Americans to observe this month by fighting prejudice and
discrimination in their own lives and everywhere it exists.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-eighth day
of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand ten, and of the
Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and
thirty-fourth.
BARACK OBAMA

Last week, GetEQUAL asked you to you to join them in demanding that
ExxonMobil reinstate sexual orientation and gender identity in its
nondiscrimination policy after ripping it out in 1999. They're happy
to report that more than 3,000 others joined you in taking action;
however, those signature made no impact on ExxonMobil.
On Wednesday, Dallas GetEQUAL activists gathered outside the annual
ExxonMobil shareholders meeting to ensure that shareholders put a face
to their discriminatory policy. While they were kept outside by
police, Richard Miller of the Dallas Peace Center delivered those
3,000+ signatures to shareholders at the meeting. Without your help,
they would not have been able to show ExxonMobil how many people
around the country care about this issue!
Despite those signatures, ExxonMobil shareholders voted down a change
to their employment policy, showing all of us why it's important for
the grassroots to keep pushing corporations to do the right thing.
GetEQUAL will continue to fight for workplaces free of discrimination,
at ExxonMobil and elsewhere. And they will continue to work toward a
federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) that will end the
need to take action with individual corporations.
NEXT STEPS: If you haven't already, please sign their letter to
Speaker Nancy Pelosi demanding a floor vote for ENDA, so that
corporations like ExxonMobil can no longer legally discriminate.
Get Out, Get Active, GetEQUAL!

Great news for everyone who believes in truth and transparency in
politics. The Mormon front group, the National Organization for
Marriage (NOM) was ordered yet again to turn over the names of its
donors to the Maine election last November. NOM was the biggest
contributor to that campaign by far, giving nearly $2 million to take
away marriage equality. NOM is required under Maine election law to
report the names of everyone who contributed $100 and more, and they
have refused to do. They have not released any donor names.
Fred Karger and Californians Against Hate filled a complaint last
October against NOM with the Maine Ethics Commission, which led to an
ongoing investigation against the Washington, DC based group.
“NOM has refused to comply with state election laws throughout the
country,” said Fred Karger. “They think that they are above the law.
In spite of spending millions of dollars to hide the source of their
funding, they are foiled once again.
“NOM and the Mormon Church are also under investigation in California
(Case # 08-735) from a complaint that we filed after Proposition 8
passed. The Mormon Church appears to have hid the true value of what
it spent in that election. When they get caught, their response is to
sue the states that are investigating them. Fortunately, the courts
will not allow them to break the law.”
Read article, "Judge: Gay Marriage Repeal Funders Should Turn over
Donor Information" here:
http://www.mpbn.net/News/MaineNewsArchive/tabid/181/ctl/ViewItem/mid/3483/Ite...
To read Judge Rich's entire opinion, click here:
http://www.med.uscourts.gov/Opinions/Rich/2010/JHR_05232010_1-09cv538_NOM_v_M...

First-Ever Transgender Advocacy Day Held in Sacramento

Sacramento- Today almost 100 leaders from the transgender community
and their allies gathered at the state Capitol for the first-ever
Transgender Advocacy Day. Presented by Equality California Institute
and the Transgender Law Center, participants met with state
legislators to educate them on the need for good jobs and healthcare
in the transgender community.
“Transgender Californians are twice as likely to earn wages below the
federal poverty line compared to the state’s general population,” said
Equality California executive director Geoff Kors. “We must act
swiftly in order to bring an end to this economic disparity. In
partnership with our state’s leadership, I am confident we can help
ensure equal access to economic opportunities for all Californians.”
Participants also discussed the Data Inclusion Act, an Equality
California-sponsored bill introduced by Assemblymember Ted W. Lieu
(D-Torrance), which is the first bill in the nation that would require
the state to add questions about sexual orientation, gender identity
and domestic partnership status in the voluntary demographic section
of California’s government forms, enabling the state to gather vital
data about the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community’s use
of public services, such as health care, unemployment, the AIDS Drug
Assistance Program and programs for women, infants and children.
“One reason transgender Californians are overlooked in state
programming is that we are not counted in the U.S. Census and other
population surveys,” said Masen Davis, executive director of the
Transgender Law Center. “With the Data Inclusion Act, the state can
ensure that transgender Californians receive the services and support
we need to thrive.”
The Transgender Advocacy Day was preceded by the 5th Annual
Transgender Leadership Summit, Capitol T: Growing a Movement for
Transgender Equality, hosted at the University of California at Davis.
Equality California Institute (EQCAI) educates lesbian, gay, bisexual
and transgender (LGBT) people and the public at large about issues
impacting the LGBT community and our allies. Established in 2000,
EQCAI organizes and empowers individuals, communities and allied
groups to work proactively for fairness, equality and justice.
http://www.eqcai.org
The Transgender Law Center (TLC) is a civil rights organization
advocating for transgender communities. TLC uses direct legal
services, policy advocacy, public education, and movement building to
transform California into a state that recognizes and supports the
needs of transgender people and their families.
http://www.transgenderlawcenter.org

The Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) is still stuck in
committee - which means that lesbians and gays can still be fired in
29 states, and transgender and gender-nonconforming folks can still be
fired in 38 states. GetEQUAL can get ENDA moving in Congress again,
but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi needs to hear from us.
GetEQUAL needs as many people as possible to show up in front of
Speaker Pelosi's San Francisco office tomorrow - will you come? Will
you bring friends, family, and fellow supporters of LGBT equality to
stand with GetEQUAL?
SF Rally for ENDA
Tuesday, May 18
4:30 - 6:30 pm
San Francisco Federal Building
7th & Mission Streets
RSVP on Facebook:
http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/event.php?eid=126250744058118&index=1
If we don't get a vote in the House very soon, we will not have time
to get ENDA passed in the Senate before the mid-term elections. If
this doesn't happen now, it could be years before we have another
chance to enact this most basic civil rights law.
Together, we can push ENDA forward. Will you join GetEQUAL? And if
you're not in the Bay Area, will you please pass this to your friends
who are there?
Get Out, Get Active, GetEQUAL

Logan Jenkins, a San Diego Union-Tribune columnist based in North San Diego County, covered the tight Democratic Congressional primary in California's 50th District today. He profiled the two Democratic candidates in the race competing for a chance to unseat the Republican incumbent, Brian Bilbray: 1) Francine Busby, "the Harold Stassen of the 50th district, a three-time loser in head-to-head races against Republicans," and 2) Tracy Emblem, the fresh new upstart with extensive blue collar support from about 20 labor unions. He posited that the 50th District might change color from red to blue this year.
Task Force and Stonewall Democrats encourage you to seek a job working for your local Congressional representative to help pass ENDA

National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Action Fund and National Stonewall
Democrats have launched an innovative campaign this week asking the
LGBT community to not only call and email Congress again and again in
order to help finally get ENDA passed. They argue that there is one
more thing you can do to convince your members of Congress to pass
ENDA — hand them your résumé!
If you or a friend are LGBT and currently under/unemployed, go to your
member of Congress and ASK for a job! That’s right — because we are in
the final push to get ENDA passed in the House of Representatives,
they are calling on LGBT people to go look for work — at their
representative’s office. They need you to demonstrate to Congress that
you need jobs and are determined to get them, even without the
protections we all deserve. Whether you are a carpenter or a
physicist, a politician or a factory worker, ask Congress for a job
and ask them to end workplace discrimination.
Not really looking for work right now? That’s okay — you can still
make a difference. Email this message to at least 5 friends and tell
them to ask Congress for a job, or pass the word to others. Our
combined actions will make a big impact.
They have a sample cover letter you can deliver with your résumé,
calling on your member of Congress to support your job search by
supporting ENDA. Personalize the cover letter as you see fit, print
out a copy of your résumé and go down to your representative’s office
closest to your home to hand it in. (If you absolutely can’t travel to
your representative’s district office, simply fax or e-mail your cover
letter and résumé.)
Please also send them a copy, so they can deliver it to your senators
and President Obama to demonstrate our community’s urgent and critical
need for employment protections.
For further instructions, your representative’s contact information,
and the sample cover letter click here:
http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=fgLJISNzHjIQK6J&s=hqKPIZNDKcIRI4PFIqF&m=bkLNI...
And please spread the word to your friends, family and neighbors!
Thanks so much for taking action with the Task Force and Stonewall and
thanks for keeping up the good work to help us get ENDA passed!

