MEXICANAL Television Network Debuts in Las Vegas

KTNV-TV and Cox Digital will bring Hispanic programming to viewers in the market

Las Vegas, Nev. — Journal Broadcast Group Vice Chairman and CEO Doug Kiel announced today that MEXICANAL Television Network, based in Mexico, is debuting in Las Vegas on KTNV-TV digital channel 13-2 and on Cox Channel 121.

"We're proud to be one of the first stations in the U.S. to offer this new Mexico-based programming service to viewers and advertisers," Kiel said. "With the dramatic Latino population growth in Las Vegas, we believe this will become a favorite channel in many Hispanic households. Not only will it serve an important segment of the community, but it will allow us to offer a unique opportunity in helping advertisers grow their businesses by reaching a very specific target audience."

As part of the multicasting agreement that Journal Broadcast Group signed with the MEXICANAL Television Network in March, the company will also broadcast the Network's programming on digital stations in the Boise, Palm Springs, Calif., and Tucson markets. Those debuts on the digital channels for KIVI-TV, KMIR-TV and KGUN-TV, respectively, will happen later this year. In Las Vegas, viewers need to subscribe to Cox Digital Cable or have a television set capable of receiving digital television broadcasts in order to receive MEXICANAL.

The MEXICANAL Network is a Mexico-based channel that targets Mexicans living and working in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Its lineup features a dynamic range of Spanish-language content encompassing news, culturally significant programs, sports, and popular entertainment from public broadcasters, independent producers and local access stations throughout Mexico.

MEXICANAL Network's owners, Cablecom and Castalia Communications, recognized the need for programming from numerous regions throughout Mexico because the majority of Mexicans living in the U.S. come from places other than Mexico City. Signing programming affiliations with broadcasters from different states allows MEXICANAL Network to provide precisely that kind of programming.

The program lineup features the Network's very own daily half-hour news program, "MX24 Noticias" (MX24 News), covering the top national and international news; "De Kiosko en Kiosko," in which host Cornelio Garcia visits different municipalities in Jalisco to explore their culture, customs and traditions; "Al Dia Tu Casa," a daily magazine show; "Reportajes de Alvarado," hosted by Eduardo Alvarado from different towns of Nuevo Leon; and "Experidivertido," an educational show for children. The channel also produces a number of specials throughout the year, including "El Grito de Independencia" (The Cry of Independence) and "El Dia de Muertos" (Day of the Dead).

Jaguares have announced their participation in Amnesty International's upcoming Small Places Tour. A hugely popular Rock group from Mexico City, Jaguares will lend their talent and energy once again to Amnesty's current campaign, which coincides with the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

Through media interviews, ads, concerts, college visits, and community forums throughout the Americas, Jaguares will encourage audiences to join Aliados con Amnesty, a group of activists engaged in promoting human rights for Latinos that's the fastest-growing network of Amnesty International members. The band will also participate in activism events hosted by Amnesty Aliados volunteers, and will include information about the organization with the release of their new album "45" on September 2nd.

The Small Places Tour is unique in that artists worldwide can participate, just like Jaguares, to raise funds and awareness by performing benefit concerts, offering premium-seating packages, or auctioning off meet & greets and other unique fan experiences between September 10 and December 10. The proceeds will go towards Amnesty's UDHR 60 campaigns, which include putting a stop to torture, demanding the closure of Guantanamo, ending the killing in Darfur, preventing violence against women, protesting China's actions in Tibet, and working for the release of Aung San Sui Kyi in Burma.

For nearly half a century, Amnesty International has been fighting the good fight on behalf of the underdog and the oppressed. Tempe, AZ - The Mexican celebration of the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) has its origins in Pre-Colombian times. The Aztecs conceived of death as part of one cycle that was constant like the seasons of nature. This year the Calaca Cultural Center will incorporate individual, community and humanistic historical landmarks to celebrate Dia de los Muertos. This year¹s theme is ³Notes from the Past,² a historical remembrance and use of symbolic images, icons, objects, expressions and art, a way to tell a story and commemorate the celebration of life. This is a great opportunity to remember and pay tribute to the pieces of history in one¹s life.

Call for Altars: Artists and community members are invited to participate. Altars can be made by individuals or groups. If you are interested in participating, you must notify us by September 21st. Austin picks Californian to lead police department

AUSTIN — The city of Austin has chosen Art Acevedo, a California Highway

Patrol assistant chief, as its next police chief, the city manager said.

Acevedo, 42, will be the first minority police chief for an agency

that's under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice for

complaints of police using excessive force against minorities.

A formal announcement of Acevedo's selection was scheduled for Thursday.

City Manager Toby Futrell said officials were impressed with Acevedo's

support from his Los Angeles community. More than 60 people, including

patrol officers and community leaders, turned out to endorse Acevedo

when Austin officials traveled to Los Angeles.

"We heard very specific examples of how he has worked community issues,

solved policing problems for small businesses and worked with youth

issues in the community," Futrell said.

Police Association have supported Acevedo's bid for the job, Futrell said.

"If you can find common ground between all these groups, that is what

we've been looking for," she said.

Austin community groups have commended Acevedo's experience dealing with

a large city and a strong union, and his ability to speak Spanish.

Acevedo's career in Los Angeles County included work as a patrol

officer, sergeant and assistant chief.

As sergeant, he helped investigate officers accused of misconduct. As an

assistant chief, he helped coordinate security for several large

demonstrations and led his agency's response to a series of freeway

shootings in 2005.

"I guarantee in the weeks and months to come, the community and leaders

will know their chief," Acevedo said during a recent community meeting

in Austin for chief finalists. "I have a very open-door policy."

Bishop Edward Turner, director of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's

Department Clergy Council, credited Acevedo with easing tensions between

Hispanics and blacks in the community by organizing conferences where

the two groups could hash out their differences.

"He's a very hardworking, articulate individual who gets things done

when people need help," said Daniel Schulist, chairman of the East Los

Angeles Community Youth Center.
