I Think I Do

Hello my beautiful friends,

I am super thrilled to share this with you, the film I worked on this past year has been released on W Network and Lifetime, it is called "I Think I Do" and it is a wonderful love story written by the talented Jenny Cooper and directed by the super fabulous Dylan Pearce!

Make sure you check your TV and PVR the show so you can watch it with a loved one, it's a lovely way of spending the evening!

Lipstick Personality

Isn't it interesting how differently everyone shapes their lipstick...I am guilty of taking a peek every time someone pulls out their tube!

Mine is Flat Top! and my favorite lipsticks are Make Up For Ever, with NARS gloss on it: toss between "Orgasm" and "Turkish Delight".

Hope everyone had a fantastic beginning to 2013! I started my year with learning the ancient art of Shiatsu Massage, which I apply to scalp massages for my guests at Koko the Salon.

Hollywood showcase for Fashion Week

Hello my gorgeous friends,

I have had quite the crazy Summer, full of fun projects and amazing clients.

Some pretty amazing news just a couple of days ago, I was informed that the make-up I did for the talented stylist and Master colorist Alann Sluser has helped her get to the Hair styling Contessa Award semi finalist in 3 categories! I have my fingers crossed for her win! Pictures are still top secret until the judges release them...stay tuned for a future blog when I will surely post the fabulous images.

Very recently I also showed a hair design collection at Western Canada Fashion week and I was thrilled to win the showcase!

I am planning an amazing show for the Spring/Summer Fashion Week as well, so stay tuned for more pictures!

It's Not Really About the Hair!!

Hello gorgeous,

Oh I had so my fun at the latest hair trade show! I learned a ton, got to model and work for an amazing company called Brocato...and I shopped until I dropped!
I love hair and make-up trade shows, they are one of my favorite perks of my job!
If you have never been to one, it is a great fair for the industry: usually held at a big venue, like an expo center; there are all kinds of vendors and companies doing demos. The shopping is amazing because everything is discounted and show prices, which are almost 1/2 off...chin chin ;)

At past make-up trade shows (IMATS) I had the wonderful opportunity to meet some industry giants like Kevin James Bennett, Eve Pearl, Dana Nye, Steve Johnson and many many more...while at hair shows I got to meet and rub shoulders with some great artist, which brings to my fun question..."guess who I met???"
Well, it was none other than the amazing Tabatha Coffey!!!! She came to the latest hair trade show to talk about her book "It's Not Really About the Hair" and then proceeded to meet her fans and sign books.
Her book is amazing, not for the shy for sure, as it is very colorful, however she brings the point across very directly and clearly. Barely talks about hair, like the title implies, it's more of a memoir into the events that shaped her life and career. I loved the book, it was like having an intimate conversation with Tabatha.
Personally she is a very warm and kind woman, who's not afraid to tell it like it is! My kinda gal...may I add!

Lately I have met way too many posers, wannabes and people on a power trip, who are all talk and no walk...it is so refreshing to meet a woman or B.I.T.C.H. (Brave, Intelligent,Tenacious, Creative and Honest) like she calls herself, who is not scared of hard work and being real! I recommend this book to everyone, it's very empowering! I got my autographed copy that I will treasure for many years.

Perfect Eyebrows

Hello gorgeous,

During my last Make-up class, it occurred to me that many people don't know how important eyebrows are in framing the face and the eyes.
Many people take shaping eyebrows into their own hands and that's when the HORROR begins!!!
I am not kidding, very few people really know how to properly shape their brows, and need serious make-overs.
If you fall in one of these categories, leave your brows alone until they grow back to their original length and shape (I know it's "painful" to go around with un-kept brows, but it's a necessary step to fix the problem). Next, follow the "fix it" steps below.
NOTE: Stop the "bad" shaping as soon as possible; brows are among the few of our body hair than if removed long enough, it will stop growing!
And if you think any of these looks are ok, ask yourself a simple question: "which classy lady, or celebrity or beauty queen have I ever seen with THIS look?"
Trust me, they are not pretty, and if anyone tells you otherwise, they are either lying or trying to sell you the service (like tattoos)!
Remember fashion dictates brow shapes too, the 1970s had super thin brows in fashion, while the 1980s had the Brooke Shield's thick unkempt brows! I suggest you stick with the shape that suits your face the most, or follow fashion without changing your shape permanently.

Let's discuss the first NO-NO in eyebrow shaping:

Shaving eyebrows and drawing them in! The horror!!!

FIX IT: If you are among the fortunate ones who have big bushy eyebrows, figure out your most flattering shape first and draw it on the eyebrows with a white eye pencil; brush hair up (on the first inner half of the brows) and brush down (on the second outer half), then cut (Not shave) the excess length; after, with tweezers (or wax) remove the hair outside the shape you drew. It is important to draw the brow shape first, if we start tweezing without a shape, we risk to take too much off or have un-even eyebrows, making one too thin or too short.

