Amazing Places: Key West

2015-08-25T06:30:00.000-04:00

So me and my sweetie went to Miami for the weekend for his birthday. While we were there we rented a car and drove the keys....If you have never been there it goes like this. Drive about 40 minutes outside of Miami to hit Key Largo.....then you just drive island to island....bridge to bridge.... sigh......it's gorgeous!!!

Our first stop in Key West was Blue Heaven...

an indoor outdoor restaurant that has chickens, a few patrons with dogs, live music, pingpong, a palm reader, etc...crazy fun!!!

For my meal I had cheese grits and key lime pie...it just sounded really good...

After we finished up at Blue Heaven we went to the most Southern Point of the Island to Swim...

It was a long drive back to Miami so we started making our way home and got to have a total groupie moment!! We had recently watched Bloodline (Netflix Original Series) and it is fantastic! Eric remembered that it was filmed in the keys so we looked up the location and WOWZA!!! Found it!!!

We ended the day at a little taco joint by the sea...

We did not catch a ride on this guy:)

Happy travels!

Summer Nights

2015-08-19T06:30:00.000-04:00

I love concerts! Watching a performer in front of a live audience is THE BEST! Once a year I try to coordinate a Sister/BFF night with my fav girls!

We ended up at this concert by default but it was such a perfect night! Train/The Script/Gavin Degraw and a gorgeous night with some gorgeous girls!

This is my sister and her BFF Amber:) Yes, they are cute!

Shel and the nacho cheese go together whenever they can! And check out that gorgeous shirt she is wearing! Fashion always on point!

Lawn seats are the best!!

No wait! These girls are the best!

Ok-Now fast forward to this summer.

Same venue but insert Lana Del Ray and Grimes.

This concert was fantastic! The music was chill...

the grass was green...

the stars were out...we named some of them...

I made memories I will NEVER forget with my girls!

So grateful for summer nights like this one!

Amazing Places-Fort Apache

2015-08-12T06:00:00.000-04:00

On one of our trips this summer we made the fortunate unplanned stopped at Fort Apache. I frequent Holden Beach because my parents have a house there. I have passed Fort Apache for the past 10 years and I've always been curious......but I've never had the courage to stop. Let me show you what I mean...
This place is a collection of....EVERYTHING. It's a combo of movie props, weird crap, vintage finds, sentimental goodness and the nicest collector, Mr. Dale, that I have ever met!

Seriously....this place has been on American Pickers and if you are ever near Wilmington, NC it's worth going. I took over 100 photos....and that still didn't do it any justice at all!

This is us with Mr. Dale..such a cool guy!

A Must See in Austin Tx

2015-08-10T07:56:00.000-04:00

Recently, my husband and I traveled to Austin, Tx. One place we visited was a bar called Whislers.

Beautiful decor, craft cocktails and an environment that makes you forget you are even in a bar.

I probably embarrassed the people we were with because I kept oohing and squealing softly"look at this and look over here and look how they did this."

I was sending Kresha pictures the whole time because I was so wishing she was with our group!!! She would have loved it. This is our style! Look at these bar chairs.

We've seen chairs with cushions done in mail bags but I love how the tattered mail bag is a slip cover. I kept saying "if Jane had a bar this is what it would look like."

Looking up I noticed this sign.

It looks like something they might have found underneath the bar floor. Simple and yet a little creepy with that childlike handwriting.

As we were sitting in our dark corner we commented Whislers reminds one of a vintage Eastern European cellar type bar straight out of Inglourious Basterds. It was AWESOME.

While we were there we had to have one of their craft cocktails. I had Tiger's Tears.

So if you are ever in Austin and need a recommendation, Whislers is a must.

I'm falling in love all over again just looking at the pics.

Entertaining

2015-08-03T07:00:00.000-04:00

Two things you should know:

1-I love to have people over to our house.

2-I suck at food prep....seriously.

So, a few months ago we hosted a party for my son, Hudson, who graduated high school from UNCSA in Winston Salem, NC. Since I am aware of my sad abilities to prepare food I enlisted the help of my people....The hubs, the parents, and the bff...and they were amazing!!!! Look at the pretty!

Michelle made guacamole....if you ever taste it you will want her to be your best friend too...Sorry, She is taken. It is truly legit...best guac on the planet.

