EGFR trafficking dysregulation in human tumours

We are using biochemistry, cell biology and fluorescence imaging techniques to investigate the dysregulation of EGFR trafficking in patient squamous cell carcinoma tumors and how this correlates to their treatment with anti-EGFR inhibitors.

Genetic control of regulatory T cell function in type 1 diabetes
Dr Emma Hamilton-Williams (e.hamiltonwilliams@uq.edu.au)

Regulatory T cells (Tregs) are the suppressors of the immune system, capable of shutting down pathogenic autoreactive T cell responses. This project will use cell-based assays and multi-colour flow cytometry to analyse how Treg function is altered by the type 1 diabetes susceptibility genes interleukin-2 and CTLA-4.

Understanding genetic variation in gene expression and gene methylation
Prof Peter Visscher (peter.visscher@uq.edu.au)

A numerate student with some analysis and/or computer programming skills is invited to join the complex trait genomics group to investigate how genetic differences between people influence gene expression and gene methylation collected from blood samples. This is a dry-lab computer based project that will suit a student wishing to advance their knowledge of genomics using exciting data.

Exploring the interaction between vaccine-induced T-cells and tumour-antigen-bearing skin cells

Most cancer patients show evidence of cancer-specific immune activation, however for reasons that we don’t yet fully understand these immune responses don’t actually go on to attack the tumour once generated. This project will use immunological techniques such as flow cytometry to identify how cells present in the tumour site might impact on normal immune cell function.

UQDI International PhD Scholarships at University of Queensland

Background: The University of Queensland Diamantina Institute (UQDI) was established in 2007 as the sixth research institute of The University of Queensland. The aim of the Institute is to develop a better understanding of the molecular and cellular basis of disease, and to translate that understanding into practical outcomes for patients. Based at the Princess Alexandra Hospital teaching campus in Brisbane, the Institute has almost 200 researchers and students who work closely with clinicians in the areas of cancer, immunology and genomic medicine. UQDI is undergoing an exciting period of expansion in preparation for its relocation into the Translational Research Institute (TRI) at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in late 2012 and is thus looking to recruit a number of high calibre PhD students.

The TRI will be one of the southern hemisphere's largest facilities of its kind, and will be one of only a few places worldwide where new biopharmaceuticals and treatments can be researched, discovered, manufactured, and clinically tested in one location. The Translational Research Institute - ‘translating laboratory success into benefits for patients’ - is a major step forward in growing Australia’s research capacity. The TRI building will house up to 900 researchers and support staff. State of the art facilities will include physical containment level 2 (PC2) and level 3 (PC3) laboratories, a vivarium, a Cell Therapies clean room facility, staff support spaces, a large lecture theatre and advanced education facilities. The associated and adjacent biopharmaceuticals facility will house a pilot drug manufacturing facility to bring discoveries to pilot commercialisation.

UQDI will be the largest partner in TRI, and is building major programs in Immunology, Cancer and Genomic Medicine research, with a particular focus on research aimed at development of new treatments. UQDI itself is an extremely well equipped translational biomedical research institute, with outstanding facilities for research in animal models of disease including cutting-edge imaging technologies, human cell and molecular biology research in cancer and immunology, and genomics research, housing the largest sequencing/genotyping facility in Australasia. Its close affiliation with clinical units at Princess Alexandra Hospital provides it with a significant strategic advantage in near-patient, translational research. Flinders International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (FIPRS) at Flinders University

BACKGROUND
Flinders International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (FIPRS) are awarded to international students on the basis of academic merit, academic research training and research indicators and performance. The scholarships enable suitably qualified applicants to commence a full-time research higher degree.
The scholarship is tenable for up to three years for a Research Doctorate degree and up to two years for a Research Masters degree. Successful applicants are required to undertake full time study.
Applicants for the FIPRS will be automatically considered for the International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS).
BENEFITS
The FIPRS pays the international student tuition fees charged by Flinders University for a research higher degree. In addition, Flinders University provides the recipient with a generous living allowance paid at the rate of $23,728 per annum (2012 rate). It is tax exempt and indexed annually. An FIPRS student who moves to Adelaide from overseas is eligible for an establishment allowance (after arrival at Flinders) of up to $1,485 to assist with relocation costs and airfares, provided receipts can be produced by the student.
ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must be a citizen of any overseas country, except New Zealand, and, satisfy the University's academic entry requirements for a Masters degree by research or Doctorate by research, including the English proficiency levels set by Flinders University for international students. Students for whom English is a foreign language will need to provide evidence of their English language competence. Applicants must not hold an equivalent research higher degree qualification. Introduction