Very small brows or lighter hair brows get Tattooed in! I am a fan of body tattooes but tattooed make-up is just AWFUL!!

FIX IT: Tattooed brows are usually tattooed in black ink, which with time will turn blue! The eyebrows are usually tattooed too strong and too angular...in short, they look like a cartoon drawing and un-natural! Unfortunately if you have already tattooed your brows, since it's a permanent decision, there is not much you can do to remove it! however, going over the shape with a brown eyeshadow and an angle brush, you can soften the look and make it more "natural".
If you haven't tattooed them yet, but want to fix a small or light eyebrow, you can fill it in with eyeshadow powder and achieve your favorite shape. The great thing about filling in eyebrows with make-up is that you can try different shapes or thickness and if you don't like it, you can wash it off!!
Black eyebrows should be colored with a brown eyeshadow and blond eyebrows with a green-grey eyeshadow (Sage or Safari, are some of the common names for these eyeshadows).
If the hair is too light and you want a more semi-permanent solution, you can color your hair with eyebrow dyes, which is a service most aestheticians perform in 10 min. or less!

Tadpole or Comma eyebrows are very common shapes. I find most people with bad brows fall in this category, and it's very common among young people. The problem is that people take too much off the entire length of the eyebrow, leaving a "ball" of hair close to the inner corner of the eyes.

FIX IT: Let your hair grow back first, then with a white eye pencil draw two parallel lines up to the point of the arch, and down towards the temples, slowly tapering into a point. When you are happy with the shape, take off with tweezers or wax strips the excess hair at the top and bottom of the brows. Follow the diagram to figure out where to start the brow, how long it should be and where to place the arch (the highest point of the eyebrow). Remember, if some hair within the desired shape is too long, don't pull it, just brush it up and then cut off the excess.

Another word of caution: when deciding how angled the eyebrows should be, keep in mind your face shape. If you have strong jaw lines and a square face shape, keep the arch low, almost circular (the opposite of your face shape). If the face is round, keep the angle high and more defined. Keep in mind the eye closeness as well. Close set eyes look better with eyebrows that start further apart, while wide set eyes look better with brows who are closer together.

Draw on different shapes before you decide which shape would look better, or visit a high quality aesthetician to help you decide...then keep up the shape.

Please, don't feel insulted by my comments, we have all been there! Eyebrow shapes are the hardest beauty step to figure out at first but make a huge difference in a look...as a matter of fact, go check out "before they were famous" celebrities pictures and the "after" looks, you can tell what a huge impact eyebrows have in their current looks.

My Latest Favorite Product

Hey beautiful girls,
ok I know my blog title gives away what I am going to write about...but lately I have been obsessed with a tremendous product, which surprisingly is available at any Drug store and at a reasonable price. You all have seen Taylor Swift twirl around in the new CoverGirl commercials promoting the new CG line, well let me tell you...Bravo CoverGirl!! The new NatureLuxe line is fantastic!
I am especially obsessed with one of their products: the NatureLuxe Gloss Balm!

Typically, when you hear of a “gloss” or a “balm” we assume it also be synonymous with “colorless”. Even if bright in the tube, once the product makes its way onto the lips, it becomes bland and a great disappointment.

Not so much with these new Gloss Balm sticks from CoverGirl.

Not only is it formulated with all natural ingredients, has SPF 15 and smells wonderful, but the color payoff is extraordinary!

I gave away a whole bunch to my family and friends, used them on photoshoot and for Brides (I let them keep it for make-up retouching), great for teenagers for back to school and for the busy mom on the run...actually, I use mine everyday!!

You need to get one to believe me...you'll quickly become a fan as well!

Beauty Emergencies!!!

As easy as it is making up a beautiful skin or setting perfect hair, we all live in the real world and we all have to deal with beauty emergencies.

I have often been asked how I handle these difficult situations, so here are my little secrets!!

*Beauty Emergency: A giant red zit

How do zits know we have a special occasion coming up...or that oh so exciting date? Unfortunately zits happen! So how do we take care of them?

Fix: it’s important to first minimize the redness of the pimple. I find that an anti-inflammatory eye drop (like "Visine") helps to tame the redness. Then dab on a spot treatment and gently rub it in (if it contains Benzoyl Peroxide, it can zap a zit fast).

Put on your foundation as usual first...don't do it after or you will "disturb" the next make-up step.

To cover up- Use a dab a tiny bit of green concealer on the redness (green neutralizes red); Next, dot a little concealer onto the pimple and pat it with your finger until it sinks in, the trick is to use a concealer the same color as your skin -NOT lighter, or you'll put a big Ol' spotlight on the zit! Do another thin layer if you need to, and then set with powder.

