Meteora, one of the most amazing places in Greece, if not in the world!

In fact, the producers of James Bond found them so impressive that they had Roger Moore climb the stone face of one of its rocks in the movie “For Your Eyes Only”.

Meteora, are giant rock formations crowned with five-hundred year old monasteries which look like they are inaccessible to anyone but … God ! It’s a rare geological phenomenon, one of nature’s mysteries. However, as amazing a marvel of nature as these imposing rocks are, the monasteries built on the top of these, are a marvel of man and seem just as miraculous. In order to build them, monks were bringing material and people up with ladders and baskets! This was also how the monasteries were reached until the nineteen thirties but (don’t worry!) now there are pathways and steps to the top.

The word “Meteora” in Greek means literally 'hovering in the air' and if you have visited Meteora or seen pictures, the name makes absolute sense. Being inaccessible to the Turks during the Ottoman occupation, it was these monasteries that kept alive the Hellenic culture and traditions and were not only religious centers but academic and artistic as well.
Meteora is a natural work of art, a visual feast for the soul, a divine destination not to be missed in your next trip to Greece!

Kalimnos Island, the Climber’s paradise!

Set deep in the heart of the Aegean Sea, lies the traditional and homely island of Kalymnos, just a few miles off of the Turkish coast and very close to the world famous holiday destination of Kos Island.

Greece … off the beaten track!

Pindos National Park, also known as Valia Kalda, is located in northwestern Greece, near the town of Grevena and is one of the most important National Parks in Greece. It was established in 1966, belongs to the Natura 2000 ecological network and is considered one of the most important protected areas for the maintenance of mountainous biodiversity. Valia Kalda, which means "Warm valley" in the Vlach dialect, is characterized by extensive forests of black pine and beech in the park's lower and middle altitudes and Balkan pine at higher altitudes. The National Park has several peaks over 2,000 meters, rapid streams and mountain lakes.

In addition, the area hosts a population of Eurasian brown bears which is a conservation priority species. Other mammals that live in the park are wolves, deer, wild cats and the Balkan Chamois. The park further provides shelter for more than 80 species of birds, including 10 types of rare bird species such as the Eastern imperial eagle, the Golden eagle and the Lanner falcon. A large variety of reptiles, amphibians, and insects, complete the picture.

Valia Kalda offers opportunities for hiking with its dirt roads being in a rather good condition (except in winter). The park is best accessed from north, from the village of Perivoli, while there is also a track from the west side, near Milia village. A climbing resort lies near Mavrovouni peak, at a height of 1,950 meters (6,400 ft.), which can be an ideal base for your excursions to the Park's area. According to the local legislation, it‘s not allowed to collect any organism of any kind , while camping and staying in the park's area after the sunset is prohibited. Additional restrictions include the lighting of fires, while activities such as kayaking and rafting need a special clearance from the local forestry.

One thing is for sure … visiting Valia Kalda is a once in a lifetime experience!

KOULOURI THESSALONIKIS

Greeks are not really a nation of having breakfast. We usually grab a “koulouri” on our way to work with nothing more than a coffee in our belly. If you've ever found yourself walking the streets of Athens or Thessaloniki on an early morning, then you might have happened upon a street vendor selling the famous Greek “koulouria Thessalonikis”, otherwise known as “simitia”.

It’s a plain, circular bread, topped with sesame seeds, crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside. Nowadays, the “koulouri” has evolved similarly to bagels in the United States; new flavors have been created in addition to the traditional plain variety, so we now also have the breakfast…option of a “koulouri” with cheese (usually feta), “koulouri” with chocolate, “koulouri” with cream cheese and “koulouri” stuffed with black or green olives.

The “koulouri” is a common snack and street food for both Greeks and our neighbors, the Turks. Actually, they were brought to Greece by Greek refugees from Asia Minor and Constantinople (Istanbul) who settled in Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece, and this explains why their…full name is “koulouri Thessalonikis”.

Local Tip: The “koulouri” must be eaten fresh, so it is best consumed early in the morning (not later than 10 or 11) or at a street vendor that has high turnover.

WORLD´S MOST BREATHTAKING BASE JUMPING SPOT

Every year the spot hosts the Summer BASE Jump Boogie event, where the best of the best make more than 300 jumps in five days. The jump off point is situated on the edge of a high cliff that overlooks the bay at 656 ft./200 m height. Once you jump, you have about 2 to 5 seconds before deploying your parachute and landing safely on the sandy beach.
While free falling in this breathtaking spot, the views and the excitement of the fall will definitely feed your adrenaline rush craving. At last…BASE jumpers have found their own paradise!

Anchoring in Greece – Mediterranean mooring

Even if you are an experienced sailor, anchoring in Greece when sailing the Greek islands can be a daunting experience due to the particularity of the deep and the waters. Anchoring is about safety. Under the very worst conditions – when leaving the anchorage or port is dangerous – you should be able to rely on your anchor system. In the east Mediterranean – Greece and Turkey – more time is spent at anchor than under sail and you will predominantly anchor off the quay while “stern to” (rarely “bows to”): berthing Mediterranean style.

Advantages of Mediterranean Anchoring when Sailing in Greece

1) Any wash of ferries, changes of wind direction, any swell entering the bay, gusts, etc. will be cushioned by the catenary curve of the anchor chain which will keep the yacht clear of the quay: berthing along side won’t protect the yacht.

2) In the Mediterranean – especially when sailing in Greece – berthing along side is often hampered by blocks of ballasting near the quay. No neighbouring crews walking on your deck greatly adds to your privacy, especially so if bows-to.

3) Some islands in Greece are home to rats, cockroaches, etc. Mediterranean mooring (with the gangway raised from the quay!) helps to prevent vermin getting on board.

4) It is much easier to leave a (crowded) port. No skipper likes to be the innermost yacht – four yachts thick – in an along side mooring situation.

5) As the bow anchor typically offers more holding power and a longer (heavier) anchor chain it is very useful to become an expert in the stern-to variant of berthing Mediterranean-style

Mediterranean mooring manoeuvre– Tips and Hints

1.Position the bow the full length of your anchor chain away, or otherwise as far as possible, ready to drop anchor. In a crosswind go a little upwind since by the time the anchor touches seabed you will have drifted out of position.

2.Drop anchor in front of the spot on the quay you are aiming for. Note, that anchoring NOT perpendicular to the quay (as people often do in a crosswind), could well mean crossing and potentially fouling the anchor lines of your neighbors. Also, the wind could be blowing from the opposite direction later.

3.Just before the anchor reaches the seabed, put the engine in reverse. Maintaining speed helps you to manoeuvre, and moving astern also prevents fouling the anchor with its own chain. Moreover, if there is room, I would advice a gentle one knot speed in reverse, before dropping the anchor: a)Less chance the anchor will foul. b) Less drifting out of position in case of crosswind. c)The anchor will often set earlier which means a greater distance from quay, maximising the scope.

4.With the engine in reverse, the “prop walk” will steer the yacht to the left when looking at the intended spot on the quay. Yet, this is only the case when the engine is in reverse and not if it is in neutral. First make speed and counteract the prop walk as much as possible by putting the rudder at 45 degrees (more will only brake), then put the engine in neutral and the yacht will listen to the rudder normally.

5.The crew on the foredeck should put a mild tension on the anchor line, while reversing, to help the anchor dig deeper. Not too much, since you would lose speed and also the anchor could break out.

6.Near the quay there is an increased risk on lose lines, fishing nets and other rubble, so it is good practice not to use the prop the last few meters. Braking by feeding the anchor less line works better also helps the anchor set firmly.

7. With one line on shore (windward one if cross wind), it is time to put pressure on the anchor: take anchor chain in till the catenary curve becomes more of a straight line. If after a while (sometimes immediately) the catenary curve reappears, your anchor has not set... by the time you have winched one third of the anchor line back on board, start considering a second attempt.

So, during this whole Mediterranean mooring manoeuvre, not so much the helmsman but the foredeck is in control. Although it is a first a bit scary to steer backwards into a tight slot between two expensive yachts, speed keeps the yacht manoeuvrable.

Extra Tip: Plan to arrive early (typically before 15:00) at the port of destination so that there is ample space to manoeuvre and lots of berths at the quay to choose from.

The last nine go on a path along and next to ponds, where the player has to hit daring strikes, which makes a round of golf on the course a challenging experience.

4) Glyfada Golf Course is situated about 12 kilometers from Athens, the seaside town of Glyfada. It was opened for play in 1966 and is home to the Hellenic Golfing (Greek Golf Federation).

Donald Harradine and Robert Trent Jones Sr have designed this brilliant course and it hosts annual events like the Hellenic Golf Championships in October.
Glyfada Golf Course has been hosting big events regularly like the World Cup Tournament in 1979, the Mediterranean Gamers in 1992, as well as the PGA Senior Greek Open in the last three years.
The golf course is a green sanctuary of gently sloping hills, with mature trees and undergrowth.