The International Development Scholarship in association with International Students House (ISH) is a combined tuition fee, residential and maintenance scholarship offered to an international student from a developing country, who intends to make a positive contribution to the development of their home country as result of completing the MSc NGO and Development Management Programme, who would otherwise be unable to pursue the Programme for financial reasons.
The Scholarship will be offered annually and is the product of a partnership between International Students House, one of London's largest residences for International Students, and the University of East London, a global learning community with over 28,000 students from over 120 countries world-wide.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the International Development Scholarship, applicants must:

Conditions of Scholarship

The University at its sole discretion reserves the right to allocate and administer the scholarship award as appropriate and conditions may be subject to change.

The scholar must enrol on the MSc NGO and Development Management Programme for the intake stated on their Scholarship Offer Letter. The Scholarship cannot be deferred.
The scholar must comply with the terms and conditions of admittance and the University's Regulations, including our Attendance Policy. Where there is a failure to comply then the scholarship award may be withdrawn in whole or part.
The scholar will be expected to complete their programme of study successfully within the time frame outlined on their Scholarship Offer Letter. The scholarship award does not cover additional costs for any re-takes of module/s.
The scholar will be expected to participate in current and future promotional activities and as such will be interviewed and photographed by the UEL marketing department. The scholar will also contribute from time to time to the promotion of UEL by supporting events organised for scholars and events organised by the International Office. The scholar agrees no payment will be made by the University to the scholar for their participation in promotional activities.
The scholar assigns to the University any intellectual property or other rights which are created as part of the promotional material.
Scholars will be expected to donate up to 10 hours per month of service to ISH or UEL International in some way, such as representing ISH at events.
Accommodation is a single occupancy room in ISH halls of residence. It will be the scholar's responsibility to accept the room offer within the specified time frame. The award will not cover any alternative accommodation and no payment in lieu will be made where the ISH single occupancy room is not occupied. Scholars are not expected to bring family members to the UK, by nature of the eligibility criteria with regards to financial hardship.
Food will be provided for up to 12 months. The scholar will be provided with a ‘top up card’ for meals at ISH. All additional meals are to be paid for using the monthly subsistence allowance. No payment will be made in lieu of food vouchers that are not used.
The scholar will be provided with £450 per month for subsistence, for up to 12 months, to cover travel, meals at UEL and other living expenses.
Return flights to the UK from the scholar’s country of residence will be booked by UEL. Flights for the return journey will be booked for within a month of the programme end date.

Tier 4 (General) Student Visa

Where necessary under UK Border Agency (UKBA) regulations, scholars will be required to apply for prior entry clearance (Tier 4 General Student). Student immigration requirements for entry into the UK are operated on a points based system. Scholars must ensure that they meet all the requirements for entry within their application, in line with the UKBA’s Tier 4 Policy Guidance. Scholars should only proceed with their acceptance of the award if they are confident that they meet these requirements. A letter will be provided to the scholar by UEL for use in the Tier 4 application process, as evidence of maintenance. The scholarship award will not be made, or if made will be withdrawn where a Tier 4 student visa is not granted, or is subsequently withdrawn.

How and when to apply

Assessment Procedure

Applications will be assessed according to merit and financial need by a selected panel at the University of East London and International Students House. The panel may request to interview applicants over the telephone. Candidates who are selected for interview will be notified of this by telephone and email.
The panel will make their final selections by marking the quality of the application and interview (where applicable), the preparedness for the high quality study in the discipline area, the articulation of how the Scholarship will contribute to the applicant’s study goals, personal development and long term career gains in making a positive contribution to the development of their home country.

Notification of Scholarship Outcome

The successful applicant will be notified by telephone and email by 30th July 2012. They will then be sent an award letter which may be required for visa purposes. The award letter will be posted to the correspondence address on your application form. You must inform us (by emailing admissions.international@uel.ac.uk) if your contact details change so that we can contact you at the correct address.
The scholar will receive an acceptance form with their award letter and this must be returned by email. If you do not consent to the terms and conditions of the scholarship, it will have to be withdrawn.

4. Do I need to submit my IELTS/TOEFL scores?
All applicants are required to provide evidence of English language level. If your application to the Programme is successful you will receive an offer letter from the International Admissions team, stating the evidence you are required to provide if required. 5. My IELTS/TOEFL scores will be declared after July 13, can I still apply for the scholarship?
For the International Development Scholarship you must have an unconditional offer (with no academic conditions) to be considered. Evidence of English language is a requirement of admission to the MSc NGO and Development Management Programme. As the Scholarship is for entry in September 2012, the scholarship applications will need to be assessed immediately after the deadline on 13 July 2012. You therefore must ensure that all academic conditions have been met by 13th July 2012.
6. Is the Scholarship for any other programme?
No. The International Development Scholarship is open to applicants with an offer for our MSc NGO and Development Management Programme only. However, applicants with an offer for another Master’s programme may be eligible for one of our other international scholarships. Please note, however, that these are only partial scholarships.