*Beauty Emergency: Creasy eye shadow

You just spent a great deal of time to create a killer smoky eye...you blended and blended (like gurus told you in the youtube video) and then when you go check the mirror in the middle of the night, something has gone terribly wrong!! Prevention is the key in this case!!!

Fix: To avoid a smeary scene next time, prep your lids with foundation and a little powder or use an eye shadow primer. If you create the shadow effect with a creamy product (eye pencils, gel liners, cream shadows), remember you have to SET the makeup with a powder...I usually use the same color eyeshadow powder and it will give it enormous staying powder. Greasy lids can be fixed in a pinch too though, use a blotting sheet or 1 ply of toilet paper to absorb the excess oil, (let it sit on the lid for a few seconds, and remove it) then gently get rid of the crease with your ring finger (always pat, don't smear!!) and add some face powder to re-set.

*Beauty Emergency: Dark circles

Almost every woman I meet complains of dark circles, yes, even models!

The problem could be caused by many factors, lack of sleep, poor circulation, smoking, genetics etc. however the fix is quick and not hard.

Fix: First find a good concealer -make sure it has the same ingredients as your foundation: water based with water based, oil based with oil based etc. or they "won't play nice together!!"

I usually don't go too light...1 to 2 shades lighter then your foundation...figure out if you need a peach based, pink based or yellow based concealer according to the undertones of the skin (look at the skin on the inside of your wrist, and try to find a concealer that has that same natural color and try it under your eyes...if it looks natural, it's a good match!). The biggest mistake most women make is that they cover the WHOLE undereye area....so wrong! Try to dab one or two small dots in the inner part of the eye (the darkest), then with a finger, gently "push" (dab- tap) the color in the skin until it disappears (NEVER rub it across the eye).

The final step is to powder; use a powder specially designed for under eye areas- it's more finely milled than face powder and won't "cake" (Laura Mercier has a killer one!!).

Use a nice bright blush or gloss to take the eyes away from that undereye area.

*Beauty Emergency: No time to wash your hair

So you snoozed more than you expected, and now there is no time to wash and blow dry your hair. No need for hats, hair bands or pony tails!

Fix: Quickly refresh your hair with a dry shampoo. Select one that is accurate for your hair type (moisturizing, excess oil...etc.) Separate your hair in sections, apply the dry cleanser to your roots, massage it in and brush it out. The result, fresh smelling locks.

*Beauty Emergency: You forgot the shaving gel!

It's usually one of the last things I think of when packing my suitcase...or run out of in the middle of the shower, but don't fret, there are substitutes!

Fix: I have many times used the lather effects of my creamy shower gel (I have a creamy/milky kind) and I have also shaved with conditioner. They are both thick and creamy (enough to mimic the texture of shave gel) and will protect your skin against nicks and cuts.

*Beauty Emergency: Hair Frizz

The weather is too blame for this pesky problem...too dry or too humid can cause our lovely hair to misbehave.

Fix: Usually I like to take care (prevent the problem) with Moroccan oil! It's a gods' sent product...I use it everyday and doesn't grease up my hair...plus it smells divine!

Leave-in conditioners are great for frizz problems.

But in a pinch, an easy remedy for frizz is hand lotion (not Vaseline!). Rub a tiny pea-sized amount between the palm of your hands and smooth it to the ends of your hair. Avoid the roots or it will look greasy.

If you have curly hair, scrunch on the lotion then leave the hair alone—finger combing will mess up your ringlets and cause even more frizz.

Beauty Make-up

I had a lot of fun with hair and make-up (I adore creatives), and got a chance to fit Kyla with my "home made" feather lashes ;)

New Projects

Hi fabulous friends,
I apologize for not having had the chance to post in a few months. I have been swamped with work, but that's Spring and Summer season for ya!
I have a new group of students to put through the ringer at the college, they are learning all the basic how-tos of Make-up Artistry. Funny how many some students assume Make-up Artistry would be an easy subject to study, obviously they tend to ignore the fact that Make-up artist have to deal with chemicals in make-up and chemistry and biology of the skin, all done in a sanitary function.
It's more like a nursing course than it is an art project! The artistry of it all of course comes into factor later, as well as the history of the make-up trends and the make-up giants of the past! Then there is the physics and mechanics of the machinery used, and lighting for photography, film and television. Having said all that...it is still a lot of fun!!!
I have also just wrapped up a film, and started a new one! Shooting for the movie industry is very demanding (long long hours and sometimes in extreme weather conditions) but I absolutely love it!!
I've had the chance to head the Make-up department for a fabulous show in the city. It was held to celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of the city's most prestigious club "The Royal Glenora". The organizers set up an amazing Ice skating show "Ice Memories", where an incredible amount of figure skating champions delighted us with 7 Broadway musical on Ice!!
The first was "Cats", followed by "Hook", "Oz", "Vegas Baby", "Starlight Express", "Phantom of the Opera" and finally "Les Miserable"; it was an extraordinary following of talent!
I had the pleasure of applying make-up on many Olympians and the 4 times world champion Kurt Browning. What an amazing experience!
Of course, all this work was wrapped around make-up on the lovely ladies celebrating their graduations and wedding days.