5) Afandou Golf Course is situated in Afandou Bay, about 18 km from Rhodes town, on Rhodes Island.
This 18-hole championship course, is open for play all through the year and offers the test of championship golf course with the pleasures of the Rhodes scenery and the Afandou beach.

The well known British golf course architect Donald Harradine has designed the course and it opened for play in 1972.

The initial three holes are along the sea and golfers have a mixed opinion as some find the course as unexpectedly ordinary, while others consider it as a fun course to play. There is a local championship golf course, (international standards), very active Golf Club, which organizes an International Championship Cup twice a year.
The Club House is very simple with all facilities (changing rooms, lockers, showers, pro shop, snack bar) all offered with the friendly and helpful service. The Club is closed on Mondays.

Fall and spring are the best time to visit the club when the famous Greek sun is less intense.

6) Costa Navarino - Dunes Course

The impressive seaside Dunes Course was designed by former two times US Masters Champion and Ryder Cup captain Bernhard Langer in association with European Golf Design.

The championship course, set in a landscape of diverse topography with spectacular sea and river views, incorporates some links-style features in areas closest to the sea, with tall dunes dividing some of the holes adjacent to the golden beach. Parts of the course venture into olive and fruit groves, while some holes run along a small river that meanders through the site.
Each hole has multiple sets of tees to allow the player to select the course length that best suits his or her game. Measuring just over 5000m from the front tees, and almost 6200m, the course has a par of 72. Generously wide fairways and large greens make good targets which will be appreciated by most golfers.

Much of the course had been crafted to reflect the rugged outlines of the distant mountains. As you move further inland, the course evolves as the character softens to fit with its typically Messinian surroundings of olive and citrus groves.

Greek Independence Day - March 25th

The celebration of Greek Independence Day on March 25th draws inspiration from one of the holiest days for Greek Orthodox Christians, the Annunciation of the Theotokos. This is the day that the Archangel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would bear a child.

Bishop Germanos of Patras seized the opportunity by raising the banner of revolution, in an act of defiance against the Turks and marked the beginning of the War of Independence. Cries of Zito H Ellas and Eleftheria H Thanatos (Freedom or Death) can still be heard today. These freedom fighters, or klephtes as they were called, of Greece sacrificed much for their country. Kolokotronis, Nikitara, Karaiskakis, Bouboulina, and Mpotsaris are some of the heroes of the revolution. They fought the War of Independence for 9 years (1821-1829) until a small part of modern Greece was finally liberated and it was declared an independent nation.

The struggle for the liberation of all the lands inhabited by Greeks continued. In 1864, the Ionian islands were added to Greece; in 1881 parts of Epirus and Thessaly. Crete, the islands of the Eastern Aegean and Macedonia were added in 1913 and Western Thrace in 1919. After World War II the Dodecanese islands were also returned to Greece

Therefore, on March 25th Greeks celebrate Greece's victory in the War of Independence against the Turks who had occupied the country for 400 years. ( ottoman occupation) .For Greece, the 25th of March is the equivalent to the 4th of July to Americans.

The Greeks celebrate this day with marches and celebrations throughout the country. Its a full military parade with soldiers, tanks, jets and helicopters, firemen, policemen and representatives of all of the armed forces.

In Athens and most major Greek cities a school parade for the celebration of the Independance Day takes place the day before. Some children wear traditional Greek costumes. The "best" student of each school gets the privilege of carrying the Greek Flag on the parade.

March 25th is perhaps the most important celebration for Greeks.

Everything is closed on this day

Consequently, the Acropolis and all other archaeological sites and all museums are closed on this day. Nevermind, as if you are in Greece on March 25th it's worth spending the day watching the parade. The Greek Independence Day parade is something that few people grown in the USA or other western countries have ever seen.

Local Tip : You are supposed to eat fried bakaliaro (cod) and skordalia (garlic sauce) on that day.

Clean Monday (Kathari Deftera )

Clean Monday, called Kathari Deftera in Greece, is a public holiday in Greece and Cyprus, where it is celebrated with outdoor excursions, the consumption of shellfish and other fasting food, a special kind of azyme bread, baked only on that day, named "lagana" and the widespread custom of flying kites. Eating meat, eggs and dairy products is traditionally forbidden to Orthodox Christians throughout Lent, with fish being eaten only on major feast days, but shellfish is permitted in European denominations. This has created the tradition of eating elaborate dishes based on seafood (shellfish, molluscs, fish roe etc.).

Traditionally, it is considered to mark the beginning of the spring season, a notion which was used symbolically in Ivan Bunin's critically acclaimed story, Pure Monday. People on Clean Monday usually take their picnic baskets and put inside fasting foods because it is the day that Lent begins. (40 days before Easter)

Epiphany (Epiphaneia) - January 6th

Epiphany in Greece is known as Theofania or Fota. The first sanctification of the Epiphany (The Enlightenment) takes place in church on the eve of the holiday. Afterwards, the priest goes from house to house holding a cross and a basil branch. As he walks through each house, he uses the basil to sprinkle (bless) all the areas of the home. An old custom in Crete , which is almost forgotten today, was the preparation of the fotokoliva (boiled wheat with peas) on the eve of Epiphany. The fotokoliva was eaten by the people, but they also fed it to their livestock, which was believed to insure good health and fortune in the homes.

The big sanctification takes place the following day, January 6, the day of the Epiphany in Greece. A long procession is formed and follows whatever road that leads to a body of water - the sea, a river or even a reservoir. Up in front of the procession are the cherub icons, followed by the priests dressed in their best holiday splendor, then the VIPs, followed by all the people. In the bigger cities, the procession becomes more elaborate with the addition of music and military contingents. At the end of the sanctification ceremony a priest throws a cross into the water, thus blessing the waters. Then, those who dare - mostly the younger people of the village - jump in the usually icy water and compete in retrieving the cross. The one who brings the cross up to the surface will enjoy good luck and health for the entire year.

If you happen to be in Athens on the 6th of January, keep in mind that the event is particularly spectacular in Pireaus.
In Kozani the Lougatsaria or Karnavalia folkloric celebrations are held. Similar celebrations are held in Kastoria known as the Ragoutsiaria and go on until the 8th.

This day is the name day for Fotini and Fotis.

Planning to visit Greece during the Greek Orthodox Easter?

Excellent choice!!!

You should feel so lucky to visit Greece during that period, and to be able to share with the locals the traditional activities which mark the progress of the forty days (Sarakosti) towards Holy Week (Megali Evdomada) and Easter (Pascha) itself.

Easter does not just happen in Greece on the Holy week. It begins with Apokreas, which is to Orthodox what Mardi Gras and Carnival is to Catholics. Several weeks of partying, a tradition that may go back to the celebrations of Dionysious, take place all over Greece with special celebrations in Patras, Athens, and in various other towns and villages, many with special activities such as the famous Goat dances of Skyros. In Athens the last two weekends of Apokreas people dress up in costume and go to the Plaka, hitting each other with plastic clubs that squeak, and throwing confetti. These clubs are thought to be a remnant of the veneration of the phallus from the ancient Dionysian festivals of Athens and in the town of Tyrnavo in Thessaly giant penises are paraded through the streets There are celebrations in Moschato and Rendi, between Athens and Pireaus, that are similar to being in New Orleans on Fat Tuesday.

In Patras the celebrating goes on for forty days and as many as fifty-thousand people take part in the parades. But after the last weekend of Apokreas, known as cheese week (the week before is meat week) many Greeks begin their fasting on Clean Monday, which is a day for spending time with friends and family, going to the countryside and flying kites. From clean Monday to the week of Easter things calm down conciderably.

The music associated with Orthodox Easter is beautiful, particularly the hymns of mourning sung on Good Friday. On the first Friday evening of Sarakosti there are the first of the Chairetismoi (Salutations): these are prayers of devotion to the Mother of God, rather like the 'Hail Mary' of the Roman Catholic Church. A different group of these prayers is chanted on each of four Fridays; on the fifth Friday all four are chanted as the Akathistos Hymn. 'Akathistos' literally means 'not sitting', as the congregation stands while the verses are chanted. To listen to the Hymn in the church of Saint Dimitrios, in the Psyrri area of Athens is a really special experience. This church is rather unusual in having a choir as well as chanters, and in parts of the hymn there is an unobtrusive musical accompaniment.

A week after this comes Palm Sunday (Kyriaki Ton Vaïon), when the Church services celebrate the entry of Christ into Jerusalem. In many churches, especially on the islands and in villages, little crosses have been made in the days before Palm Sunday and are given to the people at the end of the service. In Athens it is more likely to be some sprigs of bay leaves, but they are equally prized: people sometimes put them in purses, or keep them in their homes to bring good luck for the next year. For those who have been fasting there is a respite on this day, as fish is allowed.