Mom made like....87 kinds of cupcakes. Actually it was only like 7 kinds of cupcakes. BUT WOW! They were gorgeous and yummy and she even made label cards so you could call it by name while you shoved it in your mouth..."this is duh be kee lie cucaak eber" :)

We mixed vintage dishes with vintage silver serving trays. We added tiny silver pots of ivy and old apothecary bottles to the table! It was beautiful...I was so proud of what we created!

We even kept the humor on point with our tribute to the UNCSA mascot....The fighting pickle:) NO, I'm not kidding....a pickle mascot, for real! So mom fashioned this guy...Fun times!

We added in a few pieces of local art to the dining landscape! Perfect!

This is my sweet boy and his sweet girl (who also graduated that day). I think we made a day that he will always remember. Grateful for my family and friends and all they did to make my life so much easier!

Seize the Day - and Write!

2014-11-19T10:19:00.000-05:00

It's Wednesday everybody. Jane is officially open this week!

For the past while, I've been really inspired by handwriting and words. The words you say and read have a lot to say about who you are, in any language.

I absolutely love to write. I love to feel the pen, marker, paintbrush moving over the paper and creating something new. Its a form of self expression that every literate person can understand. Its not that hard and I believe in you to give it a try for yourself!

Find some old book paper and write your favorite word or phrase over top.

Now you may think you can't do anything like this because your handwriting is terrible. TRY!

Think of it as doodling with letters and words. Natural is best.

Messy and not perfect and hurried can be absolutely stunning!

But seriously. Do you like these kittens?

Have a wonderful day and be inspired!

The Secret's Out!

2014-11-05T18:15:00.002-05:00

The secret's out, the cat's out of the bag! How ever you say it here are my top favorite places this Jane likes to "pick".

5. Habitat for Humanity- Fantastic place for potential painted furniture. I like to find the unique and detailed.

4. Willie's Antiques- It was only this year that I found out about this place. I have been going every year to the Liberty Antique festival which I love, but this place was spectacular.

3. Cameron Antique Festival- This is twice and year in the spring and fall. It takes over the small town of Cameron, NC. It lines the streets with vendors.

2. Spring Garden Vintage and Warehouse- Jamie is the owner and operator. He has had a warehouse for a while and has now opened a cute house across the street to add more! Great deals and there is always something different.

1. Country Living Fair- My most favorite place has become a tradition. This takes place every year and normally in 3 different states across the country. This year my mom, aunt, family friend and me packed up and drove down to spend the weekend in Atlanta Georgia's Stone Mountain. This place is more on the pricey side, but a great trip! My favorite is looking at all the great ideas to bring back to Vintage Jane.

I love the products I create, but the best part is all the fun it takes to get it!

Maybe I will see you out treasure hunting one day or better yet, let us bring them to you!

Find all kinds of awesome at Vintage Jane.

Love,

Katie Jane

Where Do Models Come From?

2014-11-03T07:09:00.000-05:00

Much like the proverbial "Where do babies come from?" today we are answering the burning question "Where do models come from?" And the answer is "EVERYWHERE!"

Here is an inside look at where our models have come from:

Meet Beautiful Valerie! She is a client. She was in the store shopping and we said

"Wow, you're gorgeous! Can we photograph you?"

Meet Emily! In this photo you can't see her gorgeous face but she has modeled for us in several fashion shows and was one of our first clients ever.

Meet sweet Maddie! Her gorgeous hair caught our attention and we made her part of our

Valentines Day Shoot!

Helloooo Savannah! Also a client, Savannah has modeled for us many times. She is always graceful and beautiful and we heart her.

This is Molly. She's just rad on every level. She's a local artist and has modeled for us many times.

Sometimes our models let off a little steam. This is Susan.

She's a jane artist and steampunk creator extraordinaire.

This is Stephanie. Also a Jane artist....She has many mad skills. Looking adorable is one of them!

This is one of my favorite Jane photos ever. Meet Mary. We met her through Molly (pictured above). She's like a modern day version of Bridget Bardot.

Megan is a natural in front of the camera. She is also a photographer. Gorgeous!!!

This is Kayleigh. She is local art student at UNCSA. Great sense of style that translates to the camera!! Loved this shoot!

Which brings us to sweet Megan. She is a local WS style blogger (ComfortablyYoung) and was the feature of our latest shoot. Look for her photos on Facebook and Instagram over the next few weeks. Her blog is fantastic-Go Follow here

Tuesday's Pick

2014-10-21T09:01:00.000-04:00

Picking is its own adventure. It's an experience. Whatever you find is like...icing on the cake. For today's pick you get a peek into some of my favorite picking memories over the past few years.