I hope the summer will continue to bring more exciting projects!

Teaching Special Effects (SFX)

There are many reason why I love make-up, mostly though is because it's a form of expression for my art.
Beside Beauty and Fantasy make-up, I have had the privilege to play with air-brushing and the amazing art of Special Effects or commonly known as SFX.
I could not believe how much fun I would have making cuts, bruises and 3rd degree burns...and I hate the sight of blood!!! LOL
Once you get a taste of what is like to make an injury appear realistic, you simply can't stop! Then it becomes even more fun working with Crepe hair, bald caps and prosthetic appliances!
Teaching all of the SFX techniques to my students has also been an incredible journey, imagine getting paid for playing with molding wax, latex and gelatin!
The hardest part is not learning the various construction techniques but painting the piece to look realistic, and for that you need an "artistic eye", something I unfortunately can't teach!
Fortunately, most of my students possess the "eye", so it was a blast to teach them SFX and watch them create the Goriest Zombies and the most Fantastic Creatures (which looked like something right out of a "Narnia" film).
I would encourage all of you make-up lovers to give SFX a try...I never knew how much fun it could be!!

Bridal Magazine Makeup

At the end of the Summer I had been asked by my good friend (from Tru Beauty Services) to do the makeup for the shoot she was styling. Knowing that she does exquisite hair styling, I could not refuse such offer; little did I know that we would have the time of our life at the shoot, where we met so many wonderful people!

I have kept in touch with the photographer, Cindy Gannon (with whom I collaborated again) and the editor of SomethingBlue Bridal magazine, who ended up being a stellar person!

I am over the moon that they chose our pictures for the cover and the editorial, and I am pleased to share this new makeup accomplishment with all of you. Becoming a Makeup Artist

Anyone with a brush set these days calls him/herself a Makeup Artist, but truth is that a Good professional Makeup Artist is hard to find!

Becoming a professional Makeup Artist is not just about applying makeup, and this is not a profession that should be taken lightly. The Beauty Industry is a highly competitive, multi billion dollar industry that requires an enormous amount of dedication in order to achieve any form of success.

There are a few elements to consider in becoming a respected and in demand professional:

First and foremost is talent, skills can be learned but a natural artistic talent is mandatory!

A solid education is also important, whether achieved through school or self taught- a professional Makeup Artist needs to know and follow all aspects of the industry.

Always being on top of trends, techniques and products, by reading industry publications and following pop culture.

Skills must be perfected through a great deal of practice, it takes years to master all the skills of a professional Makeup Artist.

Sanitary practices have to reflect a sterile environment, or you could be liable for spreading an infection or causing terrible reactions- Keep the makeup kit and brushes clean and the tools and hands always disinfected.

Great Attitude is 90% of the Makeup Artist fundamental, it is important to be polite, diplomatic and problem solving, with an attitude of servitude.

Appearance is also really important! The clients need to have a positive first impression, you are a walking advertisement of your work at all times!

Be a great listener, to figure out what the client wants and needs, and at the same time be a good conversationalist- keep the chit chat light and pleasant, no gossip, heavy subjects, inappropriate conversation or colorful language should ever occur with clients or other industry professionals!

Be kind, polite, punctual and prepared and you will be a success!

Hello my dear friends,
just a quick post to say Happy Holidays to you all!!!

I hope 2011 has great adventures for everyone! I just love it when we are about to enter a new year, as I am a person that likes to focus on the future, just the anticipation of what the new year will bring is intoxicating!!!

I have many resolutions, goals and dreams for the New Year.

Make-Up *A Freelance Business

The Make-up course has come to an end, now you are a certified Make-up Artist (MUA), have a basic kit and are super excited to get started...so where to go from here?
I remember how hard it was to get started, especially when I didn't know anyone in the business. Here are a few words of advice on the next step from someone who has "been there, done that."

At the beginning of any Make-up artist career, building a Portfolio is a necessity; there are a lot of photographers and models who are willing to shoot with new make-up artists, and will provide images (most of the time digital photos) in exchange for make-up services.
Model Mayhem is a nice networking website for Beauty professionals, to find people in your area. Try to have a diversified portfolio, some Beauty Make-up, some Fantasy and some Bridal at least (even if not a "real" bride).

