Google's New Policy on Browsing History

From 1st March, Google is moving to its new privacy policy that allows it to gather, store and use personal information such as all data already collected about you including search queries, sites visited, age, gender and location will be gathered and assigned to your online identity represented by your Gmail and YouTube accounts.

After the policy takes effect you are not allowed to opt out without abandoning Google altogether.

No need to panic. There is still time.

Before the policy takes effect, you have the option of deleting your Google Web History by modifying your settings so that Google is unable to associate data collected about you with your Gmail or YouTube accounts.

The process is simple. Follow the steps below:

1. Go to the google homepage and sign into your account.

2. Click the dropdown menu next to your name in the upper-right hand corner of your screen.

3. Click accounts settings

4. Find the "Services section"

5. Under "Services" there is a sub-section that reads "View, enable, disable web history." Click the link next to it that reads: "Go to Web History."

6. Click on "Remove all Web History"

When you click on "Remove all Web History," a message appears that says "Web History is Paused." What this means is that Google will continue to gather and store information about your web history but it will make all data anonymous.

Google's ability to gather personalized information about you by assigning data to your Gmail and YouTube accounts will remain "Paused" till you click "Resume."

Endnote X4 at CSU

Are you still struggling with manual referencing? Are you not sold on the benefits of referencing software such as EndNote? If you are a staff member or a post-graduate student why not talk to a Faculty Liaison librarian? We can help you with every aspect of EndNote, from building an EndNote library to automating your referencing in Microsoft Word.

If you are already using EndNote, are you using an older version with less functionality? EndNote gets better with every new release. EndNote X4 is the latest version available to staff and students at CSU. The benefits of upgrading to EndNote X4 include:

1. Improved program responsiveness. EndNote X4 is quicker and more responsive that previous versions of EndNote because it contains fewer pre-loaded referencing styles, filters and connection files (the rest of these files can still be downloaded from the EndNote support site).

2. Compatible with Microsoft Word 2010 and Mac Word 2011.

3. Import reference data directly from compatible PDF files (PDFs must contain the appropriate metadata, including DOI numbers).

4. Use the EndNote search facility to search through the contents of attached PDF files (with text PDFs, not those created from scans).

5. New quick edit tab allows you to edit references without having to open them.

6. Create group sets or new groups based on combinations of existing groups.

7. Improved duplicates handling – view duplicates side by side and edit them in the duplicates window.

8. Add hyperlinks between in-text citations and corresponding item in the reference list.

9. Enhanced tools for managing and editing in-text references.

10. Improved footnote handling for footnote based referencing styles, such as Chicago 16th.

11. New auto-group created for references used in any currently active documents.

CSU Library Orientation Scavenger Hunt

We're celebrating O Week (Orientation Week) with a Scavenger Hunt, and every CSU student can join in.

Regardless of your mode of study - Offshore, DE or Internal - click on the "Gadget Man" icon on the Library’s home page and follow the clue to where he is hiding next. Follow all of the clues and the final one will tell you how to submit your entry.

You have from February 20th until March 2nd 2012 to complete the hunt and send us your entry. Seven winners will be drawn on the 5th of March and notified by email. The Scavenger Hunt is open to all CSU students (except for CSU Library employees) and you can win one of five $20 iTunes vouchers.

Review of Funding for Schooling—Final Report

The Australian Government has released the Review of Funding for Schooling—Final Report.

"The review was established to develop a funding system for Australian schooling which is transparent, fair, financially sustainable and effective in promoting excellent outcomes for all Australian students."

The panel examined the funding needs of students from all schools across the government, Catholic and independent school sectors.

The report aims to provide recommendations to ensure that all schools have appropriate resources to support all students nationwide.

Free Library postal service for onshore Distance Education students.

Great News! The Library will continue to provide free return postage to Distance Education students.

This means that for DE students living in Australia, there is no need to pay postage when returning items to the library.

A postage paid return address label will be included in each DE postage parcel. This label can simply be affixed to each parcel when posting items back to the Library.

The return postage service does not include items borrowed through the InterLibrary Loans scheme and does not extend to DE students living outside of Australia.

New ProQuest Databases, and Downtime

CSU Library subscribes to a number of databases provided on the ProQuest platform. These have traditionally included such datababases as ANZ Newsstand, Dissertations and Theses Full Text, ProQuest Religion, ProQuest Natural Science Collection, and ProQuest Science Journals.

Recently, CSU Library has subscribed to ProQuest Central, which includes a number of new databases, including the well-known business database ABI/Inform, and various other databases covering a range of subjects. (We are in the process of listing these new databases on our databases pages.)

ProQuest advises that, on Sunday 5 February 2012, for a period of 12 hours from 2 pm (AEDT), all ProQuest databases will be unavailable while infrastructure management is carried out.

ProQuest has said: “ We welcome customer feedback. Please email your comments to platform feedback at www.proquest.com/go/suggestions“.

Australia Day Closure

CSU's Australian Campus Libraries will be closed on Thursday 26th January for Australia Day. Normal services will resume on Friday 27th January.

Keep the kids entertained for the day by downloading these free Activity Sheets, includes colouring sheets, flag activities, crossword, puzzles and join the dots just to name a few.

And some Online Trivia. There are 3 levels for this, Joey (easy), Grey (Medium) or Western Grey (hard). Goodluck and have fun!

Renewing items on loan in Primo Search

You can renew your loans in Primo Search

1. Visit Primo Search.

2. Click My Library Record at the top of the page.

3. Enter your CSU username and password.

4. Click Loans from the list of Activities.

5. You will see a list of all your current loans. Click the Renew link next to the loan you want to renew, or click Renew All at the top of the page to renew all your current loans.