London Met Postgraduate Scholarship

Background:

Students who hold an unconditional offer for one of our postgraduate degree programmes and who pay international tuition fees may apply for a scholarship.
You can't apply for a scholarship unless you have applied for a course and been given an unconditional offer to study at London Met
(current continuing students are the only exception to this rule).

The scholarship programme provides full and partial tuition fee financial support for students on taught Masters degree programmes.

Applicants are judged on academic merit and on the likely economic/social benefit to their home country of them doing a Masters degree in the UK.
(This must be clearly demonstrated in the personal statement that the above criteria are met).

Evidence of paid and/or voluntary work done should also be included in the scholarship application, where applicable.

· Applications for London Met scholarships are reviewed twice yearly (in June and November) by a panel of academic staff at the University.

Leigh Marine Climate Time-Series Data Scholarship

The Scholarship was established in 2011 and is funded by the Friends of Leigh.

The main purpose of the Scholarship is to support a postgraduate research masters or doctoral student in Marine Science to undertake analysis of marine climate time-series data based on a 45 year dataset collected at Leigh Marine Laboratory.

Selection process:

Masters or PhD candidate in full-time enrolment in a Masters or PhD in Marine Science to study climate time-series data.
The basis of selection will be academic merit, a CV and a covering letter including a statement of interest in this research area. Preference will be given to candidates with strengths in statistics, mathematics and/or bioinformatics who have an understanding of climate and ecological sciences.

Decision makers
The Scholarship will be awarded by the University of Auckland Council upon the recommendation of a Selection Committee comprising the Director and Postgraduate Adviser (or their nominees) of the Department of Marine Sciences and one other member of the academic staff (appointed by the Director).

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
The Scholarship may not be held concurrently with a University of Auckland Masters/Honours/PG Diploma Scholarship but may be concurrently held with The University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship or with any other award or grant as long as a) the terms of that award or grant permit and b) the University of Auckland Council is informed and approves.

The Adelaide International Undergraduate Scholarships (AIUS)

The University of Adelaide offers four targeted scholarship programs for commencing international students undertaking undergraduate study. All scholarships in this program have the following conditions:

Available for commencing international students only;
Study in any discipline except Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), Bachelor of Oral Health and the Bachelor of Science (Pre-Veterinary);
Benefits are the waiver of full tuition fees for the normal duration of the program, subject to satisfactory performance, up to a maximum of four years;
A scholarship recipient completing a three year degree program who is offered a further year in the Honours Program may apply for an extension of the scholarship to cover that year; and
Scholarships are available only for the first four years of a double degree.

Application process

The application process is different for each targeted scholarship program. Please read the information below carefully:

For students seeking a scholarship for undergraduate study, a separate online application process for scholarships is required.
Students wishing to apply for a scholarship should lodge their application for admission several weeks before the scholarship application closing date.
Applicants for the AIUS – general will be required to have already received a current unconditional offer of admission to the University of Adelaide to be considered for a scholarship.
Students with a conditional offer of admission must have demonstrated that they meet all the conditions of their offer, and have received acknowledgement from the International Office that their offer is unconditional, before lodging an application for a scholarship.
Students completing Foundation Studies programs at Bradford or Eynesbury Colleges do not need to apply online. The results will be forwarded to us by the Colleges.

Deadlines

As an unconditional offer of admission is required for the scholarship application, students wishing to apply for a scholarship should make an early application for admission to the University several weeks prior to the scholarship application closing date.

Under the CSC-AIT Scholarship Program, CSC will offer annually 10 scholarships covering, as prescribed by the Chinese Central Government, pure tuition fee, registration fee and research fee, living stipend (health insurance included) and a return international airfare to China by the most economical route, as well as visa application fee.

CSC and AIT will support the following areas of study with priority: Engineering, Technology, and Management.

1. Entry Criteria

(1) Candidates will be citizens and permanent residents of the People’s Republic of China at the time of application;

(2) Candidates must not be currently working or studying abroad;

(3) The awardees must return to China upon their completion of their studies and/or research;

(4) Candidates are encouraged to obtain information about admission requirement and admission procedure directly from AIT. Doctoral candidates must receive a written confirmation from AIT that an AIT faculty member is available and willing to supervise them.