Now the most important week of the Orthodox calendar begins: this is Megali Evdomada (Literally 'Great Week'), when the pillars in the churches are covered with purple cloth and the services follow the Passion of Christ. Most Greeks, even if they haven't fasted in the previous weeks, will do so now.
In food shops, especially bakeries and patisseries, you see new notices attached to the trays: 'Nistisima' means that the food has been made without animal products. Fasting certainly doesn't mean 'no food'! Some of the pastries and sweets made now are more delicious than at any other season; seafood is allowed and at this time of year it has been freshly caught.

On Megali Pempti (Holy Thursday) the people remember the Last Supper and the Betrayal of Christ. Although so many people have left the city, the churches in Athens are always crowded: you have to go really early if you want to have a place to stand inside. (A place to sit will be almost impossible to find!) In the evening service the account of the Passion of Christ in all four gospels is read, and a cross with the figure of Christ on it is carried in a procession around the church, while the beautiful hymn 'Today he … is hung upon the tree ….' is chanted. Finally the crucifix is placed prominently in the middle of the church.

On this day the red eggs which are traditionally associated with Easter in Greece, are prepared. Packets containing the red dye are on sale everywhere this week. (Also blue and green!) In the homes hard boiled eggs are died red in memory of the blood of Christ.

Megali Paraskevi (Holy Friday) is the most solemn day of Holy Week. The shops are closed till 1.00 p.m., so that everyone can go to the church to venerate the crucifix. It's impossible not to be affected by the atmosphere of mourning: the church bells toll all morning, and the flags on official buildings are at half mast. The chanting from the cathedral is relayed by loudspeakers, so the people sitting in the cafés around the square are conscious that something memorable is taking place. After the evening service on Thursday, the women of each parish will have decorated a funeral bier with garlands of fresh flowers. During the Friday morning service the figure of Christ is taken down from the cross and wrapped in a white cloth, which is then placed in the sanctuary. An embroidered cloth, the Epitaphios, is placed on the bier; this is then sprinkled with flower petals. The priest places the Gospel (Evangelion) upon the Epitaphios. (This word is also used to refer to the bier itself).

During the rest of the day, the churches are filled with people paying reverence to the Epitaphios.

In the evening comes the service of the Epitaphios (Funeral Service). The bier is taken out of the church and carried round the streets in solemn procession, while a Lament, mourning the death of Christ, is sung. This is one of the most moving parts of the Easter rituals: a band comes first, playing solemn music; the Epitaphios congregation follows the with lighted candles, while people in the flats which the procession passes watch from their balconies, holding candles or incense burners. In some areas, like Piraeus, the processions from different churches will converge in a square: the sight of several processions coming together, each with its own Epitaphios, is really impressive. Finally the procession returns to the church. This used to be a signal for people to descend upon the Epitaphios and to strip it of most of the flowers. However, in the church of Saint Spyridon in Piraeus, the Epitaphios is placed safely behind the gates at the front of the church; a priest then distributes handfuls of flower petals to the congregation. I think this is a perfect solution – everyone has a reminder of the occasion to take home, but the decoration of the Epitaphios remains intact, to be enjoyed by visitors to the church until Easter has passed.

On the next day, Megalo Savvato (Holy Saturday), the sorrowful mood of Friday has abated. Now the people concentrate on the final preparations for Easter itself. This is the last chance to buy the Easter lamb, and the atmosphere in the meat market is frenetic as people try to secure a last minute bargain. At home, the mageiritsa is being prepared. This is the traditional Easter soup, which will be eaten after the midnight liturgy - the first meal to break the fast after nearly fifty days. It's very rich, made from a variety of herbs and the intestines and offal of the lamb which will be roasted for celebratory lunch on Easter Sunday. Surprisingly, many Greeks don't actually like this soup, but it is an essential element in the ritual, and no Easter table would be complete without it. (you have to try it ! )

At about 11.00 p.m. the churches are full again for the service of the Anastasis – Resurrection. There is a feeling of anticipation as the people stand waiting, holding white candles.

Many of these will have a sort of plastic cup fitted to the top, designed to prevent the hot wax from falling on to hands, or the church floor! Just before midnight the lights in the church are extinguished, then the priest comes from the sanctuary holding a lighted candle. From this, at the stroke of midnight he lights someone else's candle; people begin to light their candles from each others' and the church gradually becomes bright with the light of the candles. All over the city, church bells are pealing, as the priest chants 'Christos anesti' ' ( Christ has risen from the dead ) . There is a feeling of relief and happiness, as people repeat 'ChristosAnesti' to each other and the reply is given 'Alithos Anesti!' ( 'He is risen indeed ) ! Outside, the noise increases until all the bells are pealing.(Not all the churches reach midnight at exactly the same moment!)

Fire crackers are set off (unfortunately, every year we have lethal accidents caused by fire crackers!) , the ships in the harbour sound their horns. The chanting continues outside the church, but now most people begin to make their way home, in groups of family or fiends, holding their lighted candles. The aim is to get your candle home without losing the flame, but this can be difficult, especially if there's a wind. People are constantly stopping to relight strangers' candles and this adds to the jollity – it's always a memorable experience to be walking throught the streets in the early hours, surrounded by people carrying candles. Even the interiors of the cars that pass are glowing with them! When the people reach home, the head of the family makes the sign of the cross three times over the door with the candle. The smoky mark of the cross will remain until next year.

Now the Easter feasting begins, but in the churches the Easter liturgy, or mass, is still going on. You could stay until the end of the service – the chanting is beautiful, and now you can be sure of finding a seat! In Saint Spyridon's church, in Piraeus, the members of the congregation are given a packet at the end of the service, containing a small tsoureki, the traditional sweet Easter bread, an Easter koulouri (biscuit), a little paper icon depicting the Resurrection and a red egg.

These eggs are an essential part of the Easter tradition. A game is played with them in which each person tries to crack someone else's egg with his own. The winner is the person whose egg lasts the longest: the prize is good luck all year!

Although the family will have shared the eating of the mageiritsa, eggs and Easter bread on returning from church, the real Easter feast takes place at lunchtime on Easter Sunday (Kyriaki Tou Pascha).

In the country, people will spend the morning roasting whole lambs, or kids, turning them slowly on spits over charcoal fires in the open air. Even in Athens, you could see people roasting their lamb in the street - there's very little traffic in the city on Easter Day!

The church celebrations do not end with the midnight liturgy: on Sunday there is another service in the afternoon, called Vespers of Agape (Love). This is really beautiful in the cathedral in Athens: it is celebrated by the Archbishop and literally dozens of priests, all in gorgeous robes. The hymn 'Christ is risen from the Dead' is repeated, as it will be in every church service for forty days, until Ascension Day. Sometimes a choir sings Byzantine hymns, but for me the most memorable part is the chanting of the gospel, which on Easter Sunday is the story of the disciple Thomas, who didn't believe that Jesus had appeared to the other disciples after the Crucifixion. This is traditionally chanted in different languages – as many as the priests can provide.

The decorated Epitaphios is less prominent now: it is empty, except for a sign which says 'He is Risen; He is not here'. This sign will remain until next year – a message of hope.

If you want to have a ....traditional Greek Easter we strongly recommend to head for an island or the countryside.
However, during this week (Megali Evdomada) Athens steadily becomes empty, as people leave to go to their family village or island. For those who remain, and for visitors to Athens, this has the advantage that it's easier to get an unrestricted view of activities!

Want to see how serious Greeks take Easter?...........The computerised signs on the front of the city buses also have a message. On Saturday it is 'Kali Anastasi' (Literally 'Good Resurrection'); on Sunday it is 'Kalo Pascha' – 'Happy Easter'. I don't think there are many countries where you'll see that on public transport!

For the Coffee Lovers !

Coffee is the ....unofficial national Greek drink!

For most Greeks, the consumption of coffee is a beloved habit, a daily ritual, a fundamental addiction. Almost all of the adult population, and not only, have made the pleasure of drinking coffee an inseparable part of their lives.

As other nationalities throughout the world have, so too have the Greeks modified their cultural customs according to the consumption of coffee, a custom in its own right which is nourished by the general way of life and the temperament of the people. As such, it is characteristic that the enjoyment of drinking coffee is not represented by a fleeting instant in one’s busy day, but a prolonged recess, which becomes the motive for socializing and interaction.

Greeks do not (usually) drink their coffee from a plastic cup, standing up, in a hurry on their way to work. On the contrary,you can find a Greek in a café, sitting down for hours (!) on end, combining his daily dose of caffeine with a variety of other things.

In particular, the many cafeterias which are found in almost all of the central areas and neighbourhoods of Athens as well as in the countryside, are meeting points for social contact and enjoyment, appealing equally to the young, as to the more mature crowd who devote many hours a week there, to meet friends, and exchange news. In an attractively designed environment accompanied by music, widely diversified, according to the style and atmosphere each owner wishes to convey, the patrons are required to choose from a variety of coffee types {most of the varieties of coffee available worldwide} and other hot and cold drinks, alcoholic drinks, sweets and snacks.

