Entrepreneurs tend to want to scream their company message and forget that people buy from people/businesses they know, like and trust. I see it on social spaces all the time. Everyone is screaming about how wonderful their business is. Their social spaces are all about their business and very little about themselves.

They all bombard my newsfeed daily on facebook. But…if they didn’t bombard my newsfeed, would I know who they are?

Think about that for a minute. I set the blog up just two weeks ago and it needs to appear in the search engines before they will even consider offering you payment for a post. THEN you need to write the post, THEN get it approved, THEN get paid.

I get numerous requests per month for free consultations in my coaching and virtual assistant businesses. If the requester gives me general times they are available, I reply with an email giving them a choice of two times that work for me. At that point, it is up to them to tell me if either of those times work for them. Generally, that works out fine.

However, I occasionally get someone who does not give me any clue as to when they are available. In that case, I ask them to give me two or three SPECIFIC times over the next week that will work for them. Generally, they will reply with general times that work (ex. I’m free Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning). At that point, I will just pick one time that fits what they gave me and ask them to verify that time is good for them. Many times, I do not hear back. Other times, I do hear back and I call at that time and…what do you know…they don’t answer.

I’m thinking of changing my policy. I’m going to start sending people to my online calendar to schedule a time for their consultation. They will get a phone number to call and if they miss their appointment, they will not get another free consultation. That should take care of the inconsideration of some people. I hope…

I asked him a very important question.  “Let’s say you moved to a new town and need a plumber.  How do you find one?”  He said he would first go to google, search for “plumber” in the town he’s in, then look at their website.  I asked him what else he might do.  He said he would see if there were testimonials on the site.  He would then go to facebook and see if they have a facebook page so he could see what other people were saying there.

Great!  That is exactly what the average person does when looking for a service provider.  Now…where is your website and facebook page?  UH…UH…Well…UH…I thought about doing that, but really can’t afford it right now.

Really?  Let me ask you one question.  

Knowing that the average person does not even touch a phone book anymore and they use the internet to find what they need, can you really afford to NOT have an internet presence? 

He agreed that, considering how the average person looks for a business, he really needed to figure out how to afford to have an online presence.  It can be relatively inexpensive if you set up your website as a WordPress site and your facebook presence as a business page.  I now have a new client who needs a website, blog and facebook page for his business.

But how in the world does that work?

Find blogs in your target market.  This is why clearly defining your target market is so important.  Once you find blogs in your target market, you can comment on their posts and link back to posts that you have written about the topic of discussion.

What if you don’t have a post about the topic of discussion?  Simple…go write one.  Then go back, comment and link to it.

I love OPB.

I just set up a new blog and already have traffic to it.  It’s only about 2 weeks old.  I have a tracker on all of my blogs so I can see where people are coming from when they visit.  About 3 days ago, I noticed visitors were coming from google searches!!  I love being able to set up a blog and have people finding it within days.  I say days because the blog is just now 2 weeks old and people were finding it in google at about 11 days old.

There really isn’t any sense in blogging if you have no visitors, right?  You need people to read what you are writing.  Otherwise you might as well get a notebook and just write in it and keep it hidden in a desk drawer.  Blogging with no readers is a complete waste of time.

In order for your social space marketing to work properly, you must define one piece, one social space, as your “central hub”.  Your social space marketing should look like a wheel.  One thing that all wheels need is a center piece to keep everything together.  I use facebook as my central hub.  All other social spaces link back to facebook.

The biggest decision you have to make is where to blog. Some have started out with blogger.com. I recommend a WordPress blog hosted on your own site. The reason I recommend this is because you control your blog. If you use one of the free blogging platforms, the cost is great, but you get what you pay for. THEY control your site. You do not. If they don’t like what you are blogging about, they can shut it down. You could wake up one day and your entire blog could be gone.