Invest in Business cards, most on-line office supply stores will offer a package of 250/500 cards for less than $50.

Be professional, introduce yourself properly, do not lie about your capabilities - always better to underpromise and overdeliver!!

Give out a business card when networking and take the other person's business card (if applicable).
Follow up on encounters with an email and respond to every email promptly.
Volunteer on fashion shows productions and photoshoots, even as an assistant, it's a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Networking is the biggest skill and asset in this business! You are a NOBODY until professionals know you exist!

Look your best at all times, no one will hire someone who looks like hell.

When on a job site, be polite, patient and pleasant. Listen to what the client wants. Never, ever, ever gossip or criticize products or the work of another artist with a client. Keep the conversation light hearted and simple. Talk about them, not just yourself. Compliment the client on one of their features (but be honest), sometimes it's their skin or their eyelashes; just don't overdo it!

Record all the purchases and earnings or designate a bank account for the Make-up jobs, as a freelance make-up artist it is important to declare all your earnings and expenditures.

Another advice is keep learning! Find make-up publications to stay up to date, whether be library books, magazines, websites, youtube videos etc.

Take pictures of every make-up you do (get permission first of course), and double check on a job with people in charge before you publish any image -some magazine shoots, movies and commercials will not allow images getting published before the product or production is released.
Taking pictures on a film set without permission could get you fired on the spot (even if it's of a rainbow in the sky). Before and After pictures are great for the portfolio.

Another great place to get started in a Make-up career is through a Hair Salon. Bring the resume and portfolio (no matter how small) and meet with the owner/manager.

Make-Up Kit * Cosmetics

Now that you have read "Make-up Kit * Brushes", and know which basic tools to purchase, let's talk about Make-up!!!

The Make-up case to choose is only a personal preference, I started with a small metal case, then moved on to a large and now carry a really large case with wheels (it is actually a Scrapbooking case I purchased at a local art supply store, was a fraction of the price of a make-up case and it's fabulous!!!). Regardless of the choice of make-up case, make sure it's always super clean and organized, nothing turns off a client more than a dirty case!

A lot of make-up artist I know swear on Primers, I have used almost all of the popular primers out there, but honestly, I don't find a need for them (at least not for a make-up that doesn't need longevity). It is a good idea to invest in one or two of the best ones to even out really bad complexions. I like to use the Smashbox primers or the Make Up Forever HD primers, the clear and the colored ones. Sometimes a peach colored matte primer is all a model needs!!!
I like the Smashbox primer for lids and lips (dual stick), works great and you have two in one!

Foundation is a product I would never buy cheap! As the base for everything and the first layer of cosmetic to touch the client skin, I want the best of the best!
I have a lot of foundations but always tend to use the Make Up Forever HD foundations. They are a bit of an investment but the super pigmented formulation needs only a few drops for complete coverage. This foundation dries matte, so I often mix it with liquid shimmers to get more of a dewy look.
If less coverage is needed, I go to my trusted tinted moisturizer by Laura Mercier, love love love the oil-free formula!
For my air-brush I like Dinair and Temptu foundations. I was once adviced by a very inexperienced make-up retailer to use regular liquid foundation in my air-brush...what a mistake that was!!
Since these products can be costly, don't go off and buy one in every color; all you need is 4 or 5 of them, ranging from the lightest to the darkest, have a medium one for olive tones (yellow base) and have the darkest be one cool (for blue-black) and one more like chocolate milk for warmer skin tones; spend some time in learning how to mix the foundations to achieve the custom colors. After all these years I still don't buy a foundation line in every color, and I have never encountered a problem!

Concealer and camouflage are a crucial part of the kit as well. If possible buy a palette of concealers (or wheels), which will provide a lot of choices. I like Ben Nye concealer wheel, even though I often use the wheel for camouflage (given the density of the product). Laura Mercier has great concealer/camouflage duos, which come with a setting powder as well (fantastic product!). Just like for the foundation, invest in 3 or 4 tones of concealers, from light to dark.

A word on Correctors, first find out how to use them, then purchase some! I had green corrector in my kit for years before I found the courage to use it...I just didn't want to turn anyone into the Hulk! Correctors are fantastic products, and when used well, they can make a huge difference. Make Up Forever has amazing palettes for correctors.

Setting Powders, are used to set the liquid and cream base products (foundations, concealers, camouflage). I like MAC's mineralized skin powders, also Ben Nye for a more intense job on a stage production, like a musical.

Rouges/Blush can change the feel of the make-up, there are amazing colors out there, and it's up to the make-up artist to decide how many to have. I have some spluges from NARS (my favorite is "orgasm"), and from Stila, MAC etc.
The best way to start is to buy a delicate rose, a hot pink, a peach and a maroon color.