Whilst drinking a coffee, you may see people playing board games, which most cafes have at their disposal, or traditional backgammon ( tavli ).

For those with an enthusiasm for technology, there are of course internet coffee shops available. It should also be pointed out that the self service system is very rarely implemented in cafes, and such there are hardly any such cafes.

Within this framework, it can be understood to a certain degree, why Greeks pay for their cup of coffee more extravagantly than in other countries. These inflated costs associated with all coffee related products, are in part, due to the fact that a cup of coffee is not defined by a plastic cup, but it is accompanied by other services, provided during its consumption. Of course it would be an oversimplification to ascertain that the cost of coffee is influenced exclusively by the Greek custom of spending lengthy hours in a cafe, drinking only one hot drink. The reasons are primarily financially related, reflecting the general rate of inflation.

The traditional Greek coffee:

The Greek coffee is served hot in a small cup and saucer. It is prepared very easily and quickly in boiling water. The various proportions, or, the absence of sugar and milk, undoubtedly, determine the taste.

Apart from the traditional Greek coffee, Greeks also prefer the frappe. This comprises of a chilled glass of strong coffee, served in a tall glass and apart from sugar and milk, may also contain ice-cream. The frappe is especially preferred during the summer months.

A variety of coffee especially popular in Greece, is Nescafe. It is prepared quite easily with boiling water, preferred hot with sugar, and is served in a cup with saucer.

Take away coffee:
For those who yearn to enjoy a quick cup of coffee, there are various locations where one may purchase one, apart from the cafes. Throughout all of the central streets of Athens, and in the suburbs, there are at least 2 or 3 casual snack bars per area, serving coffee, not to mention the fast food chain stores. The prices are clearly less expensive, with relation to café prices, although there is definitely not the same variety to choose from.

Traditional coffee shops: (kafenio)

For those who adore tradition, and the old customary way of life, the traditional coffee shops or “kafeneia” can be found. It is true to say that in the 21st century, in Athens, there are only a few that retain the traditional style, mainly located within the suburbs. A tourist may see them more often in the countryside, at the main squares or “plateias” of villages or small towns.

The atmosphere is traditional, the comforts minimal in relation to cafes, and the selection of coffee offered, is limited. The patrons usually represent the mature-old age bracket, and are usually very familiar with one another.

In a coffee house in Greece you might find anything from handcrafted straw-bottomed chairs to modern plastic stools. Tables could be the plain wooden variety to fine marble. Whatever the decor, the kafenio remains an important institution in Greek society.

It's a place to sit and relax, so you needn't be in a hurry to order. It also provides a spot from where to observe the day's or evening's activities going on street side or dockside.

It's the norm to see men playing cards or enjoying a game of tavli, often staying for hours. The traditional Kafeneio is a man's world in Greece.
Even today, men far outnumber the women patrons. On hot summer days, you may be joined by a few local cats also in need of a break from the Greek sun. And tourists eager to order their first frappe (iced coffee)

Some coffee houses close for the siesta time, but many remain open from the early morning hours to late into the night. The best time for socializing in a kafenio is after 6 p.m., when the air starts to cool and friends begin to meet for a chat over drinks.

Apart from socializing, business is frequently conducted within the walls of cafes all over Greece. Merchants talk their deals and lawyers meet with clients. House or boat prices are discussed. Mayors hold open town meetings and Orthodox priests set up their various appointments for weddings and baptisms.

One foreign tourist on a small Greek island reported how she happened by a pleasant-looking kafenio and selected an outside table under an olive tree. She asked the waiter for a coffee, then enjoyed a quiet morning sitting there watching passers-by in the nearby square.

Only when she asked to pay was she was politely informed she had seated herself outside the man's private home.

In the countryside or on small islands, the kafenio is the center of life, a so-called "second living room" to discuss politics or talk sports. It used to be the town's sole public telephone was located in the kafenio. There are usually local and regional newspapers available for patrons to borrow and a television is kept on whether or not anybody bothers to watch it.

Even in touristy areas, at least one coffee house will be set aside for locals. Tourists who chance to wander in will be served, of course, but are not encouraged by any flashy signs posted outside in English. In fact, tourists may not even notice these little gems.

(Local Tip)
Pay attention to the color of the doors (and sometimes window banks) of the kafenio, you'll learn something about the political affiliation of the owner! (in the countryside and small islands)
Blue stands for the conservative New Democrats, while green means PASOK, the Socialists. Red signifies the Communists, or KKE. Of course, this isn't true of all coffee houses. Not all owners wish to declare their party of choice so boldly!

Usually you can't order much in the way of food in a kafenio, although you probably can order sweets of some sort. You can order water, hot tea or beer. All foreign label beers are made in Greece under license. Various soft drinks are available. You'll also find spirits, such as anised-based ouzo and brandy (often the Metaxa brand) on the menu card. You'll probably get a mix of mezes (small appetizers).

If you want a mild instant coffee, simply ask for Nescafe (or Nes). Most patons order traditional Greek coffee, which is prepared in a variety of ways. Ask for sketo if you want unsweetened. Metrio is medium, where coffee powder and sugar are mixed. Double- sweetened is called glyko. But that's just an overview, the list of ways to get your coffee goes on.

For tourists, a kafenio might be the perfect spot to wait for the afternoon ferry or to get out of the sun between hikes. But it plays a far greater role in Greek society than what you might take in at first glance.

Traditional Greek Drinks

Greece is famous of its wines and strong drinks. There is a huge variety of Greek wines, each region being famous for their own variety of grapes.

The Wines of Santorini are unique in Greece as the grapes grown on the volcanic soil, which gives the wine an interesting mineral aftertaste.

Mavrodafni is a sweet wine made in Patras. It’s dark and is usually served as a digestive or a late night drink.

Retsina is a famous Greek white wine with a particular resin taste which is obtained during production. In Greek Tavernas they usually serve Retsina.

Ouzo – the national drink of Greece

Ouzo is the most well known traditional beverage. Greeks adore it, and prefer it especially during the summer months, when they may enjoy it with company, during the afternoon after a day at the beach.

It is prepared exclusively within Greece through a distilled procedure of alcohol, water, anise, and other aromatic substances [usually cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg] It is difficult to determine when the production of ouzo first began, nevertheless we already know that already from the 19th century, quite a few areas within Greece had substantially developed the manufacture of distillery production.

The cost a bottle of ouzo is approximately 5 euro, whilst in taverns or restaurants it is served in a carafe which costs around 3 euro each.

Ouzo, which resembles water because it is colourless, is usually served as an appetizer. As it is a particularly strong spirit, many water it down. With contact with water, it becomes cloudy and turbid, more refreshing and its potency is reduced.

Greeks accompany ouzo drinking with their favourite appetizers (mezedes). Many combine it with grilled octopus, cut into small pieces, as well as other seafood [such as anchovy, whitebait and sardines]. It is also preferred with the traditional Greek salad [tomato, cucumber, olives, feta cheese] and with an assortment of cheeses. A less common mix is ouzo with fried zucchini and egg-plant, or with pickles.

Brief details about Ouzo:

There are three versions about the naming of ouzo. In reference to the first, its name is derived from the phrase “uso di Massiglia,” or in other words, towards the use of Marseilles, where it once had trade relations. The second version refers to its origins in the ancient Greek verb, “ozo” [that is, I smell], whilst the third, and less likely version states that it is derived from the phrase “ouzo’ [that is, that one cannot live without ouzo]
Ouzo contains 40% alcohol.
Ouzo is also used as an ingredient in cocktails. It may be combined with orange juice or tomato juice and a dash of pepper.
Ouzo may be combined with Greek coffee. Once the coffee is prepared in the usual manner [boiled in a “briki’ or traditional coffee pot, with sugar and water], a teaspoon of ouzo may be added.
Ouzo which is produced in the South of Greece contains sugar, whilst alternatively in the North of Greece it is preferred significantly potent.
Ouzo is an exclusive Greek product and is protected by law by the European Union.

There is an ouzo museum in Mytilini, Lesvos, at Plomari, belonging to the Varvayianni family who are involved in its production. Exhibits within the museum include the first evaporators, which date back to 1858, tools and containers and bottles for its storing, photographs and books.

Where to drink Ouzo in Athens (Ouzeri):

Naxos: located in Psyrri. It provides a pleasant atmosphere with reasonable prices. It also serves tsipouro.
Marko Antonio: This is an ouzeri on the Piraeus coast [Akti Themistokleos No. 22]. It provides a lovely view, good food and prices.
Thomas: It is situated at the main square at Halandri. It is widely visited, and its prices are approximately 15 euro per person.
Athinaiko: Located in the centre of Athens, on Themistokleous street. It is a little on the expensive side. Closed on Sundays. Tel: 210- 3828484.
Mantho’s Steki: This is an ouzeri in Ano Patisia [Halepa Street No. 68] It provides a pleasing atmosphere with good prices. On Fridays and Saturdays, its patrons may enjoy live music.