MILLINGTON, Tenn. (NNS) -- Navy officials announced adherence to
Department of Defense (DoD) "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" law April 20.
The Secretary of Defense revised the rules regarding separations under
the law March 25. NAVADMIN 137/10 summarizes the changes and provides
guidance for processing open and future cases under the new
regulations. The DoD implements the law in two instructions – DoD
Instruction (DODI) 1332.14 for enlisted separations and DODI 1332.30
for officer separations. Changes to both instructions raise the level
of the commander authorized to initiate inquiries and separation
proceedings regarding homosexual conduct, revise what constitutes
"credible information," and specify certain categories of information
that cannot be used for purposes of homosexual conduct.
A member may still be separated if:
• He or she engages in, attempts to engage in, or solicits another to
engage in a homosexual act,
• Makes a statement that he or she is homosexual,
• He or she marries or attempts to marry a person known to be of the
same biological sex.
Read more: http://www.navy.mil/search/display.asp?story_id=52765

I just joined GetEQUAL in demanding the immediate repeal of Don't Ask,
Don't Tell (DADT), the policy that discriminates against lesbian and
gay servicemembers. I support Lt. Dan Choi, Capt. Jim Pietrangelo,
Cpl. Evelyn Thomas, and others who took action at the White House
fence on April 20 to end DADT. Watch this video of the police chasing
reporters away from the White House during the protest, and join us in
demanding that President Obama answer our simple question: "President
Obama, will you repeal DADT in this year's Defense Authorization Bill"
http://GetEQUAL.org/GetDADT
Our hopes swelled when President Obama promised at the State of the
Union to end the policy, but his words mean nothing without action.
And he has an opportunity to take action right now. The Defense
Authorization Bill (DAB) provides funding for all military operations,
and it will soon be up for renewal.
President Obama knows that the DAB provides a way to repeal DADT
immediately. And he knows that repealing the policy quickly and
decisively is the right thing to do for LGBT servicemembers and for
all of the armed forces. But recent reports suggest that the
Administration is trying to delay any law change until December or
even later.
Join us in supporting Lt. Dan Choi, Capt. Jim Pietrangelo, Corp.
Evelyn Thomas, and others in their action at the White House to demand
that DADT be repealed through this year's DAB.
http://GetEQUAL.org/GetDADT

Join the fight for full equality in all 50 states! Come to the
Equality Across America Conference Sunday April 18th at the
San Diego LGBT Community Center (3909 Centre St.) from 11 am to 3 pm!
It's time to end the discrimination in employment, housing,
immigration, the military, and marriage!
Agenda for The Equality Across America Conference April 18th
Introduction. Tanner Effinger (15-30 minutes)
Tanner, who's on the interim board of EAA, will explain how EAA was
founded and what it's vision and purpose is. After speaking for 5-15
minutes, he'll answer some clarifying questions from the room for
another 15 minutes.
Topic: "What do we mean by Full Federal Equality? What would it look
like?" Jose Medina (60 minutes)
Jose will lead us into this discussion, speaking for 5-15 minutes on
the various ways in which LGBT people do not have full federal
equality & protections. The purpose of the discussion is to clarify
what we envision when we say we want "Full Federal Equality."
Topic: "Strategies, Tactics, and Building a Network." Michael
Anderson (60 minutes)
Michael will lead us into this talk, which is intended to bring the
history of the tactics that have won civil rights for people (black
civil rights, women's sufferage, the labor movement, etc) and how we
can learn from their examples.
Planning an Action for Harvey Milk Day in San Diego. Zakiya Khabir (60 minutes)
The purpose of this discussion is to decide together, in the meeting,
on an effective action for Federal Equality for Harvey Milk Day, May
22nd, which will be a National Day of Action for Federal Equality by
EAA Chapters across the country.
Closing Comments by Tanner Effinger (5 minutes)
Tanner will explain how anyone can become a F.E.A.T. (Federal Equality
Action Team) with Equality Across America
Equality Across America formed following the National Equality March
in October 2009, in which 200,000 people descended on Washington, DC
from every corner of the country with scarcely any help from the
established Gay-Rights groups. Fed up with the decades-old failed
strategy of lobbying "friendly" politicians and high-dollar,
politically cowardly campaigns that still fail to beat back right-wing
assaults, activists today must demand what is right-full equality in
every state, city and town-and build a fighting organization that can
win. This meeting is a response to the call to unite the post-Prop 8
generation of activists in the first-ever grassroots, independent and
nation-wide LGBT federation in US history. As a first step, EAA
Regional Conferences are working on coordinated actions all across the
country on Harvey Milk Day. We invite you, your friends, and your
organization to participate, endorse this meeting, build this network,
and plan San Diego's Harvey Milk Day action!
For more information, visit the Facebook event page:
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=372473392620&index=1

