Pennsylvania. The 15 drug labels include several poison labels and it took us quite awhile to put it together. The labels , which we think date to the 1930s, measure 2.4" Wide x 1.4" High and still have the glue on the backs. The pharmacy was owned and run by Frank S. Ord and his wife Nell. Frank was born around 1901 and graduated from The University of Pittsburgh in 1923. Mrs. Ord was a 5th grade teacher in Slippery Rock. Sometime in the 1960s (we think) John S. Frank died in 1983 and John died in 1990.

Slippery Rock is located in the North West portion of Pennsylvania and even today only has a population of around 3,000. However, with cheap land, low water cost, and huge yields Washington State and the Central Valley of California flooded the market with apples. The Sebastopol area’s profits fell and apples orchards were reduced from a high of 15,000 acres in the 1940s to less than 4,000 acres today. This quality made tin toy is part of the Schylling Collector Series and it is a reproduction of the LSR-1 Land Speed Record holder. Although this tin race car looks similar to the Land Record Holder of the day, I think Schylling is taking a humorous tongue-n-cheek approach.

Just read this quote from the side of the box, “On February 21, 1930 the motoring world was shocked to learn that a new land speed record of 247.33 MPH had been established by Captain Jack Schylling driving the LSR-1. The car was developed in tight secrecy at the Schylling Motor Works in Rowley, Massachusetts. Schylling’s company was previously best known for their traditional wind up toys. “We always felt that we could take the knowledge we gained from making toys and scale it up”, said chief engineer Professor Paul Weingard. The LSR-1’s power plant is a closely held secret. Unconfirmed reports indicate the revolutionary motor uses a combination of springs, gears, levers and pulleys......

Our tin race car measures 11” Long x 3.25’ Wide with terrific graphics, free wheeling wheels (no motor), and a phenomenal full color box.

For adult toy collectors. The chloroform poison label measures 2.4” Wide x 1.4” Tall and is from Denton’s Drug Store in Mentone, Indiana. The store was owned and run by Glenn Denton and his wife Louise until he retired to Inverness, Florida in 1970. It was a Rexall store and checkout the telephone number, 47. Our guess is this label dates to the 1930s or 1940s.

The town of Mentone is the self-proclaimed “Egg Basket of the Midwest” because of its large commercial egg production and it has a huge concrete egg in the center of town which they consider the largest egg in the world. Mentone also is the boyhood home of Lawrence Bell, founder of Bell Aircraft.

Discovered in the 1830s, Chloroform (an organic compound) is commonly associated with the old movies when the bad guy used a handkerchief loaded with Chloroform to subdue his target. In reality it has several other uses. Yes, it was first used as an anesthetic since it smelled and performed better than ether, but it was later found to have toxicity and a tendency to cause cardiac arrest. It is a precursor in the production of Teflon and is a great solvent used to produce dyes and pesticides and it can be used to bond Plexiglas together. It measures 3.25" Tall x 2.12" Wide with beautiful pastel colors that are much better in person. Dr. Lynas began manufacturing remedies in his home in the middle 1800s after a successful medical career. In 1874 he established a laboratory and in 1898 he offically setup J.B. Lynas & Son. By 1913 the company had 1500 employees in Logansport, Indiana. Its interesting that for this Crown Hair Tonic and Scalp Cleaner bottle, the company is listed as J.B. Lynas & Son, Perfumers. Probably trying to establish his Boudior line. The motto on this bottle is "If there is life. The hair will grow." Of coarse, with 25% alcohol who cared.

$2.05