Tsipouro – A really strong spirit

Tsipouro is a particularly favoured spirit of the Greeks. It is also renowned as tsikoudia and raki (in Crete). It is a very strong spirit, produced through a very complicated distillery procedure of pomace [residue of the wine press] in Crete, Thessaly, Epirus and Macedonia. Alternatively, other fruits or nuts may be used [berries, sour apple, fig, quince and arbutus]. It represents a long tradition in Greece but it was legalized at the end of the 1980’s. In some particular parts, such as in Crete, it is drunk at all hours of the day. It is usually preferred before a meal.

The price of tsipouro varies from 5-9 euro. It is flavoured with anise or fennel, and is drunk either warm [at room temperature] or chilled. It is served with appetizers such as potatoes, stuffed vine leaves, olives, peppers and pickles. In some areas it is accompanied with seafood appetizers just as ouzo is.
Brief details about tsipouro:

The word “tsipouro” initially referred to the pips of the grapes.
Tsipouro contains 38-47% alcohol.
Until 1988, the sale of distilled pomace [tsipouro] was illegal in Greece
It is believed that the distillery of wine press residue is deep rooted and was common practice dating as far back as the Byzantine era.
The Italians compounded grappa from distilled wine press residue, which resembles tsipouro. It the Middle East, there is also a similar beverage which is named arak.

Where to drink Tsipouro in Athens (Tsipouradaka):

The Voliotiko: Located on Mesoghion Street in Holargo. Its prices are quite reasonable. Tel: 210-6543594.
Rakosillektes: This is a tsipouradiko at Psyrri [Karaiskaki Street and Aisopou No. 2] with good prices. On the weekends, it is open also for lunch. Tel: 210 3222240.
The Voliotiko: A tsipouradiko in Thission [Erisihthonos Street No. 6 and Eptahalkou Street]. Prices range from 15-20 euro per person. Tel 3468315.
The Matinades: This is a tsipouradiko offering traditional local products from Crete. It is located in Paleion Phaleron [Zisimopoulou No. 79] It is open from 11 a.m. Tel 210 9419686.
Faros: This is located at Glyfada [Aretis and Antheon streets]. Its prices vary from 10-15 euro per person. Tel 210-9640389.

Rakomello, the type of drink preferred by young people

It is prepared with raki, cinnamon and cloves which once heated, honey is added. It is served in a small glass, accompanied by a cinnamon stick.
In winter it is drunk warm [at room temperature], whilst in the summer, chilled.
It is the traditional beverage of Amorgos, and its visitors may find it in every tavern and restaurant.
Rakomelo was used in the past in Crete, as a remedy for the common cold.

Metéora is the second largest monastic and pilgrimage area in Greece after Mount Athos. The first monks took refuge on these cliff tops fleeing an invading Turkish army around the 11th century. Several monasteries were built in the centuries that followed and all the building materials had to be winched up in baskets. Until 1920 this was the sole means for getting supplies up to the monasteries. According to numerous historical sources, there were once thirty religious communities but today only six of them remain and can be visited; other smaller monasteries, mostly built during the 14th century, are now deserted.

In the past, monks had to climb steep rocks to reach the monasteries but today you can follow the steps cut into the rock or ride up a special cable car. The Shipwreck beach (Naváyio), Zakynthos (Zante)

Ikaría

Lésvos

On the island you can also find a Zen centre and other spiritual and cultural forums. Kaloní is the bird-watching capital of Europe, also rich in wild flowers. Chios or Híos

Known as the “Mastic island”. Explore the famous Mastihohória, a series of fortified villages built in the 14th century during Genovese rule. Amongst them, Mestá is a medieval treasure with preserved castle towers, ancient churches and magnificent stone houses tightly joined together with arches. Here you can enjoy delicious dishes cooked with mastic, or have a sip of soumáda, a traditional drink made of almonds. Rich history, numerous museums, and religious feasts reveal this island’s long tradition in history and culture. There are always long sandy beaches, secluded or not, as well as deserted coves waiting to be discovered.

Sámos

Samos is the birthplace of the Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras, the philosopher Epicurus, and the astronomer Aristarchus of Sámos, the first to propose that the Earth revolves around the sun. Follow their footsteps, and visit numerous archaeological sites –the Heraion of Samos is a monument of World Heritage–, old monasteries and churches, and attend cultural events and music festivals. The Philosophy Conference of the University of Athens is also organised every year at Pythayóreio. Sámos is an island extremely rich in vegetation with white-sand beaches, and traditional villages. The island is also known for the “samiótiko krassí”, the sweet Samian wine.
Samiopoúla is the largest islet surrounding Sámos, visited by tourists mostly during the summertime.

Inoússes

is a complex of nine islands, located between Híos and the Erythraia Peninsula of Asia Minor. Here, the Naval Museum is dedicated to the century-long nautical tradition of the islands. The whole island complex has been included in the European network NATURA 2000.

Psará

The island was first mentioned in Odyssey, rhapsody III by the name of “Psyrie”. Being the birthplace of famous warriors of the 1821 Greek War of Independence, Psará became a symbol of the Greek history. The island also used to be the third nautical power in Greece, after Hýdra and Spétses.

Antípsara

Part of the Psará island group, it is located 48 miles west of Híos. During the summertime, here you will enjoy lovely beaches and clean waters. In August, St. John’s small church becomes a place of religious pilgrimage. The island is also included in the community network NATURA 2000 as a Special Protection Area (SPA) and has been declared an Important Bird Area of Greece.

Foúrnoi

Interesting flora and fauna – aromatic plants, thyme, savory, sage, lentisk, bearberry and dwarf juniper, mandragora and olive groves form a stunning landscape. Here Mediterranean monk seal populations, dolphin and sea turtle species find refuge.

Ayios Efstrátios

Ayios Efstrátios (called Ái Strátis) is a small volcanic island in the northeastern Aegean among Límnos, Lésvos, and Skýros. Due to its ruins of ancient cities, and serene unspoiled landscapes, the island has been declared as a Site of Community Importance (SCI), and an Important Bird Area of Greece.

Ayios Minás

an islet of the eastern Aegean which lies east of Foúrnoi, and south of Sámos. The island has been included in the European Community network NATURA 2000 as a Special Protection Area. It is also one of the Important Bird Areas of Greece.

Thýmaina

is an islet located between the western part of Foúrnoi and the eastern part of Ikaría, rich in aromatic plants, savory and sage, and home to rare species of flora and fauna.

Zakynthos Island (Zante)

Zante is the flower of the East.

Zákynthos (Zante) is a verdant island endowed with fertile valleys and a temperate climate (area: 406 sq. km; coastline: 123 km). Its landscape diversity has resulted in different types of beaches: there are sandy beaches in secluded coves where the tranquil waters are deep blue on the island’s southeastern part; yet, if rugged cliffs and an interesting underwater world are to your liking, try the western part of the island.

The Venetians, who ruled Zákynthos from 1484 to 1797, called the island “Fioro di Levante” (flower of the East) as there are over 7,000 species of flowers on Zákynthos. The third largest island of the Ionian Sea, after Corfu and Kefaloniá, is internationally known as “Zante”. Zákynthos is said to have been the island’s first inhabitant and the ancient acropolis is attributed to him. He was the son of Dardanos who ruled the ancient kingdom of Frigia. A Venetian fort was built at later times on the site.

The Venetian architectural influence has left its stamp on Zante despite the damage sustained due to the seismic activity in the area. After the ravaging 1953 earthquake and the ensuing fire, a number of historical buildings and churches burned to the ground. Consequently, the significant treasures these buildings were housing perished. The town was rebuilt according to a plan where strict anti-seismic specifications applied and, to a large extent, respecting the town’s former architectural structure.

On Zante, great care is taken to protect two endangered animal species, namely the caretta caretta sea turtle and the monachus monachus seal.

The city of Zakynthos is the capital of the island and at the same time the island's port.

Take a tour around the city and visit:

- The Solomos Square surrounded by buildings with characteristic traditional architectural features of the island, arch-shaped windows and arcades. The bust of D. Solomos national poet of Greece dominates in the centre. Here you can also find the Public Library (with 55.000 volumes), the Post-Byzantine Museum of Zante exhibiting treasures such as statues trimmed with gold, icons and art woodcuts.

- The Aghios Markos square. Here, in 1797, the revolutionaries (popolaroi) burnt the Libro d’ Oro and planted the tree of freedom. This paved square is the main meeting point for locals and visitors. Here, you will find the Museum of Solomos, Kalvos and Eminent Zakynthians which also hosts the bust of the Greek national poet, created by Georgios Broutos in 1902.

- Rouga: Its name is Alexandros Romas street, starting at Aghios Markos Square crossing almost the whole town. This street with the impressive arcades has been the main commercial center of the city for centuries.