(5) Candidates should be intending to pursue study/research in one of the priority academic areas identified by AIT and CSC. However, applicants to other study/research areas will also be considered. The academic areas are also subject to the availability of relevant programs of study at AIT.

(6) Candidate should satisfy the selection criteria set out by CSC by completing the CSC Application Form and the CSC Employer Reference Form at http://apply.csc.edu.cn/.

2. The Timetable for 2012

(1) By January 31, AIT will provide to CSC its students application forms (http://www.ait.ac.th/admissions/forms.html), a list of all required documents for application and keep CSC informed with the deadline for applications.

(2) February 20-25, CSC will make an announcement to all relevant universities/institutes of China about this Program and present them the CSC eligible criteria for CSC Scholarship and the AIT application forms.

(3) February 26 – March 15, all applicants submit their applications online and send the required documents to CSC.

(4) April 5 -April 15, CSC will go through all application and send by post mail to AIT a list of applicants who meet the requirements together with their application documents.

(5) Mid April – May, AIT will go through all application documents and keep CSC informed with the final results by the end of May, together with the Offer Letter for all qualified applicants.

(6) June, CSC will help to deliver hard copies of AIT Offer letters to all the qualified applicants.

(7) August, selected applicants by CSC and AIT should arrive at AIT for orientation and necessary procedures; for the doctoral applicants, they can also be enrolled in January’s semester.

(8) August 7- 9, Arrival / Pre-registration.

(9) August 10, Institute Wide Registration/ New Student’s Orientation.

(10) August 15, Classes begin.

(11) August 22, Last day for adding or dropping courses.

(12) September 10, AIT will provide formal invoices for tuition fee and registration fee to CSC through the First Secretary (Education) of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Thailand while the latter will remit all the corresponding tuition and registration fees to the bank account of AIT.

For the years 2013 and 2014, the time table and work plan should be similar to the year 2012. However, AIT and CSC will inform each other of any changes to this timetable and workplan.

The funding for each PHD program awardee will be up to 36 months.
The funding for each Master degree program awardee will be up to 24 months.

In order to distinguish that the candidate is applying for admission with scholarship under the present Program, the application should be indicated by writing “CSC/AIT”

ADB-JAPAN SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

I. TERMS OF AWARDS

Scholarships are for a period of one to two years and are awarded at designated institutions (DIs) in the Asia and Pacific region. Studies in economics, business and management, science and technology and other development-related fields are eligible. The maximum duration of scholarship award is two years for the MA, MS, & MBA Program. In cases where a PhD program is approved, the duration is also two years.

Remarks: Government of Japan has made clear that it would support only up to 2 years, consistent whith similar assistance that it is coursing through other international development institutions.

A. Renewal of Scholarships

1. The initial scholarship period is one year. An appropriate extension for the second year of study shall be conditional on the scholar's maintaining a satisfactory level of performance as determined by the DI.

2. Extension of scholarships will not be allowed, in principle, beyond the two-year period.

3. Scholarships maybe suspended for a maximum of twelve months or two semesters, if deemede necessary for valid reasons such as health or family reasons.

4. The total number of scholarship awards is reviewed and set yearly by ADB. Within the total number of scholars, ADB will approve new scholars based upon the recommendation of DIs when incumbent scholars complete studies or withdraw their scholarships.

B. Deferment of Awards

1. Deferment of awards may be granted for up to a maximum of six months or one semester, at the discretion of the DI. The DI should submit the request for deferral to the ADB. Deferrals maybe approve for valid reasons, including pregnancy, unresolved family issues, or failure to obtain a visa. If a student cannot take upt the offer within one year after the year for which it is awarded, he/she has to reapply for the scholarship.

C. Replacement of Dropouts

1. Replacement of scholars who have dropped from the Program is not allowed during the academic year.

D. Transfer of Scholarships

1. A transfer from one course of study to another, or to another institution, is not allowed.

E. Special Conditions

1. In accepting the ADB-JSP scholarship, scholars should commit themselves to return to, and work in their home countries for a period of at least 2 years after completion of their studies.

2. In accepting the ADB-JSP scholarship, scholars consent to the employment restriction policy of the ADB-JSP and acknowledge that they will not be able to work at ADB for two years after completion of their academic programs.

F. Termination of Scholarships

1. Scholarships maybe terminated upon the recommendation of the DI, at anytime, for failure to make satisfactory academic progress, failure to comply with the laws of the host country (location of DI), misconduct, or breaches of the conditions of the ADB-JSP or the student visa.

