New Years Resolution and Self-LOVE

Hey dolls!! I hope that your 2012 is starting off as wonderful as mine has been thus far. I like to be optimistic about a new year... you know, the whole "in with the new, out with the old" theory.

The idea of making a New Years resolution (and actually sticking with it) is something that has always been difficult for me. You ask yourself every year, "What do I need/want to change?" The obvious answers (for me) are: #1. to loose weight, #2. shop less, save more, #3. spend more time with family, etc... But this year I decided to think about what I need to change about my beauty/skincare routine. With 2012 bringing my 30th birthday, I have started paying verryy close attention to my skin. It seems to show when I'm dehydrated or tired much more easily these days. So with that in mind, my New Years resolution was to take better care of my skin (and body). Here's how I plan to do this:

#1. HYDRATE!! Definitely need to start by drinking more WATER!!! I spend so much time running around throughout the day that I often forget to drink water. Even though I don't drink soda, I do drink a lot of hot tea and coffee. Gotta take the good with the bad I suppose. Perhaps this cute water bottle will help...

#2. MOISTURIZE!! This could really go along with my vow to drink more water. The more hydrated the skin is, the less likely you are to notice signs of tiredness or aging. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I am 100% in love with the Complete Comfort Creme from MAC Cosmetics. I practically bathe in this stuff every night. And the new Mineralize Skincare line is pretty impressive so far as well. I especially like the Mineralize Charged Water Moisture Eye Cream! I swear my dark circles are a thing of the past. Everything in this line has 77 bio-available minerals to help pull moisture from the air to the skin!

#3. DECLUTTER!! Time to clean out my makeup kit as well as my personal stash of daily makeup. My dirty little secret is that my vanity currently looks like this:

Perhaps the most important thing I need to focus on for 2012 is just being good to myself. No more self-destructive thoughts/behavior. I doubt many know this about me, but I've struggled with image issues for as long as I can remember. I think this is what really ignited my interest in makeup. As a teenager, I fought a constant battle against acne. Ugh! I hated having my picture taken because I was convinced I looked horrible in all of them. And I didn't actually win the battle against acne until my early twenties when I learned that I have very dry skin and must focus on a gentle, moisturizing skincare routine rather than harsh cleansing (which at the time, I thought meant stripping my skin of all oil). Part of hating the way I looked when I was younger also had a lot to do with my weight. For some reason, I always felt fat (and not in a "ph" kinda way). I was not confident in my body and so I reached out to beauty magazines hoping to find who I was supposed to look like. But in reality, this just made the problem worse because I was comparing myself to models and I will never (repeat, never) be a a model. Then about 5 years ago (at my heaviest), I went through a very traumatic break-up with an even worse relationship as a follow-up. I lost over 30 lbs. and often looked frail and thin. I was so unhappy and tried to control my emotions through not eating. I knew I was on a self-destructive path but it was a habit that I couldn't break. I started counting calories and became obsessed with my weight. I would skip out on work, dates, friends, etc. to work out. Sometimes, twice a day. It was the only thing that helped me clear my head and feel like I had control over my life. And since I seem to be in an over-sharing kinda of mood tonight, I was finally able to reach a healthy point in my life after a few years of therapy. I'm a strong advocate of therapy. Even if you think you don't have any issues, it NEVER hurts just to talk it out. So here I am, "fat" and happy. I still struggle with image issues. I still count calories every day. I still skip out on things just to work out. I still obsess over my weight. BUT now I remind myself that I there are people who love me just the way I am. So I eat a cookie if I want. I go to happy hour with my friends. I eat late night sushi dinners with my boyfriend. I spend 4 hour lunches with my Dad and can kill an entire day shopping for nothing with my Mom. I sleep in rather than go for a bike ride. I go out without makeup (well, mostly). And I tell myself that being a size 4 at 5'3" is HEALTHY. And that's what I call progress...

I follow the blog, OH SHE GLOWS. It's a great source for vegan (gluten-free) recipes, workout tips, and overall inspiration. The blogger's story is something that I think most women can relate to. And I often re-read this entry about Self-Love. Because it's true. Without Self-Love, I have nothing.

