The Pebble Beach Pro-Am just ended this past Sunday. Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods fought it out, but Mickelson pulled out the victory. Did you know that a former Myrtle Beach resident competed in this year’s tournament. Here’s a great article from the Sun News that documents Dustin Johnson’s experience and how he performed:

Twenty months later, Dustin Johnson finally hit the drive he wanted at Pebble Beach. Ten years later, Tiger Woods must have wondered what kept him away from the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

On a spectacular day of scenery and scoring, Johnson – a former Myrtle Beach resident and Coastal Carolina golfer – blasted a tee shot on the third hole at Pebble Beach and then pitched in for eagle from 41 yards in front of the green. He added another eagle on his way to a 9-under 63 and a three-way tie atop the leaderboard Thursday.

Woods was five shots to par out of the lead, a solid start to his PGA Tour season. He had six birdies in a 4-under 68 at Spyglass Hill, the fourth-best score on that course. Spyglass was hardest of the three courses, though not by much. The weather was so pure that all three courses played about one shot under par.

Former Myrtle Beach resident Dustin Johnson putts on the seventh green of the Pebble Beach Golf Links during the first round of the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in Pebble Beach, Calif., on Thursday.

Charlie Wi was over at Monterey Peninsula and had a shot at 59 without ever knowing it. Wi was 8 under after a tap-in birdie on the 13th hole, and needed only three birdies in the last five holes. Trouble is, he had no idea the Shore Course was a 70. He made one more birdie and had a 9-under 61.

“I was looking at the scorecard like, ‘What’s the par here?’ I did not know it was a par 70,” Wi said. “That 59 never crossed my mind. Not once.”

Joining them was former U.S. Amateur Danny Lee, who holed a bunker shot for eagle at No. 2 and holed out from the 11th fairway with a wedge for another eagle to match Johnson at 9-under 63.

Johnson is turning into his generation’s “Prince of Pebble.” He won the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in consecutive years, and then had a three-shot lead at Pebble in the U.S. Open two years ago until he shot 82 in the final round. On the third hole of that round, he hit driver left into the bushes for a lost ball and made double bogey.

On Thursday, he smashed a driver nearly 340 yards over the trees to just short of the green, setting up eagle. Even now, he still thinks about that tee shot in the U.S. Open. Walking off the tee, he said to caddie Bobby Brown, “I could have used that in the U.S. Open.”

“Walking off that hole, I told Bob, ‘This hole owes me a few more than just that one.’ ”

Johnson overpowered the par 5s at Pebble Beach, the secret to playing that course well. He had a 6-iron for his second shot at the par-5 second for an easy birdie, holed a 65-foot eagle putt on the sixth hole, got up and down from the bunker just short of the 14th for birdie, then cringed when his 40-foot eagle attempt on the 18th just turned away.

“I thought it was going in,” Johnson said. “I was laughing. I made plenty of putts today.”

Woods made his share, too.

He opened with consecutive birdies, stuffing his approach on No. 10 and two-putting for birdie on the par-5 11th. He also holed a downhill, 8-foot birdie putt on the 17th that was good enough to elicit a small fist pump, and from behind the par-5 opening hole, hit a flop shot to 7 feet and made that.

One of his two bogeys was sloppy. It came on the short par-4 fourth, with a shallow green set among sand dunes and ice plant at a diagonal angle. Instead of going toward the middle of the green and letting the slope take the ball to the hole, Woods went at the flag. The ball bounced hard over the green and into a sandy patch of dunes, in a foot print.

He did well to blast a wedge some 30 feet past the hole and had a good two-putt from there for bogey. Woods picked up another birdie on the par-5 seventh for his 68. He played the par 5s in a 3 under.

“I don’t know if it’s a good sign or a bad sign,” Woods said about his 68. “With the scores the way they are, I thought I could have it lower than I did. The guys are just tearing this place apart with no wind. I’m not too far away from posting a good number out here.”

His partner, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, contributed pars on the holes where Woods made bogey, and Romo had a birdie on the par-5 14th when Woods missed the fairway and had to settle for par. As a team, they were tied for 25th.