II. SELECTION

A. Eligibility Requirements:

1. A national of an ADB borrowing member country (applicants from countries that are no longer borrowing from ADB are not eligible for the ADB-JSP Scholarship).

2. Gained admission to an approved MA/PhD course at a DI.

3. A bachelor's degree or its equivalent with superior academic record.

4. At least two (2) years of full-time professional working experience (acquired after a university degree) at a time of application.

Proficiency in oral and written English communication skills to be able to pursue studies.

5. Not more than 35 years old at the time of application. In exceptional cases, for programs which are appropriate for senior officials and managers, the age limit is 45 years old.

6. In good health.

7. Should agree to return to his/her home county after completion of studies under the Program.

8. Executive Directors, Alternate Directors, management and staff of ADB, consultants, and relatives of the aforementioned are not eligible for the Scholarship.

9. Staff of DIs are not eligible for the Scholarship.

10. Applicants living or working in a country other than his/her home country are not eligible for the scholarships.

11. ADB-JSP does not support applicants who are already enrolled in graduate degree programs.

12. ADB-JSP does not sponsor undergraduate studies, distance learning programs, short-term training, conferences, seminars, thesis writing, and research projects.

B. Selection Criteria:

1. Priority to the ranking, or order of merit, proposed by the DIs.

2. Applicants with less than two years of work experience will not be selected.

3. Preference to women candidates.

4. Preference to applicants with lesser financial capacity. Family income should be not more than USD50, 000 per year and individual income should not be more than USD25,000 per year.

5. The Program will, in principle, not support applicants who have previously studied abroad.

6. The Program will, in principle, not support applicants who are pursuing a second MA or a second PhD degree.

7. Candidates who are applying at a DI in their own country may not be selected.

8. Diversification of nationality in the overall Program as well as at each DI level will be considered.

9. The Program encourages studies in line with core areas of ADB's Strategy 2020, which address poverty reduction through infrastructure, environment, regional cooperation and integration, finance sector develpment, and education. Strategry 2020, ADB's strategy, sets ADB's strategic course for its operations to the year 2020. For more details, please refer to the website:

C. Procedures for Applying:

1. Applicants should request information and application forms from the chosen DI. Applicants are encouraged to access various resources, including the DI's website & handbooks, and DI information sessions held in-country, to assist them in making an informed decision on the DI and course they wish to undertake.

2. Applicants should indicate to the DI that they are applying for admission and that they would like to be considered for the ADB-JSP Scholarship. The completed DI application form and required documentation, including the ADB-JSP Information Sheet form, should be submitted to the DI. Applicants must ensure that they submit accurate and complete documentation. Failure to do so may result in an application not being processed or to an award being terminated if documentation or information provided is later determined to be false. Applicants are required to submit their latest Income Tax Return or Certification of their Annual Salary/Monthly Salary, whichever is available. They should also submit a Certification of Family Income (Parent's Income/Spouse if married).

3. The DI will screen and rank the applicants, based on its own selection criteria, keeping in view the eligibility requirements and selection criteria of the ADB. In the evaluation process, the DI may contact the candidates for further information. The DI will then submit its ranked list of applicants to ADB, including a description of the score/grading system which is the basis for the ranking.

4. ADB will review the submission from the DIs and recommend awardees based on the selection criteria of ADB to the Executive Director of Japan for formal approval.

5. Upon approval by the Executive Director of Japan, ADB will advise DIs on the successful candidates.

6. The DI will inform all applicants of the outcome of the selection process and begin to make arrangements for the awardees take up their scholarships.

7. The DIs will arrange for the signing of the Acceptance of Scholarship Award by awardee wherein the scholars agree that after completion of their study, they will return to their home country.

8. ADB will send an appropriate congratulatory letter to each scholar.

III. THE SCHOLARSHIP

A. Coverage

1. Tuition fees (actual costs)

2. Housing (based on actual cost of dormitory housing or a reasonable allowance for appropriate off campus housing—to be agreed upon between each DI and ADB).

3. Subsistence Allowance (a flat allowance to be agreed upon between each DI and ADB).

4. Student Medical and accident insurance (actual costs).

5. Books (a flat allowance to be agreed upon between each DI and ADB).

6. Economy class air travel at most direct route to and from the DI and the awardee’s home country (actual costs).

7. Miscellaneous expenses related to travel such as visa fees, airport taxes, luggage allowance, etc. (a flat allowance).