Bronzers are also a great purchase. Buy a matte bronzer so it can serve as a contour powder and blush base. I love the ones carried by Benefit, MAC, and NARS.

Shimmers are also important, Benefit has some great liquid ones (Moon Beam and High Beam) relatively inexpensive and easy to mix with foundations. As for powders I go to my goldish colored blush from NARS ("Albatross"), almost invisible to the naked eye, but gives amazing cheekbones in photographs. *I put the powder shimmer on with a fan brush*

Eyeshadows...well, go crazy!!! Just kidding!
Try to find a palette with most colors to start off. Be sure to check that it has both shimmer and matte eyeshadows. Don't buy super cheap or the color pay off will be horrible, buy a mid-range palette. Tarte has some nice ones as well as Too Faced and NYX. Then, as the time progresses and the jobs start to pay I recommend putting together personalized palettes. MAC and Make Up Forever are some of my go to companies for my custom eyeshadow palettes. I have a neutral one for Bridal Make-up, Crazy pinks and purples, blues and greens for Fashion and Fantasy, as well as a sparkles one!
I also recommend the 12 color Cream eyeshadow palette from Make Up Forever, later on in your career, for Fashion and Fantasy make-ups (which includes metallic colors).

Eyeliners, are a personal preference. I use gel liner from MAC to line the lashes, I love how precise and mess free it is (apply with a synthetic angle brush), Kohl pencils (Stila and Estee Lauder) for the waterline and liquid liner occasionally for fantasy makeup (MAC). These products last a long time, so go ahead and buy few but good ones.

Mascara, I personally buy cheap!! The life span of a mascara is 3 months, so I go through a lot of them, and I find that the formulation of store brand mascaras, like L'Oreal, Maybelline, Rimmel is just as good as the big cosmetic companies products (if not better). My favorite (and has been for years) is "Double Extend" from L'Oreal. Have a regular and waterproof formula to choose from, as well as a lengthening and a volumizing formula, according to what the client needs. Use waterproof only when necessary (like Bridal make-up), because the product is drying and will damage lashes in the long run.

Lipstick is also a cheap product I buy, mostly because I have had better results from Rimmel and Revlon than from the bigger companies. I like Make Up Forever and MAC for Fashion colors (Black, Purple etc.)

Lipglosses are just as important as lipsticks, if not more! Find a nice non-stick/non-smelly formula and buy a pink, a peach and a wine color gloss; if you want to push it a step further buy a gold a hot pink and a red one too. NARS has some of the best formulas available, as well as MAC, with a fantastic selection of colors. Start with NYX lipglosses if on a budget, they are great!

False Lashes are often necessary in most make-ups. I buy Ardell, they are not expensive and have the thinnest base. Have some shorter ones and individual clusters (for Street make-up & Bridal), medium length for Fashion make-up and some crazy long ones for Fantasy make-up. Buy the appropriate lashes when you get booked for a job, so you won't have to invest too much up front.
*Remember that lashes need to be charged extra on a make-up job - it is common to charge double the amount of the cost of the lashes- of course the client gets to keep the lashes! *
My go to false lashes glue is DUO in dark. Only need one tube (will last a long time).
Lashes are so easy to apply, but require a lot of practice (do practice on other people, False lashes application on oneself is different than application on others...just like mascara application!).

Remember, don't go spend thousand of dollars in make-up all at once to stock up your kit. If registered for a Make-up course, wait until you begin the course, as most schools provide you with a basic kit.
Same goes for more experienced make-up artist being booked for a film or theatre production, as most productions offer a budget for supplies. Ask the cosmetic supply store if they offer a pro or student discount, most of them do, but need to apply early in advance before going shopping. Most companies also offer a student kit at a discount price, but proof of student registration is needed.

Let your Make-up kit grow with time and experience.

Make-Up Kit * Brushes

I have received an interesting amount of emails regarding my Make-up kit: what's in it? in what make-up is worth investing a lot of money? on which Make-up products can I save money? How do I get started?
Since this is a very large topic, I will write a few articles on the subject. Starting with this one.
Here is what I recommend to my Make-up students:

First of all, you are only as good as your tools! Having said that, don't rush over to the most expensive Make-up store and spend a fortune on a set of make-up brushes!!
I have brushes from all make-up companies and art supply stores! True that a "full set" looks pretty and professional, but not all of the big make-up companies have the best of everything! M.A.C. has great brushes, but I don't love all of them, same with Smashbox etc.
Make sure to know the use of the make-up brush you are purchasing first, and ask yourself: will I use it often, or is it a splurge?
I have done full make-up with a total of 5 brushes in the past, given it took a lot of cleaning...but it's doable!
So if you are just getting started make sure to invest in these basic brushes:

1. A big fluffy Powder Brush. Natural bristles. Make sure the brush is soft and the bristles don't come off easily (or you will constantly pick them off the client's face!). Test the handle, so it doesn't fall off on the first tug! Use the brush to powder the face for a flawless look.