- The Venetian Castle situated on a hill overhanging the town in the place of the old acropolis named Psofis.

- The Stranis hill, 2 km away from the town, offering a great view. Here, the poet Dionysios Solomos inspired the ‘Hymn to Liberty’ (later the Greek national anthem) and the “Free Besieged” attending the siege of the city of Messolonghi.

Visit also the remarkable churches of Zakynthos

- Aghios Nikolaos tou Molou (Solomou Square): a church of Renaissance order (17th century) with a belfry dating back to the Byzantine period. Aghios Dionysios lived here in 1853.

- Aghios Dionysios (at the new pier of the port): where the relic of the patron-saint of the island is kept in a silver larnax.

- Aghios Markos (1516): The belfry of this catholic church situated at the Aghiou Markou Square is a copy of the one of Saint Mark’s basilica in Venice.

- Aghios Georgios: The army commanders Kolokotronis, Nikitaras, Fotomaras as well as other fighters of the 1821 Revolution took their vows on the icon which is kept in this church.

- Panaghia Pikardiotissa at the outskirts of the castle.

Zakynthos is famous for its cultural life.

Some of the famous cultural Events are:

Carnival: A traditional town crier goes around the island proclaiming the program of the Carnival festivities. On the last Sunday of the Carnival is the procession of the Carnival King. The festivities end with the “Mask Funeral”.

Litany and artistic events in the memory of Aghios Dionysios on August 24th and December 17th.

Easter: The Holy Week in Zakynthos has its own character with ancient customs and an exceptional rite as far as the religious ceremonies are concerned.
The celebration of Holy Week on Zakynthos Island is considered to be unique and unforgettable both for locals and visitors to the island. At noon, on Good Friday, crowds of worshippers take part in the procession of the Crucified through the town.

In the early hours of Holy Saturday morning and starting from the “Saint Nicolas” Cathedral Church the epitaph procession takes place in accordance with the local ancient custom, while the Bishop announces the Resurrection at sunrise.
At the first chime of the bell, the Bishop lets white doves free while from the bell tower clay vessels are thrown onto the road just as is done by all the inhabitants of the island out of their windows.

Ionian Islands (overview)

The temperate climate; the deep and cool sea waters; the mountains; the lush vegetation; the cultural heritage; and the cheerfulness of the inhabitants, make the Ionian Islands the ideal place for a holiday as well as rest and relaxation.

What is more, the traits of the Ionian Islands are perfectly combined with a flawless tourism infrastructure, excellent hotel accommodations, restaurants, diving centers, sea sports, cultural events, and a multitude of sights, historic monuments and museums worth visiting.

Scattered along the western coastline of Central Greece, the Ionian Islands as they are known, are an island cluster comprising twelve small and large islands whose total surface area comes to 2,200 square kilometers. Zakynthos (Zante), Ithaki, Kerkyra (Corfu), Kefalonia, Lefkada, and Paxoi are the six, large Ionian Islands. Antipaxoi, Erikousa, Mathraki, Othoni, Meganisi and the deserted islets of Strofades south of Zakynthos are the smaller Ionian Islands.
Together with the island of Kythira and the neighboring Antikythira the islands form the island cluster of Eptanisa (=seven islands). Nevertheless it should be noted that Kythira and Antikythira are completely cut off from the rest of the Ionian islands situated as they are across southern Peloponnese and the coast of Laconia.

Once, the Ionian Islands were part of Central Greece but were torn apart when the terrain sank due to the seismic activity along the great coastline fault of the Ionian Sea. This accounts not only for the ragged shores and hauntingly beautiful beaches but it also accounts for the islands’ tall mountains, once part of the Pindos mountain range which crosses Central Greece. It also accounts for the great depth of the waters in the area which, at 4,406 meters, is the greatest in the Mediterranean.

The Ionian islands have a mild and temperate climate which makes them the ideal location for vacation or residence. In winter, the mountains of Central Greece stop the cold northern winds from reaching the islands while, in summer, the heat is tempered by the meltemia, the soft, northwestern winds, and the sea breezes. Due to the air currents prevalent on the Ionian islands, many of the island beaches have developed into internationally acclaimed windsurfing centers.

The Ionian Islands have been inhabited since Paleolithic times, have been through many invasions, and have received the influence of a variety of cultures.
The Ionian Islands were part of the Byzantine Empire until 1204 when the Franks took over Constantinople and the Ionian Islands were eventually ceded to the Venetians. Under Venetian rule, the Ionian Islands formed their own local nobility whose register survived as late as the 19th century.

From the time of Frankish rule until 1864 when they were joined with Greece, the Ionian Islands were also ruled by a number of foreign conquerors. Tourist protection by Greek consumer protection law

When travelling to Greece, it is advisable to bear in mind the following:

As a consumer, you are protected by Greek consumer protection law for all transactions you make while travelling in the country.

All enterprises, regardless of their nature (tourist or otherwise), are obliged to issue written receipts for the total amount they receive. Possession of a receipt safeguards the consumer in the event of any claim or dispute with the enterprises.
Foreign visitors must ensure that they have valid medical cover before departing.

The following is valid during your stay in accommodation licensed by the GNTO and displaying the Special Function Sign:

The hotelier is obliged to lisence vacant rooms to customers and provide all advertised amenities.

Within 3 days of receiving an enquiry for a room, by any means (telephone, letter, or email), the hotelier is obliged to inform the customer by print whether or not they accept the booking, and include details on the booking (type of room, length of stay, price). A written response protects both the customer and the hotelier.
The deposit for the booking cannot exceed the 25% of the total accommodation cost, and on the other hand cannot be less than the charge for one night.
In the event that the customer wishes to cancel a booking, and the cancellation is made 21 days prior to the agreed arrival date, the hotelier is obliged to refund the deposit in full, while for cancellations made within 21 days, the customer must pay the hotelier the 50% of the total cost of the cancelled booking.
In the event that the hotelier is unable to provide rooms they have confirmed with customers, they are obliged to secure customers’ stay in alternative accommodation of at least the same category, in the same town, which offers the same amenities and services as those advertised by their own establishment.
The hotelier is only responsible for valuable belongings entrusted to them by the customer, and for which they have issued the relevant receipt.
Keeping pets of any kind in a hotel is forbidden, unless the hotel provides a designated area for pets. In all cases, a prior arrangement on this issue must be made between the hotelier and the tourist-consumer.

The following is valid for transactions with tourist agencies licensed by the GNTO and displaying the Special Function Sign:

The tourist agency is responsible to the consumer for all the services they have sold, including those provided by third parties (hotels, restaurants, car rentals, etc.), except in cases of personal or third party liability, or force majeure.
In all cases, the customers of a tourist agency or car rental agency must be informed by print about the terms under which services or products are provided prior to making a purchase.

Specifically, for Organized Trips (P.O. 339/96), which Greek law defines as a fixed combination of at least two of the following elements, i.e. transport, accommodation or other services (participation in meetings or events of a professional, cultural or artistic nature, meals, guided tours etc.), it is obligatory to sign a relevant contract, which includes:

1. The terms attached to the services included in the contract (cost and category of accommodation).

Should acquire, for their own convenience, detailed information regarding the use of public transport at their destination, especially with regards to the cost of the journey, ticket validity and cancellations, and recommended arrival times in advance of the departure of the service.

Has to be aware, when using taxis, that drivers are obliged, upon request, to issue official receipts for the total cost of the journey, which include vehicle’s registration number and owner’s name.

Lake Trihonida

Surface area: 96 km2

Lake Trihonida is an unexplored wonderland of beauty and remarkable biological diversity. The lake, in the Aetolia region of Western Greece, was created by vast geological changes. This is the largest lake in Greece and, as well as being beautiful, it is a major natural habitat of enormous ecological value with significant stocks of fish.

More than 140 species of bird can be found at the lake - thirty of them endangered. The birds nestle in the reed thickets or in the area surrounding the lake. On the shores, impressive calcareous fens create habitats of special scientific interest. Centuries-old plane trees, willows, oleanders, osiers, eucalyptus trees, olive groves and citrus trees create a forest landscape of outstanding natural beauty. In spring, wild orchids, cyclamens and gladiolas give off an intoxicating scent that rejuvenates the senses, and the water itself is dotted with beautiful white water lilies.
The lake is home to a wide variety of species of freshwater fish - some of these are rare and some delicious! Taste the superb lake sandsmelt, a gastronomic “must” to savour at local tavernas!
In the evening, when the sun withdraws discreetly back into its kingdom, the lights in the small villages of Arakynthos are reflected in the calm waters of the lake.

Activities: Explore the area by renting a sea bicycle or try paragliding to enjoy a birds’ eye view of the lake!

