Hardware

As model name implies the new iPhone 4S is a mild refresh of the original iPhone 4. New handset got a dual-core Apple A5 processor that is up to two times faster in CPU tasks and graphics. Camera is up to 8 megapixels and employs much faster sensor, f/2.4 aperture. Video is bumped to 1080p and comes with image stabilization and noise reduction. Apple claims that camera improvements resulted in 73 percent improvement in light sensitivity per pixel over iPhone 4′s unit.

Antenas

Notorios antenas are still on the outer side of device, but Apple claims that new “smart” software makes them much batter. As mater of a fact, iPhone 4S can switch between antennas during the conversation to deliver better call quality.

Data

Data speed is up to 14.4Mbps on HSPA. It is definitely batter than the iPhone 4′s 7.2Mbps and on the par with most 4G devices on the market today.

Battery

Despite new processor and new radios battery life is up by one hour and now at 8 hours on 3G, 6 hours of 3G browsing, 9 hours of Wi-Fi browsing, 10 hours of video, and 40 hours of music.

iOS 5

All new iPhones will be shipped with iOS 5 and it brings over 200 new features to iPhone 4S. The most important is the personal assistant Siri. In Apple words: “Siri. The intelligent assistant that helps you get things done. All you have to do is ask.” In demo it really looked like Suri can work, however we would have to wait until we see it in real world. Siri will be exclusively available on iPhone 4S while the rest of new features will make to other iOS 5 compatible handsets (iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPhone 4S).

Pricing

Pricing is new for this model as well. iPhone 4S will come in three configurations: 16GB for $199, 32GB for $299, and a new 64GB setup for $399, all on a two-year contract. iPhone will be available at AT&T, Verizon and Sprint joining some time soon. Pre-orders starts on October 7th (AT&T, Verizon only) with retail availability following on October 14th.

iPhone 4 and 3GS

For those how does not craver dual core high, Apple will offer iPhone 4 with 8Gb for $99 on contract (or $549 unlocked). iPhone 3GS will be free on contract on October 14th.

How much? Pricing may be a bit steep for American buyers, $649 (16GB) and $749 (32GB) but it is comparable to pricing for unlocked iPhone 4 around the globe. Apple store show strong inventory and promisses free shipping in 3 days on black models and 5 days on white ones.

If you look close the only difference you can find are tweaked CDMA-compatible antennas running around the edge. Antennas are placed symmetrically, so volume and mute buttons were moved a bit lower (old cases probably will not fit this phone anymore).

Obviously there is no Verizon branding on the phone. Verizon iPhone 4 (CDMA) will be called model A1349 (GSM version’s A1332) and will work on CDMA / EV-DO Rev networks on 850 and 1900MHz bands along with Bluetooth and WiFi. GSM support for global roaming is no where to be found, so you’ll have to limit you vacation/business trips to CDMA enabled countries. As many expected new Verizon iPhone 4 does not come with LTE support. Apple says they did not implement LTE because first generation chipsets would force unwanted design decisions that will delay release of the phone, and customers want a Verizon device now.

On the software side things look pretty good, there is no pre-loaded Verizon software (like VCAST). The only obviose difference is personal hotspot tweak in the settings menu (personal hot spot will work in 2412-2462Mhz range). Verizon iPhone 4 is running iOS version 4.2.5.

Google Voice for iPhone is available to download from the Apple App Store right now. You’ll need an iPhone (works best on iPhone 4) with iOS 3.1 or later and a valid Google Voice account to use the app. At this time, Google Voice is available in the U.S. only.

TIP: search for “googlevoice”, searching for “google voice” does not return right result.

What to do

So head over to http://www.greenpois0n.com/ to get the latest copy of jailbreak software for your favorite OS.

Unzip the file somewhere you can find it and run it as an administrator.

Now it is time to power off your iPhone. Once powered down, connect it to your computer via USB and start greenpois0n.exe application.

Once application is up, follow on screen instructions to put your iPhone 4 into DFU mode (Device Firmware Upgrade mode) to prepare for jailbreak. Just in case you new to this game, you can do so by pressing and holding the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time. If you fail to so first time just click the “Try again” and hold buttons one more time.

Once phone in device firmware upgrade mode, click the “Jailbreak!” button to jailbreak your iPhone 4.

At this time you can start nervously biting your nails or just get a cup o’ joe and relax. Status will show process and will indicate once it is done. Once the jailbreak is done, your iPhone 4 will be automatically rebooted.

Please note! Cydia does not come in this package, so you have to manually install it. Simply click the “Loader” icon to launch the app. Tap “Cydia” and then “Install Cydia”.

After Cydia is successfully installed, the system will ask you if you want to remove “Loader”. Click “Remove” and your iPhone will automatically reboot.

Bottom line. New design packages a lot of latest hardware in very small form factor. Fortunately new battery is easier to acces, there fore can be changed without trip to Apple store (or local electronics wizard). On down side new LCD panel with Gorilla Glass on top is glued to the glass and digitizer and seems to be irreplaceable without replacing of all those bits.
