Job vs Calling

I was introduced to an article today that tells a very familiar story. The article talks about someone that “finally” made it to Wall Street. This person worked hard, made the grades, impressed the recruiters, and earned a job at a prestigious bank. Now that person is wondering what the heck they are doing there. Today’s economy is a little different. The role banks play in our society has begun to change. General mismanagement and other high level mistakes have forced these huge institutions to ask the government for bailout funds. Having a job with a big bank used to be one of the most prestigious jobs one could have. In recent times, we have seen much of that luster diminish. So for this person, the BIG money and BIG prestige that was associated with working for a bank doesn’t seem as real. Now the person feels confused. They have worked so hard to get to this point in their career and it feels like an empty accomplishment. They want to leave their job and go to Hollywood. But what is that going to do? The real conversation here is one about having a “job” vs having a “calling”. It is easy to get the two mixed up. For many of us, a job is simply a means to earn enough to do what we want to do outside of work. However, a “calling” is an idea so compelling that we begin to organize our lives around it. A calling may or may not create a paycheck for you, but you are drawn to it nonetheless. Whether you see yourself having a job or a calling doesn’t really matter, they both have their pros and cons. The mistake is made when you get them confused. Just because you have a job, does not mean you have a calling. And just because you have a calling does not mean you have a job. Too many of us invest years of our lives pursuing a “job” with the misconception that it is our “calling”. Great MBA interview skills are a must. After you complete your essays, the interview is the next major hurdle to cross over. If you are fortunate enough to be invited to interview, be sure to put your best foot forward. Unfortunately, many applicants approach the interview tep incorrectly. Many applicants spend too much time talking about what the school can do for them. Instead they should balance their message and talk more about what they can do for the school. In the interview below I give you three simple tips to not only impress an interviewer, but impress them in the first 5 minutes of the conversation. This video provides a very simple framework for success. Use it to improve your MBA interview skills. Though the framework is simple and easy to understand, you must prepare by practicing your response. The first answer you give sets the tone for the entire interview. You want to be polished, comfortable, and confident as you express yourself. Take the time to practice so you can express yourself well. Feel free to post any comments or questions below. The application season is in full swing and it is time to sharpen your MBA interview skills. An MBA job conference can be a very valuable opportunity. You can meet and network with many companies at the same time. You can visit a booth, impress a recruiter, and earn an “ally” as you move deeper into the interview process. On the other hand, the MBA job conference setting can be very intimidating. There are SO many companies and they are all evaluating you at once. When you approach a booth, you must have your “story” down cold. If not, there is another highly qualified MBA standing right behind you waiting for their turn to speak. In order to make the most of your MBA job conference experience, be prepared. Do not think you can show up and “wing it”. Know which companies you are targeting and know how to impress them. Here are five tips to help you dominate at your next job conference. *

Know your Goals. Target a select few companies to pursue. Are you trying to get an interview or a business card? Know what you want before your approach the booth.
Know the Scene. Know the location of your target company’s booth. Look at a map of the conference center before you walk in. Be careful not to “wander” the conference floor.
Be Early. Be one of the first people in the door at the conference center. Early in the day there are less people, the recruiters have more patience, and you can earn an interview for later in the day. If you get started late, you will be part of the mob and it will be more difficult to differentiate yourself.
Be Energetic. It is difficult to smile in the face of people you don’t know, but give each conversation as much positive energy as you can. The longer you are in the conference center the less nerve you will have. Get in. Do your work. Get out.
Be a Closer. No matter how good or bad the conversation goes, do not leave without a business card or contact number. Do NOT leave empty handed.