The Prespa Lakes

In the Florina region, surrounded by mountains, there is a magical world of incomparable natural beauty created by retreating glaciers and a series of seismic phenomena. Two important lakes here, Great and Small Prespa, provide a stunning sight, reflecting the wooded slopes of the surrounding mountains in their waters.

One of the most important wetlands in Europe, the Prespa lakes are considered to be a paradise for migratory birds; hundreds of bird species, many of them endangered, nest and breed here, among them the Dalmatian pelican, the cormorant and the heron. Kit yourself out with the right bird watching equipment and visit the special Bird Observatory, where members of the Hellenic Ornithological Society will tell you all about the birds or even lend you a telescope to observe them.
Don’t forget to cross the floating bridge leading to the island of Saint Achilios in Small Prespa and admire the ruins of the 10th century church of the same name. Visit the caves where hermits used to live and admire the rock paintings which can be seen at Fishermen Bay or along the shores of Great Prespa. At the end of your tour of the lakes, wander around the traditional settlements of Psarades (meaning Fishermen) and Aghios Germanos, where you can also try a meal of carp, one of the delicious fish found in the lake, Florina peppers and gigantes beans accompanied with a little local tsipouro (a clear schnapps-like spirit).

Activities: Don’t miss out on the opportunity to go on a romantic boat ride across the Great Prespa lake on traditional boats called “plaves”.

Lake Plastira

Surface area: 25. 2 km2
Deepest point: 60 m

Also known as “Little Switzerland”, Lake Plastira is surrounded by an idyllic landscape of unspoiled natural beauty that steals visitors’ hearts as soon as they set eyes on it. One of the biggest artificial lakes in Greece, the lake was created on the site where the Tavropos River used to flow in antiquity towards the Acheloos River further south. This marvellous stretch of water was created thanks to the vision of Nikolas Plastiras (after whom it was named), who wished to create an impressive dam that would bring great benefits to the whole area. Green mountain peaks bestow even greater beauty on the region and fast-flowing streams embellish the breathtaking scenery. Every season here has its own beauty and adds to the charms of the Agrafon region for thousands of visitors all year round.

Activities: A host of activities are available for visitors to explore nature in the area, including canoe-kayaking, sea biking or a trip in a traditional piroga (a small flat-bottomed boat).

Lake Pamvotida

Surface area: 23 km2.
Deepest point: 5 metres

This well known lake was in ancient times known as “Pamvotis” (the great provider). Situated right next to the city of Ioannina, this uncommonly beautiful lake is a true gem of the Ioannina Basin region. With a fascinating history full of legends and traditions that go back centuries, the lake of Kyra Frosyni * has become famous beyond the borders of Greece.
The lake is supplied by the springs of Mount Mitsikeli, of Drabatova, Sendeniko and Krya. Its waters are usually calm, though it freezes on occasions. It exerts a mysterious charm over the locals, who spend sunny summer days on its shores, revel in the morning mist around its banks or walk next to it on melancholic winter’s evenings.

There are thick reed beds around the lakeside as well as dense thickets of willows, poplar trees and huge plane trees which offer shelter from the wind to a host of local and migrational birds. Herons, grebe, snipe, swans and cormorants all “earn their daily bread” by snacking on the local fish population.
The lake has two main features: a dream-like peninsula with its historic castle and towering minarets and the small island – the only island in Greece to be inhabited and yet not have a name – which basks in its green waters.
Little boats will ferry you through the local nature, past historic monasteries and into the picturesque fishing community, where the real heart of the island beats. Sample some of the desserts that Ioannina is famous for, enjoy the warm welcome the locals offer guests or try some of the popular local snacks, such as carp, eel and frog’s legs.
The secrets of the lake are well hidden in the shroud of the morning mist. They await you when you take a trip through legend and history.

Activities: The Lake offers perfect conditions for water skiing, rowing and canoeing, as the wind in the area is usually very favourable.

She was a beautiful young girl that asked her parents to allow her to marry a Greek merchant from Venice so as to avoid being forced to join the harem of Ali Pasha, the local ruler (she was only 12 year old). One day, when her husband was away, Muhtar (Ali’s son) fell in love with her (although he too was already married). Unfortunately, Ali Pasha also liked her, so he sent his son abroad on a military mission to be able to get close to her himself. She refused his advances, so he accused her of prostitution and ordered her to be executed (along with 16 other girls) by being drowned in the lake! The year was 1801. The story of Kyra Frosyni is so popular that many taverns, cafes and boats on the lake are named after her.

The lake of Kastroria

Surface area: 28 km2.

With its uniquely glorious natural beauty, Lake Orestiada in Kastoria (kastoria in Greek means beaver – the area used to have a large population of the animal) enchants visitors with its indescribable beauty. It has been calculated that the lake came into existence 10,000,000 years ago and that, in its present form, it is a remnant of an older expanse of water that covered 164 square kilometres.

Lake Orestiada makes a stunning mirror in which the fur trading city of the same name is reflected. It is home to a significant population of birds with more than 200 species, many of them rare or endangered. Swans, wild pelicans, herons, cormorants and wild duck shelter in the dense forests on the shores of the lake and the moisture-loving trees around it, which lovingly protect their feathered guests beneath the canopy of their leaves. At the first light of day, the lake erupts into life. Fishermen in traditional local boats skilfully compete with the waterfowl to catch the varied rewards the lake has to offer, such as crucian carp, carp, perch and roach. When the sun begins to dip down to the horizon, cyclists and romantically minded walkers seek tranquillity and inner calm by walking amongst the gigantic copper-green plane trees that surround the oval lake.

Activities: The lake at Kastoria is ideal for water-based activities such as rowing, sailing, water skiing, fishing and boating.

Hydra Island

Hydra in Greek Mythology was a nine-headed monster, sister of Medusa.

Hydra in the Saronic Gulf is one of the closest islands to Athens and is perhaps the most beautiful harbor in the Greek Islands.
Just 35 miles from the port of Pireaus in Athens , Hydra is a popular island for sailors, but the island is also easily accessible by water taxi or high speed hydrofoil from Pireaus making it a possible day trip from Athens or one of the other nearby Saronic Gulf Islands (Poros,Spetses).

The Greek island of Hydra has many claims to fame. Although covering just 56 square kilometres it has supplied Greece with five prime ministers.

Its waterfront cafes have hosted celebrities from all over the world including Henry Miller who sang its praises in The Collossus of Marousi. Hydra used to be the destination of fashionable artists during the sixties and has kept a highly cosmopolitan character (It’s where Leonard Cohen, the Canadian poet-turned-singer, has a house.Cohen was a near-permanent resident on the island in the 1960s and still visits occasionally ).

Famous for its nightlife, fine restaurants, B&B style hotels, villas, shops and traditional architecture, Hydra is a favorite weekend destination for Athenians because it takes little over an hour to get there from Pireaus.

It has one of the most gorgeously picturesque harbours in the Aegean. And, astonishingly for a place only 64 kilometres from Athens, its primary mode of transportation remains the donkey! (no cars or motorbikes are allowed on the island!)

Hydra is an artist colony and you’ll see why when you arrive in the picturesque port of Hydra Town.There are so many charming reasons to write about the island of Hydra. It is an island with cobblestone paths winding through traditional white washed houses with red tiled rooftops, colorful trim and aromatic flowers. It is a small island with lots of picturesque tavernas to choose from.

Perhaps, one of our favorite spots in Hydra is the Hydroneta waterside bar/cafe which is a short walk from the port. The cafe sits below the cannons and wall of Hydra Town and is perched into the cliffside with several terraces to sit upon with a cocktail or Nescafe. You can seat on the rocks below, diving into the warm, blue waters over and over again.
Some might be turned off by the lively music which is almost always playing, but sunset brings on a relaxed atmosphere with classical music playing in the background.
If it is not too crowded, we highly recommend a stop for a drink and a swim at Hydroneta.

By car

From Athens the distance to Poros, by car, is approximately 150 klm.
Through the National Road Athens-Korinthos, we go left, after the isthmus of Corinth, to Epidavros. From Epidavros, we follow the newly opened road and in 10 min. we reach the place Kalloni.From Kalloni, in 15 min. we reach Galata, that is across Poros Island.
The road is an extension of the National Road and for your trip you will need 1 hour and 45 min.
From there you follow the coastal road and in a half an hour and less you find yourselves at Metoxi.Metoxi is a place opposite the island of Hydra, where there is a parking space for you to leave your car and cross to the other side in Hydra, by

HYDRA BEACHES

...The beautiful beaches with the grey color of the rocks
and the blue of the sea, give to Hydra a natural wild beauty
and make it the ideal place for inspiration and creation...

Hydra has got a lot of beaches with rocks or sand and pebbles.
You have got access to them on foot, with donkeys or sea transportation means.
Common characteristic of these beaches are the crystal clear blue waters.

Close to the harbour is a beautiful rocky area with deep blue water, called "Spilia".
It attracts many tourists every year and it is an ideal place to enjoy the panoramic harbor view. It is also a place where you can have snacks and drinks, day and night.