Recovering for 2012

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. I definitely did a little overindulging over the break but it was so worth it. I spent my time with family, friends, and the love of my life, Tubby! I mean, you try to resist MY grandma's cooking. Just try. I dare ya! So time to get back on track. I've been working on replenishing my thirsty skin by drinking gallons of water and practically bathing in Complete Comfort Creme by MAC. I swear by this stuff on a regular basis but especially during times when I know my skin is parched. Try it! And I guarantee you and your skin will thank me. At the very least, be sure to be extra diligent about your current moisturising routine during this time of need...

And onto another topic of um, concern... It's no secret that I get a good amount of gratis working for MAC. OK, A MAJOR amount! It's definitely a perk and one of the many reasons why I LOVE my job. The latest collection, METAL-X is blowing my mind. I rarely, if at all buy makeup but I just HAD to get my hands on a few of the beauties from this collection. In particular, I am loving "Rusty" and "Red Hot Copper." While none of the shades are appropriate for usage on the lips, they are safe to be used anywhere else on the face/body. I used "Red Hot Copper" as my blush shade today and got several compliments on the color. It resembled a warm, pinkish flush. The formula has been revamped from a previous launch so that it blends beautifully, never creases, and can be built up for a super cool high-color/chrome effect payoff.

Anyhoo... I feel great things are in store for 2012. I've made a few resolutions for myself. With my 30th birthday looming around the corner, it's hard not to reevaluate a few things. But overall, I hope to continue making my life more beautiful through making others look and feel their best!

The house was packed and an estimated $6000 plus was raised to support the MAC AIDS Fund. Amazing. Party details included live art with body painting, a live graffitti artist, music, drag queens, etc. Here are a few pics...

A Charleston Premiere of THE WISE KIDS!

Hey dolls!! I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with loved ones and yummy food. I certainly had my fair share of Grandma's cornbread stuffing and pumpkin pie - my favs! But Thanksgiving is about more than the feast and football. It is a time to reflect on the things we are most thankful for in life. And I am truly blessed with amazing friends and family, without which I would not have been able to fulfill one of my dreams recently...

After over a year of waiting, the Charleston premiere of THE WISE KIDS finally happened!! It was such a great weekend. I spent a lot of time remeniscing about the time I lived in Charleston, the countless hours spent making the film, overnight shoots, the delerium that caused friendships I will cherish forever, and the list goes on. There is just a certain charm about Charleston that will always have a special place in my heart. But being reunited with the cast and crew of THE WISE KIDS and seeing my name listed under "makeup artist" on a big screen (and I mean BIG as the premiere was at the Hippodrome in downtown Charleston) will definitely be filed under one of the coolest experiences of my life!

After seeing THE WISE KIDS for myself (twice), I can see why it has received so much positive press and won eight awards at festivals such as Outfest. The director, Stephen Cone had a vision of telling a story about the lives of faith-based Southerners and their struggles with daily life. So he gathered cast and crew from Charleston and Chicago to create THE WISE KIDS. During the filming process, it was hard at times to picture everything coming together so perfectly as each scene had to be broken down to consider every detail. Indeed, it did though. I have to admit that I was very proud of the makeup on this film. Everyone looked amazing!! All my worrying about makeup continuity throughout the film actually paid off! The joke remains: "Can we get Christien on set with sweat rags?" HA!! It was the middle of summer in Charleston and it was HOT! So I had to make sure the makeup didn't melt off and that the actors didn't appear sweaty even though they were dying at times!

I think the film is nothing short of amazing and for that, I am truly thankful to have been a part of THE WISE KIDS. To watch the trailer of THE WISE KIDS, click HERE!!!! And to see more pics, etc. from the premiere, click HERE!!!

Ahh! It's been a minute since my last blog because I've been so, so busy working. Actually, I lie. I did get a little vacay the last week of September where I went on a cruise with friends. If you've never been on a cruise before, I highly recommend checking out any of the ones offered through Sixthman!!! Great bands, sun, relaxation...bliss!! Way too much fun.