Note:

You will not be able to renew loans if:
• items are more than two weeks overdue
• you have outstanding Library fines or charges of $100.00
• another student has placed a request on that item

Primo Search – New name, same great search tool

Over the past 6 months, the CSU Library has been beta testing a new search tool, Search@CSU Library and the feedback has been so positive that we are ready to launch the service in March 2012. However, our users aren’t as happy with the name – you told us that Search@CSU Library is too long to say, too hard to remember, and difficult to type without it turning into an email address.

The new name - Primo Search - is short and simple, reflecting how quick and easy it is to get started with your research. Only the name is changing – the URL will stay the same, so you don’t need to update any bookmarks or links.

If you haven’t tried it yet, you will find quick search options on the Division of Library Services home page, the Library tab in CSU Student, or go directly to Primo Search.

Got a new eReader for Christmas?

Whether or not you were lucky enough to get a new eReader for Christmas, eBooks are a convenient and flexible resource available to everyone.

CSU Library subscribes to a wide range of eBook titles in all subject areas. You can access these at any time via the Library website on your eReader, computer or mobile device.

It's worth checking out two of our biggest multidisciplinary collections, EBL and ebrary.

EBL provides an extensive range of eBooks with thousands of EBL titles purchased for permanent use. You can also access a constantly growing number of titles not yet purchased by CSU Library. EBL books can be read online or downloaded for offline use by installing Adobe Digital Editions software on compatible devices.

ebrary is an eBook collection with more than 70,000 titles, covering most of CSU's teaching and research areas. No special software is required to access ebrary items.

eBook titles can be found by:

Doing a keyword search in Search@CSU Library and selecting eBooks under the Refine My Results options on the left of the screen.

End of year closing for CSU Libraries

With Charles Sturt University closing for the end-of-year break, CSU's Australian Campus Libraries will be closed from 12.30 pm (AEDT) on Friday 23 December 2011 until 9.00 am (AEDT) on Tuesday 3 January 2012.

Ontario Campus Library will be closed from 12.30 pm on Friday 23 December to 9.00 am on Tuesday 3 January (local time).

A full list of Library opening hours is available online.

You won’t be able to contact us for help and assistance during closing times, but you can submit an enquiry using our Web-Form. These enquiries will be answered when the libraries re-open in January.

Library staff would like to wish CSU staff and students a happy and safe festive and holiday season.

Carbon Price Calculator

In 2012, Australia will introduce new laws that put a price and limit on carbon pollution, in what many people are calling the "carbon tax".

CHOICE, the Australian Council of Social Service, and The Climate Institute have teamed up to look at how a price on carbon pollution will affect the cost of living.

You can go to the new YourCarbonPrice website to get information on the carbon price and to use the online calculator to estimate your costs, financial support from the government, and the potential savings you can make from energy efficiency measures.

There is also a link to the Climate Institute website, which reports CSIRO-AECOM research that shows that the impacts of the carbon pollution price on Australian households is likely to be smaller than anticipated.

Farewell to SmartSearch

Access to the Library SmartSearch service will cease on Tuesday 13 December 2011.

SmartSearch has been replaced with the new ‘http://www.csu.edu.au/division/library/find-info/search@csu-library’ that enables CSU staff and students to simultaneously search for print and electronic resources. Books, journals, journal articles, and other digital resources, e.g. CSU Research Output (CRO), CSU theses, can be found using a simple intuitive search tool, with more advanced search functions available if required.

Staff and students who have saved searches, alerts or records to the eShelf, in SmartSearch, will need to record these details and re-create the saved searches etc. in ‘Search@CSU Library’.

Changes to Informit (database) Collections

On 3 January 2012, 256 Australian journal titles in the Informit databases will be migrated to different collections in order to 'minimise duplication and create more subject-specific Informit Collections'.

Existing links to these articles will no longer work. Please check existing Informit links in your online teaching materials and update if necessary. RMIT Publishing has produced a list of titles displaying the old and new URLs for each title.

Search@CSU Library gets a facelift!

Search@CSU Library, the library's new search discovery tool, has undergone numerous enhancements and refinements in order to better meet the needs of CSU Library users.

Some recent improvements include:

Changing the name of 'My Basket' (where you can save searches and check your holds and loan information) to 'My folder';

Improving the appearance of the 'add to my folder' icon, which appears beside each item in your search results;

More accurate 'resource type' categories, e.g. 'books', 'ebooks';

Subtitles now included in search queries using 'starts with' and
'in the title' search refinements;

The options for refining your search by 'author' after entering a search query are now sorted by author name, rather than the number of results for each author;

Improved searching by ISBN;

Improved display of records with multiple versions of editions;

New library help page resources and Watch-it! tutorials.

A mobile version of Search@CSU Library is currently undergoing testing. This will allow CSU Library users to more easily and effficiently search the library's holdings from smartphones and other mobile devices.

Notice to all students who are graduating in December

This year, for the first time, graduation ceremonies have been brought forward to December of this year, rather than March-April of next year.

Did you know that your participation in a graduation ceremony in December might be affected if you have library items that are overdue, or if you have an outstanding library fine or charge?

To avoid possible embarrassment, and to allow you to participate fully in your graduation ceremony, please ensure that you return all library items to the Library, and that all library fines and other charges are paid, well in advance of your graduation ceremony.

Reftracker service temporarily unavailable (Saturday 19 November)

CSU Library receives online requests and enquiries from students and staff via its Reftracker service. These include various comments and suggestions, as well as Ask a Question, Book a Librarian, Suggest New Material, and CRO changes requests.

The service will be unavailable from 12 noon to 5 pm on Saturday 19 November 2011 (AEDT), to allow for moving the Reftracker network to a new hosting facility.

If you try to access the service during this time you will get a standard browser message about there being a problem with connecting to the website.

If you have any queries, please contact the Library, if necessary by a means other than Reftracker.