Restore Equality 2010 campaign ends, a new 2012 campaign begins

On May 31, July 25, and August 29, activist leaders from around the
state met and shared a common feeling - that repealing Prop 8 in 2010
was the right thing to do. We concluded that, morally and
strategically, the best way to fight against marriage discrimination
was to return to the ballot as soon as possible. It was the true will
of the people. These meetings gave birth to Restore Equality 2010.
In the past five months, the campaign has done more than any other
organization in California to change hearts and minds to support
marriage equality. They talked to hundreds of thousands of
Californians and confronted nearly a million more with the fact that
many in California do not have equal rights under the law.
However, Restore Equality 2010 did not collect the necessary
signatures to qualify for the November 2010 ballot, but still wanted
to reassure you that they are not going to stop fighting.
While they never envisioned that they would have to make it happen
without the help of existing LGBT rights and marriage equality
organizations, that was the way it turned out. Emboldened by the words
of MLK, "The time is always right to do right," Restore Equality 2010
helped develop great ballot language, organized a democratically
elected campaign structure that reached across the state, and in
November 2009 embarked on the formidable task of qualifying the
initiative to restore equal marriage rights.
Along with the federal case against Prop 8, they kept marriage
inequality in the public eye and helped expose the unfounded rationale
that confused California voters into enacting it. When a recent Public
Policy Institute of California poll showed a nearly 9 percent switch
in public opinion, it proved the work we were doing was having a
positive impact. Now more than ever, we are confident that repealing
Prop 8 at the earliest opportunity is an imperative to promote all
forms of equality.
Supporters kept the struggle for marriage equality alive and have
helped build a powerful organization. Restore Equality 2010 want to
keep you as an ally as they begin planning for a 2012 campaign to
repeal Prop 8. They will need to grow in numbers, develop new leaders,
and learn from our work this year to restore marriage equality in
2012.
Equal marriage rights mean more than dignity in relationships, they
mean equal protections for individuals and for families with LGBT
parents. The fight means that we as people will not settle for the
misnomer "separate but equal." This country was built on the notion of
equality. It is our job to continue to expand the vision of "equality
for all" until it includes same marriage rights for all couples.
Please continue to support Restore Equality 2010 as they transition to
the next target of 2012. Continue to encourage your friends to sign up
on our website http://www.restoreequality2010.com and make a donation
to help build a stronger organization. Please let them know if they
can count on you to fill a leadership role in this next campaign, and
please forward your great ideas for restoring equality in California.

Vote to Endorse Tracy Emblem

Vote Now for Tracy Emblem the True Progressive Candidate
We all know in our hearts who the real progressive candidate is --
Tracy Emblem. The other 50th District candidate has lost the general
election three times, and is now attempting to gain the DFA
endorsement as a "progressive" candidate. She is not a Progressive
Democrat who DFA should endorse. In fact, the DFA does not want Blue
Dog or Corporate candidates to represent the party as stated in a
recent email from DFA.
To our fellow democrats who are Busby supporters we say that your
friendship and loyalty to her is admirable, but we all know friends
don't win elections. It is the best qualified candidate who should
move on to defeat Brian Bilbray. Let's all make it happen, and as our
opponet says - "Let's rally the troops."
Why support Tracy Emblem as the Progressive Candidate? Progressive
Democrats of America and Progressive Push - both national progressive
organizations have endorsed Tracy.
Tracy has the support/endorsements of 16 labor unions who represent
hundreds of working families in the 50th District.
This district can only be won by a strong opponent -- Tracy has been a
civil rights attorney protecting and fighting for people's
constitutional rights!
Please Click on the Link Below & Vote for Tracy Emblem
http://www.primariesmatter.com/elections/california