So I came back from vacay refreshed and ready to tackle the Orlando makeup scene. And I was lucky enough to be one of the makeup artists for the ParkAvenue FashionWeek runways shows last Saturday. Several of the boutiques from Park Avenue participated in the week-long event, such as Bay Hill Jewelers on Park, Bebe's & Liz's, Coralia Leets Jewelry Boutique, Current, Eileen Fisher, John Craig Clothier, LaBella Intimates, Lilly Pulitzer, Sultre, Synergy, Thread, Tresor Gallery, and Tuni. There was so much positive energy backstage and we all worked so well as a M.A.C team to crank out some really great makeup looks. "Liberating Jessie"

Hey dolls!! Hope all is well with everyone.

So waaaayyyyyy back in 2009, I worked on a short film called "Liberating Jessie" with Trident Technical College in Charleston, SC. It was a fun experience and it's always cool to be on set doing what I love... MAKEUP!! The short is about a young adult ("Jessie") dealing with the existentialism of life.

And now, finally the efforts of everyone involved with this project are coming together for it to be shared with the world!! "Liberating Jessie" will be featured as part of a Special Screening of SC Short Films at Cinebarre in Mt. Pleasant, SC. For more info about this event, click HERE!

Orlando Bridal Makeup

I get asked about bridal makeup almost daily. And I love working with brides as they plan the big day. Bridal makeup is necessary for several reasons but mostly it ensures great looking photos. The other day I came across an article giving advice to brides about choosing a makeup artist. The article brought to light many great questions so I thought I would answer a few and share with you. If you think of any questions that I haven't answered here, please feel free to email me at christien@yourmakeupgal.com or call me at #321.279.6543!

1) How do I book you for my wedding date? Is there a deposit? What about a contract? Most brides start with reviewing my website and online portfolio. Then we check to see if I am available for their wedding date and go from there. I have a few different packages available for brides to choose from to meet individual makeup and budget needs. I do require a 50% non-refundable deposit for the estimated cost of the bride (not inlcuding bridesmaids, family members, etc). I also require each bride to sign a contract outlining the services, fees, etc.

2) Will it be YOU at my wedding or another artist? What happens if YOU can't make it on my day? When you speak with me about hiring a makeup artist for your wedding, you are hiring ME as your makeup artist. I have never had an issue where I was late or couldn't show up for a booked wedding In the event I cannot do the makeup on the day of your wedding, I will make every effort to find another makeup artist to provide services. If makeup services cannot be provided at all, I will glady give a full refund.

3) How many weddings have you done? Do you normally work with brides? I have been doing makeup for brides for over 5 years to date. And I don't plan on stopping any time soon... When I think about the countless number of brides I've worked with, I feel honored. It's a privelage to be a part of a day people remember for the rest of their lives. And yes, I do still work in several other areas of makeup such as fashion, film, print, etc. and enjoy that as well.

4) What is your background? Where did you learn to apply makeup? I have been doing makeup for as long as I can remember. I think my fascination with makeup started around age 14?! After deciding (at age 25) that I wanted to be a makeup artist when I grew up, I was hired as a part-time prestige consultant for ULTA. Then I put together a small kit and booked my first bride through craigslist.com. From there, my makeup career blossomed to where I was working full-time in social services (did the whole college thing first) and working weddings, etc. on weekends. After deciding I was tired of being a "weekend warrior," I went back to school in 2010 to learn advanced makeup application at the Joe Blasco Makeup Artist Training Center in Orlando. Since graduating, I have continued to work with brides, in film, on photo shoots, etc. and was hired as a full-time artist with M.A.C Cosmetics. So my training continues almost daily!

5) Do you have a portfolio? YES!! Several pictures of my work can be viewed by clicking HERE!! I try to update as often as possible and I stay current with trends. But pictures always help so don't hesitate to show me
a picture of what you expect.

6) Do you have a website or a blog? Sure do!! And feel free to browse through it all day - http://www.yourmakeupgal.com/! LOL!

7) Do you have references? YES! References are available upon request. A few brides that have "raved" about my work can be found by clicking HERE!

8) What do you charge? I have a few packages available to meet each brides makeup needs with keeping their budget in mind as well. And I leave each and every bride with a touch-up kit!

9) What size of bridal party can you accommodate? How long does it typically take per person? I do not have a minimal number of people required to be booked for your wedding makeup and can work with any size bridal party. The largest I've worked with to date is 13 I believe... Hey, it's all about the bride anyways, right! For time planning, I say allow me 25 minutes per person but I've been know to crank out some makeup come crunch time. I often find myself in the time keeper position for larger bridal parties because people are socializing, relaxing, and getting ready (and rightly so).