2. A Blush Brush. Smaller than the powder brush, is used to apply blush. Natural soft bristles.

3. A Contour Brush. A natural bristle brush, cut at an angle. Will contour cheek bones, temple bones etc.

4. A Large Eyeshadow Brush. A flat rounded edges brush, which will apply a lot of eyeshadow in a short period of time. Use the brush to apply base color eyeshadow all over the lid.

5. A Smaller Eyeshadow Brush. Will deliver more eyeshadow with precision and allow for smaller details.

6. A Domed Eyeshadow Brush. Used for blending the colors together, or "smoke" the eyeshadows.

7. An Angle Brush. A small synthetic hair brush used to line the eyes with a liquid, gel or cream eyeliner. Also used for filling in brows and other small details. I have 6 or 7 in my kit (different sizes and density), couldn't work without them!!

8. A Concealer Brush. Also a synthetic bristle brush which will deliver a creamy concealer just where need it. Go small in size rather than large for precision (invest in a large one later on for creamy contouring and highlighting).

These are my recommendations in essentials for a brush set! Every other make-up brush to purchase is for preference or specific products application.
I lost count on how many brushes I have with me now, but I have purchased them throughout the years, so be patient and don't go drop all your money in every brush produced until you will have a use for them!

A few pro tips:

Art supply stores have a range of inexpensive synthetic brushes. That's where I load up on small angle brushes!!

Use a ring of colorful Nail polish to "mark" all your brushes; that way there won't be any brushes going missing when working with other Make-up artists. Especially useful during a make-up course, where all the brushes and products given to the students look the same!

If planning to take a Make-up course, wait before purchasing a set of make-up brushes, as the school might provide a set.

Other tools needed:

An Eyelash Curler. Yes, even if personally not using one; a lot of clients will need a good curling! I don't spend a lot of money on a curler, just make sure feels comfortable and has replaceable plastic cushions where the lashes are curled.

Small pointy scissors. Used to cut false eyelashes for sizing, cut eyebrows for grooming etc. The uses are countless; I once lent my scissors to a hairdresser for cutting bangs to a precise angle!

Tweezers. A metallic set, that can be easily sanitized. Perfect for grooming eyebrows and other stray hairs and also for holding on to the false lashes.

Lots of disposable Mascara wands (in different sizes). Never, ever, ever use the Mascara wand that goes back in the container, unless you are planning to give the whole mascara to the client to keep.
Disposable wands are used to keep the mascara free of contaminants and avoid spreading of infections. By the way, don't double dip the disposable wands, use one for each eye!!!
Remember the life span of Mascara is about 3 months, once starts changing consistency and odor, toss it out!!!

Disposable Foundation Sponges. I personally like applying foundation with a brush, but I still have sponges to blend to perfection.

If you don't have a lipstick brush (synthetic bristles brush, also available in art supply stores), then purchase a few disposable ones.

A palette knife (also available in art supply stores), or orange wood sticks. Use the knife to scoop products from the containers like stick foundations & concealers, lipsticks, gel & cream eyeliners...anything creamy really. Never, ever, ever dip a brush or fingers into the creamy products or they will be contaminated!

Cotton Pads. Used to clean, tone and moisturize faces.

Small Towels. I have 3 black ones with me all the time. Use one to set on the Make-up table, so all products and brushes won't get contaminated. The second one, put around the client's neck (if no smock is available), and the third towel, hang on the Make-up belt to clean the brushes.

Plenty of brush cleaner, hand sanitizers and baby wipes. The more the merrier!!! You can never be too clean and the clients love seeing how careful you are!!! Always sanitize and cleanse hands and brushes between clients (yes, even if the clients are related!!!), no excuses! Clients will gladly wait for brush cleaning time!

Have a good set of hypoallergenic Cleanser, Toner and Moisturizer. I always cleanse the face, even if the client is make-up free, makes a huge difference!