Romo gets to play a forward tee, but he doesn’t get any shots with a scratch handicap.

Phil Mickelson always entertains at No. 4 at Spyglass, a tee shot that gives him so much stress each year. He is determined to hit driver, and did again Thursday, this time relieved to at least be able to find it. And while he missed a 7-foot birdie putt after a splendid flop out of deep rough that ran 100 feet across the green, Mickelson was glad the hole was behind him.

As for his 2-under 70?

“The greens were perfect,” Mickelson said. “They rolled so good, and that’s why it was disappointing to let some of those go. I’ve been putting really well lately, and I expected to make some of those. Shot a couple under par, but it could have been a lot better.”

Johnson’s lone mistake came from a poor tee shot on the par-3 12th into a bunker. His start was tough to beat, though. With a 4-foot birdie putt on the fourth, he made it through six holes in 6 under, and then played solidly from there.

“I’ve been working really hard the last three days on the putter and the driver, and it paid off,” Johnson said. “I’m starting to roll the ball like I usually do.”

Ken Duke shot a 28 on the back nine at Pebble Beach and was at 8-under 64, along with Brian Harman. Nick Watney and Kevin Na each had a 6-under 66, the lowest score from Spyglass.

The conditions were so good that more than half the field broke par no matter where they were playing.

Rivers Edge Golf Course isn’t all that far from the Myrtle Beach Grand Strand, and it is comprised of beautiful holes that line the Shallotte River. Arnold Palmer worked with one of his top managers, Erik Larsen, to build and complete his vision for Rivers Edge. Here are some details from the course website:

Situated upon one of the most breathtaking pieces of property that you’ll ever see is one of the most spectacular courses you’ll ever play, designed by one of the most humble men you’ll ever meet. The very first day that Arnold Palmer gazed out across the Shallotte River, he remarked that this site had the potential to be something very special. He assigned one of his top project managers, Erik Larsen, to the job and the result is sensational.

Six of the holes at Rivers Edge Golf Club sit high upon bluffs that overlook two miles of grassy marshlands bisected by the bends and turns of the Shallotte River. The interior holes at Rivers Edge are equally stunning with gentle elevation changes, freshwater lakes and bent grass greens. GOLF MAGAZINE ranked it among “Top New Courses You Can Play” in 2000.

Located between Myrtle Beach, SC and Wilmington, NC, Rivers Edge is the perfect course to schedule for the first and/or last round of your Myrtle Beach golf vacation, particularly for golfers traveling from the north to the Myrtle Beach Grand Strand

We offer an excellent practice facility, so come early and get your game ready for your round. Our clubhouse overlooks the 9th and 18th greens, offering an ideal setting for lunch or post round snack. We also offer men’s and ladies’ locker rooms with showers for those who want to freshen up after their round.

Myrtle Beach will now have non-stop flights to Dallas-Fort Worth starting in May of this year. This desired route that will allow both sides of the equation to benefit. Those needing to travel West, will now have a new route to reach their destinations, and those coming to Myrtle Beach will now be able to fly from Dallas-Fort Worth. Hopefully the new route will improve tourism.

Spirit Airlines is expected to fly the Myrtle Beach, Dallas-Fort Worth route at least 3 times per week, beginning on May 3, 2012. This route will extend through the summer, with the possibility of continuing for a 10-month extension depending on flight volume and other factors. The flights are on track to run on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays during the Summer.

In 2010 Myrtle Beach International Airport had a direct flight to Dallas available, but it only lasted around 7 months. During that brief amount of time, Myrtle Beach International Airport witnessed 6100 passengers flying that route with American Eagle Airlines. American chose to use smaller planes that made it hard to accommodate all seats due to extra weight from golf clubs and other baggage. Spirit plans to use planes that can hold much more volume, and much more weight. This is great news for those anticipating this route!

Spirit Airlines runs great specials for its routes, and you can find out more information on flights when you are ready for your trip, by visiting their website, spirit.com.