10) Can you duplicate a makeup look from pictures in a magazine? Pictures always help me get a better understand of the clients expectations. During the trial run, we'll dicsuss skin type, tone, etc. to makeup sure the bride gets the end result expected.

11) What methods of payment do you accept? At this time, I only accept cash, checks, or money orders. And yes, I always provide receipts.

12) What kinds/brands of products do you use? A little of everything. I'm not brand specific because there are so many great products (high-end and drugstore) from different lines. Although I do tend to have a lot of M.A.C products since I work there... During the trial run, we will discuss skin type, etc. to determine the right products to use. I'm available to stick around for touch-ups if desired but I use products/techniques to ensure the makeup lasts as long as you do.

13) Are you able to cover tattoos?? YES! There is a process involved and pricing depends on the size/location of the tattoo.

14) Do you know how to handle severe skin allergies, acne, etc.? Yes. I have dealth with several skin types and textures. And this reason is why the trial run is so important.

15) Do you apply false lashes? YES! I offer both strips and individual lashes to add a little or a lot of drama!!

16) Is there a travel fee?? How far are you willing to travel?? I will ll travel to your chosen location for the trial run and the day of the event. However, there is a charge of $20 for anything more than 20 miles outside of the downtown Orlando area.

17) What happens during the Trial Run? The trial run is necessary because this is when we talk about skin concerns and the look desired. This way, you will know exactly how your makeup will look the day of your wedding. The trial run can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. It's a good idea to take pictures of the makeup so you know how it will photograph and how it will last through the day.

About this time last year, I was looking for freelance makeup jobs and came across a call for a MUA for a little indie film called THE WISE KIDS. So after falling in love with the script and meeting the director, Stephen Cone, I packed my kit and headed to Charleston, SC to help make a movie.

The cast and crew were nothing short of amazing. Admist crazy 14-hour days (often through the night), the scorching summer heat, Charleston bugs, and a plethora of other great memories, I am proud to announce the finished product will premiere at Outfest 2011 next month. And the buzz surrounding the film has been so positive that it will surely be a success at this and many other film festivals.

So I will encourage (beg) you to check out THE WISE KIDS, a film about the confusing time between high school and college where the path to self-exploration often begins. THE WISE KIDS is set in Charleston, SC and tells the story of Brea, a pastor's daughter with doubts about faith; Laura, set in ways of her beliefs; and Tim, dealing with being gay.

I can't believe I FORGOT to post a few pictures from a fashion show I did in April?!? I am the worst at keeping up with things. In my defense, I have been super busy lately with makeup gigs and family drama. Excuses, I know. Sometimes I have to remind myself to stop and enjoy my life. Or at least take a few minutes to appreciate the coolness of my job. I recently started following the blog "Oh She Glows" and it's definitely helping me put things into perspective. I highly recommend this site if you have ever struggled with anxiety, weight, etc. I'm not vegan but I have tons of respect for people with that much discipline. I prefer to be vegetarian but sometimes my body craves meat. And from struggling with my own weight issues over the years, the most important thing I've learned is that I have to listen to my body. Anyhoo, the point is that I feel lucky to be a part of events like this Spring on the Runway Fashion Show fundraiser...

THE WISE KIDS ... update!!!

Hey dolls. So last summer I worked as the key MUA for a little movie called THE WISE KIDS. I've been patiently waiting on news of it's release and I'm soo excited to say that it is in the final stages of post-production as we speak (well, type). I cannot wait to see the final product!! The cast and crew were amazing and I truly believe that all our sweat, tears, and hard work will pay off to a great movie!

THE WISE KIDS is a drama about three kids who deal with the changes of life the summer between high school and college. Everyone will be able to relate to at least one of the main characters - Tim, as he deals with his sexuality; Brea, as she starts to doubt the religious beliefs her pastor father instilled in her; and Laura, who becomes more devout in her beliefs as the others move on from the life they knew in Charleston, SC.