Near Spilia is another beautiful beach for swimming in blue waters and nice music from the bar 20 hours a day, called "Hydronetta". (our favorite spot in Hydra!)

Just next to Hydronetta is a small pebble beach, "Avlaki" beach with lights when the night come down and disco.

Following the road next to the port we reach the place "Kamini", a small, natural, picturesque harbour full of fishing boats.

Next to it, it is "Mikro (small) Kamini", a beautiful, small, pebbled beach, ideal for water sports and small children. In Kamini there are tavernas with local food and hospitality.

From there by walking, we reach to the place "Vliho", which it has a beautiful beach with clean waters and white houses up to the rocks, besides the small beautiful shrine of Saint Haralampos. You can also find local tavernas.

After 20 minutes walking and after passing a 17th century bridge, we reach the place "Palamidas", with a sand beach.
There is located the Manor of Boulgaris and the ex house of Pashas.
Near the beach of Palamidas there is a place to repair boats.

After Palamidas is "Molos", a nice rocky beach. Next is "Kaoumithi", a beach with thick sand.

"Bisti" is a unique pebble organized beach 10 minutes by taxi boat and 30 minutes by regular boat, ideal for underwater fishing.

Next beach is the one of "Saint George", located between two hills with pine trees.
To the rocks up from the beach you find the Church of Saint George.

Towards the south east side of the island one can find the organized pebble beach of "Saint Nikolaos", with crystal clear waters, surrounded by pine trees, ideal for underwater diving.

To the east there is "Nisiza", another pebbled beach and following is "Klimaki", a large beach with cottages.

After cape Rigas, we reach "Limnioniza", the most beautiful pebbled beach of the south shore of the island, ideal for underwater diving.

After 25 minutes walking distance from the main port, 7 minutes by boat, or 3 minutes by sea taxi, there is an organized beach called "Mandraki".
Here you will also find water sports like windsurfing,skiing and beach volley in the facilities of the hotel Mira-Mare.

If you don't want to walk, you can reach all these beaches by sea taxi ( TELEPHONE CENTER : 22980-53690 ). Sea taxis will quickly get you there, but we have to tell you that sea taxis are not the ideal solution for you if you are on a low budget holiday trip!

Alternatively, you can get to most of these beaches by a kaiki (boat-taxi). It will take you much longer but is cheaper (and more.... greek in our opinion! )

WHAT TO SEE IN HYDRA

1) Historical Archives Museum

The Museum was founded in 1918 and moved, in 1952, to its present day location which is a traditional Hydriot mansion donated by the ship owner Gikas Koulouras.

The building was demolished and completely rebuilt according to the Hydriot traditional architecture in 1972.
It is located nearby the ferry docks, on the eastern side of the harbour and houses a collection of portraits, an important collection of the town's archives (18 000 documents) relating the history and the culture of Hydra, small objects of the 18th and 19th century, various exhibits from the Balkan wars and from the First and Second World War, and beautiful local traditional costumes including the karamani, dark coloured trousers which used to be the typical masculine attire.
A Library with 4800 books (from the 18th century since today) can also be visited on the first floor.

2) The Koundouriotis Mansion

The beautiful Koundouriotis mansion is one of the finest examples of the traditional 18th and 19th century architecture of Hydra.

It was built in 1780 by the Koundouriotis family, one of the most illustrious families of Hydra,and wonderfully restored in the 1990s.
Lazaros Koundouriotis was a ship owner who devoted himself entirely to the Greek Revolution against the Turkish yoke, using its ship and its fortune to finance and help the independence war.His young brother, George, helped him in his donation and battle and his grandson, Pavlos, became the first president of the modern Greek State in 1924.
The beautiful mansion was donated by Lazaros great-grandson, Pantelis Koundouriotis, to the Historical and Ethnological Society of Greece in 1979.

The built was restored and the three levels were transformed into exhibition areas where relics from the Koundouriotis family are exposed as well as various items from the historical and folklore collections of the National Historical Museum of Athens, such as traditional costumes, jewellery, fine embroideries, pottery and wood-carvings; the Koundouriotis Mansion operates as an annexe of the Historical Museum of Athens exhibits a rich collection of old photographs, maps, dolls, traditional costumes, hand-woven items, house utensils and a traditional olive press.

In the basement house, three rooms exhibit a superb collectionof paintings made by Periklis Vyzantinos and his son.

3) The Byzantine Museum

The Byzantine Museum of Hydra is housed in a renovated, decorated monk’s cell, in the old Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin (Kimissis tis Theotokou), located on Hydra Town and recognisable from its beautiful high marble bell tower.

It is a small museum exhibiting a collection of ecclesiastical relics and items dating from the 18th and 19th century, such as fine icons and frescoes, embroideries, holy vessels and vestments, ecclesiastical utensils and magnificent ornate Gospel covers.

4)The Cathedral museum

One of the interesting places that to visit in Hydra, is the Cathedral Museum or the Ecclesiastic Museum.

This museum is located in the center of the port. This cathedral was originally built in 1648 and was rebuilt in 1774. It also operated as a monastery at one point. Now, the Town Hall as well the museum is located in the temple part of this cathedral.

This museum has been in existence since 1933. Here, you will find jewels and documents of historical value. Occasionally there are exhibits held that reflects Hydra’s nautical history.

5)School of Art in Hydra

To the east side of the town of Hydra is located the School of Arts. It is housed to the Manor of Tompazi, since 1936.

The painter Periklis Vizantios (1893 - 1971), with the ex-manager of the School of Art, in 1936, created the today's School of Art that is housed to the Manor of Admiral Tompazi.

There had been stayed most importand personalities of the Art and Literature, like Chagall and the writer Daninos.

6)The National Merchant Marine Academy

The National Merchant Marine Academy is the first Marine Academy in Greece and proud successor of the Greece marine tradition.

The Academy started to operate in 1749. At first it was a school with the name "Saint Nikolaos" and from the 1800 it operated as Merchant Marine Academy of Hydra with initiative from the eldership of the island.

In the years before the revolution, foreign teachers from Portugal and Italy mostly, were teaching naval theory and foreign lanquages in to the Academy.

In 1927 was established in Hydra private Naval College under the protection of the naval Society of Hydra.

In 1930 was established from the state the National Merchant Marine Academy as we know it today.

From 1930 the Academy is situated to the Manor where Anastasios Tsamados and Athanasios Koulouras used to live. It is bestowed to the State exclusively for the operation of the Academy.

During the second world war and until 1948 the Acxademy had outliers to Athens and Peiraeus.

The first educational boat of the Academy was called "Saint George" of the fisherman Tsigaris, the second was called "Electra" and the third one "Eugene Eugenidis".

Since 1989 the institute of interchangeable education has been applied.

According to this, the naval cadets are traveling with containers ships and they get paid for that. The apprenticeship in the Academy is four years. From the Academy have already gratuated 2.800 captains.

7) The Bastions with Cannons

On the Greek island of Hydra the bastions with cannons that were used for the protection of the harbor in due time war, can still be seen. During the 18th century, Hydra was in need of these cannons to protect the Island from the attacks of the Turkish fleet. The Greek ships were equipped with eight to twenty guns when on the Turkish frigate had up to eighty guns and a Turkish corvette ship up to thirty.

The Turkish fleet was superior quantitatively to the Greek so Hydra needed its cannons, in case they managed to get past the Greek ships. In the 19th century there was a probability for Hydra to use its cannons again, as the Greeks were at war with the Turks.

Fortunately, the Greek fleet had always managed to protect Hydra, and as a result, the cannons have not been often in use. The bastions with cannons seemed to be a necessary precaution in case Hydra actually got attacked. You can still see them today on the left and right side of the Harbor.

WHEN TO VISIT HYDRA?

Most of its visitors just come for the day because there are simply not enough places for them to stay. If you do want to stay overnight, or over many nights, (which we recommend), then you should book a hotel in advance during the summer because if you wait you won't find one. Because of its proximity to Athens it is the perfect island to visit in the way-off season. There are usually people there, especially during weekends, including the odd writer or poet wintering on the island in search of inspiration. Not far enough away to feel like you are cut off from society, the beat goes on into the winter. And if you get stir-crazy or if the weather gets nasty you can hightail it back to the nightlife of Athens.

MIAOULIA FESTIVAL (end of June)

Even though the island is overcrowded at that time, a MUST SEE of Hydra is a big festival, called Miaoulia. It takes place in Hydra the weekend closest to the 21st June, to honor Admiral Miaoulis, a most important man of the Greek Revolution in 1821.
The festival lasts for three days and it is a part of the "Navy Week".

Miaoulia come to its closure with fireworks and the representation of the burning of the turkish flagship the last day of the festival. (superb experience)

It's extremely difficult to find a room in a hotel that particular weekend, so if you don't want to miss the Miaoulia Festival, you would have to book at least 3 months in advance!