8. Excess luggage up to 20 kgs may be financed during return travel to the home country (actual costs).

9. Thesis/Research Allowance is intended to cover the scholar's research expenditures and can be used for such expenditure items as photocopying, school supplies, typing and computer charges, postage, communications, binding charges, local travel costs and accommodation for out-of-town trips. (a flat allowance)

10. Scholars are expected to have sufficient skills in language and computer to undertake their study program. However, in special cases where additional training is deemed necessary, expenditures incurred to improve language proficiency and computer literacy may be covered under the scholarship (actual costs).

11. The ADB-JSP does not cover: expenses for the scholar family; extra-curricular courses or training; additional travel during the course of study program; additional expenses related to supplementary educational materials, field trips, or participation in workshops, seminars, or internships while at the DI or purchase of educational equipment such as computers.

B. Policies and Procedures

1. The ADB-JSP Scholarship is for the scholar only and does not cover expenses for the scholar's dependents.

2. DIs are encouraged to provide tuition fee discounts to outstanding scholars, as agreed with ADB.

3. Preparatory/bridging courses, such as English proficiency or computer literacy courses, can be funded by ADB-JSP. These courses should be undertaken within the DI.

4. Expenses relating to activities not directly related to the pursuit of the degree, such as attendance in a conference and other similar activities, are not financed under the ADB-JSP.

5. Subsistence allowances are normally given to the scholars at the beginning of each month. However, DIs may disburse allowances according to their practice.

6. For expenses related to air travels, DIs should provide ADB with a copy of the scholars’ air tickets from their home countries to DIs. Return travel is paid upon successful completion of studies.

7. An establishment allowance may be provided to new scholars to help with initial costs of setting up their temporary home at the DI. This is paid only once at the start of the scholarship (a flat allowance).

8. The ADB-JSP scholarship only supplements, and does not duplicate, any other source of financial support/fellowship the scholar might have. Scholars must inform the ADB-JSP if they have other sources of scholarships funds. The ADB-JSP stipend maybe withdrawn completely or partially if during the scholarship period the program has evidence of additional sources of support.

For the August 2012 intake, the DAAD is going to offer up to eight scholarships for applicants from CLMV countries to pursue a Master's degree at the AIT. The scholarship award covers tuition and other academic fees, and living allowances for a 22-month program. The scholarships value is THB 937,800 per scholarship holder, divided in THB 480,400 for the first year of studies (12 months) and THB 457,400 for the second and last year (10 months). Application deadline is 15 April 2012.

The Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst - German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Asian Institute of Technology ( AIT ) have agreed to strengthen national and institutional capacity of DAAD priority countries, namely Cambodia , Lao PDR , Myanmar and Vietnam through the offering of the DAAD- AIT Scholarships .

DAAD is one of the world's largest and most respected intermediary organizations in its field. Scores of students, teachers, researchers and scientists supported by DAAD have been able to gain valuable experience abroad. DAAD supports and promotes all areas relating to science, research, language, teaching and others.

The Asian Institute of Technology , on the other hand, is an international post graduate institute founded in 1959, and is Asia's pioneer institution established to help meet the region's growing needs for advanced learning in engineering, science, technology and management, research and capacity building. AIT 's mission is to develop highly qualified and committed professionals who will play a leading role in the sustainable development of the region and its integration into the global economy. AIT is based in Thailand and has affiliated centers in the region.

APPLICATION PROCESS, CRITERIA AND SELECTION FOR DAAD SCHOLARSHIP

To qualify, applicants must:

1) Be a bonafide national of Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar or Vietnam.
2) Applicants should be not more than 28 years of age when applying.
3) They are requested to hold a Bachelor degree with a minimum GPA of 3.00/4.00 (or equivalent).
4) Additionally a TOEFL of at least 550 (paper based) or 213 (computer based) or IELTS of at least 6.0 is mandatory. DAAD does not accept institutional TOEFL reports.
5) Prospective applicants will apply directly to AIT.
6) In addition to AIT's application package, the applicant is to submit a CV (typed, 2 pages at most) and a letter of motivation for the master's study.

Notes:

1) AIT shall forward the eligible application dossiers (pre-selected according to DAAD/ AIT requirements) to DAAD along with a list of applicants ranked according to AIT criteria by May 2012.
2) The final decision will be taken by DAAD screening committee. The successful candidates will receive an official DAAD Letter of Award as soon as all formal requirements for admission and enrollment at AIT have been met.

Students from developing Asian nations are offered the chance to pursue their master's or doctoral studies in fields relating to sustainable development at one of Asia's leading postgraduate institutions.