AIDS Walk Orlando

Hey guys and gals!! As part of my job at MAC, we do a lot to spread community awareness about HIV/AIDS. For example, 100% of the selling price from every VIVA Glam Lipstick (such as the latest one inspired by Lady Gaga) goes to the MAC AIDS Fund which provides grants to local organizations that help people living with HIV/AIDS to be able to access everyday necessities and toiletries.

On April 9th, I am walking in the AIDS Walk Orlando 5k at Lake Eola Park. If you can, please come out to be a part of this event or simply donate a few bucks for the casue by clicking HERE. PROM season has arrived!!

I swear the days are flyin by. While talking with my little sister the other day, I realized it's PROM season!! I mean, hello. Didn't we JUST celebrate New Years?! And Valentines Day?! HA! We won't even talk about how old it makes me feel to be doing my little sister's makeup for prom... Anyway, my point is have you given any thought to prom makeup?? If you are looking for help creating the perfect look for this very special occassion (EVERYONE remembers their prom), give me a call or stop in the MAC Store at the FL Mall. In the meantime, here is a picture of a very simple look I did on my sister. She hardly wears makeup so she was very specific about not looking to overly done up. I did manage to get a pair of false lashes on her though!!! Cute, right...

MAC launches WONDER WOMAN!!!!!

There are several perks to my job with MAC but this one is really, really exciting. You may have heard that MAC is launching a new WONDER WOMAN collection on February 10. Between the bold colors and the special packaging, this collection is going to be sick! There is even buzz that the Wonder Woman collection is going to be the best yet! Like, bigger than Barbie (is that even possible)!! The new collection will consist of special edition lipsticks, lipglass, colored mascaras, eye liners, nail lacquers, eyeshadow quads, GLITTER, pigments, blush duos, AND limited makeup bags as well as brush sets!!!!!

OK, now the part I'm super excited about is that my store (MAC @ the Florida Mall) is having a special unveiling on February 1st from 7p - 9p. We are showing the collection before anyone else gets to even think about it!! This is an INVITE ONLY event where you will be able to see, touch, smell, and BUY products from the new Wonder Woman collection. There will be cocktails and hors d'oeuvres from Puff N' Stuff (yumo) as well as live models and WONDER WOMAN herself! Think cocktail party of epic proportions... but you have to be on the list! WOW! I can't believe that it's 2011 already. Although I'm sure everyone is scratching their heads wondering where the days of 2010 went?! Did anyone make any specific beauty resolutions for 2011?? I don't typically make any new year resolutions but I know 2011 is going to be full of great things! The trends seem to be a BOLD lip color and satin skin. I already prefer a more natural base look, but I think we are going to see more "dewy" looking skin. And if you haven't made a new year resolution, perhaps just cleaning out your makeup bag is a good place to start...

I realize it's been a while since my last update but things have been majorly busy for YourMakeupGal!! The holidays at MAC have left me with little free time. Somehow I did manage to find time to do a couple holiday makeups though. And I was recently approached to be a contributor for the Orlando area Examiner.com. GREAT makeup starts with GREAT skincare

It's winter. It's cold (in most places). And that leads to dry, thirsty skin. I have very dry skin normally so when the temperature starts to drop, I load up on moisturizer and anything with skin conditioners. The more hydrated your skin it, the less likely you are to develop fine lines, large pores, etc. In fact, people with oily skin usually load up on products to reduce the oil production but neglect moisturizer. This is a NO!! Products that rob the skin of water or are scratchy to the skin will only cause double trouble. The more you try to stop oil production, the more your skin will freak out and produce oil to try to moisturize itself. SO kids. What have we learned today?! Moisturizer is probably one of the most important things you can do for your skin. Well, that and sunscreen and appropriate facial cleanser for your skin type... But you get the idea. With that said, I thought I would share a few of my favorite moisturizers:

GREAT for fellow dry skin types!! adds a ton of moisture to skin without any irritation

for oily skin types, greasepit no more!!

works to reduce the production of oil on skin with a matte finish

and if you have zero skin issues, a mild moisturizer will do the trick

It's official! I started working with MAC this month and so far, I LOVE it. I feel so lucky to be able to wake up everyday and work as a makeup artist. I am still available for freelance work in the area so please feel free to call!! Just wanted to share the news!!!! :D