Let's start with this truck load of goodies. This was a weekend adventure to eastern NC....

My mom and my bff are my favorite picking partners so having them together for an adventure is like....best ever.

This is where we found most of our goods. There are no words to describe the bizarreness of this place. It was a non profit warehouse thrift for stray animals. Dogs and cats in mass roaming around while you pick...it's a little unnerving when a cat throws up on what you are about to buy or a giant German shepherd starts giving you the angry eyes. But not nearly as unnerving as realizing that the person running the place is not wearing ANY undergarments and a very threadbare overgarment (is that a word)...WOW...there are certain things burned on my brain that will just always be there...yikes!

We did take a few minutes away from picking to be cute:)

This is my extended family (residents of eastern NC) trying to help us figure out how to pack the truck. My uncle was a life saver!

Also, sometimes Jason is out picking too...

Onto the next place...

This was at an antique festival. Gorgeous day...tons of finds!

I found the headless Howdy Doody to be a lil freaky.

This fella in the hardhat wanted to come home with us but we didn't have room for him in the truck!

Local picks...

No, we didn't pick at Target but we did get our picking cash and some gum there. (fresh breathe cannot be underestimated) Also, sometimes the Janes pick together.

It's nice to pick together because you can say...."Um....I think it's better in theory than reality".

However, sometimes you throw your sense out the window and buy the crazy army hat!

One of my favorites ever...

This local spot in High Point!

Michelle's mom loves to pick too! And she's super handy to climb on top of piles and grab things quickly!! You are a fabulous picking partner, Diane!

Two important things about this picture: that is root beer and we didn't let Michelle buy this hat.

And last local fav...

It looks like piles of garbage and sometimes it is...but wow...it's an adventure!

Happy Tuesday!

XOXO

Music Monday Style Crush

2014-10-20T08:03:00.000-04:00

My most recent Jane acquisition was this handmade art piece by artist Stephanie Olshanski (follow her on instagram: Ohshanski)

I love Florence + the Machine. We saw her in concert about 4 years ago and I was completely compelled (You're welcome, vampire diary fans)....maybe it's the attitude, maybe it's the drop dead gorgeous vocals or maybe it's that bad girl meets princess style that Flo pulls off without any effort at all.

Exhibit A:

sigh...this perfect mash up of leather and flowers (I struggle with flowers)....that hat...the careless "I'm all that and a bag of awesome" wave...well done, Florence...

Exhibit B

cream lace and that hair go together like cake and more cake:) Paired perfectly with cutie booties and socks so as not to be too frilly.....Florence, you have a gift!

Exhibit C

so simple, so chic...I sigh thrice...

Getting dressed should be fun and interesting! Your outfit says a lot about who you want to be today:) Stop by Jane this week for Crush Worthy Style from Local Artists.

Happy Monday!!

Fashion Tip Friday

2014-10-17T10:24:00.001-04:00

What's been trending this summer and fall are t-shirts with words, funny sayings, numbers and quotes. To take this trend into the fall, layer that mess!

If you are like this Jane, not in her 20's or 30's anymore, you can rock this look with a great jacket topped off with a statement piece of jewels.

Jane has SEVERAL t'shirts that you can easily add to your fall wardrobe with breaking the bank. Think of it as an accessory and not a staple.

So go out there and make the world smile with your fabulous fashion! Have fun with it.

xoxo,

Jane Michelle W

DIY Decor...It's Party time!

2014-10-16T08:43:00.000-04:00

Fall Decor is my fav....it makes me want to go on hayrides and wear slouchy sweaters. My niece moved in with us recently and her birthday was the perfect time to show off our DIY fall decorating skills! With the help of Jane and some paint we made it FREAKIN GORGEOUS!!

The plan was OUTSIDE with a bonfire....but it was raining so we brought the party inside. Recycled bottles painted and wrapped in burlap were painted with the number 22 because that's how old the birthday girl is. A vintage mirror laid flat on the coffee table made a base for our decor while old books, white gourds, a wooden crate and candles filled in the table.

A handpainted sign set the theme for the the party...thank you Taylor Swift! Glass bottles painted in two different colors and wrapped in twine coupled with cylinders filled with dry beans and candy corn set the mantle.

Glass containers and a vintage cake plate held the goods. Side not: Candy corn and peanuts taste like a Payday when you eat them together. Spice cake topped with fall leaves....so yummy!