The scholarships

The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Asian Institute of Technology have partnered to offer a program called “Education for Sustainable Development” from 2009 to 2013. Master's and doctoral scholarships will be provided to students from countries in South and Southeast Asia – Myanmar, Afghanistan , Bangladesh , Bhutan, East Timor, Nepal and Sri Lanka – the Mekong region low-income countries of Lao PDR and Cambodia.
The scholarships cover degree programs in fields relevant to sustainable environment, human rights and gender, and poverty alleviation. The core idea of the scholarships is to support Norwegian program countries in Asia with emphasis on sustainable development for enhancing institutional capacity building.
Details
• Scholarship recipients will be selected according to AIT's admission criteria, rules and regulations to ensure that the most suitable candidates are admitted based on an assessment of the needs of the nominating agencies in the Norwegian program countries.
• At least half of the scholarships will be offered to women candidates.
• Priority will be given to candidates nominated by project partners in the Norwegian MFA-AIT program countries.
• After successful completion of graduate studies and professional training in AIT, the scholarship recipients are obliged to return to their home countries for strengthening institutional capacities and contributing in building sustainable societies.
• Recipients are required to conduct thesis research on topics relevant to their respective home country's development needs incorporating gender, environment and sustainable development concerns.
• Scholarships provide grants for conducting thesis research.
• Both traditional and flexible master's programs are available. The flexible master's program enables students to pursue their studies while carrying out professional duties in their home countries. Preference will be given to staff of public sector agencies, government departments, training institutions and universities.
• Doctoral scholarships are available only to candidates from teaching and research institutions including national universities on the broad theme of sustainable development as a part of the institutional capacity-building process in the program countries. Applicants must provide a relevant research proposal and nomination from their employer as well as demonstrate a strong academic background and experience.

Applicants may apply to any field of study at AIT, but the program of study must be designed to focus on issues related to poverty alleviation, energy and sustainable environment, natural resources management, human rights and gender.

Background

Lingnan University offers scholarships to support outstanding non-local students to pursue full-time undergraduate studies at our University. Full Scholarship (covering tuition, hostel and partial academic and living expenses), Tuition Scholarship or Half-tuition Scholarship per academic year will be awarded to successful applicants.Each Scholarship is offered on an annual renewable basis and is tenable for a period of up to 3 or 4 years (depending on the curriculum), subject to continued outstanding academic performance.

Eligibility

Applicants are not required to indicate which curriculum (3-year or 4-year) they are applying. They will be considered and suitably admitted to the appropriate curriculum according to their education background and qualifications.

Non-local applicants (other than Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland citizens) should have attained at a recognised post-secondary institution outside Hong Kong an equivalent qualification to the Admission Requirements of the University, as stipulated below:

    • a degree, a sub-degree or a diploma awarded by a recognised post-secondary institution;
    • an International Baccalaureate Diploma;
    • High School Diploma plus minimum of 1650 on SAT I^;
   • satisfactory completion of the first year in a four-year undergraduate curriculum or the first year of a sub-degree programme of a recognised post-secondary institution;

The Prime Minister's Pacific-Australia Awards are part of the Australia Awards - Development Awards, an Australian Government initiative designed to promote knowledge, education links and enduring ties between Australia, our neighbours and the global community.

The PMPA Awards are fully funded by AusAID, the Australian Agency for International Development. The application should include:details of any community or university activities in which the applicant is involved either in Australia or their home country; work placement objectives (applicants are not required to name a prospective host organisation at the time of application); a statement outlining the relevance of the proposed work placement to the applicant's studies, the applicant's future career and the applicant's home organisation or country, inlcuding potential on-going relationship opportunities.
Applicants must also submit a CV. An academic transcript is not required at the time of application.

Australian Regional Development Scholarships provide opportunities to people from some developing countries to study at selected education institutions outside Australia. The purpose of the scholarships is for people to gain knowledge and skills which will help the development of their home country.

How are people selected for scholarships?

Applicants compete on their merit which includes academic achievement and other selection criteria. The selection criteria vary between countries and are developed jointly by the Australian and partner governments.
AusAID has a gender/equity policy (half of the scholarships are awarded to women and half to men).
To be eligible for a scholarship applicants must:

be a citizen of and a resident in the ARDS participating country
not have or be entitled to permanent residence in Australia; and not be married or engaged to be married to a person who holds or is eligible to hold Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residence status (unless their country does not issue passports - the Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau)
meet specific eligibility criteria imposed by the Government of the applicant's country of citizenship
satisfy host government's immigration requirements for regional students
not hold another scholarship during the period of the ARDS
not be transferring from another scholarship

Where can I study?