If you are seeking additional information on your trip to Myrtle Beach, and specifically looking for information on Myrtle Beach golf, then contact us. We will help you plan and book a great Myrtle Beach golf vacation. It is a fabulous time to enjoy Myrtle Beach golf, and we are available to find you places to stay, build your itinerary, and book your tee times so all you have to worry about is your swing.

When it comes to golfing, proper ball striking and contact are of paramount importance if you want to lower your score. Much of your ability to make solid contact and connect with power depends on your ability to maintain proper posture through your swing. Here is a great article from Golf Digest describing how your hamstrings and posture will influence your ability to generate solid contact:

One of golf’s most common swing flaws is failing to maintain the posture created at address. Many amateurs rise out of their stance as they swing the club down from the top, and this causes them to make poor contact with the ball. Fat and thin shots are a typical result.

Golf instructors will often try to fix this issue with various drills that help keep students from “standing up” when they swing down and through the impact zone. An example would be to hold a golf shaft just over a student’s head and have the student make swings trying not to bump the shaft. Another would be to the student maintain the knee flex created at address.

Both are effective, and often a golfer with this stand-up problem will immediately start hitting solid shots after using these drills. The teacher and student shake hands and go on their merry ways. Problem solved, right?

Not always.

It’s easy to correct this problem for a swing or two, or even half a round. But without strong, flexible hamstrings (the muscles on the back of your thighs), the problem will come back;

especially after fatigue sets in. Your hamstrings help support the body while you swing. Wherever you are right now, get into your address posture and then feel the back of your legs. If you can’t feel your hamstring muscles working to hold that posture, you’re probably going to struggle to hit the ball solidly.

If you haven’t already, you should make the hamstrings a top priority of workouts, says Chris Noss, one of the PGA Tour’s most-respected fitness trainers. He works with Camillo Villegas and Zach Johnson, to name two of his clients. In fact, starting workouts by warming up the hamstring muscles is always a good idea, since they play a key role in doing many exercises with proper form as well as avoiding injuries. “Tight and weak hamstrings often lead to back issues, not just swing flaws,” Noss says.

Here is a description of the course from their website:

The course was designed to accommodate all skill levels through its innovative design and multiple tee placements. Just over 7,000 yards from the tips, the course will challenge the accomplished golfer, yet five sets of strategically placed tees offer an equally challenging test to golfers of all abilities.

The Willard Byrd Course of the Sea Trail

This course is located in Sunset Beach, North Carolina (279 Clubhoue Road, Sunset Beach, NC 28468), and it is truly a great course to play. The course is a par of the Sea Trail, which is a beautiful collection of courses in Sunset Beach, which is only 15 minutes from Myrtle Beach. The trail provides 3 award-winning signature golf courses, including the Willard Byrd Course. Here are some basic facts on the course, and what you should expect when you play:

The Willard Byrd Course requires a distinctively different approach thanks to a constricting tree line, challenging greenside bunkering system, and lakes ranging from 14-20 acres. Strategically placed tee shots are essential for successful play on Byrd’s newly renovated undulating greens of Champions Bermuda. A picturesque and scenic 18th hole between two beautiful ponds finishes the course at the Jones-Byrd Clubhouse. The course measures 6750 yards from the blue tees; 6,251 yards from the white tees; 5,561 yards from the gold tees; and 4,697 yards from the red tees.

Year Opened: 1990

Holes: 18, Par: 72

Walking Allowed: No

Sunday Alcohol: After Noon

Coolers: Only small, 6-pack size coolers allowed

Spikes: Soft

Greens: Champions Bermuda

When you consider the Willard Byrd course, remember that they are truly known for their playability. They are not overly difficult or challenging, but always fun. You should expect wide fairways, some sand scattered throughout, and your typical dogleg holes. This course is always in great condition, and you can play all three Sea Trail courses at a very special rate. They have a great clubhouse and excellent practice facilities available. Book your next Myrtle Beach golf vacation today, and play the Willard Byrd Course!