We had a Chili bar and an apple bar with lots of toppings, Fall Sangria, and some amazing jalapeno cornbread!

Add one beautiful birthday girl with gorgeous auburn hair and it doesn't get much more

perfectly fall!

And because we could...the girls felt it was only right to pay tribute to Taylor (we were a little disorganized...)! And also...the chicken dance:)

Happy Thursday!

Tuesday Pick

2014-10-14T11:30:00.000-04:00

Ok....so we didn't actually "pick" today but we did pick Saturday. Here are a few picking must haves:

1-A Gorgeous Day...

Got it! It was nice and cool like a fall pickin' day should be.

2-A Strategy...

Which way do we go? What is the plan of attack?

3-An Appreciation for the Old...

We LOVE junk....Everything gets a look, a dig, a try-on....including these 1950's Super-Glam glasses....

4-A Desire to Make New Friends...

The Ladies from MADDjewels and Southern Revival were all sweethearts. You can find them on Facebook and Etsy.

5-A Fetish...

Michelle loves creepy baby dolls and was looking for a big one to use for halloween...DONE! It was like a mother finding her lost child...but creepy;)

6-A Bucket List...

This is the inside of a Junkin Camper...So adorable.....We feel that we should get one of these at some point to take Jane on the road and take her to the people. #bucketlist

7-A Love for Life...

We ate pickin food and found the best seat to watch the crazy. We have decided we love life and this was one of the best of days. Thank you to all the people who pick and make and find and sell. YOU give us so much to enjoy and look forward to. XOXO!!

Fall Military Style

2014-09-29T08:42:00.000-04:00

I am a TOTAL sucker for anything Military especially in the fall. Putting on a jacket with military style buttons is my absolute favorite.

Camo anything is also a fav paired up with something soft and girly looking.

A sweet little military-esque beanie is another fall fav.

The only real rule is:

Don't wear it all at once....you will run the risk of looking like a Rambo reject.

So here is the fun news for you:

Jane just upcycled some jewels, hats, jackets, bags, etc... to give you a pop of military in your fall closet. We open Wednesday...

here's a little peak

A few of my "new" favorite things....Jane Shannon

2014-09-24T10:12:00.000-04:00

This Jane just loves a wall vase. And as luck would have it, we have 3 different ones in the store right now that I absolutely think are beyond fabulous. Come by and check them out.

These are wine bottle wall vases. I just love the industrial hardware.

These are old test tubes attached to old molding. This one may be my absolute favorite.

These are small glass vases attached to metal scalloped trays and hung with rope.
Sorry the picture is sideways....tilt your head and smile.

Jane Travels to India

2014-09-22T11:31:00.001-04:00

A blonde haired blue-eyed girl travels to India! My mom gifted Dr. Seuss's, "Oh, the Places You Will Go" when I finished college and it has been true ever since.

Taj Mahal, Red Fort and forever burning flame for Ghandi near the capital of India, New Delhi.

Shopping in India is an adventure all it's own! The stores are filled with beautiful colors of fabric.

Every day life in India. All women wear colorful saris. Elephants, cows and goats walking through the streets and decorations of religions adorn the streets.

My favorite day was in Kerala, India washing elephants in a nearby stream and riding them only holding a rope.

We traveled down to Kerala, India where my husband's father is from. We stayed at a homestay called Mannas Veedu and traditional style Kerala home.

A day touring the backwaters of Kerala. People lived, worked and attended school here. There method of transportation reminded me of the boats in Venice.

Without marrying this wonderful man and becoming Mrs. Thekkekandam, this once in a lifetime trip would not have been possible.

Remember you are graced with one life, one body and one chance to do great things.

Love, Katie Jane

Gettin' Ready For Halloween???

2014-09-15T08:30:00.000-04:00

My 11year old loves to decorate for any occasion. She gets that honest. We don't always get to do it up right because the occasion slips up on us so quickly. This year, I am starting early with my ideas so that October 1st the decorating will begin. Start out simple as above or throw some old bones in the fireplace for an instant setting for Halloween.

Old books, cloches, and old boxes or crates on a fire mantel (available at Vintage Jane)

I love the white pumpkins below. The black crows and gauze add to the eerie feeling of this mantel. You will find frames, old cameras and silver, Wednesday through Saturday, at Vintage Jane.

Make this one creepy and then take away the creepy to have an awesome display to take you through fall into Thanksgiving.

XOXO,
Jane Angela