Currently Australian Regional Development Scholarships are offered to people from the Pacific to study at Pacific tertiary institutions in Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji and Samoa.

What can I study?

Australian Regional Development Scholarship students study a wide range of disciplines at selected education institutions in the Pacific region.
The scholarship numbers and fields of study for each country are determined annually as part of Australia's bilateral development assistance program with that country.
Some countries may limit the level of study (technical, undergraduate or postgraduate) and give priority to certain fields of study to better meet development needs.
Country specific information is available from the Australian Diplomatic Mission in the country of citizenship.

What is the length of scholarships?

The scholarships are offered for the minimum period that the individual could be expected to complete the academic program. Scholarships may include preparatory programs (including English language tuition) which are normally limited to one year.
Applicants considering studying for particular professions (eg medicine, legal studies, etc) should note that they are expected to complete their practical training in their own country. Only under exceptional circumstances do scholarships include a practical training period required for professional registration.

What are the scholarship conditions?

Applicants who are offered a scholarship will be asked to sign an undertaking declaring that they will comply with the conditions of that scholarship. Partner countries may impose their own conditions on the scholarship.
Conditions include:

studying full time and meeting all course requirements
not changing enrolment without the prior written approval of AusAID
making satisfactory academic progress
complying with restrictions on employment in the country of study
accepting that the scholarship may be withdrawn by the Australian Government
returning to the home country on completion of the scholarship
restrictions on returning to the country of study or travelling to Australia within 2 years of the completion of the scholarship
repaying the total amount of the scholarship if condition (f) or (g) are not adhered to

Do I get financial assistance while studying?

Scholarship entitlements vary between countries and institution of enrolment.
Generally entitlements cover a return airfare from your home country to the country of study, academic and other compulsory fees, an establishment allowance and a living allowance paid fortnightly.
In some countries the living allowance may be paid at a higher rate when the student is joined long term by one or more family members. No assistance is available with the airfares of family members.

The Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) Scholarships are supplementary to the Australian Development Scholarships (ADS).
Only 200 ALA Scholarships are available globally on an annual basis. Therefore, selection for an ALA Scholarship is highly competitive. It is based on a candidate's professional and personal qualities, academic achievement and, most importantly, their commitment to contribute to development outcomes for their country and region.
Awardees undertake a Leadership for Development Program which provides opportunities to enhance leadership capacity and extend networks while the scholars are in Australia.

How to apply for an ADS or ALA scholarship

 Check the open and close dates for your country, and select your country of citizenship/residency from the list of participating countries for specific information on eligibility, priority areas and how to apply. See the Participating country page for opening and closing dates.

 If you intend to apply, you must read the Scholarships handbook. The handbook provides information including general eligibility requirements, selection processes, entitlements and awardee responsibilities. Note that AusAID may revise and update the handbook at any time without notice.

 Some countries encourage and allow you to apply online (only open until 30 April 2012) while others require hard-copy applications. Applying online
Go to the Online Australian Scholarships Information System (OASIS) website. When you register online, you will be required to answer some questions to establish your eligibility. You will then be given a unique registration number, username and password.

You do not need to submit your application immediately. You can update your draft application form and supporting documentation until 30 April 2012, (or an earlier date specified on the relevant participating country profile). Once submitted, your application cannot be changed.

Verified true copies

To verify a document as a true copy, you should present the original document and the copy to a Commissioner of Oaths, Public Notary or other formally recognised authority in your home country. This official should sight both documents and verify with a stamp and/or a signature that the copy is a true copy of the original document. You will have to pay any fees charged by officials for verifying documents.
If you are submitting an online application, you should scan the verified true copies of your supporting documents (not the originals) and attach them as PDF files with your application.

The Endeavour Vocational Education and Training (VET) Award

The Endeavour Vocational Education and Training (VET) Award provides financial support for up to 2.5 years for international students from participating countries to undertake vocational education at a Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree level in any field of study in Australia. English language training in Australia will also be provided when the English language results fall within the specified requirements outlined in the Applicant Guidelines. Vocational education and training provides occupational or work-related knowledge and skills. The courses are directly related to a trade, occupation or 'vocation' in which the applicant participates. These courses exclude degree and higher level programs normally delivered by universities.
The Endeavour Vocational Education and Training (VET) Award aims to:

enable students from varied backgrounds to undertake study in Australia,
further develop Award Holders’ knowledge and skills in their areas of expertise,
showcase Australia’s vocational education and training sector,
strengthen mutual understanding between the people of Australia and Award Holders’ home countries,
build international linkages and networks and
address skills shortages in Award Holders’ home countries.