Make Up and Styling as a career

Hi Friends,

I have been super busy lately and so excited to be working on so many fun projects.
Had the pleasure, this season, to style for Levi's and for the grand re-branding of Mark's, two amazingly generous companies! I have met and collaborated with so many talented artists, that I find it nothing short of a blessing!
Then there is the Wedding Season, which is just starting to slow down, if you were one of the brides I Made Up for the Special day, I want to thank you for including me in the joyous celebrations! I just love doing Make Up for the lovely brides and their bridal parties, always leave feeling great!
Fashion Week is around the corner, and the collaboration with some of the city's finest designers is the cherry on the cake!
Halloween is just around the corner...yeeeeah I love Halloween Make Up, it's so much fun! And even though I will be in a course most of the day, my evening is already booking up with Fantasy Make Up for party goers.
I have also had the great pleasure to do Make Up for City TV, here is a TV Segment CityTv Edmonton shot recently.
I am looking forward working and growing in this wonderful industry. I would recommend any of you who wants to pursue your Artistry to jump in with both feet and work as hard and as enthusiastically as you can and you will never look back!!

New Hair Style

OMGoodness, I almost completely forgot to tell you...I chopped off all of my hair (well most of it haha). I wanted a change so bad, and after taking my 14 inches red brown curls to an asymmetric chocolate brown bob...I decided I needed something more drastic, so I pulled a Halle Barry!!!
I adore my new look, it's so easy and pretty! Now I look like the rockstar I am on the inside!

Blushing Bride- Make Up

As the wedding season approaches, I've had the pleasure to reassure every bride I've booked that their day will be memorable!!!
It is a huge concern of these beautiful women that they look as good as everything else they have planned, and it's understandable...after all, they ARE the brides, and all eyes will be on them! (sorry grooms, it's the truth!).
So here is a brief of what I suggest to my lovely brides before the big day.
Firstly, do not get so worked up...it will come together and it will be amazing! Stress is a big cause of blemishes, discolorations and lack of sleep! Want to look your best as a "natural" beauty, then you need to take a Chill-pill and relax!
Remember to drink plenty of water, no you won't be bloated...unless you are severely dehydrated and your body is trying to hold on to as much water as possible! Try a beauty regimen of taking a water bottle along your wedding day planning trips, and MOST importantly...drink the water!! LOL
Take care of all the Aesthetics needs well before the wedding day. Facials, waxing and other services need to be cared for a few weeks before the big day!
Meet with your Make Up artist one to two weeks prior to the wedding, so the final Make Up look is fresh in your artist's mind, and wear the trial make up the whole day to see the "Staying power" of the make up products your artist uses; this will also reveal any Make Up allergies your skin might have, as well as any other reactions, like oily discharges (easily fixed with blotting paper).
Please, do not allow a girl at a Make Up counter to "Get it right" on the morning of the wedding, it's too risky and might spoil your mood. Go to a professional who's familiar with your skin and the products to be used.
Another word of caution, do not use "Street Make Up" (or in other words "Everyday Make Up") for your wedding day, a lot of the ingredients used in everyday make up can react with the photographer's flash, making your face appear 4-5 times lighter than it is!!! That's why most of us have pictures where we look ghostly pale, even though we spent an hour getting ourselves all made up!
A real make up artist has studied the cosmetics ingredients, knows what to use and has PROFESSIONAL products in her kit!!
Do NOT, EVER EVER EVER trust a Make Up artist with dirty brushes, sponges etc.
A real Make Up Artist will have all the necessary cleaning supplies to disinfect the tools and assure a healthy Make Up application...I cringe when I see someone use the same (uncleaned) brush on a few people in a row...yewww!!!
In conclusion, my dear Brides, I want you to relax, take care of yourselves before anyone else, and shop around for a True professional to make you shine in all your beauty on your wedding day.

Packing Your Suitcase

A new Winter season is at our doors and with the cold weather comes also the desire to get away.
Whether you're jetting off for a long getaway or a week on a resort, these tricks will ensure you will have everything you need.

Make a List: Everything you think you will need on your trip, from Clothing to Toiletries. Lay everything out on a bed and check off the items on your list, so you won't forget anything (the check list is also great in case the airline loses your suitcase, it's a record of everything you packed).

Pick a General Color scheme: That way your clothes always go together and you never pack a shirt you won't be able to use. Stick with neutral basics and add a few touches of color with accessories (fun jewelry, scarves and belts). Always bring a lightweight sweater jacket for layering.

Always Pack sexy shoes: At least one pair of high heel shoes can dress up any outfit, even shorts!

Avoid Wrinkles: Softly fold you clothes and pack them separately -don't layer softer fabrics with harder ones. Pack jeans with jeans and cotton shirts with cotton shirts. Layer the heaviest fabrics at the bottom and the lightest at the top.
Pack a wrinkle remover for a special outfit. Hang the outfit, spray it gently with the wrinkle remover and smooth it down with the palm of your hand. Leave it hanging until dry.

Store Jewelry Separately: Pack the pieces of jewelry in a freezer bag to avoid it snagging your clothes and wrap each piece in tissue paper, to avoid them tangling and getting broken.

Never pack Documents in the suitcase: Keep all your documents on yourself at all times, never pack important documents, money or cards in your suitcase.
